5 out of 5 stars A must read for all serious 2/1 bidders.......2003-10-29

Max Hardy's book is considered, by most bridge teachers and experts, to be the bible for the 2/1 game force bidding method. It comprehensively covers every aspect of an entire bidding system encompassing 2/1 GF, 1NT forcing and all of the supporting conventions necessary to make up a bidding system to address all hand possibilities. Quite frankly, it isn't easy to read, because each paragraph contains a nugget of knowledge which must be carefully digested by the reader. But, it's a must read for anyone who wants to keep up to date on the most exciting innovations in bridge bidding over the last decade. After having read through the entire book twice, I keep my copy at my bedside, and fall asleep reading a randomly selected section. Each time, I discover another nuance which enhances my bridge bidding repertoire.

Today's most popular bidding style thoroughly explained.

4 out of 5 stars A sophisticated book for relatively advanced players.......2001-08-31

Being unsatisfied with my level of understanding of the two over one bidding system (after a friend taught the basics to me), I read this book, which everyone told me was the authority on the subject. I found in this book a fairly complete description of a system a level or two more sophisticated than what I had previously played. Max Hardy tries to convey a great deal of information to the reader, so the text is somewhat dense and must be read slowly and carefully. Furtheremore, despite its length, the book doesn't always cover certain situations in as much depth as I would like. On a possibly related note, Max Hardy assumes that the reader has a good knowledge of standard bidding. Hence, my earlier disappointment at the lack of depth in some cases may reflect more my own lack of knowledge than any deficiency on Max Hardy's part (this is the first book I have read describing an entire bidding system).

In short, if you're interested in learning two over one, you really should read this book. Eventually. If you're a fairly inexperienced player, first finish learning standard bidding and then be prepared for a slow but informative read.

3 out of 5 stars Critique of 2/1gf by Max Hardy.......2001-07-31

No question, Max sure knows his 2/1gf system...wish I could say the same for me after wading through it...I'm sure if you wanted to spend many hours sifting his text, you'd be a super 2/1 player, but in my estimation, the book needs two things: a better format, and example bids with each paragraph...I know that would lengthen book, but you have to IMAGINE the bidding from each little paragraph to get the sense of what he's saying. From his book, I conclude that 2/1 is too complex for me...too much memory work involved. Too bad, many people in Zone Bridge Club on the internet think highly of the system. Of course, I'm no expert...which is why I selected Max's book...to become one.

4 out of 5 stars Complete, exhaustive but verbore.......2000-12-17

I believe I am a fair bridge player. Wished to learn a more advanced system than 5 card majors, which I currently play. English is not my mother language but am used to it as I work in an international environment. Found the book content well structured and written but concise. It takes too much effort and concentration to go thru the descriptions of the biddings. It lacks templates and tables that would facilitate the visual memorization of the steps. E.G: most of the hand points required by a bidding are represented in letters rather than in numbers. So are the suits declared during the auction rather than using symbols. Would recommend a new edition with more tables and less words which shall not necessarily imply... less pages and therefore lower price!

5 out of 5 stars Good coverage of 2/1, gives an integrated system.......2005-10-14

Mike Lawrence's version of 2/1 is a bit different from Max Hardys. The book explains the differences and why the choices were made. Whats especially nice is the author discusses both views on a topic, rather than just presenting his choice.

Just a few of the major differences -
a) This version uses Strong Jump Shifts, but not the kind you think, there are 3 types and they dont all promise 19 points like the old ones.
b) 1 Diamond - 2 Clubs is forcing to 2NT or 3 of a minor rather than game a la Hardy
c) 2/1 is 95% game forcing, but may end up in 4 of a minor if 3NT is unsuitable
d) 1 Heart - 2 Clubs - 2 Hearts doesn't show 6 Hearts. It shows 5 with no other rebid

The justification for these choices is explained.

2/1 is more complex than Standard American. There are many bids with fairly precise meanings and you nee to know them if you are to use the system to its full effectiveness. The book discusses the rules and then elaborates on them with lots of bidding problems (given the hands and the auction). Compared to the Hardy book this gives a fuller more integrated system.

Example:
What is the difference bewteen 1 Spade - 2 Spades and 1 Spade - 1NT - 2 Clubs - 2 Spades?
The former is showing a better hand. The later can have 3 Spades but will then have a bad 6-7 points.

I strongly recommend buying the 2/1 CD as well as it covers the material as well as adding a lot of newer competitive and constructive bidding conventions and has 125 quizzes.

The only negative is I think it would be helpful to have a list of bidding rules. I went through Mike Lawrences 2/1 CD and thsi book and took 9 pages of system notes. These helped me to learn and remember the 2/1 system. If you are unfamiliar with 2/1 it may be hard to learn the system from this book because the "rules" are never formally stated, they are hinted at. The way I learned 2/1 was to do Mike Lawrences 2/1 CD, then read this book, then read UncOntested Auctions. (And I still dont feel entirely comfortable with the sysytem). 2/1 is complex. If you and your partner don't know the system well you will noty get that much extra out of it, and you will suffer some costly mistakes.

Stay away from 2/1 unless you and partner are willing to invest a lot of time. I like 2/1 and feel it was worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars A Great and Original Addition to the Star Trek Universe.......2004-12-28

Peter David is perhaps the best writer of Star Trek fiction out there -- he has written many of absolute favorite Star Trek novels, Imzadi among them. In creating the New Frontier series, David breathes new life into a stale series that has been tied to the vision of Gene Roddenberry or the producers of the television shows. Not the case here. David mixes old and new characters to create an exciting story that is both original and true to Gene Roddenberry's vision. Among the new characters introduced Captain Calhoun is probably the best captain to sit a starship since Captain Kirk. He has many of Kirk's qualities, but also the leadership skills of Picard and Sisko. Peter David surrounds Calhoun with some old ST:TNG characters and new faces like Bourgoyne-172, a Hermat (hermaphrodite). Burgoyne-172 is the kind of charactes the TV producers would have been too scared to tackle. Overall, this book is a great new addition to the Star Trek universe.

5 out of 5 stars Just Be Open For Change.......2003-08-21

Usually I think of Star Trek as what mankind can do if it put it's mind to it. A utopia where anything is possible... If you are any of the following you might want to reconsider your those views and put them on the side before reading this series.

Peter David, has introduced a Hermaphrodite main crew character named Lieutenant Commander Burgoyne 172, she is the Cheif Engineer of an old Ambassador class vessel.. (Enterprise 1701-C was the same vessel class.) So far he/she has the hots for Dr. Selar... but I won't say more. If you can't tolerate this kind of writing in a story this novel is not for you.

Than there is the new Captain a brave Kirk-Sisko like character.
Mackenzie Calhoun. This man does not follow the tradition Starfleet by the book approach when you get into book 3 of this book, you will see why. I like this Captain only because he has a willingness to fight and or do the very unexpected when the odds are impossible.

I do not wish to go into the rest of the characters. I will say this... Peter David is a master Sci-Fi, writer, when he writes you can almost tell when he's having fun and when he's just writing... I like the inside jokes that Peter David writes.

If you are a TNG fan... You will like this novel. If you are a TOS fan you will like this novel. I have just ordered the rest of the series... I hope you all consider this a good novel.

This review is in reference to the turtleback, ISBN: 0671019783 and the four paperbacks.

      Book One: House of Cards
      Book Two: Into the Void
Book Three: The Two Front War
      Book Four: Endgame

Peter David being one of the best Star Trek authors throughout its history is rewarded with his very own series. I can only imagine how honored he must've been to be able to create a whole new series. Tasked with this, he stepped up to the challenge and exceeded even his own high standards. One of the main things I love about the whole New Frontier series is that Peter David is allowed more freedom with what he can do in the New Frontier series as opposed to one of the other lines. The only question I have about the first four books of this series is why is the series started off with four small books, when this clearly could've been accomplished with two books or one large hardcover? Either way, who cares, they're all four of them absolutely fantastic!

Just like Star Trek The Next Generation's "Encounter at Farpoint," Deep Space Nine's "Emissary," Voyager's "Caretaker" and Enterprise's "Broken Bow," the four book set or the turtleback containing all four is Peter David's introduction to this great new series! "House of Cards" starts off with the introductions to several of the primary characters. It also includes some great cameo appearances as well. Captain Jean Luc Picard from the USS Stargazer inspiring M'k'n'zy of Calhoun (Mackenzie Calhoun) to join Starfleet. Lieutenant Soleta is introduced to the series through a chance meeting with Ambassador Spock, consequently saving her life. And finally, the ever dreary Admiral Jellico makes his first of many appearances. Commander Elizabeth Paula Shelby from STNG's "Best of Both Worlds" is given a first name, a nickname and a history with the new captain. Ensign Robin Lefler and Dr. Selar are brought over from STNG as well. Dr. Selar's introduction is extremely interesting.

New to the world of Star Trek we're introduced to: Captain Mackenzie Calhoun formerly M'k'n'zy of Calhoun from the planet Xenex. Captain Calhoun is certainly one of the best new characters added to the world of Star Trek. Zak Kebron, who is the USS Excalibur's Chief Security Officer. He is a Brikar, a race of beings who are basically built like large, moving landmasses. Lord and later, Ambassador Si Cwan, one of two remaining members of the ruling family of the Thallonian Empire, which has collapsed. Which is the cause for Starfleet sending the USS Excalibur into Sector 221-G. Commander Burgoyne 172, the Excalibur's Chief Engineer. Burgoyne is a Hermat, which is a species where each individual is pretty much made up of both sides of the battle of the sexes. An particularly interesting character to say the least. Lieutenant Mark McHenry, the Excalibur's primary helmsmen, an exceedingly intelligent and of course, eccentric human.

Mix all of these extremely interesting characters together with Peter David's well thought out villains and what we have here is an enormously great line of Star Trek novels. The only downside, they are more or less in episodic format and have a tendency to end with To be continued...., and they're not a regular line coming out with several per year. The upside, with one exception, they typically come out two or three books at a time. If you purchase the turtleback containing all four stories, it includes a Star Trek New Frontier Minipedia. Overall this is a great series that will make a fine addition to your Star Trek collection!

5 out of 5 stars Note-Perfect Pulp for new Star Trek crew.......2002-07-11

If you like Star Trek, and you like Peter David, you can't go wrong with the first four books of "The New Frontier", his introduction to Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and the rest of the crew of the Excalibur. I was hooked on David's writing through his classic "Grey Hulk" series of Marvel Comics. I find his prose and wit stands out from the crowd (though they did bring in some good writers for the original Trek book series).

These first books in the ongoing "New Frontier" series are classically organized, developing the characters in their individual threads and then bringing them together on the Excalibur for a unifying adventure in their new territory. There's very nice balance between characters and a breezy pace. The Star Trek comics, er books, have a little more leeway with asides that you don't get in the TV shows or movies. With Peter David writing, the often serious tone is punctuated with comic relief. The time and place is set around the time of the Next Generation, with Jean-Luc Picard and even Spock putting in an appearance.

Just to be clear -- these books read like comic books, or like a Star Trek episode. It's pure pulp, but pulp of the highest order. One word of warning: these "books" are barely novella length; it takes about an hour to read each, and that's if you read the funny parts twice. All in all, just as Star Trek should be.

This is more than a story about sailing. It is a true romance of a newlywed couple's adjustment to life at sea and each other. Through 47 countries and 45,000 miles, we share their terror of a near dismasting and their delight of exploring new cultures. Sometimes witty and sometimes setting your pulse racing, what enlivens this true narrative is that the author freely shares her emotions and opinions from a personal point of view. She turns what could have easily been a travelogue into a tale of adventure, sometimes changing the names to protect the guilty!

A few weeks back I was stuck in JFK during a travel mess caused by software and weather. During the long, long layover, I met an interesting fellow, Bill Blodgett, the wife of the author. What an amazing and modest man. At some point he asked if I had interest in sailing and one thing led to another before he mentioned a seven year honeymoon around the world. One result of the trip was this wonderful little book. Although we will likely never meet, I have to say "Thank you Alicia!" for sharing your wonderful story and thanks to Bill for telling me about it.

What seemed like a curiously interesting title turned into an electrifying book about a seven year journey around the world. The author painted a vividly detailed picture of her long adventure and how she changed along the way. I would have never imagined how a cruise around the world could be so marvelous and at the same time terrifying. I highly recommend this book of exploring new lands, cultures, and friendships to anyone with a glimmer of adventure in their spirit.

A unique voice has recently surfaced in the world of bridge. With his first book, Logic, Intuition, and Instinct at the Bridge Table, R .Jayaram (Jay) advanced the revolutionary idea that bridge is NOT exclusively a game of logic. His second book, Moments of Truth at the Bridge Table - B.T. Batsford, further extended that idea. Now this third book, "Serendipity In Bridge" makes the case that the best results, sometimes unexpectedly, come when you utilize both halves of your brain, the creative side (right) as well of the logical side (left). Most, but not all, of the subjects of Jay's stories are prominent players from his native India. But, Bill Gates, Zia, and Eric Rodwell make appearances. Your perception of our favorite game will forever be changed.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but there are better books on Deduction.......2006-09-06

Of the 9 books I've read on Deduction/Counting this is the one I liked least. Its not terrible, but the others are much better. Maybe this was considered a good book on the subject 40+ years ago, but there are not much better books.

Its probably Intermediate plus/advanced, and not for Intermedaites or below.
The bidding is outdated in a number of hands, and I don't think all the inferences are that solid.

Start with Mike Lawrences "How to Read Your Opponents Cards"
Then read "Countdown to Winning Bridge" by Tim Bourke

I think these books lay a better foundation
          I also liked:

Card Placing for You - Kambites
          Card Reading - Eric Jannersten
Better Bridge for the Advancing Player - Frank Stewart
Dormer on Deduction - Al Dormer

All 52 cards is a fair book, with a wide variety of problems. I just think the instruction is not as good as in some of the others.

          5 out of 5 stars Incredibly informative.......2004-10-17

One would think that with only 52 cards divided four ways, a round of descriptive bidding and familiarity with the game itself, one could easily construct the hand on a partner or opponent. Yet how many times have you lost that finesse, or guessed wrong and got trumped or lost a game because trumps split 4-1 vs 3-2? This book lets you catch things like this and nip them in the bud. Very good read with lots of illustrations and examples.

One of the all-time best books. How to "see" the opponents' hands.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and too expensive.......2007-01-10

I was very disappointed with this purchase because very few, if any, of the activities are unique. It's only advantage is that it collates a good number of activities together in one place. However, I don't feel that the price for this collection is worth it given that I found most of these activities on the internet, for free, and on more than one site.

4 out of 5 stars Is this book really worth its pricey tag?.......2002-08-26

After being greatly impressed by the size of the box that this work arrived in I was a little disappointed by the rather cheap looking folder that was contained within. Indoor/Outdoor Team building games for trainers by Harrison Snow is presented in a large triple ring folder that at first glance looks like a standard undergraduate dissertation. However the way the work is presented and the price tag are both justified in the copyright blurb on the very first page.
Indoor/Outdoor is a not just a reference book but a step by step course for those who want to instruct their own team building sessions. As a result the price tag (which is $$more than I am normally comfortable paying for a book) not only buys you the folder but also the right to make photocopies of relevant pages to distribute to those who attend your workshop, and what a workshop it'll be!
Having spent the summer working as an outdoor pursuits instructor I was glad to see many of the best warm ups and ice breakers that I had already learnt succinctly described in a manner that transfers the necessary fun within which all team-building sessions should be framed. There's enough problem solving exercises to keep even the most competent team busy for a least three days and each description is followed by a few generally excellent paragraphs on how to debrief after the exercise. Very few of the exercises need much preparation or investment in equipment and can be attempted by any able bodied person regardless of fitness.
Along with the individual tasks Snow has included a very readable section introducing a few management theories, the need for strong teams and the whole framework of trust, safety and fun within which good workshops must run. He concludes with some exercises that provide a review of the workshop and a few more management theories that are again very well presented.
Like most work on this subject Indoor/Outdoor can occasionally be a little "touchy feely" but never to a nauseating extent. Snow also occasionally makes the assumption that his audience is entirely from the US but although slightly annoying this in no way detracts from the overall excellent quality of his work. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in running their own sessions but also recommend that you either practice on your friends or shadow an experienced leader before instructing paying customers.

          2 out of 5 stars Poor Value.......2002-01-11

A tremendous disappointment. One of the more expensive Team Building resource publications available and it does not deliver. In many respects, Mr. Snow has authored a well organized, adequately written resource BINDER. A three ring binder and 241 (mostly single sided) pages of information. Sadly, the liabilities completely outweigh the assets of this selection.

Almost every activity may be found in other, significantly less expensive books. Very few activities feature illustrations or diagrams. Even when included, the pictures may not be worth a thousand words. Those unfamiliar with an activity may have difficulty vizualizing some instructions. Which begs the question if you ARE familiar with the activities, why purchase the book?

The only justification I found for the seemingly disproportionate price was the permission granted by the publisher to photocopy the pages of the publication "for use by participants attending a training workshop conducted by the original purchaser." This might be a terrific value for those who provide training of trainer workshops or who have a large staff to train. If you primarily will be solo or co-facilitating team building sequences with various groups this may be of dubious benefit to you.

Bottom line: If Mr. Snow and/or McGraw-Hill republished the binder as a book (at a fraction of the cost), added more visual-aids and you were looking for a solid resource book, it might be a useful resource. In it's present form I'd recommend you keep searching. Karl Rohnke and several others have authored resource books that will provide you with much, much more for much, much less.

          Keep searching. . .

5 out of 5 stars Great Hands on edition.......2000-03-29

This book is a wonderful collection of activities that will build and challenge your team. The books is spiral bound so it allows you to "take it with you" and use it wherever your team is. The activites are not just the typical version, they are challenging, exciting, and when used can help you establish a solid foundation. The book is easy to follow and does include some diverse games and activities. No two are alike.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and relevant project management for Trainers.......2004-05-29

For trainers and learning professional, this is indispensable reading as it helps systemize and organize any training and learning project in a manner that ensures delivery on time and stakeholders' satisfaction: two things that I previously thought were almost impossible to achieve simultaneously!

This book assumes a basic knowledge of project management and helps focus the reader's attention on how to apply and customize this knowledge to learning and training projects. Beginning with defining the project and communicating it to stakeholders to the final evaluation stages; no aspect of the project has been ignored. Lou Russell liberally provides tools, templates, and ideas that can help organize the whole project from A - Z as well as practical exercises and activities at the end of every chapter that "do the work for you" should you have picked the book to help you through a particular project. In fact, I highly recommend using it while in the process of planning and delivering a training program.

Russell takes you through the project management process in nine chapters:

1: Beginning the project - an introduction to key concepts and ideas.
2: Defining the Project - From business objectives to issues and constraints, this is the initial stage of the project.
3: Panning the project - Help for building the project plan, calculating schedules and finalizing learning objectives.
4: A Course Development Template - Lou Russell relies on the Accelerated Learning framework for developing training, but I found his approach equally effective with the ISD model as well.
5: Managing the project - I found this chapter extremely useful as it focuses on elements that trainers might not think of like risk, monitoring criteria, and constraints.
6: Reviewing the project - The evaluation stage of any training implementation project.
7: Managing Performance Consulting Projects - Using the project management framework for performance consulting.
8: A Template for Managing external Suppliers - An ultra useful chapter on identifying the optimum supplier for your learning needs.
9: The Project begins - Summary and checklists for the start-up.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is for Real.......2001-10-11

Unlike many other project management "how to" books this book is for real. The contents are laid out in a logical sequence with practical and useful tools. The exercises and templates are realistic and applicable to what training project managers need. This is one book we never have to take off the shelf because it never makes it to the shelf!

          5 out of 5 stars A must-have for learning professionals!.......2001-09-28

Project Management for Trainers is an outstanding book. It provides clear and concise information on developing and managing a successful learning event.
Lou's book provides real-world answers to the complex challenges we learning professionals face on a daily basis.
The diagrams and checklists make the book a very practical tool that I turn to again and again. I bought a copy for everyone on my staff, and I always see their copy out on their desk--not on the shelf.

5 out of 5 stars A nice addition to my bookshelf at work..........2005-07-21

Learning to use Microsoft Project is one of those things I know I *should* know but don't. Project 2003 Personal Trainer by CustomGuide has now become the latest "just in case" addition to my bookshelf at work...

Content: The Fundamentals; Entering the Task List; Entering and Assigning Resources; Viewing the Project; Working with Tasks; Working with Resources; Working with Costs; Balancing the Project; Updating Project Progress; Checking Project Progress; Working with Reports; Working with Multiple Projects; Index

As a software developer, I work on a number of projects. But fortunately, the type of development I do is normally not such that it requires the overhead of having to use Project to plan it out. And if it does, I've been lucky to have a project manager to handle all that. I know at some point my luck will run out, however. Project 2003 Personal Trainer is a practical, example-/exercise-driven approach to learning the basics of the software. The philosophy behind CustomGuide is "I listen, I forget; I see, I recall; I do, I understand". Therefore, the entire book is set up to have you actually *do* stuff with Project in order to understand how it works and to learn how to make it go where you want. There's a CD included that is a Project 2003 simulator, so you can still learn the software even if you haven't plunked down a check to Microsoft for Project. This is really nice, in that it gives you maximum flexibility on where you can set up your learning environment regardless of software licensing issues. I can't think of too many better ways to get up to speed more quickly than with this material.

Don't expect that this book will be a long-term reference volume, though. If you are a full-time project manager who is going to live in Project, this book will get you moving quickly. But if you want to learn the fine intricacies of a Gantt chart, you'll need to look elsewhere. That's not to say that this book falls down in that area. It's just not meant to be the end-all repository of all things Project. Get this book, get your feet wet, develop some basic competency, and then decide if you need to go deeper.

I'll be keeping this book on my work bookshelf and watching it closely to make sure it doesn't disappear...

From leading business thinkers to frontline employees, most everyone agrees: Not only is more and more organizational work becoming project-oriented, but the pressure is on to accomplish projects in less time, with better results, and with fewer resources.

This new reality is making project management one of the most important and frequently requested topics for corporate trainers--and yet one of the most difficult disciplines to teach. In fact, most companies lack the expertise to handle the topic, resulting in expensive out-of-house training.

Enter THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP. Fourth in a much-needed series of "train the trainer" workbooks, it supplies the information and tools needed to design and deliver effective, on-target corporate training sessions on project management.

Packed with lecture notes, examples, problems, worksheets, overheads, and more, this hands-on trainer's manual is perfect for both professional trainers who need a crash course on project management and experienced project managers who need explicit training instruction.

In a classroom environment the Trainer Manual should be used in conjunction with the Crazy Colour PRINCE2TM Foundation with Practitioner Workbook (ISBN: 1-904782-22-1) and Crazy Colour Charts. The Trainer Manual is structured (as is the Crazy Colour PRINCE2TM Foundation with Practitioner Workbook) to correspond with each of the OGC’s PRINCE2TM reference manual chapters, covering each process, component and technique. The chapters in the Trainer Manual cover teaching tips, key points of the PRINCE2TM method, questions delegates may ask and questions to ask delegates. In addition to concepts that will help students understand the topics, the Trainer Manual includes exam tips to highlight to students, advice on how to successfully incorporate the workbook activities into a PRINCE2TM course, icebreakers and other PRINCE2TM classroom related activities. The significance and use of the Crazy Colour Charts are explained for presentation to the class. Checklists and invigilator tips are also included to help Crazy Colour PRINCE2TM trainers administer PRINCE2TM exams. An aspect of the Crazy Colour PRINCE2TM Trainer Manual that is highly praised by professionals and students is the use of the Crazy Colour project timeline to demonstrate the exception procedure, plan types, Quality Reviews and where each PRINCE2TM stage plan is created.
