5 out of 5 stars Come for the Doctor, stay for the writing!.......2005-09-29

These are some of the most innovative Who writings in years. You may not like each one, but you will walk away saying atleast someone in Whodom is trying new things.
The first story is a fifth doctor story about the origins of the Cybermen. The Doctor is a minor charecter and the main focus is a normal family on the cybermen home world as it is falling apart. Wonderful writing, and very sad.
The second story features the sixth Doctor in a typical Who story originally written for Tom Baker. It is the first meeting of the Sixth Doctor and the Brigadier. Quick, witty writing makes this a fun page turner that I was sorry to see end.
The third story is the 7th doctor and Ace called "The Rapture" and is the most bizarre Who story I have ever read. The Doctor and religion is something authors tend to avoid, and I find that sad. I would love to see more stories like this one.
The fourth story is with the 8th doctor and charley. It takes place in just three rooms and is another well written masterpiece.
All the stories were fun and fast reading. I really like the author's candid comments before each story. They enhance the enjoyment of the story and make me want to read the rest of the series. If Who is getting a little old for you, read these scripts and be reminded of the endless possibilities Who offers.

        5 out of 5 stars A wealth of information.......2007-08-03

As a medical student I do not just try to learn about the disciplines of the field in which I am studying, but also other areas I am less likely to get educated in unless I am in that field. I enjoy this book and read it as a book because it has a wealth of information in it to learn from.

The coverage in the fields of Hardware terms, electronics theory and IT fundamentals was much more interesting to me than I thought it would be, with several detailed diagrams and explanations that did not leave me feeling I had missed something. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to further their education in the terms and technology that help drive todays world.

        5 out of 5 stars handy book.......2007-08-01

I bought one copy of this book for myself and one for my Mom. We both like it and think that it will be a handy book to have around.

        4 out of 5 stars A Changing World.......2006-11-10

This is an good source for terms, though the Internet and the computer world is changing every day. Some words just can't be found in the book, you have to go online.

5 out of 5 stars Internet Computer Language Dictionary.......2005-08-12

A very concise, well-written dictionary of computer terms, language defintions, internet definitions, standards, computer interface devices, connectivity, etc. Terms are easy to find and the definitions are exact and to the point. There are even references to web sites where appropriate to further identify a term. The description of connectors is particularly helpful.

        1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2005-05-13

I can't count the number of computer terms and abbreviations I've looked for in this book -- looked for in vain, that is. The one that inspired me to go online and complain publicly was ICC. There is no ICC (International Color Consortium) reference! Unbelievable that this basic abbreviation has been left out of a dictionary of computer and internet terms. Save your money and use online resources for definitions and explanations.

3 out of 5 stars Quite good, but a few typos here and there.......2001-08-30

This book would turn out to be a great book without the TYPOS... It has extensive coverage on ATM, Frame Relay and other telecommunication-only terms... Many "NEW" Terms and Acronyms are included for example 3G Mobile stuff... which isnt much of a surprise since it was first published in January 2001...
My advice? wait for the Second Edition.

1 out of 5 stars For your mom, maybe!.......2001-08-13

This book has failed to define anything useful for me. It has very few terms for the number of pages, and the two sentence long definitions seem to be written for people outside of the computer industry. Not helpful at all.

3 out of 5 stars Needs more information to really be usefull........2001-08-08

This book is a handy reference manual to have around. With over 400 pages of terms, the information is a surface type of format, only giving the basic amount necessary.

From A to Z there are terms like ANSI, CDR, ELAN, ISDN, MUX, NAM, POTS, SMB, UDP and XID. Also there is a section strictly devoted to Cisco terms from CID, CNSI, EIRGP, FSIP, ISL, SDLC, TRIP and IRGP are but as few of the terms.

There could be a whole lot more added to this book including pictures of some things, a cd rom with an e-version of the book. Overall the value may not be worth the price.

I've recently been forced into the digital revolution. Although I have some knowledge of PCs, it's sometimes a challenge to get my computer to function to its fullest (my fault not the computer's) This book has been wonderful. There is so much useful information here, I'm not sure where to start. My favorite section is "tips and tricks." Tons of stuff on how to get the most from a PC. The book has articles on Web shopping, investing, travel, avoiding ripoffs, the history of the Internet, how to shop for a computer, and plenty more useful stuff about the Web and computers - and here's the part I really like: If I run into a word I don't understand while reading, I can easily flip to the dictionary and look it up. Even with all that, I think my favorite section is the 200 Cool Websites. I've spent hours exploring the Web using it. This is a great reference book!

As the communications technology field has exploded, so has the terminology. One look at this book evokes a sense of awe at all the terms that Information Technology professionals now have to keep up with. Fortunately, Gilbert Held has put every definition you might need to know into this exceptionally useful volume--standard terms, abbreviations, trade names, codes, and more.

This book goes beyond merely defining words and phrases to provide detailed tables and charts where appropriate. For example, after defining Data Network Information Code, Held explains what each digit of the code stands for and then provides a complete list of codes identifying countries from Australia to the USA. Similarly, the entry for Peak to Average Ratio Test includes an illustration of a chart showing sample test results. There are nearly 400 such tables and illustrations that expand simple definitions into more comprehensive explanations. Listings are arranged in strict alphabetical order with the digits 0 through 9 treated as if they follow the letter Z in the alphabet, making terms with numeric components easy to find. If your work forces you to stumble across new technical terms, you'll want to have this volume nearby. --Elizabeth Lewis

2 out of 5 stars very very brief.......1999-04-20

I was looking for a dictionary for a desktop reference - this book has lots of terms, however, I thought that since it was the most expensive book, and boasted 18,000 references I wondered how I could go wrong. However, I am sure there are probably 18,000 references but not the ones I need for WAN or data networking. It is weak in OSI, The definitions that I do happen to find are much too brief to help me understand any more than what the acronym stands for, which in many cases I allready know. The book does have some useful wiring diagrams/pin-outs that are hard to find, but rarely used, and other wierd stuff. I could have bought 2 other books for what this one cost. So I am shopping again.

              5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......1999-03-26

I was looking for simple, easy-to-understand definitions of words in the communication industry. This book had all the answers I needed, easy to locate in alphabetical order and has saved me hours of time completing my project. These terms cannot be found in a regular dictionary. This is a must for anyone in the communications industry.

2 out of 5 stars Many unusual errors for a dictionary.......2003-03-31

My first impression of this book was not good. When I opened it the first time, it was to page 233, which is the start of the N section. The first entry is the definition of a nanosecond, which reads

              A billionth of a metre.

Obviously, it should have been a billionth of a second, but is such an obvious error that it immediately calls into question the overall quality of the dictionary. The second entry of the N section is about Napster, which reads

              A on-line audio file resource.

While this is slightly better, it says very little about what Napster really was and mentions nothing about the file-sharing aspects and legal ramifications about data posted on the Internet.
As I read other entries, my attitude improved a bit, although I still was not overly impressed with many of the definitions. For example, consider the following definition

Visual Java++ - A Microsoft development environment for writing, compiling and debugging Java applications and applets. Visual J++ may be used to integrate JDK packages into Java programs, and to create multithreaded Internet and intranet applications. InterDev is included in Microsoft Visual Studio 97.

In this definition, the name is changed to Visual J++. If you are not familiar with the package, this would be enormously confusing. Also, the reference to InterDev in the last sentence makes no sense in this context.

The definition of Bluetooth is as follows:

A wireless connection technology for home appliances.

Which is false, as the majority of Bluetooth applications are for business and industry.

Finally, the definition of the Apache web server mentions only that it is used with Unix. Given that 63% of all servers on the web run Apache and not all are on Unix, this will come as a shock to many people.
There are many other examples of definitions that are inaccurate or inappropriate. From my perspective, this is inexcusable and the author and editors should be much more careful when they check their work. Since the book is copyrighted 2003, they cannot appeal to the advance of technology to explain their errors.

5 out of 5 stars Bridges technical and technical terminology.......2001-05-27

This is a handy reference for consultants, IT professionals and business analysts who are becoming overwhelmed by a barrage of new terms.

Reading through the terms and definitions in this book makes it apparent that E-business has little new terminology. Instead, the barrage of new terms has its roots in the blending of business and IT disciplines that characterize E-business. Because E-business encompasses both the business and technical domains, it's essential that business professionals learn IT terminology and IT professionals learn a business terminology. Consultants have to be well versed in the vocabularies of both domains, and are further burdened by the fact that we need to understand the unique vernacular of many different vertical industries. This book solves that by providing succinct definitions of terms covering a wide landscape of business and technical. Since E-business is inescapable, this book is a wonderful desk reference to which you'll probably refer frequently. It's complete and clear, and covers most of the IT terms and many of the business terms you're likely to encounter - at least until new ones are minted.
