Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good book for the PHP certification........2007-10-04

This books covers a good amount of the topics on the certification, and I would definitely recommend it for the certification and general PHP knowledge. You will probably need more than this to pass the certification. I would recommend taking the online practice tests from the Zend certification site as well.

3 out of 5 stars Not good enough for preparing PHP5 certification.......2007-06-23

This book provides many perspectives on PHP5 certification. However, as a certification preparing guide, I don't think it is good one to pass the exam just by reading this book.

First, it does not have questions at the end of each chapter to evaluate how well the reader learned from the material, as many other exam preparing guides do. It is hard for me to imagine how does the real exam go without those questions.

Second, it has many errors in this book. Some of them could mis-lead you to get wrong concepts of PHP. I agree with Brian, the previous reviewer, beware of using this book. Once you felt anything confused, check out other books or write some codes to test what is the right concept you should learn.

Finally, it does not mention any information about how to connect / retrieve / update information from / to databases with a PHP script. It does have a chapter called "Database Programming", but all it has are only the introduction of SQL statements. I doubt if we don't need to prepare that part for PHP certification.

However, it provides some chapters for XML, web services, and security, which are valuable to refer to. It brought my attention to find more resources to read for those parts.

If you prefer a book that mentions key points of exam without many details, this book is the one you should read; otherwise, pick another one will be a better idea for you.

3 out of 5 stars A good review, but not in-depth by any means..........2007-05-01

If you have already been using PHP5 on a regular basis, this book is a good source of review material but doesn't necessarily cover very much new material. It is, I suppose, a good foundation to study for the test, but it *most definitely* is not the only book that you're going to want to read before taking the Zend Certification test.

I also noticed a lot of errors in this book, so beware of that. I recommend the book by Mike Zandstra PHP 5 Objects, Patterns, and Practice in addition to this one, especially if you are moving from PHP4 to PHP5.

4 out of 5 stars Very pleased.......2007-01-09

This is a very good study guide for the Zend PHP5 exam. Touches on quiet a few of the more subtle subjects in PHP5 and has a very nice learning curve. It's not recommended for the beginners and has to be read alongside other materials (be it online or offline) for maximum efficiency. It's not the definitive PHP study guide and you shouldn't rely on it alone for the exam. Great value for money!

2 out of 5 stars Ultimately..........2005-02-04

... not that good. It's unfortunate that the only book dedicated to php game programming really falls short on many levels. The main problem with this book, is it jumps from the very basics of php and mysql to extremely advanced topics all within a matter of a few pages... entirely omitting users of intermediate php/mysql knowledge. The book has a chapter about creating a MMO (my sole purpose for buying the book).. yet it doesn't tell you anything about HOW to make the MMO. The source code for the MMO has 150+ files, yet the chapter is only 20 pages long...

The author does a great job explaining how to use php and mysql.. including great instructions for installation... the problem is that other books dedicated to learning these subjects do it better. This book should be about learning how to program a game in php/mysql, and it's not. This book is a book about learning the basics of php/mysql with some source code WAY more advanced than anything the book will cover. If you're advanced enough to decipher the authors code, then you don't need this book in the first place becaues you could already make games if you wanted. This book contains no content on game planning or design.

The author write effectively.. I'd love for him to take a second pass at writing this... perhaps sit down and write a book dedicated to teaching you how to program a game. The MMO that comes within the book is certainly complex enough to deserve a book of it's own. Ultimately, this book is 280 pages long.. you cannot teach someone how to make a game in php/mysql in 280 pages.

I'd love to see an author write a book that illustrates making a game from concept to design to code... the how and the why of the processes, and have it return a good game you can use as a foundation for creating other game.

I really looked forward to getting this book before it was published. Now almost a year later, having been through the book 3 times fully, I can say I'm no closer to having any idea how to make a game than when I started.

3 out of 5 stars Some errors...but overall ok..........2007-09-26

This book had some errors in it...just typos if you want to call. But hey overall it was a good book.

I just wish it covered a little bit more on the MySQL unit, such as database normalization. I already know how to do it but just for others sake the book should have covered that more.

I also feel the same way about the Object Oriented Programming part. That should have been an entire chapter. Because the major change in PHP 5 is the concepts of OOP in the new PHP 5.

Thats all!

3 out of 5 stars Not for a complete beginner.......2007-05-30

This book starts great with step by step instructions to get going on installing a WAMP/LAMP evironment and creating a DB, but then the author hits the turbo button and creating your first table involves loops, counts, subsets, if/else, and other programming techniques with very little description of what or why....more of a "ohh, put this here" rather than a detailed explanation. For a beginner, I feel like this book will force memorization rather than understanding.

1 out of 5 stars Stay far away, to many errors.......2006-02-07

I bought this book hoping to be able todo basic things with PHP 5 and learn the basics of the language, at first it started out fine until i hit the sectin on using variable from there the book is horrid syntax errors that just repeat I don't know how someone couldnt catch them ( does the company and publisher even test the code ? ) thanks to everyone in ##php on irc.debian.net i was able to walk through the next few pages coirecting well over 12 errors in one script and there is no erratta for this on the comapnies site. i started reading again and once again errors in the section on variables from forms
this book is very poorly written I want to sell it but i wouldnt wish this book on my worst enemy please for your own good stay away ive been in the IT field and a linux user for 7 years this book is just horrible and confussing after page 70

5 out of 5 stars Excelent!.......2005-10-31

I highly recomend this book to anyone that has no experience in PHP or MySQl and has a desire to learn both. This book's step by step chapters makes it easy to learn and use PHP. Before I was done with this book I was already coding my own PHP/MySQL programs and rewriting open-source PHP programs like PHP-Nuke and phpBB among others. This book is an excelent buy at any price!

4 out of 5 stars Thumbs up for this book!.......2005-09-16

Using this book and a few choice websites, I was able to create my very own PHP/MySQL driven website for users to sell books.

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to learn PHP that have *some* programming experience

You won't write a word processor, database server, or telephony gateway in PHP, nor will you use the language for complex mathematical modeling. PHP is meant to solve the kinds of problems that the creators of dynamic Web sites encounter. The authors of PHP Professional Projects have solved some of the biggies for you. This book has considerable merit: the pages explain how to write product catalogs, shopping carts, session-tracking routines, and user-authentication utilities in PHP, often with the MySQL database server holding up the back end. If you're the sort of reader who wants a quick solution, you'll be happy to find the solutions on a companion Web site. If you want to learn from the authors (after all, similar solutions are free for the taking on SourceForge and other code repositories) you'll be fairly pleased as well, since there are several nice tutorials.

When it comes to the PHP code listings in this book, you'll either be impressed by the spacious layout with plenty of room for notes, or aghast at the amount of space taken up by uninterrupted, uncommented stretches of code. Either way, the code is solidly written--it's efficient and worth studying as part of your educational effort--but some weird and unnecessary line breaks damage the flow a bit. The main point: this is a book of solutions that work, with long code listings for people who like to study that way. --David Wall

Topics covered: Solving common Web site problems with PHP and MySQL. Sections address the fundamentals of PHP and MySQL, but the authors quickly transition into full applications: a shopping cart, a user authenticator, an e-mail sender, and a graphics-file manipulator are among the best.

Book Description

Use PHP to accomplish real-world, professional tasks. PHP Professional Projects is your key to unlocking the power of PHP. Each project focuses on a specific concept and is based on a real-world situation. Enhance your skills as you work through five projects including creating a user registration form, storing and retrieving data from files, working with MySQL using PHP, creating a catalog and shopping cart, and user authentication and tracking. When you are finished, you will have the skills necessary to modify projects to fit your professional needs.

4 out of 5 stars Good 2nd PHP book.......2005-05-12

I found that this book was an excellent 2nd PHP book. I understand the frustration of those who found it uninstructional. I also bought PHP fast&easy web development which is a step-by-step tutorial in PHP. But now that I've done the tutorial I'm REALLY glad I picked up both. If you're just starting in PHP this is not the best book for you to start with. But if you're going to continue with PHP you ought to have a copy.

2 out of 5 stars Almost Unreadable.......2003-09-06

Its not the worst book I've own, but it is very much a "type this in and view it" type book. No real explaining of deep concepts or anything like that. As far as the typos, sheesh(!), they are everywhere. And the code examples are so misaligned and wrapped around the page so strangely it is the very definition of unreadable code.

Skip this one,...

1 out of 5 stars Lots of typo, not really for professional projects.......2003-06-18

First off, this is not a book for professional projects. The topics that the author discuss are very basic and not really pointing out any key concept. This book is more appropriate with the title such as 'Beginner Guide to PHP'. There are also typos throughtout the entire book. I spent more time correcting the errors in the code sample than graspping the concept itself. Not to mention that the examples layout on the page are very unorganized, the book doesn't make good use of margin and tabs. The screen captures are not very well prepared. Good book to read for fun or freshing up on PHP, but definetely not for professional projects.

1 out of 5 stars Very Incomplete.......2003-04-13

This book is very incomplete. It is very brief on key issues, I can never find what I'm looking for.

2 out of 5 stars Consider Something Else!.......2003-02-10

This book was a great disappointment! I am building a large application in PHP and was looking for some good project planning strategies and patterns. Instead I found the usual shopping cart examples written as if for a small scale project. The code snippets are full of white space and a few lines of code takes up an entire page, hence it is hard to follow. What little code I did try was full of errors and bad syntax. This book does not have a CD with it so you must type in all the code that you may want to start with. I suggest the book 'Web Applications Development with PHP 4.0' for your true professional projects.

2 out of 5 stars Hard to read........2006-08-25

I have to admit that I learned PHP primarily by reading this book, but I wouldn't recommend it for others. Beside the errors (which would confuse the heck out of non-programmers), I find the book repetitive and hard to read for long amounts of time. In fact, I believe there are two tables both defining the same escape characters, but now that I search for them, the index doesn't point to any tables at all. The book definitely has TOO MANY FRICKIN SCREENSHOTS. Sure, screenshots are alright for some things, but when it's one or two lines of formatted HTML, you might as well include it inline instead of taking up 1/3 of the page. Another thing I don't like about the book is that no matter what chapter you read, it still reads as though you've never programmed PHP before. Example (page 189):

10. Close the for loop:

}

I ask, is this really necessary? One-third of the book could be easily condensed, and I'm not even eggagerating. This nonsense runs throughout the book. The examples are very useful, but for me, it was very hard to read cover to cover. Personally, I think you should find something else.

4 out of 5 stars Great on PHP, short on SQL.......2004-12-15

This book sits right here on my shelf next to my PC along with my Photoshop, UNIX, and C++ books. It's a great resource for things PHP related.

The step-by-stel method works well with this book and it explains things in clear, plain english. This is a PHP book for someone who loves HTML, but has never ventured into PHP before. It will be of limited use for someone who uses PHP all the time, save for the refrence section, which is like a shortened and easily explained version of www.php.net

The biggest problem I had with this was that it tries to show you PHP/SQL applications without really teaching you mySQL. So you'll get the jist of the database workings (They even throw in a section on normalization!), but no real sense of the database itself.

If you're going to buy this book, buy an easy SQL book and go through that first so you understand how to make databases, tables, etc. It'll make this one a lot easier once you hit the DB part of it.

Just come prepared, and this book will be worth it.

2 out of 5 stars Page 8.......2004-06-26

I couldn't get past page 8 in this book. The mysqld-opt command to use to start the mysql server is not what www.mysql.com recommends for a windows machine. The book looks like it's easy to read. But I couldnt get out of the starting block with the mysql effort in the first chapter. It was easier to buy a mysql book and do it the correct way. Some URL's are needed in the install area that take one to some type of Mysql installation help. There are some at the back of the book, but I only saw those as I was dropping the book in the trash.

It's probably not the books fault, but mysql installations on a windows machine... well you have to be lucky. There is no forum easily accessbile at mysql.com and google points mostly to linux resources...

4 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners with programming background.......2004-02-11

This is one of the best "introduction to" books I've used in a long time. Essentially, you're retyping simple, but potentially useful, well-documented examples -- much friendlier than the "this is left to the reader as an exercise" approach of textbooks I've read. This book **does** assume you know some programming. You should know basic concepts such as variables, arrays, loops, etc. before purchasing this book. Of course, had the author discussed these concepts, this book would be many pages longer and cost 25% more. The examples in the book are available in the publisher's website, although when I downloaded them, the example code wasn't organized well to match the book. The book, likewise, has a few, but critical typos. Also, not that **any** programming book I've read helps you debug code, but if you mistype something and have to debug your code, you're totally left on your own (although I haven't emailed the author like another reviewer did). A very good introduction to PHP!

1 out of 5 stars Riddled with errors and inconsistencies........2004-01-30

I am so disapointed in this text. Not only does the content/code on the CD NOT match the text in the book, some of it is just plain wrong. An errata is available on the book's Web site to some minor credit of the author but with errors in a book for beginners is completely unprofessional. Don't waste your money on this text. Sadly, this book is rated highly by others. I wonder if they got though the code.

Update: The latest version of this book, geared for PHP5 users is a huge improvement over this text.

    Book Description

In March 2000 Cisco Systems, with a market capitalization of $531 billion, was the most valuable company on the planet. With 44,000 employees and a stock price at $80 per share, Cisco was poised for unstoppable growth and unending glory. Six months later with the crisp smell of cold cash in the air, Cisco president and CEO John Chambers vowed to change the world. Who knew that in a matter of days disaster would strike?

The Eye of the Storm: How John Chambers Steered Cisco Through the Technology Collapse offers the gripping account of the high-tech American dream turned nightmare. Bestselling author Robert Slater's riveting narrative traces the path of Cisco's rise from anonymity to prosperity and then to its sudden, shocking fall, as a world without ceilings gave way to a world where no floor was in sight.

Through unprecedented exclusive interviews with Chambers and Cisco's top executives and unparalleled access to Cisco's private forums, Slater reveals the confidential working and insider decisions behind what was nothing short of a business miracle before the vision went temporarily awry. Unadorned and unequivocal, this is the fascinating story of how Chambers, once widely hailed as "King of the Internet," navigated Cisco through a period of inconceivable success before guiding his company through unimaginable misfortune.

Throughout this engaging tale of the birth and death of the new economy, Slater gleans pearls of business wisdom and essential lessons for corporate decision-making in the new millennium. Collected here are the brilliant maneuvers that catapulted Cisco to glory and the devastating mistakes that brought the company low. The Eye of the Storm is a story at once captivating, instructive, and provocative. Never again will we forget that our soaring revenues of today may well become our plummeting stock prices of tomorrow.

Slater's incisive and illuminating firsthand account takes you behind the scenes from the boom to the bust through to the recovery of a company that has earned its place in the history books asone of America's greatest.

The last two chapters are downright, terribly boring. But since Cisco is part of the legends of Silicon Valley, I wanted to understand it a little more. But one book's enough.

2 out of 5 stars Informative but not tough enough.......2003-07-09

As the author readily admits, his book was rewritten when his subject, Cisco CEO John Chambers, was suddenly presiding over a shrinking, rather than expanding, company. The rewrite shows in the final product.

Robert Slater explains Cisco's fabulous rise well. The key players granted him interviews and seemed happy to discuss the company's glory days in length. The company's subsequent decline beginning in 2000 is not treated as well. I didn't learn nearly as much about Cisco's fall as the book's title would suggest I should have.

After covering business icons such as Jack Welch and George Soros, I wonder if the author was really prepared to take the critical approach necessary to cover the decline of Cisco that John Chambers oversaw.

And as if he felt the need to justify the subject matter, Slater repeatedly mentioned the fact that Cisco was the most valuable company in the world, if only for a second. The reference got annoying.

Overall, anyone who wants insight into the roots and management team at one of the world's most important tech bellwethers should read this book. There are some fascinating revelations here such as how close Cisco came to acquiring hub maker SynOptics Communications in 1993. At the same time, I was disappointed he completely omitted information about Cisco's close M&A relationship with Silicon Valley venture capital firm Sequoia Capital in the late 1990s.

While Slater's ninth chapter about Cisco's dealmaking techniques comes to the conclusion that most of its deals had little or no effect on the company, true M&A junkies might be better off reading Ed Paulson's adulatory book, Inside Cisco, to learn more about the communications equipment maker's aggressive corporate development program.
