Book Description
Two riverboats. Two people in different centuries. Can love find a way to keep them together? While attending a dance on board the Memphis Queen III, Dr. David Stewart sees a woman standing in the shadows, dressed in black, with a veil covering her face. Lisette's old-fashioned clothes, speech, and her fascination with "new" landmarks common to present-day Memphis fascinate him. The next morning, David reads an article about the disappearance of the Cajun Star, in 1885, the most luxurious riverboat ever to sail the Mississippi. On the list of passengers he finds Lisette's name - and his own. Somehow, David must find a way to go back to 1885 in order to keep Lisette and himself off a riverboat destined to leave Memphis and never be seen again. Ask a Shadow to Dance will leave the reader breathless with suspense and desperate for David and Lisette to find a way to be together - in one century or the other.
Linda George has been a professional writer for more than 25 years. Linda lives in West Texas with her husband, Charles, who is also an author.

intriguing paranormal romance .......2005-12-31
On the Mississippi by Memphis Dr. David Stewart attends a gala on the fancy Memphis Queen III riverboat when he notices the woman in black wearing a veil. He wants to meet her so he crosses the crowded ballroom floor to ask her to dance with him, but when he reaches where she was standing she is gone. He assumes she left, but soon finds her on the deck. Still drawn to the strangely garbed stranger, he talks with her. He finds Lisette refreshing especially her enthusiastic almost child-like reaction to locales that can be seen from the vessel as if she never seen anything like these edifices before. However she soon disappears again without a trace.
He dreams of seeing Lisette soon, but is upset that he has no personal information to contact her. David reads a stunning article on the disappearance of the luxurious riverboat Cajun Star in 1885, which included on the passenger list the names of Lisette and David. As his logic fails him and he ponders what is going on David wonders how to save the life of a woman he thinks he once loved in a previous century but he knows he loves in this century.
ASK A SHADOW TO DANCE is an intriguing paranormal romance that will remind readers of the book and movie SOMEWHERE IN TIME. The haunting tale grips the reader at about the same that it grips David as he begins to realize that he is about to peruse an enticing woman in the shadows of time. The lead couple makes this eerie thriller work as the audience will be as haunted as they are.

Customer Reviews:
What an interesting woman!.......2005-09-03
I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Sauders and getting a copy of her book. This is an interesting woman who has 'sailed' through many adventures - both on and off the water. She speaks of many of the 'hidden' stories of what happens on cruise ships. The book is written with warm honesty, a quick wit and a great sense of humor.
Book Description
The author is a U.S Navy WW2 veteran; He served in the Pacific Theatre as a First Class Petty Officer Combat Medical Corpsman with the 128th (Pontoon) U.S Navy Seabees. His tour of duty included Hawaii, Guam, Philippines, Japan and numerous other islands throughout the Pacific including duty aboard 5 L.S.T.s (Landing Ship Tanks) This is his first attempt at writing a book-his other writings included magazines, Airport Bird Control Handbook, Hockey News (Canada); Editor church newsletter. A family reunion and meeting the book's two main characters generated the thought to write a book. The book is based on factual incidents that occurred during World War II. The invasion of Norway, ship sinking, train hijacking, falling in love, defection,imprison-ment, escapes, marriage, children, business success, and family reconciliation. Truly an Odyssey!

Book Description
Dora was a boat shaped like a swan.
Swan loved her.
"Doesn't he know she's different?" the other swans on the lake mutter to each other. Swan knows, but he knows that differences mean nothing to love. The frogs croak their disapproval and the fishes whisper it from below. Swan listens politely, but he knows love is never wrong. Even as the winters get longer and Dora's once sparkling paint begins to crack and peel, faithful Swan stays with her, certain that they must always be together.
Eve Bunting's deeply resonant text and Jo Ellen McAllister Stammen's resplendent illustrations combine with shimmering grace to tell a story of the transforming power of love.
Customer Reviews:
A lovely book.......2001-01-21
If you have children of any age, chances are you're already aware that Eve Bunting is an author of high quality, regardless of the age for which she is writing. Marry that particular caveat with the fact that this book is also illustrated magnificently by the no-less-superb Jo Allen McAllister Stammen, and you're in the ballpark for a winner.
"Swan in Love," however, tends to be a bit heavy handed for my tastes. The swan in the title, Swan, is in love with a swan-shaped boat with the name "Dora" painted on her. Swan has to endure the ridicule from the other swans, frogs, and fish in and on the lake. Rather than flying south for the winter, Swan watches as Dora is pulled from the lake, and sits by, taking up guard.
Inevitably, and predictably, Dora starts to become a little run down. In fact, it looks as though Dora's days as a boat are finished; her return to the lake one spring reveals too many leaks to allow her to stay in the water. She is pulled out, much to the distress of Swan.
The ending of the book is confusing to some children; after a small amount of explaining, they tend to "get it," but still are a bit disturbed by the fact that the love expressed throughout the book is all in Swan's head. The lesson being taught is that love, even unrequited love, is fine; it will be returned, even if only in your imagination.
I know, the actual lesson of the book is far less shallow than that, but I can only echo the sentiments of my own kids. Questions such as "How come it didn't show the other swans that might have loved Swan as much as he loved Dora?"
Swan isn't unloveable, and neither is the book. Pick it up and read it to your kids; it should engage them in some insightful conversation, if nothing else.
Beautiful story!.......2000-03-28
This is a simple, yet beautiful way for children to learn that it's ok to love anything they feel love for, despite any differences. The illustrations are magical and the words transcend the idea of love softly into any readers heart.
Swan in love.......2000-03-26
Absolutely beautiful illustrations! The story is wonderful too. Swan is encouraged by a greater power to love, even when others scorn him. Although the ending is a bit ethereal, truly a wonderful book.

Book Description
Embark on a thirteen-year journey through the stormy, madcap, on-again, off-again relationship between a Boston advertising art director (van Rooyen) and a Boston advertising film-director-turned-sailor ("The Captain").
Boat Bastard examines the torturous, slightly out of step mating dance that ensues between these two oversize personalities, complete with the requisite break-ups, reconciliations, and bloody bumps and bruises along the way. From Boston and Cape Cod to France, Israel, Jordan, and, finally, the Chesapeake, the Captain navigates this affair on his own terms, until one day, van Rooyen jumps ship.
With enormous wit and deadpan delivery, van Rooyen lays bare the very real experience of being the not-so-perfect woman trying to get it right with the almost-perfect man. In the end, she discovers that much as the Captain cannot seem to eke out much space for her within the confines of his boat, so too fares her claim on the affection within his heart. Van Rooyen finally emerges from the relationship with more than her share of sadness and regret, but also with the dignity that comes from having the strength to walk away.
Customer Reviews:
Sour Grapes.......2002-12-24
Two horribly mismatched people stumbling through a relationship that didn't have a chance in heck of working. I kept hoping that the protagonist would wake up and dump him if their relationship was as bad as the author describes. I also felt that there are two sides to every story and wondered what the "captain" would say if he could write a book. Was he treated fairly by "The Boat Bastard"? I doubt it. It must be terribly comforting to write a book about a break-up where you can airbrush your own flaws while highlighting those of your ex. Then all you have to do is admit to some not-too-objectionable personal foibles yourself to give the impression that you are being brutally honest.
I didn't enjoy this book and would not recommend it. A more apt title would have been "Sour Grapes".
Personal Journeys of Love.......2002-08-16
Two passionate lovers, moving at a different pace, their egos colliding at high sea and on shore. This is a 13 year trip across borders with their personal history and expectations of each other .
The Boat Bastard is a wonderful book and a must read for all on the ocean of love, or heartache.
"Hell Hath No Fury...".......2002-07-04
"Hell hath no fury..." but does not have such a talented one as she who has expressed it with the candor, love, humor, artistry and sophistication of this intimate memoir. Deborah takes you by the hand and invites you to visit the ports of call of this stormy relationship that are the tapestry against which she portrays vividly, and with remarkablke economy of brushstrokes, the human foibles of the characters, including her own, that bring to life this memorable and deeply moving human saga.It is around The Captain and his thoroughbred yacht, who at center stage display exquisite style and presence topside but considerably less elegant and accomodating selves below deck, that the protagonists are unmasked. This is the work of a compassionate artist whose sensitivity and generosity give life to a cast that is above all imminently human. It is, in no way, a "bitch and moan" statementbut rather an expression of courageously processed and resolved experience of abandonment and loss which keeps author and reader intact as they navigate the stormy passage.Deborah offers a compelling and delightfully readable book that belongs in everybody's beach bagfor a first read, with anticipatuion of many subsequent revisits.
Don't Miss the Boat.......2002-06-19
I don't usually read much in this genre but this one is juicy in form and content. Using consistently inventive writing and open-heart surgery with only local aesthetics for protection, the author travels over male-female oceans familiar in their choppy rhythms and treacherous currents. Yet she adds fascination through taking her own distinct bearings, standing on her integrity, getting blown off course, and finally finding safe haven - albeit not in the destination she desired. Despite the pain and love van Rooyen comes over as more than fair to her fellow seatraveller but I can't help but feel she jumped ship just in time. Otherwise he'd have sailed her into a sea of alcoholic despond infested with vapid wasps in what must be one of the inner rings of Hell. In the end, the feisty Jewishness that blocks her acceptance to the class and salt encrusted establishment proves to be a blessing - you need to read to the conclusion to understand what I mean - as Israeli directness rips the thin topsail of upper East Coast America's illusionary inclusiveness into shreds.
Each time my interest began to die down, van Rooyen found a fresh inspiration to keep me reading right through to the finale and even after that she had a unexpectedly entertaining coda of friend's comments. I hope she writes a mystery next time around as this is a talent to enjoy already and to watch in the future.
Brava,Brava,Brava,Brava........2002-06-13
Congratulations! You have created a masterpeice! You are lovable and forgivable. You are not the victim, nor the victimizer, you are honest, poignant, and funny. I knew you were funny, and sensitive, but I saw a whole different dimension to that in your book. Your intelligence and charm shine like a beacon. You are any woman, and every woman. Including me. I had a very similar relationship, feeling that the object of your affections was always slightly out of reach even though they were seemingly right there to be had. I rushed home from where ever I was to read this book, I was hungry for it. I wished there was more,as I dreadfully feared the arrival of the last page. Your recalling of details was so impressive, but then again, when you give so much of yourself to a relationship, you tend to absorb it all like a sponge, the person becomes your drug. I'm still thinking about the book, it had an effect on me, and I'm speaking objectively! That's what makes a story good, when you are still working it over in your mind. This world is filled with forgettable books, but this is not one of them. God Deb, I loved it, and I love you, and I
could go on forever, but you get the point. Well done...

Book Description
How does a sensible middle-aged family man suddenly find himself clinging to the tiller of a runaway sailboat and shouting for joy? The answers are found in this highly entertaining account of one man's late-blooming love affair with sailing.Froncek got his first taste of sailing in college, but it was not until he was staring mid-life in the face that he was tempted to try it again. Before long, he was swept away by an unexpected passion. Many of his new sailing buddies were also late-bloomers — and just as loopy as he was about all things nautical. Together they endured many rites of passage, from learning the difference between a sheet and a scupper to getting home safely after a big blow, and from finding an equilibrium between wind and water to balancing need and desire, boat and family, love and obsession.A Splendid Madness will stir fond memories among old sailing hands and newcomers alike. It will encourage those who dream of someday sailing their own boat, and will enable puzzled friends and family to better understand the strange obsession that grips those who adore boats and sailing."Candid and observant.... By putting his finger on his own pulse, Tom Froncek has recorded other sailors' heartbeats as well." Karen Larson, editor of Good Old Boat

Book Description
Just because electronic spreadsheets like Excel 97 have become almost as commonplace on today's personal computers as word processors and games doesn't mean that they're well understood or well used. In fact, many computer users – even those well versed in the art of writing and editing in Microsoft Word – have little or no idea of what they could or should do in Excel.
Do you fall into that category? If so, rest assured – you're not alone. Excel is a great organizer for all types of data, be they numeric, textual, or otherwise. Because the program has loads of built-in calculating capabilities, most people turn to Excel when they need to set up financial spreadsheets and create fancy reports with charts and graphs. But those aren't the only things Excel can do, and Excel 97 For Windows For Dummies can help you discover all the cool things you can do with Excel.
Written in a breezy, easy-to-understand style by veteran Dummies author Greg Harvey, Excel 97 For Windows For Dummies is the perfect resource for anyone who uses Excel, whether you're new to spreadsheets or you've been using them for a while and want to pick up some additional pointers. Here's just a sampling of what you can find in Excel 97 For Windows For Dummies:
- Moving around in the Excel interface
- Creating a spreadsheet from scratch
- Entering your spreadsheet data with ease
- Making your spreadsheet presentable
- Creating charts and putting your spreadsheet on the Web
- Working with multiple worksheets and collaborating with others
- Top Ten lists on setting Excel preferences, creating Excel macros, and customizing your Excel toolbars
So, if all you want to know is how to accomplish the things you need to do in Excel – and without having to become a spreadsheet guru – then Excel 97 For Windows For Dummies is the perfect introduction to the world of spreadsheets.
Customer Reviews:
Still holds up..........2002-08-29
Yep, this one is outdated just a bit, but I have to admit, I still reach for it when I need to work out those little problems with spreadsheets. This is a very easy to read, humorous, and down-to-earth guide to Excel. I especially love the chapter titled "Top Ten Thousand Keystroke Shortcuts." The chapter headings and sub-headings are very easy to follow, and the author includes clear screen shots that guide the Excel user through each step. The Dummies line of how-to books are excellent, and this is no exception. It still holds its own even with software upgrades.
Wonderful!.......2001-10-02
Very well written and easy to follow
Dumber Than A "Dummy?".......2000-07-23
You have to be far from an Excel "Dummy" in order to make good use of this book. It starts out showing you the various shortcuts and tricks that make Excel operate more efficiently, but it does nothing for the person who's knowledge of Excel is limited to booting up the program. My biggest gripe that at no point did it give you a start-up spreadsheet that would allow you to build your knowledge as you went along, using the shortcuts and tips that the book includes, so after you are about 100 pages into the book, you are saying to yourself, "So, if I want to set up a spreadsheet for my business, what do I put in 'A1'?"
My advice is to find someone who knows Excel, pay them the price of the book for an hour of their time, and go from there. You'll learn more in that hour than the entire book will tell you. That is, if you're a "Dummy" like me.
Couldn't have been easier!.......2000-05-07
I'm the first to admit, I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer. But when my job duties grew to include spreadsheets, I got smart really fast with this book. In just a few hours I learned not only what a spreadsheet was, but how to create one, and make IT do the computations I had formerly done by hand and calculator. I never thought one piece of software could simplify so much of my work load, and I never thought one book could teach me so much in a simple, easy to understand, easy to replicate style. I am now the Spreadsheet Queen, second to none!
Technophobe creates beautiful spreadsheet on first try!.......1999-01-19
Believe me, I do not delve into new software with eager anticipation and great optimism. Never having worked with a spreadsheet, I thought I was in for a frustrating, drawn out process in trying to learn Excel from a book. I quickly read through the first two chapters (delighted to realize that I already knew a bit of what was being presented)and sat down to create a perfect spreadsheet, replete with formulae and formatting! It was such a thrill to add this powerful ally to my bag of tricks that even after I had completed the work task at hand, I continued to read and play with the features. Fear not. Jump right in with Excel for Dummies.
Book Description
By itself, Excel 97 can do some pretty amazing stuff. Add Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and you add a whole other dimension of automation and customization. Excel 97 Programming For Windows For Dummies offers plenty of practical examples of Excel programming in action and explains in plain English how to
- Save time and improve accuracy by automating common tasks
- Design custom dialog boxes to suit your and your organization's needs
- Build specialized functions to use in your worksheets
- Create add-ins, take advantage of the Windows API, and define custom data types
With numerous books and articles on Excel to his credit, John Walkenbach is the ideal author to make Excel programming understandable, whether you're new to programming or just new to this latest release of Excel.
Customer Reviews:
Good starting point.......2003-02-07
Excel 97 Programming for Windows for Dummies is an excellent book for the Excel programming Novice. The book does a great job giving you a starting point that most VBA manuals and references do not. After becomming somewhat proficient writting macros the book doese not wear out it's usefulness as it can also be used as a somewhat clumbsy reference. The only shortfall in this book is that it doesn't provide reference more more excel commands that a user needs to make really useful macros (naming sheets, working with formulas, find functions, etc...). However, after mastering the material in this book and purchasing a VBA reference book there isn't any Excel challenge you can't overcome.
Never thought I'd love a 'dummies' book.......2003-01-04
Ordinarily I don't think I'm enough of a dummy to want a for dummies book. However, with no programming experience and lots of fairly advanced knowledge of Excel, this book alone was enough to turn me loose on learning to program in VBA. I had previously figured out how to do some very minor editing on recorded macros, but that was pretty much it. On my very first project, the book gave me enough ideas and support to program a slick set of routines that ended up turning a 6-hours/day task into one that ran at the push of a button in 5 minutes. Maintainance of the reference lists I built to use with Do-Loops took another 10-15 minutes a day, mostly in communication with users of my output. When people at my company express an interest in learning to do the kind of thing I did, I point them to this title.
Contrary to the reviewer who didn't want to use Excel's macro recorder as a crutch, I found this the fastest easiest way to discover the correct syntax for unfamiliar commands. This way I didn't have to tear my hair out figuring out the right way to say what I was trying to do - unlike the Access VBA utilities I later moved on to.
True to the Dummy Standard.......2001-09-15
Very informative, as all of the books in the Dummy series are!
A super companion to the Excel Bible. ;)
Not as useful as I hoped.......2001-05-23
Despite the high recommendations of some other users, this book is not as helpful as I wanted. Yes, it gives a good overview of VBA programming in Excel, but it is short on detailed, technical information - the type of information you need in order to actually write workable code. It spends very little time talking about manipulating data within Excel. This book often refers the reader to the online help. If I wanted to use the online help I would not have bought a book. It also expects you to use the macro recorder as a crutch until you learn enough to write code on your own. A good book if you want a high level overview of VBA, but probably not if you need to write lines of code.
A Great Book For Beginning Excel Programers.......2001-04-03
This book gave me the ability to write a macro to streamline a task at work (about three pages of code). What once took 15 to 20 minutes to do, now takes about 5 minutes tops. And that was after only reading about two thirds of the book. I can't wait to read the last third! If you know nothing about VBA, this is the book to get. It is very easy to understand and grasp the basics. The only down side is that I would have liked to have seen more varied example "themes" instead of using the same theme over and over again. Case in point, how to get Excel to recognize which workbook is active, and then do a different task depending upon the workbook that is active. It took me several hours to figure that one out, and no real examples in the book. It short, give an example and then show several different things that can be done with it, instead of giving just one example and then building on that. All in all, however, a MUST READ book!

Customer Reviews:
Limited Excellence.......1999-12-11
Walkenbach provides some first-rate coverage of Excel basics and his "Quick Reference" is highly readable, but at least one core spreadsheet subject--macros--is encountered briefly on page 22, then again only in the glossary. Still, worth the money (no five stars though). Note: If you're studying for MOUS certification, I recommend buying MacMillan's quick study guide in addition to Walkenbach.
