Book Description
In THE PYRATES, the author of the celebrated Flashman novels pays tongue-in-cheek homage to the swashbuckling books and movies that have always stirred his imagination. In these rollicking pages you'll find tall ships and desert islands; impossibly gallant adventurers and glamorous heroines; devilishly sinister cads and ghastly dungeons; improbably acrobatic duels and hair's-breadth escapes; and more plot twists than you can shake a rapier at. A deliriously entertaining combination of Errol Flynn action-adventure and Naked Gun pastiche.

A tale that must be told.......2006-11-19
A brilliant book by one of my favorite authors. I stumbled on it by accident, while looking for Flashman. In a sense, this is even better: Flashie can sometimes get repetitive, but Fraser keeps this one moving. Virtually everyone and everything plays out in strict accordance with Pirate Cliche, with the exception of the cliffhanger ending. Walls between the narrator and the audience are broken down, so that Fraser can explain, for instance, what the background music or camera-eye view would be if this were a movie (and it should be-think of "Airplane","M.P. and the Holy Grail" and a solid Errol Flynn movie rolled into one.) I could say a lot more, but why bother? You should be reading the book. Trust me.
The pleasures of laughing out loud.......2006-10-14
Now that I've read all of the Flashman series, I went searching for something else written by George MacDonald Fraser. I came upon a book that he wrote some time ago entitled "Pyrates" (yes, that's the way he spells it).
This book is a hilarious spoof on all the pirate movies of the late 1930s...Errol Flynn, John Barrymore, et al. Our heroes are handsome down to their chins, our heroines are "real" blondes, at least according to Fraser (taking after Mickey Spillane's "I, The Jury"). Our villains are so evil that one even keeps losing his dentures.
But, as always, Fraser's writing has me guffawing as he (writing from the vantage of the 1980s) portrays things happening in the 1600s in current terms; ie, castaway sailors in the Indian Ocean were arrested by the Burmese Coast Guard and found guilty by a Burmese court for "fishing without a license".
This is one heck of a read.
Get Ready To Buckle Your Swash!.......2006-08-04
This has long been one of my favorite books. I've read it over and over so that I need to replace the copy that is falling apart. One does need to be familiar with the old pirate movies of the 1940s and 1950s to appreciate some of the jokes, but it is definitely in a class with the sort of antics that occur in Disney's Captain Jack Sparrow movies. Plus it has the added bonus of telling you what is real history and what is pure fancy on Fraser's part. My favorite character is the anti-hero, Col. Blood, who really did exist, no doubt with the same personality traits that Fraser has given him. I not only am ready to replace my copy but prepared to buy others as holiday gifts for the Captain Jack fanciers on my list.
The funniest book you'll read in years.......2006-07-06
Imagine the fantasy and imagination of The Princess Bride; take the joie de vivre of Pirates Of The Caribbean; mix it a little with the eccentricity of Carry On Don't Lose Your Head (leaving out the tackier parts of the humour) and then take each of your favourite pirate stereotypes (bad guys, good guys, black spots, needlessly evil Spaniards, sword fights and derring-do) and turn it into one of the most joyous and hilarious books you'll ever read. Oh, and some of the characters really existed, too, just to add a slight historical edge.
The Pyrates is perhaps the funniest book you'll read all year, perhaps it's the funniest book you'll read in many years. For a long, long time I thought it was the funniest book I was ever going to read.
One gets the clear impression while reading this book that GM Fraser, the author, has thrown caution to the wind. Normally his books are considered, paced and quite recognisably scholarly, for all their adventure and humour. With Pyrates, however, we get a writer having the most fun he's had in years, and sharing it with his readers.
Reviews can be used for many purposes; the purpose of a review may be to critique a novel from a particular standpoint, or it may be to throw interesting light on it by placing it in a broad context. The possibilities are almost endless. In this case, I'm going to nail my colours to the crow's nest:
I'm writing this review simply to tell you how much I loved this book, pass on some of the happiness it gave me, and thoroughly recommend that you get a copy of it as soon as you can. I hope it makes you laugh out loud as often, and as heartily, as I did!
Almost too funny.......2006-06-14
The Pyrates is a loving and over-the-top parody of pirate adventures, both cinematic (i.e. Errol Flynn) and literary (i.e. Rafael Sabatini and Jeffery Farnol) -- indeed, Fraser includes a long list of "influences" at the end of the book. It's told in a post-modern fashion, with plenty of deliberate anachronisms and direct addresses to the reader, reminding us of what is sure to happen, the book being fiction and all. It's very funny, in a way that is at times almost distracting, or perhaps tiring. Which seems an odd complaint -- that a purposely funny book might be too funny -- but at times I put it down simply because I was tired of the constant jokes.
The story concerns a valuable crown, with six jeweled sections, entrusted (by Samuel Pepys) to Our Hero, Captain Ben Avery, for safe delivery to the King of Madagascar. But unfortunately Avery's ship, in the charge of one Admiral Rooke, is secretly manned by a crew of pirates, who wish to free their comradess, the beautiful and bloodthirsty woman pirate Sheba, who is being transported to prison (or a slave camp or something) on the same ship. They free Sheba, and also steal the crown, which conveniently splits six ways. In the mean time they also kidnap the beautiful daughter of Admiral Rooke, Vanity, who has fallen in love with Ben. And Ben is accused of the theft of the crown. So he must attempt to recover the six pieces of the crown, as well as rescuing Vanity, and also restoring his good name. And his only help is in the dubious person of the rascally Captain Thomas Blood, who ended up on the same ship, and who also has his eye on Vanity.
Naturally Ben will ultimately be successful, but not before facing the attentions of numerous women who fall in love with him, such as Sheba, Anne Bonney, and a lovely young Spanish woman; and also dealing with the evil and sadistic designs of the Spanish governor in the New World; and also dealing with Captain Blood's various betrayals, most of which actually end up helping things, if only by accident; and also dealing with cannibals and religiously zealous natives and his own agent. And so on. It's intricately but of course not plausibly plotted, wickedly funny, all in all a good read if as I implied somehow less than a true masterwork.

Pirates
ASIN: 1598692550 |
Book Description
From the corsairs of the Barbary Coast to Blackbeard to Jean Lafitte, pirates have been a part of every culture for centuries. Sometimes terrifying but always colorful characters, their history is as rich with controversy as it is with gold doubloons. The Everything Pirate Book is full of fascinating and little-known facts.
Did you know that:
- Around 75 B.C., Julius Caesar was captured and ransomed by Cilician pirates. After he was released, it is said that he immediately hunted down his captors and killed them.
- Scottish seafarers and pirates were often nicknamed "red legs" because they wore kilts year round, and their bare legs were often wind- or sunburned.
- The image of the classic pirate, with flowing clothes, pegleg, eyepatch, parrot on his shoulder, and treasure map in his hand is primarily a result of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island.
With each passing decade, the legends surrounding pirates have grown to epic proportion, right down to their peglegs and buried treasure. The Everything Pirate Book will take you on a pirate tour from ancient times to their Golden Age to the modern-day search for buried treasure and reveals the truth behind the Hollywood hype.
Book Description
The surprising success of Pirates of the Caribbean, a new screen adaptation of the classic Peter Pan, and the Russell Crowe film Master and Commander have fueled interest in seagoing swashbucklers. There is a rich literature on pirates—both in fiction and nonfiction. This collection offers excerpts from the works of contemporary authors: Patrick O’Brian’s riveting account of a sea battle with Borneo’s pirates will enthrall his fans; Farley Mowat’s The Black Joke is a rousing adventure of the rum-running set in the 1930s and written in the tradition of the great classic pirate tales. Readers will also discover and rediscover the most infamous pirates of yore, from Treasure Island’s Long John Silver to Peter Pan’s Captain Hook. They’ll encounter pirate adventures from neglected classics such as L. Frank Baum’s Pirates in Oz, Alexandre Dumas’s The Count of Monte Cristo and Rafael Sabatini’s Captain Blood. And they’ll find accounts of the dastardly deeds of female pirates both real (Anne Bonney and Mary Read) and imagined (Arthur Ransome’s Chinese pirate Miss Lee). Pirates also draws upon colorful true-life accounts and authentic first-person narratives of pirates—and their victims—discovered in nearly forgotten works such as The Pirates Own Book and Captured by Pirates.

Pirate-lovers will find a crew of jolly, rapacious, and downright wicked scoundrels in this collection of stories for swashbucklers of all ages. Stevenson, Defoe, Salgari, R.M. Ballantyne, Howard Pyle, Dumas, all the legendary hitters are there. There is a vast sea of swashbuckling pirate adventure literature out there and this is a great way to sample a variety of styles and maybe even discover a few lost classics. If you're a fan of pirate fiction, it just doesn't get any better than this!

Cultural detail++++.......2007-03-10
I love this book. FYI I use it for d20 though it has both d20 and the 7th sea rules in it.
First, It has plenty of crunch for those who want authentic flavored feats and prestige classes. It has sword schools fitting the region and rules for nifty weapons and armor.
But the main reason I love it is the background info. Do you want to know what kinds of food you will find in Koryo...its in there,or what clothes they are wearing or even what there views on weddings and religion are... what types of buildings they have, what spices they use.... This is what makes the book shine. Even for DM's who have never been outside of their home state this helps build authentic detail to let players actually feel like they are there.
Good roleplaying book bad stereo types..........2007-03-09
this book helps with understanding how to play NPCs from the swashbuckling adventure's d20 series of 7th sea. Wow that was a mouth full. theres plenty of good refeences to o along with the role playing game usfe hint and tips to rules and how to apply them however if your asian beware you may be some what offended at the blatant stereo types associated with how asian culture is to the authors of the book.
Customer Reviews:
Once you buckle your swashes, you'll never stop........2005-12-04
I love Swashbuckling.
That's it in a nutshell. I'll grant you that the book is 3e. I'll grant you that the material doesn't always give us d20ers Table 5-2, which tells you everything you'd need to know about something. Some of the rules are missing, as is some of the fluff (assuming you don't get the R&K books, that is).
Despite all these flaws (and most of them aren't horrible; anybody with a brain can easily figure out solutions), Swashbuckling Adventures can give an expierenced DM an unforgettable campaign. It's not just the classes, although the Highwayman is a pistol-toting machine. It's not the world, even though it's close enough to Europe to be easy to associate with, but distant enough to have fun with. It's not the feats, or the prestiege classes (even though they're both amazing).
It's the fact that this genre can basically step right out of a Dumas novel, or a Zorro movie, or any pirate tale, or the Three Musketeers, or anything vageuly in that time period.
There are secret societies. There are power structures. There are forces at work that the PCs can either be caught up in, or lead.
There is adventure, villians, heroes, mysteries, treasure, and danger. All of them can be modified how the DM sees fit without destroying the campaign's feel.
To sum it up, Swashbuckling Adventures is so fun, it is the expansion set I am using for my last campaign as an undergraduate.
High adventure with pirates, Musketeers, and sea battles.......2003-02-14
This is a great RPG you get to choose from many many new classes that expand the D&D universe into the mid 1600's the age of the rapier and dueling. muskets are the technology of the day and pirates sails the worlds oceans looking for loot to plunder and ships to capture. Burried treasure is to be found and the likes of the Dread Pirate Roberts, Captain Blood, and Black Beard are about along with the dreaded Reis. If your fancy keeps you land bound try your hand and wit at the fights of the musketeer or a coutier or mayber even be a marauding "North man" come to plunder the "civilized" world for riches, glory, and women. You choose the order!

Dance on the Edge of the Rapier.......2005-04-29
Between these colourful covers you will find a complete set of rules and a campaign for a Live Action game, four adventures, over 100 plot hooks, and a time-line that brings us up another five years! And I must point out it is all duel stats {both R&K, and d20}! As I have said before, I played in this LARP at the 2003 SoCal GenCon. It was awesome. The point system they use to control the "action" in the game is simple and effective. It uses a combination of stats and "hero points" {a rough equivalent of Drama Dice} you can raise your abilities with the hero points and you can earn more for daring deeds {a side note for those who play in Skudley's Saturday game; at GenCon they used the same tokens for their Hero Points as I do in my game. Hmmm, great minds...}. The adventure, "Giovanni Villanova's Grand Ball", is not a simple affair. The players are "guests" or "gate crashers" at the birthday celebration for Giovanni Villanova. Of course where the Villanovas are, intrigue, fowl play, dirty politics and dastardly deeds follow. This adventure plays like an elaborate session of "Host a Mystery". It requires a large group, several GMs, the appropriate setting, and plenty of preparation.
The four adventures follow in chapter two. "The Tower of Faith" is set in Eisen in the year 1668. A plot involving the death of the Hierophant, a Montaigne officer, a cardinal, and love... Great plot if you are running a 7th Sea Hero campaign, but most d20 players lean toward the "dark side" and the scenario needs a bit of tweaking to work there. However, this adventure does offer chase rules and an encounter table! Something missing from the Swashbuckling Adventures Book, and this alone is worth the price of admission. "Four `n Twenty Black Birds" is, by far, the best of the four. This adventure takes a page from the popular television series "24 Hours" and inserts the Villanovas, a Vestin or two, a jeweled rose, and love, to make a daring adventure that spans a time of twenty four hours. And here is the kicker, it's written so that the game time and play time coincide to make an adventure that lasts twenty four hours {I don't know about you, but as a GM I could get at least three to four sessions out of that}. My only complaint is that this adventure needs a cast list that defines the rolls at a glance; I had to take notes to keep up! "Fischler's Rescue" takes us to the small town of Seeufer in Eisen and involves the town Eisenfürst {Eisen for "mayor"}, his advisor, Heinzelmännchen {Eisen gnomes}, Kobolds, and love {it's a Swashbuckley thing; think of all the Swashbuckling movies you've ever seen, yep, love}. I enjoyed the plot, and it has a good background story, a GM could use it as filler and to give the players some new contacts in Eisen. In the last adventure "Adventure in Puerto Grande" we find ourselves in the Midnight Archipelago. This escapade involves an opera house, a fire, pirates and {you guessed it} revenge. This venture comes in a close second. It works for both Light Heroes and Dark ones, no tweaking necessary.
Chapter three offers us plot seeds and adventure hooks, in fact that's the title of chapter three: Plot Seeds and Adventure Hooks. The first offering is more of an adventure sapling than a plot seed. In fact it offers a story to follow and several asides to fill in the blanks. The rest of the chapter is dedicated to ideas for adventures in all the lands of Theah and several of the secret societies. More ideas than found in villain's bag of tricks.
And finally we come to the additions to the timeline 1670-1675 and more. My oh my, what they do to Avalon, the church... Best not to say, I don't want to spoil it for you. I am, thoe, quite intrigued...

Costly mistake!.......2002-06-30
In December 2001 I recruited a person to our business and because I hired on my gutfeeling I made a very expensive mistake. Now seven months later after enormous amounts of energy and resources devoted to that person I had to fire him.
This book has thought me the importance of looking at working habits and past actions when hiring people. Maybe you can teach a old dog to sit - but who has the time and money for that!
If you are hiring - buy this book and do it right!
The Hiring Process - Will make or break your business.......2002-06-02
"High Impact Hiring" by Del Still is a must read for everyone from the President of a Company to the Dept. Manager charged with interviewing & hiring decisions. Once you have read this book you will find you are more equiped to gather the pertinent information on candidates which will ultimately give you greater success in this most important decision. Hiring the right individual is one of our Corporate clients greatest challenges so we have been giving this book to them to assist in facing the hiring hurdle. With the assistance of the book they are capable of meeting the hiring challenge with confidence. As the President of one of Southern California's premier CPA firms I am involved in all of our own internal hirings and am so grateful to have read this book. My advise to those of you who are involved in this process is "Don't hire without first reading this exceptional book!" Your business cannot afford the wrong individual. Creating an exceptional company can only be acheived with exceptional people within an organization.
"You win by building an exceptional work force".......2001-04-25
"Making the right hiring decision is more important today than ever before." Del J. Still writes, "I don't have to tell you about the impact of smarter competition and globalization of today's business on profits. I'm sure you've felt the pressure. If not, you will. Even the smallest company cannot afford to operate as they have in the past and expect to suceed in today's pressure-filled environment. How do you win? You win by building an exceptional work force"(p.19).
In this context, throughout the book, he presents his 7-Step interview model that can be summarized by one seven-letter word- 'PROCEED.' He argues that "It is an acronym where each letter represents one step of the process. 'PROCEED' is your blueprint to interviewing success. You'll be amazed at the results you achieve when you follow this process, step-by-step"(p.42).
Step 1: Prepare
* Identify existing superior performers
* Create a job description for the position
* Identify the competencies or skills needed to do the job
* Draft interview questions
Step 2: Review
* Review questions for legality and fairness
Step 3: Organize
* Select your interview team and your method of interviewing
* Assign roles to your team and divide the questions
Step 4: Conduct
* Gather data from the job candidate
Step 5: Evaluate
* Determine the match between the candidate and the job
Step 6: Exchange
* Share data in a discussion meeting
Step 7: Decide
* Make the final decision
Finally, he writes that "Even though the material I have included in this book is based on years of research and practical experience, it can always be improved. I encourage you to experiment with the methods and discover what works best for you...The cardinal rule is to 'stay legal' and 'play fair.' The 'best' thing you can do is put someone in a job where their competencies closely match the requirements. The 'worst' thing you can do is the opposite"(p.221).
Highly recommended.
The Ultimate Interviewer's Handbook.......2001-04-01
With all the books on hiring out there, I didn't expect to find one that showed me a system that worked flawlessly. This is a must have book if you are at all involved in the hiring process. It's worth its weight in gold! Buy it before it sells out. Enough said.
Proceduralizes Interview Techniques.......2000-06-27
Over the dozen years that I've been interviewing and hiring staff, I have "self-developed" many of the techniques the author presents. However, I had not formalized them. This book provides methods and procedures, helps develop a mechanical thought process, to structure the pre-interview selection, the interview, and the post-interview analysis.
I used the book to augment my own "self-grown" interview process recently and with tremendous success.
This book is a "must have" arrow in every manager's quiver; young or old, new or mature. Whether you have "home-grown" an interview technique, had HR force one upon you, or are looking to develop a strategy, this book will help.
