5 out of 5 stars Out of Tune and Deaf, Buy the Book, Get the Exam.......2005-12-25

This is an Exam Cram and not a conceptual paper for a PhD. It should be treated as an Exam Cram and not a full technical manual and study guide. It is a tome which you use during the last period of your study to "CRAM" and remind you of the essentials etc. It is not meant to be used as a bible on the subject. Some clowns actually use Exam Crams well out of context and then blame them for their exam failures like the bad musicians they are, always off tune especially when they put pen to paper to review the book and try to shift their lack of preparation and guilt into blame on their study tools. Use several sources for study if you can, don't always take the advertising blurb for gospel and get your head down in your studies. But for gods sake don't blame the tools!

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.......2005-12-23

I've studied and successfully passed exams 70-210 and 70-215 each with the couple sybex (studying) & examcram2 (review) and it went good.

But in the case of 70-218, ExamCram2 book is very bad.
It's not badly written, but it's content it's not deep enough (the book is very thin, 350 pages) and the question, which are _the most important thing_ are way too easy, and this is very bad, specially for a review book.

70-218 is a fundament for Active Directory understanding and it deserves _special_ attention in studying: in this idea, this book is a complete failure.

Buy this book, read it cover to cover and you will pass your exam!!!

This book has no flaws. It's coverage on all of the exam topics is absolutely perfect. They hit the nail on the head with this one and hit their mark.

Just read this book cover to cover, take a few practice exams, and take your exam when you can consistently get over 800 on your practice exams. That is how I passed this exam. I used this book, read it cover to cover and took some practice exams, that's it, nothing else.

I attained my absolute highest score to date with the help of this book. I scored almost 900 out of 1000. You can too.

DeJuan, MCP-A+-Net+.
What else is there to say. You buy this book and study, you learn and you pass the test. It's that simple. Yes I will say you do need to have some experience to understand about 2% of the material, but that's what study guides are for, not exam crams. Que has set the bar high.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book. Must have!.......2003-05-19

I used this book along with the corresponding transcender and passed the 70-218 on the first try. I also had a decent amount of hands on which is invaluable for the microsoft certs as well. I must say that this is a very well written book and I plan to buy the next in the series.

      Book Description

The ADR 2001, is the thirteenth annual survey of economic and social progress in Africa. Published for the fifth consecutive year by OUP, the Report provides comprehensive analysis of the state of the African economy, examining development policy issues affecting the economic prospects of the continent. The Report's theme this year - Fostering Good Governance in Africa - reflects a growing acceptance of the value of both participatory democracy as well as good economic and corporate governance in accelerating growth and reducing poverty. The report addresses a range of key issues relating to this theme, including: DT Popular participation in public policy decision making either directly or through legitimate intermediate institutions that represent the interests of citizens DT Rule of law, which refers to the existence of a legal framework with clear laws that are fair and enforced impartially through an independent judiciary. DT Transparency: where processes, institutions and information are directly accessible to those concerned DT Effectiveness and efficiency in use of resources, processes and institutions for the provision of services DT Accountability of decision makers in government to ensure that institutions are responsive in serving the needs of all stakeholders DT Role of ADB in fostering good governance among its regional member countries The African Development Bank is a multilateral development finance institution whose membership comprises all African countries and 25 from Asia, Europe, North and South America. As Africa's premier development finance institution, the ADB is uniquely placed to provide comprehensive analysis of economic developments and policy concerns in the region. As such, the ADR is set to become the standard reference for economists and policy makers interested in African development for many years to come.

        Book Description

Growth and development are among the most exciting subjects in economics, and the application of their principles to African economies is both needed and timely. African Economic Development comprises a collection of articles written especially for this volume, which offer an authoritative statement about economic growth and development on the continent. Chapters are grouped together according to the major influences on growth and development and their effects, as well as the significant or unique problems which have slowed or undermined African growth, and the manifestations of development by country or region and by industry. While many books on regional economics become quickly outdated and overly narrow, these multidisciplinary regional studies with an economic bias will be considered cornerstones of the field for some years to come.

          Book Description

This publication shows how land tenure laws, decentralization policies, institutional capacity building, common property management, conflict resolution and participatory development can be made more responsive to the needs of those practicing transhumance today, or pastoralists, for ecologically and economically sustainable development in arid Africa. The case studies cover social, economic, political and environmental issues. Scientists, students, development experts, government officials and development organizations will find the research highly relevant.

          Book Description

This is the first book to present the African perspective on the Bretton Woods approach to structural adjustment, and it does so with the input and support of top economists and scholars from every corner of Africa. The authors use as background their own extensive experience and a collection of 30 individual studies to summarize this African perspective and articulate a path for the future. They underscore the need to be sensitive to each country’s unique history and current condition. They argue for a broader policy agenda and for a much more active role for the state within what is largely a market economy. Finally, they stress that Africa must, and can, compete in an increasingly globalized world and, perhaps most importantly, that Africans must assume the leading role in defining the continent’s development agenda.

3 out of 5 stars A few problems theoretically .......2006-09-29

Soludo and Mkandiwire are two excellent Economist and have compiled a number of astute observations on African Developmental strategies. I do think that there are a few oversights and understatements however. Their prescriptions for Africa to be able to compete in a Capitalist society dominated by Western Nations is a little myopic. Africa is a repository of minerals and goods for these Western Nations, this in mind, one can conclude that those very same Nations will do every and anything under the Sun to ensure that Africa remains in the state it's been in for the last 500 years. Africa must continue to search for alternative and imaginative economic models in order to survive. Although the authors explication of External Market Shocks' disruption of the African economy, they failed to grasp what the Pan Africanist have been exhorting for over a century and that is a market for Africa already exist. It's Black Americans, Black South Americans and West Indians. One reason for the lack of organizational producer / consumer relationship necessary between the Continent and the Diaspora is psychological but that's another book. I would posit that if Africans were to develop an internal market, not only would we be able to cushion ourselves against the above mentioned External Market Shocks but trade relations with other developing and 'Leftist Countries' would be instrumental in not only our growth but the subsequent dismantling of a maleficent Global Capitalist system. It is a good book, I just have a few philosophical differences.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best written books on economics........1999-04-08

A key to understanding the condition of African economics rather than accepting the prescribed solutions the west imposes on the continent. Through their own experiences and scientific studies on the continent the authors have come up with prescriptions and diagnosis very different from the imposed structural adjustments theories that have proven to be failures. A very refreshing reading indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Must reading for anyone concerned with African development.......1999-03-26

Must reading for anyone concerned to understand African development strategies. Particularly recommended for those involved in the debate about trade and new U.S. policies towards Africa. Written as a synthesis of work by leading African social scientists, this book is concise, clear, non-rhetorical and solidly based on empirical work. It not only provides a devastating critique of standard "structural adjustment" models, but also lays out an alternative strategy for African-directed growth and development. -- William Minter, Senior Research Fellow, Africa Policy Information Center

4 out of 5 stars Guarded Overview of South African Economic Issues.......2006-04-01

Many conservatives believe in a myth that apartheid-era South Africa was well-managed and prosperous. In reality, when Nelson Mandela and the ANC came to power in 1994, they inherited a near-broke government and a very sick economy. Inflation was high, investment low, and growth negative. The white-owned corporate sector was risk-averse and oligopolistic. The distribution of income was the most unequal in the world, and, worst of all, the workforce had been hobbled by decades of education and job policies that had deskilled the majority black population. To create an enclave of privilege for whites, apartheid had wrecked the wider economy.

This book by Alan Hirsch, an economic advisor to President Thabo Mbeki, tells how the ANC responded to these huge challenges. Most of the news is good: the ANC adopted a market-friendly but social democratic approach to economics that restored public finances, resuscitated the economy (GDP growth is now almost 5 percent per year) and began to address the horrible social legacies of apartheid. Chapters deal with specific topics such as black economic empowerment, unemployment, trade policy, and macroeconomic stability. Technical issues are helpfully framed within the context of South African and ANC history. The writing is clear and straightforward. Anyone interested in modern South Africa should read the book -- not least white skeptics who warned that majority rule would lead to socialism, dictatorship and economic ruin.

Why did I give the book only four stars? For one thing, Hirsch isn't free to write frankly about debates inside the government or ANC, since hs still works for Mbeki. This limits the book's value as history. For the same reason, Hirsch can't own up squarely to ANC policy failures, such as the devastating growth of unemployment after 1994. This reticence is especially blatant on the subject of HIV/AIDS, which Hirsch barely mentions even though it's the biggest social and economic problem facing South Africa today. (Self-censorship at the top levels of the ANC has crippled discussion of HIV/AIDS ever since Mbeki embraced quack medical theories about the epidemic.) My final complaint is stylistic: Hirsch's narrative occasionally lapses into tedious summaries of research papers and policy documents, as if he went on automatic pilot while writing.

But these are quibbles rather than serious criticisms. Hirsch has written an intelligent and well-informed book, one that punctures myths on both the left (that the ANC "sold out" the revolution) and the right (that the ANC is extremist and anti-business). It makes a very constructive contribution to the public debate in South Africa, and deserves to be widely read and pondered.

            Book Description

Afro-pessimism has dominated the Africanist literature in the social sciences during the last twenty years. Many works characterized as such deal with what has gone wrong in Africa. In sharp contrast, An African Miracle shows how an African state and its people used their resources to remain free from the dictates of racist South Africa, achieving a high rate of economic growth while maintaining a solid commitment to democracy. The book examines the relationship between the dominant class in Botswana, its leadership, and the state in understanding why Botswana succeeded where other African states with more resources and talent failed.

The African Development Bank Group is a regional multilateral development finance institution the members of which are all of the 53 countries in Africa and 25 countries from Asia, the Middle East, Europe, North and South America. The purpose of the Bank is to further the economic development and social progress of African countries individually and collectively. To this end, the Bank promotes the investment of public and private capital for development, primarily by providing loads and grants for projects and programs that contribute to poverty reduction and broad-based sustainable development in Africa. The non-concessional operations of the Bank are financed from its ordinary capital resources. In addition, the Bank's soft window affiliates - the African Development Fund and the Nigeria Trust Fund - provide concesssional financing to low-income countries that are not able to sustain loans on market terms.

              Book Description

Why haven't development programs sponsored by local NGOs been more effective in Africa? In this careful study of NGOs in three African countries—Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Senegal—Sarah Michael exposes reasons why successful, well-run, and powerful development programs are infrequent in Africa. Michael's argument focuses on issues of power. NGOs in Africa do not command the financial resources, employ the professional staff, or have the same access to donors that NGOs in other parts of the world enjoy. Main topics covered in this probing book include: What does a powerful NGO look like? How does power affect sustainable development? What circumstances prevent local NGOs in Africa from wielding power? How can African NGOs remedy their absence of power? What relationship with donors and international NGOs should be cultivated? This book will interest readers concerned with issues pertaining to the organization, mission, and implementation of development NGOs in Africa and beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Why power is important.......2005-08-05

This book is extremely useful on two counts. One is that it explicitly discusses power as it relates to NGOs and their relations with other development actors. Secondly, it uses case studies to illustrate its arguments in ways that are meaningful for both practitioners and academics. While the recommendations in the final two chapters are fairly standard, they achieve new weight when putting them in the context of enhancing NGO effectiveness through responsible use of power resources.
