Customer Reviews:
Flash Developer "Must Have".......2006-07-15
Just about every time I need a technical manual, especially software based, I head for the 'Bible' series. I've yet to be disappointed. I'm sure every web developer knows that Macromedia is "the" software to use. Though I use Dreamweaver and Fireworks quite proficiently, I'm a fish out of water when it comes to Flash. This book held my hand and led me thorough the tutorials I needed to understand the workings of Flash MX and gave me a great feel for the intricacies of the software. The financial and time investments in this book are well worth it. I've paid for the book and software many times over in the lessons learned. As with the many other Bible series books, they're an arms length away on a shelf for quick reference, with post-it stickers marking the many places I refer to on a regular basis!
Great teaching and reference book.......2006-07-04
I am the type of person who likes to have a gigantic book. If I will have a study book, might as well have the biggest one, especially for technical ones. Of course, some gigantic books absolutely make no sense to me and I will fall asleep even before a chapter ends but this book kept me going. I already finished a third of the book and learned along the way. Also, I have no design or Flash experience at all so this is all new to me but this book does not make me struggle too much. With enough time and effort to do the exercises and study the examples that come with the book and CD, you will definitely learn Flash. This is a very helpful book. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn Flash and to those who want to know as much of the interface as possible.
Excellent Starter book.......2005-09-16
I buy every Flash Bible because they are the most comprehensive guides to Flash. This is a great book for people just starting out in flash because it will take your from beginner to intermediate Flash designer. It is also an excellent reference guide for the more experienced users.
This book is the awesomest!!!.......2004-07-17
Everyone in my office has a copy on their desk (if not multiple copies). I saw Snow Dowd talk at Flash In The Can. She is extremely knowledgeable in all matters flash related. I did not get a chance to attend Mr. Reinhardt's seminars, but I can only imagine the interesting concepts he had to share. The support website (http://www.flashsupport.com/) is also a resource of immeasurable value. All in all, when it comes to Flash and Action Script I would say Snow and Robert are the place to go for up to date cutting edge info (although I'm not sure I agree with Robert's anti-tween stance).
Great start . . ........2004-07-14
I've used this book for my Web Animation class and while it doesn't tell you every little thing you need to know about Flash. It's a great book to get started, especially if you need to work off of real examples then the cd-rom files included would really help. Although I wished that this book covered certain subjects in more detail and included more tutorials . . . This book would be good for beginners and maybe even intermediate users could use this as a reference. It gives you a nice balance of Flash animation and web design. However, after reading this book, you'll probably end up buying more books on Flash like me. If you're going to be focusing more on Flash web design, you might want to buy the Flash MX 2004 ActionScript Bible as well.

Customer Reviews:
This book is not for beginners!.......2006-02-17
I am no dummy when it comes to using software or teaching books, but this one is over my head. I am a beginner with Flash MX 2004. I would prefer hands on, step by step tutorials....at least until I have a grasp of the basics. At over 1200 pages, I am sure that I will be using this book as a reference in the future. For now, I need to start a little slower.
Excellent Guide and Reference.......2005-09-16
This book is an excellent reference for even the most experienced ActionScript developer.
Not for newbies........2005-07-26
In my opinion, this book is more for a reference than it is for a new person to a language. The basics are just breifly gone through. But almost everything is covered, even if for a brief bit. The book goes through almost, if not all of the classes and thier properties and methods. I just wish there were more on the basics, which I got from other sources.
So So.......2005-07-11
This is the second book I have purchased with Joey Lott and I have to say it is much better then the Remoting book but not by much. This book also has some examples that DO NOT WORK. Its rediculous to put examples in that are of no use. Besides that I really don't like his teaching style. He can get really confusing as he uses far to many terms to describe one word. Not only that but he switches as he pleases making you spend a lot of time back tracking trying to figure out what he is referring to. He also takes the long way around and I found myself taking a lot of notes to weed through and separate the learning from the babbling. It was really frustrating and I wasted so much time where I could have been learning. I have found better from instructors who are clearer, detailed and to the point. This book would probably be a few hundred pages less if he would do that. We would learn just as much.
This (like others have stated) is definitely not a good reference book nor is it a good book for beginners but if you are an intermediate and you have already gone through some tutorials or other books written by Joey (that way you know how to decipher his teachings/blabbering) then I say give it a try.
I got a lot of good notes deciphering his stuff into people terms which I have learned a lot.
An exceptionally comprehensive volume.......2005-03-26
It's not for beginners ? ok, it's not.
It's mainly for intermediate readers and it goes reasonably deep and covers an impressive wide range of topics.
It's not an reference guide, if you need one, get the ActionScript reference guide from Macromedia.
If you want to learn Object-Oriented Development with ActionScript 2.0 the Moock's book is the best choice. For me, the ActionScript Bible and the Moock's book are special volumes.

Customer Reviews:
good book - very bad indexing.......2005-02-11
Book is full of good information, deep analysis of problems.
But the VERY BAD INDEXING and organization of "how to get the information" is making it a chore to use it. It's ok the fact that much of the material is on the CD, but giving a clean way of reaching it would be a NECESSARY help. Too many words, too little code and examples and too basic FLA files obliged me to seek more advanced help in other books.
Still good as a reference though (if you can find what you need ...)
Very Thorough and Interesting Read for Flash Developers.......2004-11-10
I would recommend this book for current Flash Developers and anyone new to the field. This however is not a good 'quickstart' book. Being a veteran Flash Developer/Programmer myself, I still managed to find enough fresh information in this book to make it worth the purchase. This book leaves no stone unturned in explaining all the nuances of Flash that other books avoid. After you are already programming in Flash, I would recommend this to take the last step to becoming a complete master of the program. Although some parts seem to ramble on theory for awhile, all concepts are things that should be taken into consideration.
Not For Beginners.......2004-07-20
I consider myself an extreme newbie when it comes to Flash, so after reading most of the reviews for "The Flash MX Bible" I decided to shell out the cash. God what a mistake that was.
The only pro the book has, is it's size. Yes is does contain a lot of information, but the manner it presents it, is the biggest problem. It's boring, dry, unimaginative stuff. Not something you'd expect when dealing with a program that has a firm foundation in art, and creativity.
The thing reads similar to my Lightwave 6.5/7.0 college text book only with a worse format.
So if you're an intermediate, or professional flash user this is might be what you're looking for, but if you're an amatuer or total beginner don't touch this book unless you want bore yourself away from Flash MX before you even get your feet wet.
Buy something else.......2003-05-09
... There's also lots of useless filler material about non-flash related programs and topics. The examples are geared towards drawing and animation rather than creating an actual web document.
I bought the "After Effects Bible" and loved it but this book is a roundabout, unfocused exercise in frustration. If you are very familiar with Flash already, maybe you can get something out of this. If you want to learn from the ground up, buy something else...
Excellent way to learn Flash MX.......2003-05-01
First, this book does NOT cover EVERYTHING you will eventually want to know about Flash- notably the deeper areas of ActionScript. But there is another (excellent) Bible for that.
Why this book is great:
I read the first 720 pages like a workbook. Read a little, do a little. It is very good for that and helped me learn. I was not new to Flash and thought I could probably skip the first several chapters. As I started to *skim* them, I got more engrossed, slowed down and read carefully. I am so glad I didn't skip them. Even the most basic topics are covered so well you're bound to learn something new. If internalized, the advice this book gives on techniques and features, will make you a better Flash MX author.
Great for beginners and intermediate. When you get to advanced, get the ActionScript Bible to compliment it and you should be unstoppable!

I've been Flashed.......2005-10-05
A very well written book. Many examples and concise easy to understand language. Even if you have no coding experience this book teachs many fundamentals and promotes sound practices.
Macromedia Flash MX ActionScript Bible.......2005-09-10
I find this book very well writen. Info is complete and correct.
This is however on an old version of flash. As long as your looking for a flash 6 book this is the best text I have found. Works great as a refrence as well.
So So.......2005-08-02

Bulky introductory walkthrough.......2004-11-21
This is a very in-depth walkthrough of Actionscript MX. Though I was surprised that the authors chose to use the original Actionscript class syntax as opposed to the Actionscript 2 class syntax. It should have at least been covered. Otherwise the book is solid. It presents a thorough introduction to the basics of the language, then an API by API introduction. Each API section is covered in-depth with code samples and illustrations.
Comprehensive reference for intermediate developers.......2004-06-08
I bought four books to learn Flash ActionScripting, and rate this one second overall for is comprehensiveness and the practical insights that sip through: The author recognizes the initial confusion that is caused by aspects of Flash (such as the difference between Movie Clips and Button objects, the complexity of components) and did a good job of explaining them.
Obviously, a book of this size always has some chapters that don't match the reader's skillset or experience, but I found these chapters easily identifyable so skipping them was no issue.
My main complaint is the somewhat dated typography and layout. The book "MacroMedia Flash MX 2004 Advanced for Windows and Macintosh" was more of a pleasure to read. But that book doesn't reach the comprehensiveness and doesn't go as in-depth explaining things.
As always, computer books become dated before you know it -- I just noticed that the 2004 edition is coming out. Nevertheless, I found the MX version of the ActionScript Bible a very useful and valuable read and reference. If I didn't already have this copy, I'd definitely buy the 2004 version as a must-have for the Flash developer's bookshelf.

Customer Reviews:
Poorly done!.......2003-08-11
Waste of time and money. Pretends like it's going to tell you how to set up a 3d graphics engine and does no such thing. There's a little matrix math at the end of chaper 4 pretending to be a 3d manipulator BUT THERE'S NO CORRESPONDING CODE ON THE CD! The OTHER chapters have their code on the CD, but not this one. It makes me wonder if this one little bit of seemingly honest 3d code ever actually even worked. The matrix equations on pages 142 and 143 are totally screwed up like a proofreader never even LOOKED at the thing. Whole rest of the book is a pointless rehash of how to use Flash, Swift, Plasma and stuff you could get out of the respective user's manuals.
Poor form.......2003-06-14
A very poorly written book that ended up raising many more questions than answeirng them. I really question whether or not I was instructed in the correct way at all. Perhaps it was rushed, or perhaps the author just does not know the subject. From how it was handled, I am pretty sure the latter at least is true to some extent. I will have to find another book, I think.
Flash MX 3D Graphics Bible.......2003-06-04
I recently picked up this desperately needed niche book. I bought Plasma specifically because I wanted to create 3d for Flash MX and Director MX. Plasma is practically built for both of them, however, plasma's documentaion is weak and lacks intuitive examples for use with Flash MX. This book is EXACTLY what is needed in the marketplace on this subject right now.
I commend John Wiley & Sons for publishing this niche product and using an author who is obviously a veteran of the products. Matthew uses extensive case studies and examples detailing how to integrate 3d content in Flash MX. Swift 3d is covered as well (which I don't own so I skipped the chapter), but half the book covers Plasma to Flash MX integration. There is even a chapter dedicated to integrating Plasma 3d content and Director MX. Basically, this book should be packaged with Discreet's Plasma for anyone interested in integrating 3d content with Flash MX and Director MX.

Is it or isn't it coming?.......2004-08-08
It was supposed to be released in April. In June I got an email response from Wiley saying that they aren't going to publish the book at all. The book remains for sale on Amazon. I decided to order it anyway and Amazon says it is supposed to ship between Aug 5 and Aug 19... We shall see. When calling around to bricks and mortar book stores they say they can order it and have it in 2 days... I don't think they know what they are talking about either... How about an update on the *real* status of this book!!!
