3 out of 5 stars Another 20 page book expanded into 170.......2006-03-25

Just like the Authors first book onthe LAW, this one could have been 20 pages long with some editing and organization.

Overall, the concept (the LAW) is worth knowing, just be aware that at higher levels its not as accurate as Cohen and Marty Bergen would have you think.

Its worth knowing about the LAW, just from a much shorter better presented source.

2 out of 5 stars cashing their tricks.......2004-10-12

The Law. It's not perfect by any means, but understanding it can improve the game of nearly any player of intermediate or better strength. (Rubber bridge players can get by without it, though advanced players ought not; matchpoint duplicate players can't survive without it.) Larry Cohen's first book on the subject, To Bid or Not To Bid, is a fabulously valuable explication of the principle.

Unfortunately, the Law is fairly simple and can be presented, as it is, in one not-lengthy book. Why is that unfortunate? Because Cohen didn't stop at one. The sequel, Following the Law, wasn't necessary, and it doesn't even manage to be valuable. Well over half the book is presentations of deals on which the Law was applied, or could have been. Golly, ya think it worked in those cases? Little is gained from these examples, and they serve only to justify a book that otherwise could have run around thirty pages.

Cohen also includes some tips on adjustments, but there's far too little of this, the most difficult aspect of applying the Law for most players. He also discusses the DONT convention in detail, but there are better explications elsewhere. The rest is little more than a rehash of what was clearly stated before.

If you haven't read the first book, do so. If you have, skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars To Bid or Not to Bid: New and Improved.......2002-04-26

If you have read Cohen's first total tricks effort, understood it, and incorporated the principles of the Law of Total Tricks into your competitive bidding, you do not need this book. If the Law of Total Tricks does not inform your competitive bidding decisions, buy this book or the original. The second effort has a cleaner presentation including a thorough description of the wonderful DONT convention for competing over natural adverse notrump bids. If you take your bidding seriously, you owe yourself a solid understanding of Cohen's total tricks principles.

4 out of 5 stars How to use the LAW well? Read this book........1999-04-22

Though I have read the book 'To Bid or not to bid', I have found that I often count it wrongly. This book tells me how to use it a real situation. It is very helpful.

Michael Warner of the CIA History Staff in the Center for the Study of Intelligence has compiled a set of key declassified laws, executive orders, NSCIDs, DCIDs, & policy documents guiding the role & growth of the central intelligence function from 1945 to 2000. He also provides an historical perspective on the development of Central Intelligence following the passage of the National Security Act of 1947, when the CIA began its statutory existence. As the Cold War recedes into the past & a new world order emerges, especially after the attacks on 9/11/01, it is important to understand why intelligence was centralized in the form it was, & to explore differing views about its future.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-03-15

I needed this. Before spending hundreds of dollars on software and classes to learn the software. Get this book! It really helps you learn what each Adobe product can do.

3 out of 5 stars Not really for beginners.......2006-09-04

I was a bit disappointed with this book. I followed many of the instructions to the tee as best as I could understand the "language" and it was difficult to follow. Not to mention, you had best know where all the tools are before embarking on the lessons. I can see this becoming a great reference book as I become more developed with CS2, but for a beginner I would not recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Common sense introduction to the software.......2006-08-25

I bought this book to supplement the textbook I am using for a class in Adobe Illustrator. Personally I think this book should replace that confusing manual. Like mathematics textbooks, most software instructional materials make the same errors. They assume that the reader already has a foundational knowledge of the subject, they fail to describe techniques in a true step by step fashion, and they subtitute jargon for plain English.

This volume, like so many in the Dummies series, does a good job of assuming that the reader is a raw beginner and meeting him/her at that level, leading them through the basic knowledge of the skill or topic in a laid-back, understandable way.

This is especially helpful to those of us too old to have grown up with computers (I graduated high school in '84, just as the Apple 2E was coming out - what a machine! Dot Matrix term papers and endless games of "Pong")! Bravo to the authors and to the entire Dummies team. Highly recommended!

2 out of 5 stars Mostly satisfied- despite dissapointing performance by Amazon........2006-06-06

First things first: This Ebook is not compatible with any handheld device. After many a wasted hour trying to get the ebook to work on a Palm, I called the publisher, who informed me that PDA features were blocked on this book. It took me several emails to finally get Amazon to acknowledge that the book was not "Handheld Compatible". Months later they still have not corrected the website, so I am left to assume they really don't care.

Part two: Why I did not demand a refund.
This is a reasonably informative book, with lots of good tips. The ebook format works well, and looks good on my Mac. Also, the ebook format is ideal for a computer manual, because you can jump back and forth between creative suite and the ebook, easily practicing what you learn.

This book has its shortcomings. There are some important topics that the book does not even mention. (like pathfinder and compound shapes in illustrator) Also sometimes the authors need to be a little more consistent in the names they use for tools and menus.

The book is good for discovering new things you did not know existed. I picked up many valuable hints I would not even have thought to look for. As a topic by topic reference however, the built in help that adobe supplies when you purchase creative suite is far superior to this book.

5 out of 5 stars An Overall View of the Whole Package.......2005-10-19

This book is billed by the publisher as being '6 Books In 1.' At 768 pages, it's a big book. As you might expect, inside it is broken down into six books, one each on:

                  Adobe Creative Suite 2 Basics
                  InDesign CS2
                  Illustrator CS2
                  Photoshop CS2
Acrobat 7.0 (What happened to the CS2), and
                  GoLive CS2

As is common with the 'For Dummies' books, each of these independent books are in tutorial format. That is, they start with the installation and then do a series of 'do this', now 'do that,' commands. This is combined with a pretty good indexing system so that if you want to go back and look something up, you can. This makes the book useful as a reference later on.

Five of these books I'd say are entirely adequate. Book IV, on Photoshop, I'd say is a bit weak. That 'book' is about the same length as the other books in this volume. But the Photoshop software is so much bigger, so much more complex that I think you only get your toes wet in this volume.

My suggestion is that if you are going to use the whole Creative Suite 2 package that you get this book and then another one on Photoshop alone. And since I like the 'For Dummies' books, I'd probably get 'Photoshop CS2 All-In-One Desk Reference For Dummies' to go along with this book.

2 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, but..........2005-10-26

As a graphic designer with a working knowledge of these programs, I should have known the questions I'd have would be a bit more in depth than an all-in-one book would cover. This book consistently let me down, sometimes not even covering topics I needed to know more about (H&J settings, layer questions, etc.). If you're new to this software, and need to know the basics, this book would be great for you. If you're beyond the basics - try getting whole books on the programs you're using.

Worthless is the keyword here. About as clear as mud. I purchased ACS primarily for use on a website. This book could not even get me past the opening screen of the GoLive program--I had to go to a non-dummy book (Adobe Creative Suite Bible) to get that info. Don't be a dummy--spend your dollars for smarts, which isn't to be found in this book. I wish we could give zero, or negative, scores.

                  1 out of 5 stars I was a Dummy for buying this........2005-08-05

I mainly bought this book to learn how to use GoLive. I thought everything was going fine until I tried to upload my site. First of all they left out the small detail that all your files should be saved in the Web Contents folder. Then when I clicked on the site icon, the icon which was supposed to be in that menu, didn't exist! The screen which they said you got when you clicked on this non-existent icon turned out to be the preference panal, the thing which should have been there, wasn't... etc, etc. It was like the last chapter was written for a different program! Finally, by accident I found in the drop down menu a way to upload the site. However, the only way to do that was to manually drag the contents from my hard disk folder to the upload menu and to put them in the web contents file. Everything worked, except all those photoshop files I had in the Pictures folder couldn't be transfered, so now over half my site has little blue and white questions all over it... Great going! The paper is even too rough for toilet paper. Maybe on a cold night when the power fails I will have something to burn....

This book was awful!!! I bought this for the Golive section, being new to GoLive I thought that a book like this could get me up and running in no time flat. BUUZZZZZZ! I couldn't have been more wrong. The subject matter is presented in an illogical format and runs in circles without really doing anything. For a dummies book I needed a brain brace just to find the ready made templates. I ended up getting a tutorial from the web to supplemment this book. Finally, I gave up! I returned this book and bought Adobe GoLive CS Classroom in a book. I accomplished more in half of the first chapter with the AGLCIB than I did with the whole section of the dummies book. I was so fustrated that if I didn't pay so much for this book I would have just thrown it in the garbage and have one less copy out there for someone else to suffer through.

Do yourself a favor and leave this one on the shelf. Seriously!

5 out of 5 stars Dummy No More.......2004-07-16

I got this book originally for the Acrobat chapters, but also knowing that I was ready to dive into Photoshop and Illustrator. This book has been a godsend! It has a permanent place on my desk for quick reference. Thanks Double Jens for taking the time to share your expertise with us "dummies"! Your book has made learning these tools very easy. I love your writing style and your ability to explain the differences of all the various settings and how to use the tools. Now I'm on my way to being a designer to compliment my developer side! Selecting Five Stars was an easy choice! Thanks!

                  3 out of 5 stars Don't expect too much........2007-09-27

The good - This book is an easy read as the Dummies books are well known for. The content layout is good and subjects are easy to find. The hints and tips are generally helpful.

The bad - The content was a bit too sparse. I will be looking for a more detailed book in the near future on Illustrator. With seven applications in one book, my expectations of a lack of detail were confirmed as was a lack of clarity on many of the applications tools and features.

The ugly - There are numerous errors referencing tables that don't exist, or table references that were just plain inaccurate.

I would recommend this book for somebody who needs to get up to speed quickly, but doesn't need in-depth detail about tools and features. Shop for your best price and you won't be too disappointed.

This book has all the information I will ever need. Definitely consider this book if you bought this program. It will be well worth your money and time.
