The coursebook incorporates all relevant changes from recent acts, including the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 and the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003. Important new highlights include discussions on the impact of reduced tax rates on qualified dividends, new rules limiting the transfer or importation of built-in-losses, and the response by courts and the Internal Revenue Service to corporate tax shelters. The sixth edition also contains new material on corporate reorganizations and S corporations, rulings on Section 351 control requirements and corporate divisions, and more permissive eligibility requirements and other new statutory rules.

    4 out of 5 stars Corporate Taxaxtion - Lind.......2005-07-07

The book is great for case law. However, in order to grasp major concepts, you will need many supplements. There is a case brief book out on the market, which is keyed to the Lind book. Additionally, West publishes an accompanying book that serves as an outline and summarizes general concepts.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use for both a practitioner and a layman.......2006-11-07

This was written by three of my former professors at the School of Taxation at the University of Florida. The text mirrors why I enjoyed their classes and took 38 hours under them. It puts a rather complicated IRS Code interpretation into easy to understand practical applications.

3 out of 5 stars Difficult To Understand The Main Issues.......2005-06-19

This text includes cases that involve a lot of the accounting numbers without a lot of explanation about the tax principles that were used in deriving the numbers. The best supplement I have found is the Eighth Edition Federal Income Taxation supplement by Stephen Lind and David Hudson put out by the Black Letter Series by the West Group recommended by my professor which was written by one of the authors of the casebook.

    Book Description

INCOME TAX FUNDAMENTALS has led the market for more than twenty years with concise, practical, and current coverage of individual income tax preparation. Whittenburg and Altus-Buller's text/workbook format presents material in easy-to-digest sections with self-checks, online quizzes and activities, multiple examples, and review problems. Income Tax Fundamentals is the perfect text for a hands-on approach to tax in many class settings, including four-year colleges, community colleges, or career schools. This text is revised annually to reflect the current tax law. Tax Preparation software is included. The purpose of the Whittenburg text is to teach the most important and practical areas of the tax law to students, using a building block approach, with feedback at the end of each section. By the end of the text, the student should be able to prepare a fairly difficult return containing many of the elements seen frequently by taxpayers and tax preparers.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Simply Awful!.......2006-12-29

I have prepared taxes professionally for over 20 years and have taught tax preparation for 5. This book is the worst I have come across in that time and should be avoided at all costs!

The content and flow is nonsensical, there is literally no explanation about ANY forms or schedules, and the sample problems are illogical.

In Chapter 1 the book introduces all the various taxable entities including Partnerships and Corporations, which it then tries to cover in a chapter each later in the text. Who in their right mind thinks they can cover corporate tax in a chapter? And what about that is "fundamental?"

Chapter 3 has a single problem that requires the student to fill out a 1040, a Schedule C for a sole proprietorship, a Schedule D for a non-business bad debt, and a Schedule E for a vacation rental. This is very advanced material for the third chapter of a "fundamental" text.

I could go on and on about how bad this book is, but just be warned: RUN for your life from this book and any teacher/professor who selects it!

    3 out of 5 stars mediocre book.......2001-10-31

This book although it is detailed does not give enough information on how to actualy fill out tax returns. There are many problems in the book but the text does not really help in getting the answers.
    A mediocre book overall.

                Book Description

Financial intermediation is currently a subject of active academic research on both sides of the Atlantic. European financial integration raises major policy issues about the risks of banking competition and the appropriate regulation of banks and other financial intermediaries. The choice of Anglo-American vis-à-vis Continental European forms of financial markets is also central to Eastern Europe's transformation. This volume contains theoretical papers at the forefront of academic research that shed light on banking and security markets and banking competition.

                    Description:
This paper presents a dynamic model of imperfect competition in banking where the banks can invest in a prudent or a gambling asset. We show that if intermediation margins are small, the banks' franchise values will be small, and in the absence of regulation only a gambling equilibrium will exist. In this case, either flat-rate capital requirements or binding deposit rate ceilings can ensure the existence of a prudent equilibrium, although both have a negative impact on deposit rates. Such impact does not obtain with either risk-based capital requirements or nonbinding deposit rate ceilings, but only the former are always effective in controlling risk-shifting incentives.

From the author: This paper investigates the economic impact of client derivatives losses on OTC derivatives dealers. Its focus is on the capital market's reaction to losses suffered by four end-users of OTC derivatives products arranged with Bankers Trust NY. Evidence is provided on the impact of these end-user losses on Bankers Trust itself, as well as whether these losses produced any systemic or contagion effects extending to other major bank OTC derivatives dealers. Finally, the paper investigates whether possible systemic effects may be associated with bank specific characteristics such the level of derivatives exposure, counterparty risk, and reliance on trading income.

From the supplier: A general equilibrium model of banking is developed to study the following issue: when does expansionary monetary policy result in an increase in lending, and when does the policy simply lead to more inflation. Banks are required to hold nominal reserves and have access to deposit insurance; the financial structure results in a determinate deposit-equity ratio. Monetary policy is implemented by open-market operations and changes in nominal reserves and the policies are linked through the government's budget constraint. In this model, monetary policy has real effects because it can affect the amount of real wealth transferred between savers and dissavers, which in turn affects the leading decisions of banks and, hence, real output. The bank acts as a financial intermediary between producers and savers (households) and the government and households. The intermediation process between producers and savers is based on the Gale and Hellwig (1985) model in which there is credit rationing because of asymmetric information and costly state verification. When banks are able to write state-contingent standard debt contracts and monitoring costs are indexed for inflation, government reserve policy and open market operations have no real effects. This occurs despite reserve requirements, deposit insurance and the determinate deposit-equity ratio. While these policies increase the nominal assets in the banking sector, prices increase so that real lending and consumption allocations are unchanged. When monitoring costs are no longer perfectly indexed for inflation, in particular, monitoring costs rise (fall) by a smaller percentage than prices increase (decrease), an increase in reserves or open market operations increases real lending and prices.
