      Book Description

      Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of America's entry into World War II, this volume chronicles the careers of eight U.S.A. Zone commentators who worked for Nazi propagandist Josef Goebbels. Drawing upon a variety of documentary sources--letters written by the subjects to family, friends, and colleagues; treason trial transcripts; the contents of the BBC's wartime monitoring service; and FBI case files on the broadcasters--the author explores each broadcaster's political and personal motivations, and the influence of their broadcasts.

          Book Description

          From power plants to sugar refining, model predictive control (MPC) schemes have established themselves as the preferred control strategies for a wide variety of processes.

          The second edition of Model Predictive Control provides a thorough introduction to theoretical and practical aspects of the most commonly used MPC strategies. It bridges the gap between the powerful but often abstract techniques of control researchers and the more empirical approach of practitioners. Model Predictive Control demonstrates that a powerful technique does not always require complex control algorithms.

          The text features material on the following subjects:

          • general MPC elements and algorithms;

          • commercial MPC schemes;

          • generalized predictive control

          • multivariable, robust, constrained nonlinear and hybrid MPC;

          • fast methods for MPC implementation;

          • applications.

          All of the material is thoroughly updated for the second edition with the chapters on nonlinear MPC, MPC and hybrid systems and MPC implementation being entirely new. Many new exercises and examples have also have also been added throughout and MATLAB ® programs to aid in their solution can be downloaded from the authors' website. The text is an excellent aid for graduate and advanced undergraduate students and will also be of use to researchers and industrial practitioners wishing to keep abreast of a fast-moving field.

          Book Description

          Constraint satisfaction is a simple but powerful tool. Constraints identify the impossible and reduce the realm of possibilities to effectively focus on the possible, allowing for a natural declarative formulation of what must be satisfied, without expressing how. The field of constraint reasoning has matured over the last three decades with contributions from a diverse community of researchers in artificial intelligence, databases and programming languages, operations research, management science, and applied mathematics. Today, constraint problems are used to model cognitive tasks in vision, language comprehension, default reasoning, diagnosis, scheduling, temporal and spatial reasoning.

          In Constraint Processing, Rina Dechter, synthesizes these contributions, along with her own significant work, to provide the first comprehensive examination of the theory that underlies constraint processing algorithms. Throughout, she focuses on fundamental tools and principles, emphasizing the representation and analysis of algorithms.

          ·Examines the basic practical aspects of each topic and then tackles more advanced issues, including current research challenges
          ·Builds the reader's understanding with definitions, examples, theory, algorithms and complexity analysis
          ·Synthesizes three decades of researchers work on constraint processing in AI, databases and programming languages, operations research, management science, and applied mathematics

          5 out of 5 stars A complete up-to-date reference.......2005-01-05

          This book includes the basics of constraint satisfaction that should appear in a textbook while in the same time presenting in a unifying manner important research results that constitute the state-of-the-art in the field. Diverse lines of research like tractable languages, constraint optimization, temporal CSPs etc are gathered in a single reference. The material is presented along with comprehensive examples. In my opinion this is an essential reference.

          5 out of 5 stars a comprehensive handbook on CSPs.......2004-05-12

          This is the only book I found that contains almost all important results in the field. I have to refer to it from time to time.

          5 out of 5 stars Chapeau bas!.......2004-04-03

          This book covers both introductory and advanced material. It is a
          solid resource for introducing students to the basic mechanisms of
          Constraint Processing and for training the future generation of
          researchers in the field. It is also an invaluable tool for
          perfecting the knowledge of the seasoned researcher in topics beyond
          his/her particular expertise.

          Its coverage of the relationship between relational algebra and
          Constraint Satisfaction is unique and bound to inspire new synergies
          between Databases and Constraint Processing. The depth and rigor
          at which advanced topics are addressed (e.g., advanced consistency
          methods, tree decomposition techniques, and temporal reasoning
          networks) are a remarkable achievement, possible only given the wealth
          and significance of the author's own contributions to the field.

          This is one of those rare books you will enjoy reading over and over
          again, every time acquiring new knowledge.

          5 out of 5 stars Exact Constraint: Machine Design Using Kinematic Processing.......2007-06-24

          This book contains a collection of rules and techniques pertaining to kinematic aspects of machine design. The comprehensive treatment allows you to explore the venerable but somewhat obscure principles of kinematic design (widely practiced in the design of precision instruments for well over 100 years).

          You get a unique and powerful set of rules and techniques to facilitate the design of any machine-of every type and size. A central technique is constraint pattern analysis, which enables you to visualize the constraints and degrees of freedom of mechanical connection as patterns of lines in space. Understanding these principles, collectively called exact constraint design principles, can lead you to unobvious solutions to design problems, as well as designing for lower cost and higher performance.

          The book is supplemented with many hardware examples, which allow you to: acquire a greatly enhanced understanding of how machines work, improve your ability to create innovative machines, and maximize your ability to analyze and understand complex machinery.

            Book Description

            Scheduling, vehicle routing and timetabling are all examples of constraint problems, and methods to solve them rely on the idea of constraint propagation and search. This book meets the need for a modern, multidisciplinary introduction to the field that covers foundations and applications. Written by Krzysztof Apt, an authority on the subject, it will be welcomed by graduate students and professionals. With the insertion of constraint techniques into programming environments, new developments have accelerated the solution process. Constraint programming combines ideas from artificial intelligence, programming languages, databases, and operational research.

            Download Description

            Constraints are everywhere: most computational problems can be described in terms of restrictions imposed on the set of possible solutions, and constraint programming is a problem-solving technique that works by incorporating those restrictions in a programming environment. It draws on methods from combinatorial optimization and artificial intelligence, and has been successfully applied in a number of fields from scheduling, computational biology, finance, electrical engineering and operations research through to numerical analysis. This textbook for upper-division students provides a thorough and structured account of the main aspects of constraint programming. The author provides many worked examples that illustrate the usefulness and versatility of this approach to programming, as well as many exercises throughout the book that illustrate techniques, test skills and extend the text. Pointers to current research, extensive historical and bibliographic notes, and a comprehensive list of references will also be valuable to professionals in computer science and artificial intelligence.

              Book Description

              This book is concerned with the machine-based generation of natural language text and presents a formal analysis of problems that in the main have previously only been approached descriptively. In the process of producing discourse, speakers and writers must decide what it is they want to say and how to present it effectively. Kathleen McKeown's main concern is to identify and formalize principles of discourse so that they can be used in a computational process. The text generation theory she describes relies on principles drawn from both linguistics and computer science. It shows that by using an organizational framework for the text (a schema) and by identifying focus of attention as the text is produced, the system can produce a coherent, well-organized text. This theory has been embodied in a computer program, TEXT, which, given a question, can produce a paragraph length response. TEXT is part of a natural language database system and provides answers to general questions about the database, such as requests for definitions or queries about the kind of information available in the database. An appendix to the book provides examples of the TEXT system in operation.

                      Book Description

                      This state-of-the-art survey comprises a selection of the material presented at the International Dagstuhl Seminar on Annotating, Extracting and Reasoning about Time and Events, held in Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in April 2005.

                      The seminar centered around an emerging de facto standard for time and event annotation: TimeML. The 9 papers included in the book constitute the thoroughly cross-reviewed and revised versions of selected summaries and findings presented and discussed at the seminar.

                      The papers feature current research and discuss open problems concerning annotation, temporal reasoning, and event identification. The main concern is with the determination of the effectivity of the TimeML language for consistent annotation, the determination of the usefulness of such annotations for further processing, and the question as to which modifications should be applied to the standard to improve its convenience in applications such as question-answering and information retrieval.
