Berlin Calling: American Broadcasters in Service to the Third Reich
John Carver Edwards Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0275939057 |
Book Description
Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of America's entry into World War II, this volume chronicles the careers of eight U.S.A. Zone commentators who worked for Nazi propagandist Josef Goebbels. Drawing upon a variety of documentary sources--letters written by the subjects to family, friends, and colleagues; treason trial transcripts; the contents of the BBC's wartime monitoring service; and FBI case files on the broadcasters--the author explores each broadcaster's political and personal motivations, and the influence of their broadcasts.

Book Description
From power plants to sugar refining, model predictive control (MPC) schemes have established themselves as the preferred control strategies for a wide variety of processes.
The second edition of Model Predictive Control provides a thorough introduction to theoretical and practical aspects of the most commonly used MPC strategies. It bridges the gap between the powerful but often abstract techniques of control researchers and the more empirical approach of practitioners. Model Predictive Control demonstrates that a powerful technique does not always require complex control algorithms.
The text features material on the following subjects:
• general MPC elements and algorithms;
• commercial MPC schemes;
• generalized predictive control
• multivariable, robust, constrained nonlinear and hybrid MPC;
• fast methods for MPC implementation;
• applications.
All of the material is thoroughly updated for the second edition with the chapters on nonlinear MPC, MPC and hybrid systems and MPC implementation being entirely new. Many new exercises and examples have also have also been added throughout and MATLAB ® programs to aid in their solution can be downloaded from the authors' website. The text is an excellent aid for graduate and advanced undergraduate students and will also be of use to researchers and industrial practitioners wishing to keep abreast of a fast-moving field.

Constraint Processing (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Artificial Intelligence)
Rina Dechter Manufacturer: Morgan Kaufmann ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1558608907 |
Book Description
Constraint satisfaction is a simple but powerful tool. Constraints identify the impossible and reduce the realm of possibilities to effectively focus on the possible, allowing for a natural declarative formulation of what must be satisfied, without expressing how. The field of constraint reasoning has matured over the last three decades with contributions from a diverse community of researchers in artificial intelligence, databases and programming languages, operations research, management science, and applied mathematics. Today, constraint problems are used to model cognitive tasks in vision, language comprehension, default reasoning, diagnosis, scheduling, temporal and spatial reasoning.Customer Reviews:

Its coverage of the relationship between relational algebra and
Constraint Satisfaction is unique and bound to inspire new synergies
between Databases and Constraint Processing. The depth and rigor
at which advanced topics are addressed (e.g., advanced consistency
methods, tree decomposition techniques, and temporal reasoning
networks) are a remarkable achievement, possible only given the wealth
and significance of the author's own contributions to the field.
This is one of those rare books you will enjoy reading over and over
again, every time acquiring new knowledge.

Re-Engineering the Manufacturing System: Applying the Theory of Constraints, Second Edition, (Manufacturing Engineering and Materials Processing)
Robert E. Stein Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0824742656 |
Book Description
An information systems trailblazer in the domains of decision support and factory and supply chain synchronization, the Second Edition of Re-Engineering the Manufacturing System stays true to its title, once again bestowing uniquely straightforward instructions for designing, installing, and operating manufacturing information systems. This updated and expanded source takes care to clarify the often blurred concepts of synchronization and optimization, and offers implementation advice from four discrete angles to yield better bottom-line results. It shows how to exploit an information system, rolling ERP system implementation into the TOC framework to promote profit materialization.

Principles of Constraint Programming
Krzysztof Apt Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521825830 |
Book Description
Scheduling, vehicle routing and timetabling are all examples of constraint problems, and methods to solve them rely on the idea of constraint propagation and search. This book meets the need for a modern, multidisciplinary introduction to the field that covers foundations and applications. Written by Krzysztof Apt, an authority on the subject, it will be welcomed by graduate students and professionals. With the insertion of constraint techniques into programming environments, new developments have accelerated the solution process. Constraint programming combines ideas from artificial intelligence, programming languages, databases, and operational research.Download Description
Constraints are everywhere: most computational problems can be described in terms of restrictions imposed on the set of possible solutions, and constraint programming is a problem-solving technique that works by incorporating those restrictions in a programming environment. It draws on methods from combinatorial optimization and artificial intelligence, and has been successfully applied in a number of fields from scheduling, computational biology, finance, electrical engineering and operations research through to numerical analysis. This textbook for upper-division students provides a thorough and structured account of the main aspects of constraint programming. The author provides many worked examples that illustrate the usefulness and versatility of this approach to programming, as well as many exercises throughout the book that illustrate techniques, test skills and extend the text. Pointers to current research, extensive historical and bibliographic notes, and a comprehensive list of references will also be valuable to professionals in computer science and artificial intelligence.

Text Generation: Using Discourse Strategies and Focus Constraints to Generate Natural Language Text (Studies in Natural Language Processing)
Kathleen R. McKeown Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521438020 |
Book Description
This book is concerned with the machine-based generation of natural language text and presents a formal analysis of problems that in the main have previously only been approached descriptively. In the process of producing discourse, speakers and writers must decide what it is they want to say and how to present it effectively. Kathleen McKeown's main concern is to identify and formalize principles of discourse so that they can be used in a computational process. The text generation theory she describes relies on principles drawn from both linguistics and computer science. It shows that by using an organizational framework for the text (a schema) and by identifying focus of attention as the text is produced, the system can produce a coherent, well-organized text. This theory has been embodied in a computer program, TEXT, which, given a question, can produce a paragraph length response. TEXT is part of a natural language database system and provides answers to general questions about the database, such as requests for definitions or queries about the kind of information available in the database. An appendix to the book provides examples of the TEXT system in operation.

Annotating, Extracting and Reasoning about Time and Events: International Seminar, Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, April 20-15, 2005, Revised Papers (Lecture Notes in Computer Science)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 3540759883 |
Book Description
This state-of-the-art survey comprises a selection of the material presented at the International Dagstuhl Seminar on Annotating, Extracting and Reasoning about Time and Events, held in Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in April 2005.
The seminar centered around an emerging de facto standard for time and event annotation: TimeML. The 9 papers included in the book constitute the thoroughly cross-reviewed and revised versions of selected summaries and findings presented and discussed at the seminar.
The papers feature current research and discuss open problems concerning annotation, temporal reasoning, and event identification. The main concern is with the determination of the effectivity of the TimeML language for consistent annotation, the determination of the usefulness of such annotations for further processing, and the question as to which modifications should be applied to the standard to improve its convenience in applications such as question-answering and information retrieval.
