Book Description

Xena: Warrior Princess chronicles the life and death (and afterlife) adventures of the fierce and fearless Xena as she travels through ancient imaginary lands. Leaping onto our screens in 1995 with the now-familiar battle-cry "Yi-Yi-Yi-Yi-Yi!", the show ran for six series, and its blend of drama, humour, hard-hitting (literally!) action and a knowing modern-day sensibility helped it to achieve mainstream cultdom.

Xena: Warrior Princess: The Complete Illustrated Companion is the only comprehensive, fully-authorised guide to all six series of the groundbreaking action-adventure show, and contains a complete episode guide, plus character and behind-the-scenes information, and details of Xena fandom, all illustrated with over 150 photos, including an 8-page colour section.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, but could have been more extensive.......2007-05-19

Being that I own the Xena guide written by Robert Weisbrot,I wasn't sure what to expect from this one. What I got was a book that was not as extensive as it should have been. The individual episode summaries should have been more detailed than they were. If Weisbrot had written this one,no doubt they would have been. However,I did enjoy reading about the final four seasons, and for that I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Depends on how picky you are..........2003-08-10

It's been two years since the series came to a close and ended it's shooting, and we finally have a complete illustrated companion to go along with it all.
With all the time we spent anticipating this book, I believe that it left a bit to be desired. The author of the book either did not do his or her homework very well or did not pay too much attention to detail when the episode guide was written. Each episode review was only three or four lines long, and there were a few mistakes on the episodes scattered throughout. IE-In One Against an Army, Gabrielle was shot by an arrow BEFORE Xena took refuge in the armory. This was actually a rather large point in the plot of the story, but the book states that Xena went to the armory and then Gabrielle was shot. For the episode "Many Happy Returns" the book explains that Xena and Gabrielle enlisted Aphrodite's help to help Genia "enjoy worldly pleasures." Weren't they trying to teach her to live her own life? You may like the episode guide better than I did if you aren't so picky, but I definitely recommend online fan written episode guides over the one in this book. They are usually more in depth and more accurate.
The rest of the book was alright. It has the genesis of Xena, a production history, an episode guide (both for the series and when Xena would guest star on Hercules), character reviews, a behind the scenes look at costumes, makeup, stunts and special effects, Xena's journeys across the globe, a Greek Mythology encyclopedia to help you keep the characters straight, and even a chapter just for the fans of the show. I've been a very avid Xena fan and collector since Xena was first on Hercules in 1994, and if you're like me then you've seen and read all of this before (not to mention having already known all of the information from having memorized every detail of every episode of the show *big grin*). It's nice to have all this in one book, but it's not anything new or exciting to those that have been fans all along. BUT it is one of those things that every xenite should have. I recommend it to all Xena fans, but with the warning of not to have your expectations set too high and the advice that almost everything (if not everything) from this book can be found online.

4 out of 5 stars Shadow Warrior The Complete Survival Guide.......2000-03-30

The book delivers. I don't own the book because it is a great read but because it provides solutions at essential times of need. An earlier one star review makes it out to be a bad novel. The book was wholly adequate and kudos on top, a four star. No problem trying to find secret places but then, again, most of my time was spent in the game itself. When I needed help the Survival Guide came through with flying colors. The description of the book by the authors is accurate. No complaints here and the book was a life saver when trying to find the needed solutions to progress though the rest of the game. Definately recommended for the topic it covers.

1 out of 5 stars This book is badly written with bad photography........1999-05-09

A warning to players of 3D realm's latest hit "Shadow Warrior" you are better off getting cheat codes of a web site or a FAQ off a fan site because this book provides little if any in depths help. Many of the references are inaccurate. Plus the screen shot look like they were taken by a blind man. All in all, a waste of your well earned 13 bucks. Take it from me, this is not worth half of what it costs. For example, in area one, there are six secrets in which the book does not explain how to reach any in detail. Just a blant description of where it is, in which any novice would not have the slightest clue what is being talked about. I have also tried following there instructions step by step and ended up in a meaningless room instead of finding the train station. It's huge flaws like this that diminish this strategy guide from other great ones, such as Duke Nukem 3D and Doom. They have no referance to any newer versions of Shadow Warrior or any installation help. Furthermore they offer no help at all with creating or using user creating maps. With all this in mind the 13 dollars is really not worth it at all. Find another FAQ or take it up with Gamewinners.Com because the bottom line is that this book does not cut it. Need Help with Shadow Warrior, look for the unofficial or unauthorized versions. They may actually provide help you need instead of badly written help tips and such. Final review: Thumbs down! Way down to a book that may have taken an hour to write and another hour to cut and paste art class pictures. This book did not cut it...take my word for it...or dont...and waste your money.

Simply put, a firewall is a way to restrict access between the Internet and your company's internal network. It enables you to get out to the Net while keeping unauthorized people from breaking into your systems. This is a solid, definitive text for building Internet firewalls that every system administrator who is connecting to the Net should own. Written in down-to-earth yet detailed style, you're guided through the entire process of designing, building and maintaining firewalls. The preface gives the best reason for using this book to build firewalls: "In any society, a small percentage of people are malicious." Indeed.

      Book Description

More than a million systems are now connected to the Internet, and something like 15 million people in 100 countries on all seven continents use Internet services. More than 100 million email messages are exchanged each day, along with countless files, documents, and audio and video images.

Everyone is jumping on the Internet bandwagon. Once a haven for academicians and scientists, the Net is now reaching large and small businesses, government at all levels, school children, and senior citizens. The commercial world is rushing headlong into doing business on the Internet, barely pausing while technologies and policies catch up with their desire to go online. But, too few of the seekers after Internet wisdom and riches consider whether their businesses will be safe on the Net.

What kinds of security risks are posed by the Internet? Some risks have been around since the early days of networking -- password attacks (guessing them or cracking them via password dictionaries and cracking programs), denial of service, and exploiting known security holes. Some risks are newer and even more dangerous -- packet sniffers, IP (Internet Protocol) forgery, and various types of hijacking attacks.

Firewalls are a very effective way to protect your system from these Internet security threats. Firewalls in computer networks keep damage on one part of the network (e.g., eavesdropping, a worm program, file damage) from spreading to the rest of the network. Without firewalls, network security problems can rage out of control, dragging more and more systems down.

What is a firewall? It's a hardware and/or software solution that restricts access from your internal network to the Internet -- and vice versa. A firewall may also be used to separate two or more parts of your local network (for example, protecting finance from R&D). The firewall is installed at the perimeter of the network, ordinarily where it connects to the Internet. You can think of a firewall as a checkpoint; all traffic, incoming and outgoing, is stopped at this point. Because it is, the firewall can make sure that it is acceptable. "Acceptable" means that whatever is passing through -- email, file transfers, remote logins, NFS mounts, etc. -- conforms to the security policy of the site.

Building Internet Firewalls is a practical guide to building firewalls on the Internet. If your site is connected to the Internet, or if you're considering getting connected, you need this book. It describes a variety of firewall approaches and architectures and discusses how you can build packet filtering and proxying solutions at your site. It also contains a full discussion of how to configure Internet services (e.g., FTP, SMTP, Telnet) to work with a firewall. The book also includes a complete list of resources, including the location of many publicly available firewall construction tools.

The book is divided into four parts:

Part I discusses Internet threats, the benefits of firewalls, overall security strategies, and a summary of Internet services and their security risks.

Part II describes possible firewall designs and general terms and concepts, how to protect the bastion host in your firewall configuration, how to build proxying and packet filtering firewalls, and how to configure Internet services to operate with a firewall.

Part III describes how to maintain a firewall, develop a security policy, and respond to a security incident.

Part IV contains appendices consisting of a resource summary, a directory of how to find firewall toolkits and other security-related tools, and a detailed summary providing TCP/IP background information.

5 out of 5 stars Classic book at creating your own Firewall!.......2006-02-26

O'Reilly's "Building Internet Firewalls-2nd Edition" by Zwicky is a classic book that fully describes how to build and integrate various types of firewalls into any type of networking infrastructure. The book is a beast (at over 800 pages) and covers the wide range of security concerns when implementing firewalls. Please note, this book does not cover firewalls that are platforms (so don't expect to learn how to admin a PIX or Juniper/NetScreen firewall), nor does it discuss firewalls such as CheckPoint. What this book does discuss (and in depth), is how to build your own firewall, from scratch using the O/S of your choice, and how to harden the host.

The book begins with a general introduction to TCP/IP and networking. Starting with Chapter 5 (about 100 pages into the book), the book really comes into it's own. The book's next few chapters focus on the different types of firewalls architectures (packet filters, proxy systems, bastion hosts (Unix, Linux and Windows)).

The third section of the book focuses on Internet services - RPC, TLS & SSL, WWW, FTP & TFTP, Sendmail, DNS, IRC, etc... All the major protocols are covered. I believe that this book discusses some of the fundamental TCP/IP protocols, from a security perspective, better than any other book on the market. For example, on page 352, is a detailed discussion on RPC and portmappers.

I have always enjoyed "Building Internet Firewalls" and still periodically reference it to help secure firewalls/hosts. This book should be placed various close to you on your IP Security bookshelf.

I give this book 5 pings out of 5:
      !!!!!

4 out of 5 stars The best firewall book around, but lacking re: policy design.......2005-07-01

_Building Internet Firewalls_ is a great reference if you are looking for physical configuration recommendations (how to connect stuff) or protocol packet filtering characteristics (lots of great detail there), but it does not describe firewall policy design or management in any detail (and I'm not aware of a firewall book that does). This could use a few more "real world" examples of filter policies (not just physical architecture), perhaps even a chapter dedicated to each of a home network, a small-to-medium-size business (with perhaps a more complicated and rigorous policy), and a large enterprise (with multiple firewalls and a complex policy).

5 out of 5 stars Firewall Book Review.......2005-02-23

I think this is one of the best firewall books on the market. It is written in language that is easy to understand and has a lot of nice diagrams.

3 out of 5 stars Okay for discussing general ideas, but not much real world.......2003-05-11

Okay for discussing general ideas, but not much real world use. There's not a lot to be had from this book. They cover too much and discuss too much generalized topics and never really touch on any real-world working, intelligent firewall fules and uses. Just too much generalized fluff. You'll get more from a 'man page' on iptables and be able to put it to use, at least, compared to this. It is interesting, but there's too much generalization and fluff and not much someone can *use* from it.

5 out of 5 stars very good book for networkers to understand security.......2003-04-05

bought this book after I brought up my own internet facing servers. coming from a networking background, the internet was an open space for me not until I read this book. This book tells you what kinds of security threats are out there, why and how you can protect your sites while still running all the services.
very interesting and humorous too. Thanks.

Building Linux and OpenBSD Firewalls tackles considerably more than its title implies. For one thing, it's an introductory Internet security text that explains some of the methods attackers employ and how security strategies (including firewalls) can help thwart them.

Some of this coverage is very basic indeed ("What's an IP address?" and "What's a good Password" are two elementary sidebars), but that's in keeping with this series, which is intended for managers and others somewhat removed from detail work as well as for technicians. Still, the differences between OpenBSD and Linux boil down to a couple of key features, and you'll find yourself halfway through this book before you get to any how-to material on configuring a firewall. The configuration information is easy to follow: the authors explain which options to choose in the operating systems' respective installation routines and outline some supplementary procedures to follow afterward.

This book deserves kudos for treating OpenBSD with the same respect most books lavish over the trendier Linux, and the odds are good you'll learn a lot about it. You'll find the general security material valuable as well, particularly if you're new to the security game and need a primer on firewalls, demilitarized zones (DMZs), and the vulnerabilities of particular protocols and services. Still, this isn't the best practical guide around. Look at Linux Firewalls for detailed information on configuring IP chains under Linux, Maximum Linux Security for an all-purpose take on that system's security characteristics, and Firewalls and Internet Security: Repelling the Wily Hacker for further comprehensive security coverage. --David Wall

Topics covered: Internet security background, fundamentals of firewall design and security policy, the relative merits of OpenBSD and Linux, and the configuration of bare-metal machines as firewalls under both operating systems. The authors use Red Hat Linux 6 and OpenBSD 2.5.

5 out of 5 stars Good content, cool writing style.......2002-09-04

This is a great book for people who already know that they want to deploy a free open source firewall solution to secure their network. While somewhat dated (e.g. Linux: ipchains and not iptables, OpenBSD: ipf and not pf), the book gives detailed and comprehensive directions for buidling a firewall platform, deploying a firewall and event sheds some light on the security policy development and maintainance such as securing various network services.

The books covers basic security, continues on to choosing the "right OS" (providing an enlightening discussion on Linux vs OpenBSD) and getting the right hardware for the job, and then dives right into building stuff, complete with commands and "cut-and-paste" firewalls rules.

The last part introduces the reader to the basics of intrusion detection and system monitoring, both valuable parts of any firewall setup.

One of the great features of the book is the author's humorous style. I rolled on the floor laughing about "naked penguins" and "hairy sysadmins".

Overall, get the book if you are planning to build the open source firewall solution or even if you believe that security books can be fun to read.

Anton Chuvakin, Ph.D., GCIA ... is a Senior Security Analyst with a major information security company.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer!.......2002-05-07

This book is VERY well written. It was one of the very best technical books I have ever read. Some of the info is a little dated, but the topics discussed are GREAT history. I personally get tired of security writers dismissing older exploits as they are still being used today. In addition, the majority of the first half of the book is devoted to security background and explanation of the types of major exploits.
This was the first tech book that I have ever read cover to cover. It was that interesting. The authors had a very conversational style that keeps you hooked and entertained.

      I HIGHLY recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Good intro book on firewalls and even networking in general........2002-02-02

This book is awesome. It assumes no prior networking experience and walks you through networking basics as well as basic security issues such as Denial of Service, spoofing, etc. Chapters with complete step-by-step installation instructions for both Linux and OpenBSD Unix are included, so it's very easy for any beginner to build a firewall for their home (or office) network.
Tell people that you've personally built your own firewall using OpenBSD and you'll be guaranteed an approving nod from even the cockiest alpha geek!

1 out of 5 stars An Eddy In The Technological River.......2001-11-16

This book is useless to anyone able to use an internet browser. I love the style, but it disguises a useless waste of paper. Two years ago, this would have been a marvelous book. Now you'd be better off flushing your dollars down the tube. If you connect to the internet via DSL, this book won't help. If you connect via a dial-up and want the latest firewall configuration, this book won't help. If you want to know about primitive hacker attacks or where to buy outdated OS CDs, software available in newer versions on the web, this is the book for you. (The book's website, touted on the backcover, in the book, and on the publisher's website, is a stupid mess. It does not contain the information the book says it contains and consists largely of empty pages linked together. Polite questions and requests to get it together go unanswered. Give it a try, and you'll see what I mean.

      2 out of 5 stars Falling Behind.......2001-10-03

As an funny and well-written introduction to firewalls and why they are necessary, as well as a paen to OpenBSD, this book is excellent. As a guide to building one's own using OpenBSD, there are better methods and more up to date instructions on the web. The book's companion website is a mess and has been under construction for months.

Two things are particularly out of date. First, it seems that more effective OpenBSD firewalls are configured as "bridges." This configuration is not mentioned in the book. Second, the book discusses a version of OpenBSD that is several generations old, one that was apparently arranged differently on the distribution CD. Moreover, the key piece of OpenBSD for constructing a firewall, according to instructions in the book, ipf, is apparently going to be removed from future distributions because of licensing problems. (I believe it has already been removed from the lastest OpenBSD distributions on the OpenBSD website but may remain on the 2.9 distribution CD.) Figuring out how to install and configure the latest version of ipfilter will send you on one of those time-consuming webquests. There's no help in the book,

If the website were functional and updated the book, the book's other content (primarily background but useful background), might make this book worthwhile. As things stand now, it is better avoided. (Try a Yahoo! search instead.)

      Book Description

This is the only book available on building network DMZs, which are the cornerstone of any good enterprise security configuration. It covers market-leading products from Microsoft, Cisco, and Check Point.

One of the most complicated areas of network technology is designing, planning, implementing, and constantly maintaining a demilitarized zone (DMZ) segment. This book is divided into four logical parts. First the reader will learn the concepts and major design principles of all DMZs. Next the reader will learn how to configure the actual hardware that makes up DMZs for both newly constructed and existing networks. Next, the reader will learn how to securely populate the DMZs with systems and services. The last part of the book deals with troubleshooting, maintaining, testing, and implementing security on the DMZ.

2 out of 5 stars large, but not well executed.......2006-11-01

i used to install firewalls as a consultant, and i spent a lot of time looking at varius configurations. in the intervening years, i've had the chance to keep current and examine a number of firewall devices for new features, configurations, and also look at some of the changes new technologies (ie WiFi) have brought. all in all, i think i was was pretty well prepared to look at "Designing and Building Enterprise Dmzs" from the angle of someone who's a moderate level firewall user.

i think it's fair to say that i'm disappointed in this new volume from Syngress, for numerous reasons. but before i get to the nits and complaints, i'll start with what i did like.

the book is large, nearly 700 pages of text covering a number of major commercial firewall products, such as checkpoint, nokia, microsoft, cisco, juniper netscreen, and sun. i like th fact that the authors were ambitious (more on that later), you do wind up with a lot of information in a single volume. if you've read firewalls books before, like the canon from oreilly, then you know a lot about firewalls, but you've probably understood that things are changing. new technologies require new solutions, and new offerings have hit the market. firewalls are now more abundant, more feature filled, and this book does a good job of tackling these products with, often, a good attempt at key coverage.

what i also like about this book is that it's not only about technologies, it's about management and about network layouts. this book doesn't pretend that there's one network, but instead shows how various approaches for various needs can be applied. the authors try to show you how each product's features can support those requirements, and what technologies can be used to guard access or secure hosts in a DMZ. this isn't just a book about firewalls and products.

ok, on to the complaints. you know a book is bad when you spot errors such as a bad CIDR specification for RFC 1918 address space (table 1.4), lots of port lists, and a brief primer on "servers" an services buried deep in a chapter on security cisco routers (chapter 11, page 540). i suspect the last point is due to the numerous authors in the book and a failure to find a cohesive structure, but that's a major failing of the book. it doesn't find a consistent voice and doesn't provide consistent coverage of the topics.

some chapters spend more time reviewing marketing materials for products (ie the chapter on juniper netscreen devices, chapter 9) than on getting down to a real feature comparison. this is a real failure of this book. the authors have a chance to cover all major commercial firewalls out there in a clear and unified way, taking an approach that can unify solutions across all, and haven't done so. you wind up with inconsistent coverage and have difficulty in finding the same information in any of the chapters. it's very tough to have multiple authors writing a book, but the editors should have budgeted time to provide a cohesive voice or enforced coverage standards. the reader would have benefitted dramatically for that.

as is often the case with syngress books, the screenshots are too often poorly done. again, this seems to be a function of the chapter and, i'm presuming, the author (based on their stated strengths in the intro to the book). the chapters using web-based and UNIX tools are often filled with poor quality, full screen screenshots that are illegible due to the scaling. the chapters on windows-based tools often have only a small window as a screenshot, enabling better legibility. care needs to be taken for these sorts of things.

the quality of the writing is ok, but it could be better overall. again, a function of the authors, i think, and not a strong editing job. often the writing is not very clear or well organized, and overall the book suffers for it. there's some good info in here, but it's buried under unclear and poorly organized text.

you should look over this book carefully if you're thinking about buying it. this will probably target people in large, heterogeneous environments or people studying for exams. i doubt someone will have all of these technologies in their production environment. however, if you want to see a lot of different firewalls compared, this is worth looking at, but be cautious about buying it.
