Book Description
Volume I
New ideas, technical novelties an more on the age old Italian game with 4,d4!, allowing the sharp and forcing "Italian Gambit" to emerge. This move, a surprising one to many, transforms the classic "Giouco Piano" or literally the quiet game into anything but its revered and somewhat sedate namesake.
Black's third move, 3...Bc5 seems "safe" and allows the second player plenty of time to develop (quietly) for positional play. This will occur on White playing almost any reasonable move, except for the center assaulting initiative gaining 4.d4!...being the main focus of this endeavor.
4.d4! is clearly a forcing move, Black must react! Whatever unfolds from this point, White will have central control, lead in development, the initiative and it is White not Black who will get the first emerging opportunitites.
Accurate play by Black is necessary to hold and neutralize the initial gains of opposition, and it will be difficult to demonstrate anything better than equality, or that White cannot claim real compensation for the gambit pawn.
This Book involves no less than three (3) years of study, Master analysis; including complete computer verification of all important variations.
Volume II
This masterful work is short, yet concise and to the point, guiding the 1.e4 player in handling and management of all of Black's classing opening responses.
1. Nf6 - Alekhine's
1. e6 - French
1. d6 - Pirc
1. d5 - Scandinavian
1. c6 - Caro Kann
1. c5 - Sicilian
1. Nc6 - Nimzowitsch
These lines have been studied and developed over many years by the venerable Chess Master and teacher Jude Acers, they are the essential and recommended lines for all play that commences 1.e4, but are especially effective for the new "limited" time controls in present and future tournament play.
All levels, whether they be the first or second side of the board will discover fresh arsenals for both attack and defense. As White, once you embrace (and you will) these "to the point" openings, this book will take you via clear reference to the sources of future study. As Black, you must be prepared. The reader will not be overwhelmed by masses of theory or endless analytical variations, but shall discover how and where to find such material.
- A clear opening guide for the newer player
- A no nonsense opening system for the more advanced player
- New concepts for the Upper Echelon of chess to meet the coming evolution of "Knockout" and "less time" in serious tournament play.
- STAY ON TOP, become a world super star in the global phenomena of mass appeal.

eccentric but fun.......2006-04-15
I enjoyed the references to classical games and the way the author showed how the theory developed. I play the Max Lange whenever possible but castle first before pushing the pawn. Knowing more of the theory here would have saved me working it out myself through a lot of trial and error over the years. There is much in this volume to think about.
That said, it is a rather eccentric piece of modern publishing. The layout and even the typefaces are all over the place. Some of the games referenced annoyingly don't have dates. The Classical Giuocco Piano header notation on page 128 doesn't match its diagram.
The book is a bit like Alice in Wonderland, things get 'curiouser and curiouser' although it is fun to look around.
Very badly organized.......2005-02-27
This book has a lot of original ideas and a lot of colorful stories, but the arrangement of the material is very bad. It is rarely clear what "best" play is supposed to be, and when Acers encounters a theoretical problem he will often cop out with a remark that the line gives good practical chances or is very strong in fast-time-limit games, rather than trying to get to the objective truth. The reader must do a great deal of work to construct a real repertoire from this book -- there are enough good chess ideas that it can be done, but a lot of irrelevant material is thrown in, because Acers can't resist name-dropping or showing some famous brilliancies that don't actually bear on the analysis in the book.
The main theoretical contribution is Laven's "Miami variation" -- 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4 Bc5 4 d4 Bxd4 5 Nxd4 Nxd4 6 Be3!, which appears to give sufficient compensation to equalize and good practical winning chances against an unprepared opponent. This means that 4.d4, previously thought bad, is actually quite playable, and has many transpositional advantages. The other valuable analysis is in the Two Knights variation 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4 Nf6 4 d4 exd4 5 e5! d5!? 6 Bb5! Ne4 7 Nxd4, where it is shown that Black cannot fully equalize and White can maintain an endgame bind with a small advantage (and no losing chances).
A Unique and Entertaining Chess Book.......2004-12-16
This book contains much analysis not found anywhere else. How many currently published chess books can say that? What makes this book so entertaning is the collection of personal stories by Master Acers that permeate the volume. One sees a unique perspective on chess in the trenches and learns unique twists on classic games. This is a great chess book to study or just to read. I highly recommend it.
JUDE ACERS - Great Chess Player and Storyteller.......2004-02-15
It's Awesome!! The simplicity of the read is breathtaking! The Italian Gambit System is one of the best gambits I've ever seen. No other author writes like this!
Italian Gambit -awesome book.......2004-01-31
Jude Acers has written an awesome book ! I love the graphics, the chess stories, the chess analysis, and Jude's commentary. Jude brings to life many American chess players, who played the game with great heart and spirit. Jude's prose is filled with the fighting spirit of Bobby Fischer and Ken Smith. Jude's passion for the game comes out in his lively prose.
HIs chess stories remind me of the oral history style put to prose by the great Studs Terkel. This book is a must read for anyone interested in chess, or the history of its players, including many great american chess players who are not known that well. Honor is due Jude ACERS on his outstanding book ! I hope his book will spark a new american renaissance in chess!

An excellent way to explore 1.d4.......2004-12-06
This is book gives very playable lines with 1.d4 without giving highly analyzed lines that are constantly revised. This is invaluable for me because I want a readily playable repertoire without going deep into every possible reply. I especially like the repertoire for the Nimzo-Indian and the King's Indian, which I have had difficulty playing against until I used this repertoire.
My only criticism with the repertoire is that sometimes the lines are somewhat tame for my style--for example he chooses a Slav exchange variation.
However, I supplement this repertoire with Steffen Pederson and Graham's QGD for the attacking player. Between these books, I have basically everything I need to play 1.d4.
A real killer repertoire..........2003-08-19
If you are looking for a repertoire that is solid and agressive, this book is a very good choice.
The lines with 1.d4 and 2.c4 are timeless, good and tested in GM play. To avoid memorization and the need to keep up with opening theory, the authors recommend lines that are relatively less used by GMs. Such lines are, nevertheless, very good (the line against the King's Indian with 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nge2 is relatively unknown (among amateurs) and can generate a powerful attack which is not easy to stop - namely the "h" pawn push. White can, in many instances, transpose to favorable lines of the Samich).
What I like best about this book is that most of the lines are easy to learn, positionally sound and strong (white gets a firm grip of the center in almost every line) and fun to play (almost all of them lead to logical strategic plans for white to attack against black's king).
If you are rated between 1300 and 1900, this book alone will provide you with all you need to learn from the white side of the board. If (when!) you reach 1900 +, you can expand and add variety to this repertoire, which is, in spite of the small size of the book, complete enough for any club player.
Decent one volume reference for club players rated 1400-1900.......2000-02-11
This is a repertoire book (I guess that's why the title, huh?) that picks one variation for white in response to each black defence.
The repetoire is based around the Queen's pawn opening (1. d2-d4 followed normally by 2. c2-c4).
The lines featured are typically fairly solid - the authors tend to avoid the highly complex, overly sharp lines that require a lot of memorization.
I have personally had pretty decent results by following the recommendations contained in the book.
The book has an explanation at the beginning of each chapter outlining the ideas behind the opening. This feature alone makes the book valuable, especially for lower rated players who will get nothing out of the typical opening monograph with no words and all symbols.
The books limited size means that a higher rated player, such as 1900+ will definitely have to supplement the book with more specialized materials in order to be prepared for that exalted level of opponent.
There seem to be few (if any) typos in the book and the selection of illustrative games are pretty good.
The only reason I subtracted one star was for the lack of depth in certain chapters.
Book Description
In his two-volume Gambiteer series, opening expert Nigel Davies produces a complete opening repertoire which is certainly not for the feint-hearted: uncompromising and wild attacking ideas for both colours. This first volume deals with a gambit-style approach for White; the second volume will concentrate on an ambitious black repertoire. All of the opening lines Davies advocates in this book lead to positions of open warfare, where sharp, tactical play completely dominates dreary positional subtleties.
*A complete opening repertoire for White
*A feast of blood-thirsty chess
*Ideal for the attack-minded player
Product Description
This volume is devoted to the main lines of one of the most popular and interesting openings in chess theory - the Ruy Lopez.
Book Description
This book is devoted to the contemporary variations of the classical system of the King's Indian Defence. The author classifies into that group the lines in which after: 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.d4 0-0 6.Be2 e5 7.0-0, Black plays 7...exd4, 7...Na6, or 7...Nc6.
Book Description
The Sicilian Defence is Black¿s most ambitious and popular defence to 1 e4. Finding a suitable weapon against it has taxed many a grandmaster¿s brain. Should White dive into the labyrinth of mountainous theory and complications, in which the player who knows the latest theoretical wrinkle is likely to prevail, or should White abstain and instead head for the more tranquil waters of the various Anti-Sicilians on offer? Perhaps the answer lies somewhere in-between! In this book, Grandmaster Nigel Davies tackles the Open Sicilian head on, but still develops an easy-to-use system for White based upon the fianchetto of the king¿s bishop. He arms the readers with an impressive repertoire which enables them to face the Sicilian Defence with renewed confidence.
*Covers all Black¿s possible Sicilian defences
*Ideal for club and tournament players

Highly recommended for dedicated chess players.......2003-02-07
Accessibly written by chess grandmaster and trainer Nigel Davies, Taming The Sicilian is a highly detailed chess manual showcasing techniques and strategies that players of the White side in a game of chess can utilize against one of the most popular opening moves for the Black side. Numerous technical diagrams and instructions cover variations including the Najdorf, Classical, Scheveningen, Pelikan-Sveshnikov, and more. An excellent guide for advanced chess players looking to sharpen their skills further, Taming The Sicilian is a highly recommended addition to any dedicated chess player's reference shelf.
Product Description
The fourth book of the series is devoted to opening schemes, which arise after the moves 1.e4 d6, or 1.e4 g6. These systems have proved their right of existence, despite the numerous attempts to refute them once and for all. The positions are so diverse strategically and so rich tactically that they deserve a separate volume. Black avoids early clashes and narrows his sphere of influence to only three ranks. However, his harmonious development enables him to attack often Whites powerful center successfully.
The 14th World Champion Khalifman recommends against the majority of the flank systems schemes with f2-f4, which provide additional control over the center. He included in this fundamental work plenty of new and original analyses which surely will cause Black a lot of trouble!

Great repertoire book for club player.......2002-05-22
This is an excellent, eminently practical book. Schiller has been accused of churning out books, but this one comes across as a labor of love. It is an excellent blend of text and variations, and he really gives you a feel for the Reti opening. There are lots of good reasons to play the Reti; the flexible first move, Nf3; the avoidance of queen's gambit theory; the avoidance of traditional approaches to the king's indian and grunfeld. In that sense, the Reti allows you to largely call the shots as to the direction of the game. This book has a special magic for the club player who wants to play the opening--one can get started almost right away, as you do not get bogged down. In that sense, the book is simpler than many opening manuals. But there is as much depth as I need, and one feels that one has a coach along for the ride in Schiller. He has great enthusiasm for the opening, and includes some of his notable wins, but he does not sugarcoat it either. The book is also very well made and solid, and is a pleasure to work through. All in all, a great chess book.
Pressure with Hypermodern Systems as White.......2001-01-03
If you are of USCF playing strength 1600 to Master level, I believe you will find this book interesting (surprisingly interesting, I should say). The book gives solid examples of how hypermodern opening systems can ellicit poor play by black (primariliy due to apparent black non-familiarities with resulting non-classical and/or hypermodern opening structures). The non-familiarities inevitably lead black into inferior positions. The book also provides sound theory against solid black defensive systems adopted against white playing a hypermodern opening. In becoming intimately familiar with the Reti-System as outlined in this book by Schiller, you will find yourself going (1-0) against players who are rated several hundred points above your current USCF rating. I can attest to this because I have done so myself utilizing theory presented in this book! I must warn that if you are not a patient player, using the Reti system is probably not for you. Black will occupy the center until pawn breaks at e4,d4,c4 or even b4 will destroy the stronghold. The fact of the matter is simply this; Because there is still much to be learned about hypermodern play and inventions, the competitive player can prepare lines using these systems where black will be caught off-guard. I have also found much success in 5 min. blitz games with the Reti opening. I simply attribute this to too many players being comfortable with common/classical opening play.

The fourth book of the series provides a weapon against the Slav, Semi-Slav, Queen's Gambit Accepted and other less popular systems.
Book Description
The English is a sophisticated opening which has been popular amongst players of all levels for many years: from up-and-coming players to World Champions such as Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik. One of its main attractions is its flexibility: it can lead to situations rich in both tactical and positional play; it can be played either aggressively or quietly; and opponents also have to be wary of subtle nuances or else risk falling into one of its many move-order traps.
In Play the English! Craig Pritchett produces a comprehensive and yet practical repertoire for White, presenting an answer to all of Black’s key defences, whether they are in the crucial main lines or the tricky offbeat variations. Drawing upon his wealth of experience in this opening from both sides of the board, Pritchett highlights both the positional and tactical ideas for White and Black. A study of this book will arm you with the essential knowledge to begin playing the English with confidence in your own games.

Pretty good.......2007-05-14
Occasionally the book was either wrong or would tell you a much harder way of doing things. In all it was a good book though. I would buy another book from them.
Great guide.......2007-01-21
Great guide for the money. Really help me through the end of the game. I would by more guides for my other games after using this one.
Needs some organization.......2006-03-21
Good walkthrough but would have benefited from having the extras (elemental fruit and elixirs) mixed into the walkthrough instead of at the end in an "extras" section. I had to go back and walk through many of the same areas to find the stuff I had missed.
