Book Description

Casino Gambling can increase your chances of winning and decrease your chances of losing in your next casino session.

Chapters 9 - 14, a lesson on dice control, shows you how to create your own advantage over the casino by minimizing the chances of throwing the losing seven and how to throw the long hand and score on your point numbers. The winning craps system is in Chapter 12 -- dice set, grip, focus and throw -- in words and pictures. Read it and use the winning craps system to create own edge over the casino.

Chapters 3 - 8, reveal the clues and a winning gambling system for finding winning blackjack tables. Sit down at one of these tables with an excellent chance of winning.

Chapters 15 - 17 define exactly what a roulette dealer signature is and describe the three types of dealer signatures (predictable patterns).

Chapter 17 presents a winning gambling system to enable you to detect and exploit a dealer signature and Get an Edge at roulette.

Chapter 2 details the eight decisions you make in every casino gambling session; learn how to make them the right way to maximize your chances of winning and minimize your chances of losing in each of your casino gambling sessions.

Chapters 4, 5 and 6 explain why card counting in blackjack doesn't always work the way it's supposed to and disclose how to avoid losing on the high count hands; i.e., when to bet up and when not to bet up on the high-count hands.

Chapter 18 contains an interesting story about “The Streak” and describes a betting strategy to exploit player/dealer patterns in the game of baccarat.

If you gamble on the Internet, don't make that next click until you read Chapter 21 to learn how to avoid the pitfalls and exploit the winning possibilities.

Before your next trip or any trip to the casinos, be sure to review the 16 axioms of successful casino gambling described in Chapter 2.

If you're planning a trip to Vegas or any other casino gambling destination and want some quick and easy-to-follow advice to give you a good shot at coming home a winner: Read Chapter 7 for blackjack advice, Chapter 13 for craps advice, Chapter 17 for roulette advice, Chapter 18 for baccarat advice or Chapter 19 for advice on the popular variations of casino poker.

I looked at this listing and found that the description was for the "paperback" version. Well this book, "Casino Gambling: Winning Techniques for Craps, Roulette, Baccarat and Blackjack" (C)1982-3 is said to contain chapters with silliness like how to control dice and spot a roulette wheel. That description is NOT for this book! It is for a book called "Casino Gambling : A Winner's Guide to Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, Baccarat, and Casino Poker" (C)2000. The newer book lists several authors. The added sections must be from the new authors and account for the lame "beat the system" advice. The 1983 book is very solid with excellent math and logic only! It tells you up front that you can't get an edge on a casino but shows you exactly what the house edge is on every single bet. This makes you an informed consumer at a casino. Such a book is refreshing in a sea of books about gaming that purport to give you a "secret" to gain riches. HA! The best you can do in a casino is either get up early and stop, (but you could also get down early) or play smart and loose small amounts slowly while enjoying the game and maybe some free drinks. If you want to learn to play casino games and want the straight info about the risks of each play, this book is perfect. If you want to hear a fairytale about how to "beat the house" look any ware else. PS this book IS paperback as well. ISBN: 039950656X

1 out of 5 stars Should be listed in humor category.......2004-08-25

This book is great, it's very funny and will provide many laughs. Unfortunately, if you are looking to read a book on how to gamble well, this is not it.

This book states how to beat Craps (controlled rolling of the dice to land on certain numbers), Blackjack (taking advantage of non-random shuffling and finding groups of high and low cards), and Roulette (watching for a zone on the wheel where the ball repeatedly falls due to the dealer throwing the ball with the same speed).

These methods of how to beat the casino are all completely irrational, unattainable, and at times just plain ridiculous.

If you could beat craps by controlled throwing of the dice, don't you think the casinos would recognize this and change their dice rolling procedures. To avoid having controlled rolls is the exact reason is why they make you hit the back wall in the first place.

If you could beat roullette by taking advantage of dealer memory, where they always throw the ball with the same speed and therefore produces certain zones on the wheel that are hit consistently, don't you think the casino would recognize that certain numbers hit more frequently and change their procedures. The obvious fact that the Author fails to mention is that in order for this method to work, the dealer would always have to throw the ball with the exact same speed and he/she would always have to release it at the exact same spot on the wheel...which is nearly impossible or at least so low a percentage, that I would not bet on it!

The Blackjack stategy is the only one that even resembles rational thought, but even this method of taking advantage of non-random shuffling and finding pockets of either high or low cards and then increasing or decreasing your bet accordingly fails to mention one obvious fact. Even if you do see pockets of high or low cards, you never know how big the pocket is...you could see two hands of all high cards, change your bet accordingly, then the next hand could change to a pocket of low cards.

In summary, this book tells you how the Author consistently beats the casino using these methods...I think the Author needs to realize that he is just getting lucky using his less than scientific systems. If you want to read a book on how to gamble well you should pick one that explains how to minimize your losses, by decreasing the house edge. At least find one that is non-fiction!

5 out of 5 stars Good Book!.......2004-08-19

This book helped me incredibly understand the odds and help beat the casino at their games. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent handbook.......2004-02-01

I found this a delightful book. It's very easy to read, covers all the major games, and contains lots of practical, useful advice.

And at less than $20, it's excellent value for money.

My only criticism (a very minor one) is that the Roulette section focuses mainly the "double-zero" wheel, used in the USA. The "single zero" wheel used in Europe and in Australia, doesn't get much coverage.

However, this is a minor issue. Overall I found this an excellent book, containing a wealth of useful advice.

            4 out of 5 stars Skeptical beginner.......2006-01-14

I wanted to learn blackjack so I wouldn't throw all my money away on the slots like I usually do. So one day I haphazardly peruse the gaming section of my local bookstore and leave with the most unique view on the game I have ever seen.

The author is very thorough in describing several different scenarios of tables and gives great information about how to decide when to use the techniques that go along with them. Most people are looking for a sure fire way to win and the truth is that there really aren't any. But, armed with the information presented in this book you will probably end up winning more times than losing and when you do lose (as you invariably do) the author also mentally prepares you for this contingent and helps you in walking away still feeling like a winner.

This would be a 5 star review except that he is pretty heavy handed in trying to sell you to his moderately expensive blackjack home study course. This is the only complaint I have though and the good far outweighs the bad.

3 out of 5 stars Much useful info, but heavy sales pitch.......2003-12-10

This book is useful for anyone who wants to win at blackjack. As an experienced player, I can attest that the info provided herein is comprehensive, complete, accurate and useful -- and if followed correctly will permit you to beat the casino at blackjack.

However, I subtracted 2* because the author refused to provide his current system for winning, instead teasing the reader with a not so thinly disguised sales pitch. Anyone who writes a how-to book but leaves out the how-to instructions should be pilloried.

In sum, I think both experienced and inexperienced players can benefit from his advice, but will be disappointed that the greedy author has chosen not to share his current strategy.

3 out of 5 stars For entertainment purposes ONLY.......2003-01-19

Brief: If you are going to play blackjack then the price of this paperback book isn't bad for understanding some of the interesting details about this game.

Rule #1: Players who play a system lose systematically.

Rule #2: Casinos have made much money on those that think that they can out-smart the casinos.

I have played on BJ teams, roulette teams (wheel and dealer bias), race and sports books. The race books have been my ONLY long-term money-maker (I would qualify this though in the right forum). I feel that I have played every system ever invented/constructed/fabricated known to humankind. I've read every book, every critique, and paid enormously for every "SYSTEM" sold out there. Since I am independently wealthy, I could afford to buy such things and try them out as much as I want. I did, and my advise to you: you will not beat the casinos. I will put all my money on that. Unfortunately, many live on fantasy alone, much to their own undoing.

I've met Jerry Patterson in the late 80's while exploring a few systems. Generally, he is a person of integrity. I understand that his research into systems brings him into contact with many that make his life a frustrating soap opera. Such is the battle-ground, I suppose. I respect Jerry Patterson for his extensive work in this field.

My advise to you is simple: some people make money doing that one thing that is claimed to make you money, and other people sell information about making this same money. Well, why sell this information if you are happily making such money? If Jerry Patterson can't make a good-enough living on his talents in this field (and he is, at the very least, one of the best players), then why do you think you can?

If YOU found a great system for beating craps, blackjack, the slots, horses, or NFL playoffs, THEN would you publish how others can similarialy benefit, OR, --if it is such a great system--, just go about making your good money?

Publishing books and systems on how to beat the casino is a way to make money. It is not very good money, but good enough with decent sales. This, of course, wouldn't approach what may be implied in the money that could be made if following this "system" in the field. Right? So, again, if you have a winning formula, why go hawk it to the public, if not to make sure, but small, money on it from publishing rather than seldom successful practicing of it.

Think about this until it makes sense.

With the price of this book, I DO believe it is well worth the read if you plan on doing BJ as entertainment only. If your looking for a way to make a lot of money, then, sorry, don't let me embellish your imaginary world.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all blackjack players.......2002-03-14

Jerry L. Patterson, with over a quarter century of teaching blackjack, has in one single book provided the most comprenhensive analysis of the game that is currently available. As oppopsed the the majority of blackjack books, which promote mechanical systems, he provides a complete understanding and a thorough analysis of every facet of the game. By following Patterson's teachings any blackjack player will benefit and if after reading the book one cares to further their knowledge there are courses that the author provides.
Jerry Patterson is one very few widely respected experts in the blackjack education business and has an extremely large group of loyal followers, who over the years have prospered from his knowledge and teachings.

My wife just loves Vegas but I got tired of losing money on every trip we made there. A few years ago we were waiting for a plane to leave and I picked up the first edition of Jerry's book in the airport to read on the way home. I just knew there had to be a better way. Jerry not only changed my thoughts about blackjack but about gambling as a whole.

I've read almost every blackjack book I could get my hands on and most are very technical and filled with statistics that work well for those who enjoy playing theoretical games against a computer but this is the only book that shows you how to beat the real game in real live casinos. When I heard the new edition was coming out, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I wasn't disappointed. I now am able to evaluate any game of blackjack before I sit down in a way that no other author has ever described. This book paid for itself many times over on my first trip back to the casinos.

Thanks Jerry! Las Vegas is much more fun now that I come home a Winner!!

this author better stick to his day job. This book is terrible. The story is chopped up, typo errors, and almost painful to read. Big letters, a very short book, no real good advice on BJ. 1 star is too much.

Do you finally want to enjoy the game of Blackjack? If you know basic strategy, are not a math expert, and would like to put your arms around a proven, easy to do four point system based on simple random probablilty, then this is a book for you. If you simply want a little excitement, murder, and mayhem mixed with inspiring relationships then the characters in this book fill that bill as well. Mr. Newgate has brought his proven personal perspective to the art of Blackjack and the people who play. This is recommended reading before any trip to the Casino.

5 out of 5 stars A great mix of blackjack strategy and character stories.......2004-07-20

This book is interesting in that it reads very fast and teaches blackjack in a fun, fast and easy manner - although I think even hardcore gamblers will appreciate the logic of the method. I enjoyed the storylines as well, and they will help keep the attention of those who don't enjoy the statistical explanations.
Like "The Goal", a manufacturing book by Eliyahu Goldratt, this book is a great mix of strategy AND story.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good GUI coverage.......2006-11-17

I'd been using Matlab for several years (completely self-taught) and wanted to learn how to set up a simple GUI for some routine tasks I was performing at work. I borrowed this book from a coworker, but plan to buy it in the near future. I have the "Mastering Matlab 7" book, which only covered how to use individual GUI elements. There wasn't much in the way of how to structure a GUI program, which is the niche I feel this book handles nicely, even going into a bit of animation type stuff, which is handy for using the mouse to interact with a plot, among other things.

After reading the GUI chapter in this book, I was able to create a simple GUI without much difficulty. I was happy to see that the old functions that I had previously written required only very minor changes to interface with the GUI. Understanding the structure of a Matlab GUI was the key that this book excells at in my opinion.

Now that I've made a "decent" GUI (albeit simple, I'm not a software engineer), I just clone and modify it for the next GUI that I need. This book will definitely provide a good jumping-off point for GUI development. The rest you can learn by doing.

I would most definitely say that a thorough understanding Matlab's "handle graphics" is a REQUIRED pre-requisite before trying to do GUI operation.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful, made constructing GUIs a breeze.......2005-08-04

I mainly wished to just make a GUI interface, but then I found i needed some graphics and found this book to be very helpful in both categories. For the GUI section, there were many options available for making a GUI and all options were clearly laid out from the use of global variables, to using GUIDE.

              3 out of 5 stars Quick Look.......2005-02-16

This is not a book for beginners who want to learn MATLAB or GUI. If you already know how to run MATLAB and know some GUI, then you may find this book useful. It will improve your graph and GUI skill. If you have no knowledge on how GUI is created, this is not a book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Best text on Matlab GUI development.......2004-08-07

This is the best book I have found on developing GUIs in Matlab. Other reviews claim that the coverage of GUIs is limited. I agree that the coverage is limited, but yet it is the "less limited" coverage I've found. It is true that there is only one chapter on GUIs. Yet, this is the last and longer chapter in the book. Before buying this book, I tried to learn how to develop GUIs from the Matlab manuals but got only poorly-developed GUIs. with unbearable "side effects" (mainly related to using the Matlab base workspace). This book taught me how to avoid these side effects and how to develop GUIs that are self-contained and whose interaction with the Matlab base workspace is minimal or null. I highly recommend this book to anybody who needs to develop GUIs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference and Learning Tool.......2003-06-04

This book does a good job of going into the details of handles and properties to allow the reader to get a good feel of how to use the tools available. There are also good examples in the book. I have worked with quite a few different languages so I found it very enjoyable to read, but I don't know that a beginner will have a good feel for the execution of code associated with a user action (ie Buttondwnfcn) or not. I think if they take time with the examples they can get a good understanding though. Excellent book!
