    Book Description

Financial Accounting: A New Perspective embodies an approach to teaching that has been developed by author Paul Solomon for over 30 years. The perspective is student-centered in that it motivates students by truly acknowledging them as business majors first-by taking them out of the preparer mode yet still emphasizing how they cannot be successful in business without accounting. Solomon begins not by talking about business and accounting in the abstract, but by introducing a realistic, concrete business case that students can count on throughout the book as a controlled environment in which to learn new concepts.

Solomon's text presents principles of financial accounting through a framework using the entrepreneurial running case, Cards and Memoribilia Unlimited, which is fully integrated throughout the text. This case engages the student while exposing them to the use of financial accounting statements and information in developing a new business and their role in business decision making. Early on in the book, corporate financial statements are introduced along side those of CMU. Solomon covers debits and credits but delays their presentation until chapter 9 - which may well prove to be preferable to skipping them altogether. Students are more prepared to cover debits and credits later in the course and professors are able to at least introduce these important concepts to their business and accounting majors.

Disputes over valuation issues fill the court's dockets and for good reason, fair market valuations are required frequently by the law. The authors believe that approximately 243 sections of the Code and several thousand references in the Regulations explicitly require fair market value determination. Consequently, taxpayers file an estimated 15 million tax returns each year reporting an event involving a valuation related issue. It is no mystery, therefore, why valuation cases are ubiquitous. I bought this book in conjunctioin with a business planning course taught by the author. I'm usually not a fan of most law books, but this book presents valuable content in a manner accessible to both law and business students.

2 out of 5 stars book is targeted to lawyers doing valuation.......2006-10-26

This book is targeted towards Lawyers who are doing valuation for tax purposes (have a court case where valuation is disputed). This book is full of references court cases which is not what I expect from a Valuation book. The "and Taxes" should have given it away but I figured it had to do something how valuation changes due to taxes. I would not buy this book if you actually need to do valuation. No examples whatsoever.

Buy it if you are a lawyer working on a Valuation case. Otherwise this book not for you.

". . . the presentation is lucid and the examples and math are not taxing. Furthermore, the pedagogical and other improvements in the text are more than marginal; they are major, and make the purchase of this second edition well 'worth it' even if you have the first."
--EVALUATION AND PROGRAM PLANNING, Vol 26.1

"Listing all of its virtues would be superfluous. Levin and McEwan have produced an excellent resource for teaching, a valuable handbook for practitioners, and a solid guide to research."

--David Plank, COMPARATIVE EDUCATION REVIEW, Feb. 2002

"Every student in evaluation studies and all who aspire to become professional evaluators must have some minimal knowledge of cost-effectiveness. The content of this book should admirably serve that purpose and should be required reading in all programs that prepare professional evaluators both inside and outside the field of education. The purpose of the book is to familiarize the reader with the uses, concepts, and applications of cost-analysis approaches to educational evaluations. Careful attention is given to outlining the development and use of cost-feasibility, cost-effectiveness, cost-benefit, and cost-utility as complimentary techniques for assisting educational decisions."

--Darrell R. Lewis, Educational Policy, University of Minnesota

"Those of you teaching cost analysis and management of human services systems should look carefully at this text. Human services professional managing systems are confronted with the problems of being increasingly more efficient. This text will help you teach those students entering the field about how to conduct analytical studies of their management practices. I award the authors many accolades for an excellent treatment of a very complex topic which is now translated into useable materials for management."

--Jon S. Ebeling, Political Science, California State University, Chico

"Research shows that smaller class sizes generate benefits in the form of higher achievement. But does that mean that reducing class size is a cost-effective policy change? This book by Levin and McEwan provides the analytical tools and concepts for educational policy makers to address that and many other policy questions. It defines and distinguishes various concepts of cost analysis, including cost-effectiveness, cost-benefit and cost-utility analysis, and makes a compelling case for their usefulness to policy makers. The book offers an essential analytical foundation for all policy makers in education interested in spending money wisely and productively."

--Helen F. Ladd, Public Policy Studies & Economics, Duke University

Why should applied researchers be concerned with cost-effectiveness analysis? Answer: Because it will enable them to discover if a particular program or policy has attained maximum effectiveness for a given budget. Designed so that an individual can utilize this book as part of an informal course of self-study or in a formal course on the subject, Levin and McEwan provide readers with the step-by-step methods to plan and implement a cost-analysis study. Through the use of numerous examples drawn from the applied literature, the authors explain, demonstrate and illustrate the four major techniques of cost analysis: cost-effectiveness, cost-benefit, cost-utility, and cost-feasibility. They examine issues that are pertinent to the choice of analysis and its implementation; the nature of costs, including how to identify, measure, and distribute costs; measuring effectiveness, utility, and benefits; and, lastly the challenges to incorporating cost evaluations in the decision making process. In-depth exercises are included at the end of each chapter to enable readers to sharpen their ability to evaluate policy options and program effectiveness. (The feedback to these exercises are provided in an Appendix at the end of the book). The authors also provide readers with recommended readings at the end of chapters and a comprehensive bibliography of methodological sources on cost analysis and educational cost studies at the end of the book. This book will enable readers to reduce the costs of reaching particular objectives, and expand what can be accomplished for any particular budget or resource constraint.

1 out of 5 stars Cost Effectiveness Book .......2007-07-30

The information on the Amazon web site regarding this book should make it clear that it covers CE analysis for educational situations; it has a very limited usefulness, as all examples given refer to education 'performance.'

    5 out of 5 stars A Required Reading on Cost-Effectiveness Analysis.......2001-01-12

This is an excellent book on the methods and applications of cost-effectiveness analysis. The book is lucid in its presentation, is filled with useful examples based on actual situations and analyses, enhances readers' understanding of the subject through succinct feedback to exercises, and provides an extensive bibliography of cost studies in education. It is highly recommended to readers who are interested in making informed decisions regarding more efficient utilization of resources and who are seeking an easy-to-read basic book to learn and apply the essential tools of cost-effectiveness analysis. It should be a required reading for students in evaluation programs in education and other fields.

From the supplier: The new City of Santa Clarita, CA's finance department devolved on Sep, 1988 when the first director assumed office and the first tasks were accomplished. Budget preparation, which entailed revision of the chart of accounts to project real revenue and expense, was initially attained. It was followed by the installation of a cash management system, an investment policy and an investments account. Finally, a city wide integrated computer system was chosen. The success of the initial jobs done were attributed to the hands-on ability and flexibility of the city managers and the finance director.

                Description:
This paper is directed at showing that there are features of accounting resistant to technical progress in legislation, auditing and accounting standards so that it is not so much that history repeats itself as that there remain elements of the practice of accounting beyond legislative reach. Such elements stem essentially from diverse and perhaps ungovernable characteristics of human nature and relationships. This situation is exemplified through two case studies documenting an extraordinary recurrence of financial mal-management in the case of the Bank of New Zealand (BNZ). Twice, the BNZ fell into the hands of forceful individuals with political connections who were able to control its management and influence lending policy with disastrous results. In both instances separated by nearly a century, creative accounting masked poor performance, and the government was persuaded to rescue what was once affectionately known as 'The People's Bank'. Such rescues represented a socialisation of losses, not least because the BNZ was shareholder-owned and those responsible escaped largely unscathed. Reliance upon the possibility of rescue may even promote riskier behaviour.

                  Book Description

The origins of this book lie in the Second Oxford Law Colloquium held in September 1992 and organized by the Faculty of Law of the University of Oxford and Allen and Overy. The subject of this volume, corporate governance, is one that is currently highly topical but which has a long intellectual pedigree. Ever since the formation of the first joint stock company there has been a continuing debate about the structure of corporate governance and the controls, both legal and institutional, that are, or should be, exercised over corporate management. The essays contained in the volume explore the debate from a variety of perspectives, but each keeps in mind that a clear understanding of the wider commercial and financial context is necessary before examining the relevant legal structures and rules. This wider picture is examined at both a national and comparative level, and the attitudes and practices of managers and investors are considered as part of the backdrop to competing theories on corporate governance. The contributors, drawn from the practising and the academic worlds, bring their own specialist knowledge to bear in a volume which will be required reading for all those interested in the subject. Contributors: Robin Leigh-Pemberton, Eddy Wymeersch, Sir Adrian Cadbury, Paul Rutteman, Paul Davies, Lord Alexander of Weedon, Paddy Linaker, Martin Lipton, Alan Paul, Theodor Baums, Geoff Stapledon

                    Book Description

There is little doubt that corporate governance has become one of the key issues for students of business and management in the 1990s. The text is the first to draw together the various strands of the debate from economics, finance, and accounting perspectives, and from an international angle that includes discussion of the issues as they relate to governance in the UK, USA, Germany, Japan and Eastern Europe. The editors identify four main approaches to Corporate Governance.
