1 out of 5 stars save your money and pass on this book.......2003-05-26

I purchased this book thinking it might help me build a mantel shelf and found it to be worthless. This book is an lengthy advertisement to try to sell mantels. I don't recommend it as one can purchase a magazine to view pretty pictures of mantels.

5 out of 5 stars Good book. Please write more!.......2003-01-26

I'm an ole timey (senior citizen) fireplace builder for 51 years. This book was fun for me and is choice for learning secrets about a useful fireplace. Hey author, I like your classy and easy mantels and build some but I can't find any book anywhere that has a bunch of more complicated mantel plans that I can sharpen my beever teeth on. Help me anyone!! Good job on this book but please write a new one quick for us ole timey builders. I need pricey mantel ideas to put in my toolbox.

5 out of 5 stars Good for remodelers.......2003-01-22

Me and my husband have bilt and remodeled since 1939. That's lots of work. I bought him this book which he says is the best. He likes it for the details about new fireplace types such as the gasless. He also got good ideas on easy mantels. Buy it for your own good.

5 out of 5 stars Great Homeowners Resource!.......2003-01-13

My wife and I recently bought a new house and wanted to install a fireplace. We knew little about fireplace technology or what manufacturers offered. I had no idea until I read this book that there were so many options. The book describes in detail not only the many options but how they work and whether they're appropriate for your particular fireplace. The book also gave us great inspiration with choosing a mantel design. The book contains several mantel designs and how to build each one. The beautiful photos and construction illustrations were very helpful when we built ours. The big fireplace suppliers are also noted in the book with lots of helpful photos of their offerings. For myself, the wealth of knowledge I gained about fireplaces was priceless and very easy to read! I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about adding a fireplace to your home or redesigning an existing one.

5 out of 5 stars This book helped me a lot.......2003-01-13

I usually don't write book reviews but felt I should since I really disagee with the reviewers who gave this book one star. This book doesn't have any advertisements. It contains over 20 original mantel designs that my wife and I felt we could build from common materials. I am not an experienced craftsman, but this book helped me gain the confidence I needed to begin the project. We are quite pleased with the results. I built the "Oak Manor" mantel which was simple to build and was completed in a week of my spare time. Our friends can't believe how good it looks and I have loaned this book several times. The next fireplace I build I would like to be a ventless since this book answered all my technical questions and gave me several ideas on where and how to install various types of fieplaces. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about fireplaces and would like to build their own mantel.

From notable designer Sally Storey comes Recipes & Ideas: Lighting, Simple Solutions for the Home, a book full of innovative ideas for lighting every area around your home. The introduction functions as a mini-course in professional lighting techniques, going far beyond the standard one-overhead-light-per-room and discussing the possibilities of downlighting, wall-washing, and several other important lighting tools. Other chapters are divided into individual rooms, covering general needs (bright lights in the bath, reading lamps in the bedroom) and presenting a variety of unusual solutions.

Most of the ideas involve installation of new lighting fixtures--this is not a book showing you how to make a pretty new lampshade for that old table lamp, but rather one that will show you how to choose among lighting options to achieve very specific effects. One lovely picture, featuring a crystal chandelier, shows tiny recessed spotlights designed to highlight the actual crystals as art, rather than merely a fancy dining room light. Storey obviously has a great understanding of the practical needs for lighting around the home, and her suggestions on task lighting for the office or kitchen are both striking and useful. The last chapter is a practical guide featuring checklists, safety hazards, and explanations of different bulbs and control switches--master this section, and you'll whisk through that maze of light bulbs at the hardware store, knowing exactly which ones you need, and why. --Jill Lightner

4 out of 5 stars Easy to understand and impliment, creative.......2004-04-26

This book is a quick read and packed with creative ideas for the homeowner and interior design students. It is not an indepth study of lighting but more of a useful handbook. The organization of the information by room brings the reader right to the point without a lot of information clutter.

I would also recommend this book to computer graphic artists who want the basics of residential lighting for their projects.

3 out of 5 stars Good for modern-style homes, just okay for others.......2002-04-19

This book had a good overview of lighting techniques and ideas; however, all the examples and photos were of homes decorated in a very modern style, not applicable to most people. The same principles employed in Craftsman, western, or other home styles would have been useful.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good, but no measurements.......2002-02-02

The book is great, very good script, pictures and general ideas, explaining thoroughly the concept of how lighting in a room works: using general, task and feature lighting effectively. It lacks though exact measurements for placing lights at certain distances from walls, only mentioning, for example, that distance from wall depends on height of ceiling.
    Summary: good one to have.

    5 out of 5 stars Simple & Practical.......2001-05-25

I bought this book just before moving to my first owned little apartment. This is a beautiful book with many practical solutions for lighting. Well illustrated pictures with great ideas. I've applied some of the ideas to my small apartment. Besides, the beautiful pictures also provide me with some wonderful ideas for interior design. It has only 104 pages, hope there were more pages.

Made planning some good lighting ideas for a new construction house a whole lot easier. Clearly explains some needed basic principles and considerations. Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars long on beautiful short on technique.......2002-12-09

I bought this book because House Beautiful books always have gorgeous photographs, and I was hoping to learn more about lighting techniques. I am very satisfied with the former, but unhappy with the latter. For each picture they give a lighting tip, and describe the picture. However, the tips are very general, you could figure them out for yourself, and are therefore, not very informative. And, if you look at the picture you don't need the description they give. The only reason I give this book four stars is for the pictures. They are beautiful and do show different forms of light in various situations. If you like the magazine, you will like the style of the rooms shown in the book. However, if you want to learn lighting techniques, i.e. how to set up task lighting versus accent lighting, I suggest you find another book.

          Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Attention Tokyo Billionaires - This is the book for you!.......2007-01-16

I feel that this book is mis-categorized and inappropriatley titled. The description alleges that this book will provide "practical advise, the book guides readers through the steps, tricks and techniques needed to create a multitude of lighting atmospheres and unique decorative features for both interior and exterior spaces." This is not at all true. Unless you are a millionaire, Japanese boutique hotel designer, or avant-garde eccentric this book is not for you.

The first section provides examples of lighting schemes that are in no way practical - i.e. fancy built-ins from the homes of the very-well-to-do, a bathroom drenched in harsh neon-red light (I thought bathrooms were supposed to be soothing, not rage-inducing). The next section is basically a list of resumes from lighting design firms that would cost more to hire than the cost of my home.
This is followed by what amounts to a shopping cataolg of extremely over-priced, unavailable lighting pieces.

I was looking for ways to improve the lighting in my home, not by flying over some London-based designer, or spending $8000 on a chandelier the size of my couch. In addition to being inexcusably impractical, the book is poorly edited and produced. There are numerous descriptions for which there are no accompanying photos or illustrations; many descriptions accompany the wrong photo; and in one instance a sentence was cut off right in the middle, no punctutation or completion of thought.

If you cant read, but want to see pretty pictures of expensive stuff, buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous introduction to implementing ECC.......2005-08-11

I bought this book because I was designing a cryptographic protocol, and wanted to know if I could use ECC in my design. It begins with an explanation of "traditional" public key cryptography (i.e., cryptography over prime fields), introduces binary fields and elliptic curves, shows how to perform computations over elliptic curves, puts this together into ECC protocols, and then includes very useful implementaiton information. This book does a good job explaining not only how to use ECC algorithms, but why they work.

As advertised, this book doesn't go into too much mathematical depth, omitting most proofs. This doesn't mean that there is no math in this book; if you don't have a decent background in algebra (no, not the stuff you learned in seventh grade), you're likely to get confused. However, if you have a little background in theoretical math and cryptography, you'll find this a very readable and easy to understand book.

The one thing that's left out of this book are intellectual property issues. Certicom owns a lot of patents on ECC, and it's not clear which ideas in this book are covered by Certicom patents. This is a minor complaint though; overall, the book is excellent. It's rare to find a book that is so exactly on target. Highly recommeneded.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed and practical.......2005-05-17

This is the only source I've found that goes into the nuts and bolts of elliptic curve (EC) cryptography. The mathematical content is rich, although proofs are generally in references rather than in the text itself. The real value is in its many and detailed algorithm examples, and in the way it builds up to them.

Before it even gets into the text, Hankerson et al have created a model of clarity. In addition to the usual, front matter includes a list of abbreviations. If you've ever choked on the alphabet soup in other books, you'll appreciate how this makes the discussion much easier to absorb. There's also a list of the algorithms presented - what the practitioner wanted in the first place.

After an introductory chapter, the authors present finite field arithmetic in a thorough but readable way. First they present prime fields over the integers, then optimal extension fields and (most importantly) binary fields. There's nothing here for the cut&paste programmer, but dozens of algorithms help the thoughtful developer work through material that is immensely complicated in other presentations. Other goodies, like Karatsuba-Ofman fast multiplication appear here as well.

The third chapter is the book's real payload: EC techniques. I've been looking for years for a book that was so explicit in the how-to, without watering down the technical content. This is practical stuff - not just the theory of EC operations, but the techniques that make EC calculations practical for high-speed implementations.

The rest of the book - about half - discusses what to do with EC codes. That includes protocols for choosing parameters, public-key and signature algorithms, and standard kinds of attacks. It also includes hardware-level description of possible implementations, down to specific instruction sets and cache structures and different kinds of chip implementations. That leads to another set of discussions on attacks, the kind that go in through the power supply or RF emissions. Appendices provide or point to pragmatic details such as parameters to use or software support available.

The only thing that could be improved in this book is the index - it's just too brief, and lacks the thoroughness the rest of the book led me to expect. I hope you realize just how small a complaint that is. In all other ways, this book meets the highest expectations.

Highly recommended for anyone who needs to understand exactly how EC cryptography works, right down to the bit level.

5 out of 5 stars A very nice introduction to the field.......2004-08-07

This book is a must have if you are interested in implementing elliptic curve cryptography. It does not have any of the juicy ellpitic curve mathematics, but that is okay as this book is directed towards engineers and others who want to learn about how elliptic curve cryptosystems are being deployed.
