Entertaining at times, annoying at others..............2005-06-14
I got this book as a present and was immediately excited. I am a HUGE buffy fan and relish any chance to delve deeper into my obsession. While I enjoyed most of the book including the bios, mini analyses of the episodes, I was bored by the fan and party coverage (who cares? it was like 2 years ago!), and a little offended by the author's off-putting feelings towards some of the characters (give Riley and Joyce half a chance). The most annoying part however was the obvious mistakes this so-called "fan" Nikki Stafford made in relating her "nitpicks" of each episode. She points out each "oops" the show made as far as bloopers but I guess she failed to pass this on to an editor because there were a lot of mistakes made concerning her knowledge of the buffyverse. When she couldn't find something substantial to write she floundered, the most obvious point being in the "Buffy vs. Dracula" nitpick section. Ms. Stafford complains that even though Dracula breaks most of the vampire rules, he would still need an invite to enter Buffy's room and you can feel her arrogance when she points out that somehow the writers messed up this technicality. However, later in the episode it is revealed that Joyce had invited him in for coffee and then there is a whole 5 minute scene between Joyce/Willow/Tara discussing her inviting a man into the house. Then, in the next episode it is mentioned again that Joyce mistakenly invited Dracula in. I really wouldn't care about Ms. Stafford's rants if this weren't a "guide to Buffy" written by someone who does take the show seriously and is a little too arrogant when every now and then there is an inconsistency in the show.
Bottom line: I enjoyed reading it, but I enjoyed correcting it even more.

This book may be the best guide about Buffy around, but this not means that it's a stisfactory product. Because it's not.
The enormous volume of pages dealing about parties, whatever, are useless. And, most importanyl, it lacks an index to the world of Buffy, something that would run something like this:
"Willow" - Buffy's best friend. Went from a very shy girl to one one of the most powerful witches in the world, blá,bla;
"Ethan" - Gile's old friend from England, when both them, along with some friends, dealed with the black arts. Appeared for the last time in the episode bla, bla, bla..."
It would have been a huge task, but that was what I was looking for when I bought this book, and was dissapointed when I did not find it.
The part of Angel I don't care, bcause I still did not watch this show (I intend to start buying the DVD sets).
The Best Buffy Companion Out There.......2004-06-01
This is the absolute best Buffy guide out there. The book includes DETAILED episode synopsises through the sixth seaons of Buffy and the third season of Angel. Unlike the Watcher's Guide's, these synopsis's are very thorough, as are each actors profile. The book also chronicles the show from its movie beginnings, through each season, to the show's move to UPN. Each episode guide includes the writer's personal favorite moment of the episode, interesting facts, Did you notice moments, Nitpicks, and bloopers from each episode that are fun to scope out.
The book also has an incredibly challenging trivia section, which prompts one to go back and watch the episodes over and over again. Also included are each actors personal websites, as well as good fansites, are included. Having bought many companion guides to this show, I personally say this is the best, for any looking to wise up on Buffy, or maybe simply to extend their Buffy collection.
Best Buffy guide out there.......2004-03-24
Yes, I admit it, I've become a Buffy addict - not normally a TV watcher, I became sucked in by its blend of great writing, humor, drama, and honest portrayal of emotions. In addition to all the seasons on DVD, I've picked up quite a bit of the buffy literature - guides, essays, etc. - and this is the one I keep coming back to. I much prefer it to the more often-cited Watcher's Guides. What some reviewers criticize - the emphasis on Stafford's reviews and opinions - are what i consider the book's strength. None of the other guides offer such a personal take on the series or episodes - and it's a series people relate to in a highly personal way. I don't always agree with the author, and even disagree that a few of the "nitpicks" she found were actual errors, but her opionated views make for much more interesting reading. In a few cases, her opinions made me more clearly define my own, or see an episode in a new light.
I love the information on music at the end of each episode, and the other chapters - on the actors' biographies, the posting-board parties, the internet following for buffy - are all pretty comprehensive. This is a fan's take on a show she loves, in addition to being a guide - which, in my opinion, makes it more interesting for another fan to read. So what if she's unduly harsh on Joyce and Dawn? She backs up her opinions with valid reasons, which others are free to disagree with. I disliked some eps ("Gingerbread," "Beauty and the beast," "As You were") that she liked, liked others better than her, and agreed with her on many more. But I always enjoy her take.
I do wish the section on angel was more thorough - she acknowledges it's pretty cursory compared to Buffy, and my hope is that a future book will flesh it out. But if you want a good buffy episode guide, skip the watchers guides and just get this one. My copy is worn i've gone back to it so often.
My Buffy Bible.......2003-09-29
I absolutly love this book. It is entirely complete (well, up to season six anyway... I'm really hoping they do another revision with season seven added... I'd buy the whole damn book again if they did it) and full of information. This one book gets in all the good stuff that the watcher's guides do in two. When I bought this book I had only seen up to season three, and I was beginning to watch seasons 4-6 in reruns, and I read this book right along with watching the episodes.
Some people have a problem with the opinionated way the author writes the book, but to me it enhances the feel of it being a fan's book.
In short, I love this book, and you should too! ^.^

It's a good thing this book is out of print. It's pretty bad - full of innaccuracies and it reads like the author assembled a lot of the information from bits and pieces of magazine articles. Also, fully a quarter of it has nothing to do with Buffy at all. It feels like the author ran out of relevant material and just added in a bunch of junk to fill it out.

This wasn't the best buffy book, but it did have some picturesi've never seen before and it had an okay biography on Sarah. thebaack of the book is all about ohter vampire and sci-fi books and shows though, i didnt even read that whole part, it sucked. but the rest of the book was pretty cool, since it was about the hottest woman on Earth of course.

This book does, in a great way sum up all episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer from "Welcome to the Hellmouth" too "Becoming, part II". Also, it contains a thorough biography of mrs. Gellar's acting career from her first appearance on "Invasion of Privacy" to todays Buffy, I Know What You did Last Summer and "Scream 2". In doing so it gives all Sarah Michelle Gellar fans all the knowledge they need aout their Idol.
Buffy Xposed a real good fireside book.......1999-02-15
This book is good. It is an unofficial guide to the world of Buffy but it has some really cool stuff like extensive reviews of the first two seasons' episodes, a by no means extensive internet guide to must see Buffy sites and entertaining looks at the influence of "Dark Shadows" on the show and also a history of vampires on television and movies. A must read!! Black and white pictures add to its gothic, unauthorized feel. I really liked it

Must-have for compiler writers and processor designers.......2007-01-15
Allen and Kennedy (A&K) haven't written your first compiler book. There's nothing about syntax analysis, code generation, instruction scheduling, or intermediate representations. You already know all that part, or you won't get very far in this book. Once you have the basics down, A&K is an irreplaceable reference.
It centers heavily on Fortran - even today, a mainstay of scientific computing and an active area of language development. Today, just as 50 years ago, the language's straightforward structure makes detailed behavioral analysis relatively easy. That's especially true in handling the array computations that soak up so many dozens (as of this writing) of CPU-hours per second on todays largest machines. There's far too much to summarize here, but A&K cover a huge range of processor features, including caches, multiple ALUs, vector units, chaining, and more. C code gets some attention as well, much needed because of the cultural weirdness around array handling in C. In every case, the focus is on the real-world kernels that need the help and on explicit ways of identifying and manipulating those code structures. As a result, the authors disregard the unreal situations that sometimes arise, e.g. in
"while (--n) *a++ = *b++ * *c++;"
Yes, the arrays pointed to by a, b, and c can overlap. But the pointer a can also point to a, b, c, or n, somewhere in its range - and likewise for pointers b and c, or all three. There is essentially no limit to how bad this can get, e.g when n is an alias for a, b, or c. Yes these are rare situations and generally errors - but I've seen on-the-fly code generation in production environments, so even the A&K example isn't as bad as it gets. I admit these to be pathological cases, though, better suited to an 'Obfuscated C' contest than to a compiler textbook.
The real disappointment comes from the section on compilation for Verilog and VHDL, and that disappointment may be a matter of emphasis only. The authors focus heavily on the strangeness of four-valued bits, which exist in Verilog and VHDL simulation, but not in synthesis. I.e., not in what really matters to a deployed application. The real challenge lies in compilation of C or Fortran into gates, a topic that the authors barely skim. That, however, is still a field of research exotica. It should be mentioned in a general book on compilation, as it is here, but awaits a text of its own.
All you processor designers out there should read the title a little differently. You should read this as "Modern Architectures for Optimizing Compilers," but you probably worked that out for yourself. If you have the luxury to define your own memory structure, all that analysis of memory access will give you plenty of ideas for your next ASIP. It will certainly give you lots of ways to quantify the behavior of your target applications, so you'll know just how to get the most MIPS per Mgate, including hard limits on how much hardware paralellism can actually do you any good.
All architects of performance computing systems, hardware or software, need this book. Even application developers can learn better ways to cooperate with the compilers and tools that run their codes. It has my very highest recommendation.

Very readable, very specific.......2005-08-11
This book is a very thorough look through all the ways you can extract and use parallelism and data dependencies advantageously in an optimized compiler, depending on your target architecture. As one example, this book contains every imaginable way to deal with arrays and loops and the maddeningly complex data dependancies that can result from their various interminglings. The book is refreshingly easy to read and contains pseudo-code and step-by-step examples everywhere you'd want to see them.
An excellent book on loop based optimization.......2003-04-14
Randy Allen and Ken Kennedy are famous for their contributions
to compiler design theory. This book is a clearly written
discussion of the issues involving loop optimization and
dependence analysis. While this book also covers scalar
optimization issues, it is naturally complemented by Steven
S. Muchnick's excellent book "Advanced Compiler Design and
Implementation".
Randy Allen has spent many years implementing a variety of
compilers for supercomputers and hardware design languages.
While Ken Kennedy has published seminal theoretical work on
compiler optimization, he has also been involved in hands on
implementation as well. The experience of these two authors
results in a book which covers the huge body of knowledge in
compiler optimization and provides this knowledge in a
practical form that can be used by software engineers working
on compiler design.
For anyone working on modern compilers that require sophisticated
optimization features, this is an important reference work.
As with Muchnick's book, I have owned this since it was first
published. Rereading it reminds me of what a gem this work is.
Finally, everything in one place........2003-02-05
As a researcher in the field, this book was immediately useful to me. Nearly every source code transformation and optimization technique that I'm aware of is present in this book, which often saves sifting through stacks of papers or looking for an elusive reference. If you're looking for a book to teach you the basics of how compilers work, it certainly is not the appropriate place to begin, but if you already have one good book on that then this book will make an excellent companion to it. It was slightly annoying that the book comes with two loose pages, one errata list and another to tape over a page early in the book, but that's what you get with 1st editions. Overall it's very good and the errors are very minor typos as opposed to factual goofs.

This book is disappointing. It is not a book on theory. It's not a book on implementation. It names a technique, add a shallow description and quickly pass to the next topic. This is the kind of book I would use for learning a couple of words about compilers to drop it later in a conversation. If this is just what you want, then it's OK.
Good bits but somewhat boring.......2006-03-03
Yes, this is a good text about compilers, mainly about theory. It has good insights into the area of compiler design, and it approaches many topics with ideas that aren't common in compiler books. However, many of these topics are only touched upon, with no depth, requiring you to look for other references.
Other very good feature of the book is covering compilation of languages from other paradigms. Most compiler books are geared towards mainstream imperative and object-oriented languages. This one has chapters on compilation of functional, logic and parallel programming languages as well. There is ample evidence that declarative programming paradigms in general, and functional programming in particular, are becoming ever more important in the computing industry, and this trend should go on. After all, throughout all the history of computing, the trend was always to go for more abstraction and less implementation details. So it's important to take contact with other paradigms.
Ok, so it's good in general. But it is incredibly boring to read, and I say that as someone who's very into compilers and own a lot of books on the subject. As another reviewer said, the text is often convoluted and hard to read; the organization is mostly good, but it tends to have big sections and big chapters (some very big chapters). Add to that the completely uninspiring layout and typography -- really, it's a very dull and bland look -- and I had serious trouble to read some chapters. Besides, the pseudo-code notation is really bad; better typography for the pseudo-code sections could help too.
To sum it up, if you only have to buy a single book on compilers, I would recommend against this one. Try "Engineering a Compiler" by Cooper & Torczon or wait the new edition of the dragon book by Aho et al. This one is good maybe as a second book, to get complementary insights and new ideas to explore about compilers, especially if you are researching on them, or looking for new ideas to escape from the mainstream.
But if there's ever another edition of this book, I would seriously recommend the authors to rethink its layout and typography to make it more attractive, get help with improving the text and break some chapters and sections in more maneageable pieces. Then it would be a really great book about compilers.
One of the best computer science titles I own.......2006-01-26
I bought this book for a science fair project I was doing for school reasons. At first, the topic of compiler design scared me very much, and I had no idea what to do. The internet proved to have little material that was of much use, all the articles were scattered and mostly informal "hacks". That, or material that was way over my head with advanced calculus and other mathematics. When I bought this book, I did not anticipate it being so well suited to my current understanding. This book started at the very basics though, giving good explanations step by step. This was espically useful in the descriptions of parsers and code generators. This book was not too simple (or advanced) to be boring. This is not to say I read the book cover to cover, I left out about half of chapter 3 (which had a lot of fluffy material). The book is about half and half general compiler design and paradigm specific compilation. I skipped a lot of the extra material at the end (most of the logic and parallel compilation chapters). If you are looking for a book which holds a compiler within its pages and explains it line-by-line, this is not it. The book includes very little code (the self invented language they use is quite distasteful), but this does not matter very much. It takes a level of imagination to design a compiler anyway, but if you want a more implementation-oriented book perhaps you should look elsewhere. All in all, this book helped me a bunch, it's certainly worth a try.

This is a good compiler text, but my theory book winner is 'Engineering a compiler' by Cooper et al.
This is a very complete text. If you want to buy one theory book, buy this one because it simply covers all topics. This book also very nice written with a nice layout so a pleasure to read.
It starts very simple. Maybe some higher math would be a plus, but I think this book can also be read by novice people.
The real advantage of this book is that it also cover very advanced topics such as functional languages,. logic languages, parralelization, etc.

Overall, this is an excellent book for compilers. It covers a broad range of concepts. On think that I like is that the authors didn't take the very popular approach of "hey, let's write a small subset of Pascal". They actually only covers the concepts. So, this is not a beginner's book.
Algorithms are written in "english pseudo-code" and, altought I tought it'd be a good idea, it ended up being harder to read than the "usual pseudo-code" (like in the Dragon book).

One of the main goals of the book is to be a one-stop-shop for basic compiler design -- anyone with a solid understanding of Java should be able to use this book to create a compiler. Galles writes a very practical text -- all theoretical topics are introduced with intuitive justification and illustrated with copious examples. Galles is designed around the implementation of a compiler for the language {/em simpleJava}. SimpleJava is an imperative language with Java-style syntax that can be extended to a nearly complete version of Java. While the reader can obtain a thorough knowledge of the theory of compilation by merely reading the text, completing the integrated simple Java project will result in a much deeper understanding of the issues involved in compiler design. The project is quite flexible, and can be easily modified by adding or removing language features. For a quarter-long class, a basic version of simpleJava, without classes or arrays, can be used. A semester-long class can use the version of simpleJava described in Appendix A, with one or two of the extensions described in Chapter 11. A two quarter sequence could create a compiler for a nearly complete subset of java, using most of the extensions in Chapter 11. Instructors using this book in a class may wish assign a slightly different subset of simple Java each time that they teach the class, to keep the material fresh.
