The author of The Grapes of Ralph has produced an irresistible combination of words and images that brings Jones the cat vividly to life. In The Book of Jones, Steadman captures the special grace of cats and the strange power that they possess to enchant us. Line art throughout.
Customer Reviews:
A great cat, a great artist.......2000-11-29
Jones was the cat of Hunter S. Thompson. Ralph Steadman, the artist for many of Thompson's books, was at his house on numorous occasions and made various scetches of the cat. After jones had been dead for some time and Ralph famous, this slim volume was published as a tribute.
What can I say? I like cats and I like Ralph Steadman's art. It works for me.
Appeal lost on me.......2000-04-24
As one who loves good literature and cats, I was eager to own this book after reading the reviews. I was disappointed with each and every page! I found the story and the 'characters' lacking both depth and interest. I am not familiar with the author, but closed the book wishing he had allowed someone else to put his sketches to word.
It was a very enjoyable and easy book to read........1999-01-24
This was a very enjoyable book, especially for cat lovers. As a person who has nine inside cats, I really understand the personality of Jones and can see how he got under Ralph's skin. The drawings are wonderful, and even though I personally didn't know Jones, I felt like I did. I give this book 5 stars and recommend it to anyone who likes cats.
"JONES IS DEAD!!!" - Hunter S Thompson on his cat's death.......1998-06-23
This book was given to me for my birthday by my wife after we had seen it in a bookstore. I've always found Steadman's work to be amazing, and he doesn't disappoint this time. From all accounts, Jones was a typical cat: supremely disdainful of everyone around him, and yet more than willing to take advantage of Hunter, et. al., when necessary. The bond between a cat and a person is never easy to describe, and yet Ralph does so with surprising ease. Those of us who are familiar with Dr Thompson and his works can easily see how he and Jones were perfect for each other. A must read for cat lovers and Hunter fans alike.

Book Description
The intimate biography of the charismatic, hugely talented, influential, and troubled Willie Morris-star editor of Harper's in the 1960s and author of North Toward Home and My Dog Skip
Willie Morris, the famously talented-and complex-writer and editor, helped to remake American journalism and wrote more than a dozen books, with several classics among them. His time at the head of Harper's magazine, where he was made editor at age thirty-two, is legendary. With writers like David Halberstam, Norman Mailer, and author of this book, Larry L. King, Harper's became the magazine to read and the place to be in print. Morris was friend, colleague, or mentor to a remarkable cast of writers-William Styron, James Jones, Truman Capote, George Plimpton, Gay Talese, and later in life, Barry Hannah, Donna Tartt, John Grisham, and Winston Groom.
In Search of Willie Morris is a wise, sometimes raucous, and moving look at Morris that conveys the energy and activity of the years at the top and the troubles, talents, late rallies, and mysteries of his later life. Written with the affection of a close friend and the critical insight of a fellow writer, it is an absorbing biography of an extraordinarily gifted literary man and raconteur who inspired both wonder and frustration, and who left behind a legacy and a body of work that endures.

Willie's back in town.......2007-03-25
I didn't discover Willie Morris until shortly after he died. After reading North Toward Home and New York Days, I gladly would have traveled across the continent to meet him. Few persons are born with as much charm, and fewer still are born with as much intellect. Now Larry L. King has brought Willie back to life in the pages of a generous and understanding biography. You won't find a better opportunity to revel in Willie's company one more time.
Decoding Willie Morris.......2006-06-10
I would like to thank Larry King for introducing me to my former brother-in-law, Willie Morris. (If that sounds a little bizarre at first blush, it will seem less so to those who read Larry King's book.) I always liked Willie and respected him for his achievements, but I never had any illusions that I really knew him. While I was aware of most of the "facts" -- albeit after they had passed through some dubious filters -- that was clearly not enough to understand Willie Morris. Larry King supplies many of the missing pieces, and he does so with frequently lyrical prose, wit, and keen insight. Those who want to know about Willie Morris and his times should read this book and "North Toward Home," sparing themselves the subsequent "dueling autobigraphies" of Willie and Celia Morris.
Larry King accurately captures the famous Willie Morris charm. I learned about it first hand in one of our rare private moments. Willie told me that he had never had a brother and was looking forward to the experience. Although I was aware at the time that this probably wouldn't really work out, I was quite taken by this gesture to the "kid brother." After all, I was certain that however our relationship evolved, it HAD to be an improvement over having an older sister. Meanwhile, I was already impressed that he had been a baseball player and that my parents clearly didn't really approve of their daughter's choice of husbands. Thus, his "charm offensive" certainly worked on me and apparently on many others as well.
King also explores Willie's dark side at some length, but does so sympathetically. At the minor end of that scale, King notes Willie's propensity for isolating himself from the outside world, ignoring letters, messages, or other forms of contact. I understand better now why ne never responded to the occasional notes I sent him complimenting him on this or that piece that he had written. (My wife had somewhat better luck.) At least I learned from Larry King that I was in good company and, in retrospect, don't take it as personally as I did at the time. As Larry King makes clear, Willie had much more serious problems to worry about.
As good as the book is, I have to wonder how broad an audience it will attract. (Of course, the question is somewhat academic at this point.) To be sure, Willie Morris achieved much, especially in the early part of his life, and he certainly rubbed elbows with the famous and powerful. Moreover, there has always been a Willie Morris "cult" -- or, more precisely, cult(s) -- that will dutifully read the book. Still, in the grand scheme of things, that is a relatively small and somewhat rarefied audience. While there's nothing inherently wrong with that, I think Mr. King may have missed an opportunity to introduce a broader audience to Willie Morris. That is too bad because Willie has indirectly affected many people who have probably never heard of him. In that vein, I think that Larry King's basic conclusion that Willie Morris should be remembered mainly for his literary contributions is wrong. Instead, I think Willie should be remembered primarily for those whose careers he helped nurture, including Larry King himself. For example, in martial arts, the measure of a master is the skill of his students. Without extending the metaphor too far, to the degree that Willie Morris helped make it possible for David Halberstam, Larry King, and others to create their magical works and reach wider audiences, we should all bow to his memory. The world owes him a debt. THAT should be Willie Morris' legacy.
Willie's back in town.......2006-05-09
I didn't discover Willie Morris until shortly after he died. After reading North Toward Home and New York Days, I gladly would have traveled across the continent to meet him. Few persons are born with as much charm, and fewer still are born with as much intellect.

Willie We Hardly Knew Ye.......2006-05-08
To readers in Mississippi and throughout the South, Willie like Elvis doesn't need a last name.
I first learned of and became a fan of Willie Morris when in the 70's I read his mid life memoir of sorts, North Towards Home. It was one of those books I never forgot. I was less impressed with Morris'later works, especially New York Days.
( Boy talk about industrial strength name dropping. But I digress. )
In this book, Morris' long time friend Larry King provides a lot of info about Morris, his carrer, his friends and enemies, his ups and downs, his affairs, etc. While it is an informative and enjoyable read, it is kind of streange in that the author in many instances seems to abandon his "search" for Willie to indulge in a search for himself since he was so close to Morris. That may be a not unacceptable price for the reader to pay to get the huge number of intimate insights into the life of someone who was nothing if not over the top interesting.
As with any such book, there are places where detail gets out of control and scanning is in order, but they are minimal.
Willie Morris, warts and all, will always be remembered fondly by Mississippians as someone who never lost his love for the state ( and its considerable number of "warts" ).
You might have to be a Mississippian to really enjoy the book, but then again you never can tell. Definitely worth a spin.
From a life of promise and its decline.......2006-04-17
This is a biography of a life that might have come off the pen of Eugene O'Neill. Willi Morris was a mississippi native who made it big as a writer of a couple books well known in the American literary community, and was head of Harper's magazine for a critical few years.
From this peak of power he degenerated into a life of drinking and womanizing until finally settling down as nominally a college professor back at Ole Miss.
Larry L. King (not the TV host) has written this biography to show Willie Morris as a friend, a genius, a writer and editor of some fame that is now largely forgotten. At the same time, it shows some of the weaknesses, the troubles that made his own life unpleasant.
Willie Morris was one of those people that don't quite reach the highest rungs of the ladder, but come very close, only to fall back down. He was an assist, friend and mentor to many of the best writers of our time.

Runners get involved with a music diva and her troubled past.......1999-05-16
Mercurial is a solid adventure for Shadowrun and worth getting even tough conversion work for the third edition will be neccesary. The adventure is split into two parts, the first involving the runners with Mercurial via her scuzzy manager Max, and the seconed half dealing with all of the nasty stuff that the runners are involved with by becoming to close to this person. The run has alot of versitility ranging from (big) gunfights to heavy decking to taking on some of the nastiest paranotmal types around (dragons anyone) . The thing that stands out more, though, is the opportunity for roleplaying as opposed to the movie style action. The plot is very NPC charecter driven. The motivations and desires of the people involved are realy what the story is about. This puts it a cut above the average "go steal the thingy" type adventure. What I liked about the run was the cool plot, the neat twists and the opportunity for the charecters to make a significant contribution to their reputation and bank accounts. On the other side, the foes can range from nasty to murderous. One wrong move and there will be street pizza for everybody so good planning is essential.

talk about outdated.......2007-06-27
this book was likely a looker back in the day, but its 2007 now. Need to have better details for non "C"-users. wish i had bought "Idiots Guide to C".
A classic book of numerical algorithms.......2006-12-24
This book, although published 15 years ago, is still very useful. In fact, its more recent counterpart "Numerical Algorithms in C++" is a mess, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The explanations of the algorithms that occur in each section of this book are top-notch. It helps with such questions as "Sure you know how to evaluate an integral with pencil and paper, but how do you do it with a computer?" Everything from linear algebra techniques to integration and evaluation of functions to the FFT and spectral applications are explained clearly and coded up in C. The code is great too, with the exception of one problem that several reviewers have already mentioned - the author has a FORTRAN-like programming style in which each implementation has arrays going from 1 to n versus 0 to n-1. This does cause some implementation problems if you want to transfer the algorithms into another programming language. Overall, though, I can't think of one book that does all of the heavy lifting that this one book does as well as it does in the arena of numerical algorithms.
The book is now available online. Just type "Numerical Recipes" into Google and click on the Numerical Recipes Home Page to peruse the entire book free of charge. You might also find the "Numerical Recipes in C Example Book" useful. That book is simply the source programs that demonstrate all of the Numerical Recipes subroutines. Each example program contains comments and is preceded by a short description of how it functions. I know I found it helpful in many cases.
Very nice book.......2006-08-27
A must buy for students or researchers who need numerical methods. Comprehensive topics. A good place to start to deeper levels. Online book is good for quick look.
A classic, and still worth having.......2006-07-12
"Numerical Recipes" has been a staple in computing libraries for many years, and for good reason. It provides immediately usable implementations of all the workhorses of numerical computation, in production-quality form. Maybe there are better implementations out there, FFTW for example, but getting something to work correctly always comes before getting it to work fast. Numerical computation is a specialty, and vanishingly few of us are specialists. As a result, getting this much specialist knowledge for the price of a very few hours' wage, fully debugged and documented, is a great bargain.
I have to agree with the critics who point out that the Gnu Scientific Library (GSL) is more complete in some areas, and offers better licensing terms. This collection has its own strengths, though, and not just in documentation. The writeup, however, is the major interface between the software and us, the bio-ware. GSL's collection of 'man' (help) pages serves a purpose, but this book's exposition describes a lot more of the background and rationale for the routines. The code and man pages are self-evident statements of the implementation - but "what" is a very different question than "what else" or "why."
This one may not serve all needs. You'd be amazed how many it does serve, though. If you need more than a Matlab session for numerical computing, you need this.

Great compilation of numerical routines for C programmers.......2004-12-17
I found this book indispensible in my effort to develop profitable trading systems for futures and options and in my research in factor analysis and, more recently, in chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Anyone who programs in C or C++ and works with mathematics must have this book. It covers a surprisingly wide range of algorithms: routines are included for everything from handling Julian dates and solving systems of linear equations to determining eigenvectors and singular value decompositions, solving differential equations, doing numerical integration (quadrature), not to mention calculating fast fourier transforms, lomb periodograms and maximum entropy spectral analyses. While not always state-of-the-art, the routines are quite reliable (when used correctly), clearly-written, and easy to understand and use. I would strongly recommend this book (and the companion software) to anyone who programs in C and is literate in mathematics. I always keep a copy nearby.

Definitive book for scientific computing.......2007-06-29
Forget about the bad comment about this book. Those guys do not understand scientific computing at all.
About C style functions and C++ classes: for speed, C style functions still take the lead. The method provided here considered speed seriously. even in vector wrapping, reference trick is used everywhere to max speed.
If you are professional programmer, you will appreciate the careful design in vector and matrix. I am not saying it is perfect. There are better ways to handle vector and matrix more consistently, like boost lib. but within the limited scope of this book, the care for details is just incredibly good.
And the extra charge for the typed program, it is worth it. So stop complaining please.
Disappointed.......2007-03-12
I returned this book. The licensing is very restrictive. The book comes with an "Immediate License" that allows you to type the routines into your computer and use for personal and noncommercial purposes. Any other use or distribution requires the purchase of an additional license.
Some of the routines (Quicksort, p 336) are not very well coded: a bunch of one letter variable names, loops that only exit on break.
This book contains recipes in C piled together in one class, DON'T BUY.......2007-01-25
Book contains the same numerical procedures as in recipes in C piled up in one class. Using this book is like using C without exploitation of object capacities on C++.
What I would recommend is to get the vector library Blitz++ and Numerical recipes in C; both are available for free on-line. Using Blitz++ you achieve speed of Fortran 90 and easy exposition of C++.
And that's what author of this book should have done, write all the procedures based on blitz++.
This book uses C++ only in its title.
context not included.......2006-11-21
Have only read over the first four chapters but so far the book seems to be little more than a print out of minimally commented source code with no context as to how/where/why one would apply the code or even explanations of what the code is doing. All code seen so far relies heavily on the included classes so the 'guts' of the recipe is not transparent with in the chapter. Sample user input and program output are not always listed with code but rather at the end of the chapter.
Still may prove to be good reference.
C++ Recipes.......2006-11-03
It is very helpful in scientific computing. I recommend it for an experienced programmer. If you are a fledgling, get another book to complement it.

Handy companion for Numerical Recipes in C.......2007-03-09
If you need to see programming examples on how to use the numerical algorithms that have been transformed into C code in Press' classic Numerical Recipes in C, then this is a very handy little book. Every chapter in this book has a one-to-one correspondence with the chapters in Numerical Recipes. The code is clear and well-commented. However, there is one draw-back. The code in this book is written in the same annoying Fortran style as Press' other book. Press codes like a Fortran programmer who just won't give up the ship and do things like start his arrays at zero instead of one. However, assuming you have waded through Numerical Recipes prior to this, understanding his programming style is one of the skills you should have already mastered. Just remember there is nothing complex going on in this book. You are just being shown examples on how to use the subroutines in the other book.
