Book Description

This marvelous treasury of card magic presents the exact details of 155 professional card tricks that anyone can learn. The world's number-one card wizard, John Scarne, reworked an exciting series of classic card tricks to eliminate the need for sleight-of-hand. Simple instructions and clear diagrams illustrate Houdini's "Card on the Ceiling," Blackstone's "Card Trick Without Cards," Carlyle's "Piano Card Trick," Milton Berle's "Quickie Card Deal," and Scarne's own "Drunken Poker Deal" and "Knockout Card Trick." Scarne presents all tricks with advice on accompanying patter, offering helpful suggestions about the kinds of words and gestures that give performances a professional gloss. Introduction. Index.

The book arrived fast & in great shape. My nephew loves it! He loves it so much that he had to have the Scarne book on magic.

4 out of 5 stars This can make you a true card magician.......2003-02-22

Many magicians own the Classic book "Scarne on Card Tricks." But it is said if you want to keep a trick a secret, put it in print! Most of what's in Scarne on Card Tricks is no doubt a complete mystery to most laymen--and many magicians! Its a great book for the card beginner.

On the other hand, there's a lot of boring and tedious count-down stuff in there as well.

The book is BIG--over 300 pages of carefully detailed effects. It can be a little overwhelming to someone the first time he picks it up. How do you separate the wheat from the chaff?

Best, in my view, are the tricks that can be done TOTALLY impromptu, with very little or no stacking, when a deck is shoved into your hands and somebody says "Do a trick!".

Here are some of the effects that I have judged to be best, based on the above criteria:

The Upside down Deck by Francis Carlyle
Hit the Deck
Scarne's Follow the Leader
Cardini's Color Discernment
Card on the Ceiling
Card through the Handkerchief

Of course, You Do as I Do is also a classic, though it is fairly well known among magicians.

In short, a little work digging out the best tricks will make you a true card magician in most people's eyes, with enough practice and performing experience.

5 out of 5 stars Still the best.......2001-10-26

This is the definitive collection of non sleight-of-hand (you don't have to be quick with your hands) card tricks. I bought my first paperback copy in 1974 when I was still a schoolboy. Some of the tricks are easy but astounding, such that I've memorised two of them and have amazed my friends over the years until now. Since then, there hasn't been any other card trick manual that can beat this one, to the best of my knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on non-sleight-of-hand card tricks available!.......1998-10-13

John Scarne is today perhaps best remembered as a leading authority on gambling scams and card cheats. However, in his prime, he was one of the best magicians in America. In the late 40s, as stated in the Introduction, Scarne decided to gather for magicians a set of card tricks involving no sleight-of-hand. The result is "Scarne on Card Tricks". The 155 effects in the book range from quick tricks and puzzlers to more elaborate card demonstrations. All of the effects are attributed to either the originator of the effect or to a magician who used the effect frequently. The book clearly bears Scarne's unique genius not only in the selection and variety of effects, but in Scarne's improvements of the original effects. There is no doubt that anyone can put together a most entertaining routine with the material in this book. Two words of caution. First, the copyright of the book is 1950 and so some of the patter is clearly dated and needs to be revised for contemporary audiences. (Patter is the words or story that accompany the effect.) Second, because the effects are easy to do when practiced, there is a tendency to perform the effects before fully thought out. For every hour learning the basic effect itself, two hours should be spent on how to present it in an entertaining and interesting manner. The book itself, however, remains one of the very best in card magic. Scarne's work clearly stands the test of time. Frankly, the book is a steal at the published price. I bought two copies because I knew I'd wear one book out. I did. The book is that useful.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Magic Instruction Book Ever!.......1997-06-10

I've been fooling millions of people with Scarne's sensational non-sleight of hand card tricks from this book. It doesn't take much practice to master these tricks yet the effect on your spectators face is- how the hell did you do that? As a cardician, I think every card trick enthusiast should have it

4 out of 5 stars A true classic, with some caveats.......2002-08-26

John Scarne was an authority on card playing, and he wanted you to know that. He never lets you forget. Scarne's book is filed with self-promotion, and that's actually part of its charm. A lot of the so-called "according to Hoyle" books describe various games competently, but this book has personality, bombastic though it is. It's a fun read.

But Scarne wasn't perfect. His blackjack strategy is just plain wrong, so don't pay attention to it - Find a book on blackjack if that's what you want. Also, I find his description of cribbage very muddled and confusing. Some of the games are obscure, such as Radio Pinochle, which, as far as I can tell, was never played by anyone anywhere (despite his prediction that it was destined to be the most loved game in America).

The discussion of cheating was groundbreaking, and still worth reading. Scarne felt that games would be more honest if everyone knew how to cheat, so he includes not only a section devoted to the subject, but specific notes under each game's section describing cheating methods peculiar to that game.

I recommend it highly, but take some of his advice with a grain of salt.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely must find this book.......2002-03-11

John Scarne is a master. His life is as intriguing and entertaining as his card playing. The man was simply a genius. I am lucky enough to have uncovered copies of his books from my father. This book is one of them and I learned to play a lot of card games from it. Its truly unbelievable.

If you can find any Scarne books do so.

5 out of 5 stars You must find a copy of this book.......2001-05-22

"Scarne on Cards" has got to be the most entertaining book about card-playing ever written. John Scarne was a card-playing genius -- and a witty writer to boot. This book focuses only on a few of the most popular card games, specifically those that can be successfully gambled at -- poker, blackjack, gin rummy, pinochle. But the lessons taken from those games could be applied to hundreds of others. Scarne doesn't just explain the rules; he explains how the games are won. If you're only a marginal card player, even a cursory reading of this book will make you better. At times it's technical, but Scarne's style is anything but dry. You'll enjoy this book. It's worth the effort to find a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Vade mecum of card players.......1998-11-22

A lot of people think they hate cards. They haven't read this book. Written by an acknowledged expert of card games, card tricks, and detection of cheating, the book starts out with a priceless explanation of how card sharks cheat, and how to spot it. His advice is always to just get up and get out when cheating is suspected. He then explains how to play poker, gin, pinochle, blackjack, and many others, with great advice on how to win within the rules. There are plenty of "complete Hoyle" type books with lists of rules, but this one goes them one-up with the priceless savvy it gives you about the real world.

4 out of 5 stars A great reference guide.......2002-03-26

For casual card players, this book is a comprehensive guide. I have never seen so much detailed card-game knowledge assembled in one place. Scarne not only provides basic rules of the games, but also describes variations, strategies, and little-known factoids. This is primarily a reference work and is not designed for 'straight-through' reading.

3 out of 5 stars good...but dated in places........1999-08-07

Overall, well written and accurate on most games, save blackjack. Ifa better understanding of blackjack is your aim, you will be betterserved by a Ken Uston book. But for gaming probabilty elsewhere scarne knew his stuff.

2 out of 5 stars Buy another book..........2004-06-03

There are many books out there that no poker enthusiast should be without. This is not one of them. Although mildly entertaining in the beginning due to the author's bombastic nature, the book becomes a truly tedious read. The biggest problem is that the book is dated (1984 copyright) and compiles poker strategy into general rules for five card draw and stud (forget about hold em or omaha). The author then expects the reader to extrapolate the given strategies into seven card games. As an added bonus, most of the strategy (if not obvious even to the most oblivious newbies) is either unsound or irrelevant. The only redeeming value of this book is for those who are seeking an encyclopedia of dealer's choice games. Please save your money or buy another book (Peter Steiner's Thursday Night Poker is superb for amatures, Slansky and Brunson are essential for aspiring pros).

4 out of 5 stars Great man, Great Book.......2002-03-11

Humility is not one of John Scarne's traits but he has room to talk. The man is a genius in the realm of statistics, gambling, and gaming. He is self taught which makes his intellect even more astounding.

That aside, this book is all you need to play poker and play it successfully. By following the guidelines set forth by this genius it is only a matter of time before your experience catches up with your knowledge and you will be unstoppable.

Ok, maybe it takes alitte more work then that but you get the point. Scarne's books are the best, hands down. If you can find some of his older book (Scarne on Cards is my recommendation) pick them up. They are invaluable.

3 out of 5 stars A requirement for any poker library. Just ignore Mr. Scarne.......2001-09-05

This book has quite a few good points and strategies along with probability theory. I believe it will greatly improve a beginner and average poker players style if he/she reads and applies some of the basic principles herein. However quite a few of the strategies are common sense (never play with money needed for groceries -- duh).

Mr. Scarne himself is an egotist (anyone familiar with John Scarne should know this), so one must take him with a grain of salt while reading. Mr. Scarne believes his poker should be the definitive one. I don't think Scarne's rules will ever be "the rules" for poker, and his "according to Scarne" (takeoff of "according to Hoyle") stance on poker rules is a little outlandish. One must remember for all the card tricks and stunts he can pull (and they are REALLY good!), this man has never won a major poker tournament. You can build a cold deck, but that still is cheating in honest poker.

Anyway, get past the man for it is a decent treatise on poker strategy.

4 out of 5 stars A little something for every kind of poker player.......2001-07-02

Scarne's Guide to Modern Poker, though over 20 years old, holds more useful info on poker than I've seen in any other poker book. Scarne covers topics such as rules for Draw and Stud Poker, with many variants, some major poker probability principles, money management in poker games, which poker games to avoid, and popular poker cheats (something most poker books ignore). This book deals exclusively with real poker games, played in a group of people, where the only possible house take is a fixed percentage or amount per pot (and he shows you how to figure out if a commercial poker house is giving you a bum deal). If you want to learn how to deal with video poker or casino poker games like Caribbean Stud, let me tell you right now -- you can't possibly make money in the long-term playing those games. Scarne himself will tell you this in one of his other gambling books.

There's basic sound advice to be found in this book, advice you will find elsewhere: obvious things such as don't borrow money to play poker, don't play against people highly superior to you at poker, and don't play when drunk or emotional (unless you really want to lose money). However, there's advice I haven't seen elsewhere (except when they're copying Scarne): ways to prevent common card cheats, ways to calculate whether one should stay in a pot based on pot size versus your odds, and ways to mix up your play, so as to make people uncertain of your style -- so that people will stay in the pot when you've got a sure winner, and so that people will drop out when you're bluffing. I've used this last bit of advice in playing poker with friends; they know I play close to the vest (I'm very conservative on risk), so when they see me calling & raising bets, they think I know I have a sure thing. I've gotten away with some pretty horrendous bluffs with this technique. The name of the game is: don't do it too often.

There are complaints about the number of stories Scarne tells about himself (and sometimes he refers to himself by name, and I go back to check who wrote the book.) Actually, in most of the stories, Scarne's not the central character; rather, some prime poker player is the center of the story. Some of the stories of the tricks he's performed is rather neat. But more to the point, I think these stories are good examples of the kinds of tips and strategies he talks about -- he mentions stories of cheats, of bold betting, and of people who have gone from great poker players simply to good, because they lost betting courage and needed to find games more their monetary limit. More to the point, I feel Scarne is completely justified in "puffing himself up" in these stories of high-roller games and visits to the Merv Griffin show - he can back up his self-promotion with actual knowledge and skill. Scarne also knew how to write a book that would serve poker players at any level, giving specifics as well as general principles to follow. For those wishing to improve their games, this should be the first book you get.

2 out of 5 stars News to Me.......2001-06-19

I have to begin by admitting that I did not read this book in its entirety. I was startled, however, to learn that John Scarne invented the game of poker! I was going to read works by several authors and compare them, but since Mr. Scarne invented the game of poker along with many other popular pastimes including craps, keno, bacarrat and breathing air, I think I'll take another run at his book.

Not a bad deal for ten dollars. The main flaw with the book is that there are very few pictures to help explain the tricks. Though, with just a bit of imagination most of the tricks are easy to figure out. Though, the great thing about this book is that for ten bucks you get 200 tricks. The tricks are all picked that can be done with easily obtainable objects. There a dozens of tricks that can be done with object found at any bar or dinner table. Plus there are some great mental tricks, which are my favorite and require no objects or simply a piece of paper and a pen.

This is a Dover reprint of the 1965 edition of Scarne on Cards. However, the photos showing card cheating techniques are missing. Also, the reprint is the abridged paperback version by Mass Paperbacks. While Dover is famous for printing its books on high quality paper that are signature-stitched so that it can last a lifetime (and possibly be rebound), none of this is present. The paper it's printed on is like the paper of a low-quality paperback and not signature-stitched. I was hoping that it would have come out much better and unabridged.

          Book Description

mod_perl embeds the popular programming language Perl in the Apache web server, giving rise to a fast and powerful web programming environment. Practical mod_perl is the definitive book on how to use, optimize, and troubleshoot mod_perl. New mod_perl users will learn how to quickly and easily get mod_perl compiled and installed. But the primary purpose of this book is to show you how to take full advantage of mod_perl: how to make a mod_perl-enabled Web site as fast, flexible, and easily-maintainable as possible. The authors draw from their own personal experience in the field, as well as the combined experience of the mod_perl community, to present a rich and complete picture of how to set up and maintain a successful mod_perl site. This book is also the first book to cover the "next generation" of mod_perl: mod_perl 2.0, a completely rewritten version of mod_perl designed for integration with Apache 2.0, which for the first time supports threads. The book covers the following topics, and more: Written for Perl web developers and web administrators, Practical mod_perl is an extensive guide to the nuts and bolts of the powerful and popular combination of Apache and mod_perl. From writing and debugging scripts to keeping your server running without failures, the techniques in this book will help you squeeze every ounce of power out of your server. True to its title, this is the practical guide to mod_perl.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent investment.......2006-08-10

We have been using perl for our server side programming for over 6 years now. During this period, the popularity of our web based applications has grown. To deal with the growth, we have had to optimize the programs, as well as look at alternate server setup strategies. We acquired this book as it covers both the topics of our interest -- mod_perl for efficiency of perl programs and setting up servers that use mod_perl.

In the course of the optimizations, we have gradually moved into the mod_perl world. It has yielded significant performance improvement, probably making our web application more than 50 times as fast. "Practical mod_perl" served as a guide while we carried out this transition, which has resulted in dramatic savings in our server costs. I have no hesitation in saying that this wonderful book is perhaps the best investment we have ever made in technology.

5 out of 5 stars As the title suggests.......2005-11-02

This is very practical. It starts with a lot of information on how apache works and how mod_perl and other modules intract. Then, after learning that information, it shows how you can use the knowledge to signficiantly improve the performance of your mod_perl apps.

In addition, it gives valuable advice on how to troubleshoot fustrating issues with mod_perl & apache.

This book should be required reading for anybody doing mod_perl work.

          4 out of 5 stars mod_perl from the horse's mouth.......2004-11-11

This one of the most informative O'Relly books by absolute metrics: almost 1000 pages packed with useful information. It pretty much covers all bases: from porting existing CGI scripts to mod_perl, to architecturing busy websites for optimal performance. One of the authors, Stas Bekman, works on mod_perl full-time, so this is it's basically as authoriative as it gets.

The only drawback of this book that I noticed is that it sometimes gets too heavy on basic Perl or sysadmin stuff, making the experienced developer flip pages in anxiety. Also, some parts are too similar to online mod_perl documentation (which is not surprising as it's written by the same person).

Still, this is the first book with substantial mod_perl2 coverage, and probably worths buying for this reason alone. All in all, if you're coding mod_perl for living, I think you owe it to yourself to have this book in your O'Relly collection.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive guide to mod_perl administration.......2004-03-17

At almost 900 pages, this is certainly the biggest book on mod_perl that has been published so far. In my opinion it's also one of the most useful.

Stas Bekman and Eric Cholet are two of the best-known and (probably more importantly) most respected names in the mod_perl community so you can be sure the the information you get in this book is going to be top quality.

Part 1 of the book is about mod_perl administration. It starts with an overview of what mod_perl is and how it relates to CGI and the Apache web server before going into a chapter which gives a quickstart guide to installing and using mod_perl on some of the most common platforms. Chapter three then goes back over the installation process in far more detail. Chapter four explains how to configure mod_perl in various ways and chapter five cover monitoring, upgrading and maintaining your mod_perl enabled web server. Chapter 6 is full of advice about how to write Perl code that takes advantage of mod_perl's features.

Part 2 is all about mod_perl performance and contains chapters about benchmarking and tuning your server. I found chapter twelve to be particularly useful as it discusses a number of useful strategies for splitting server load between a mod_perl server for dynmaic content and a "plain" (non-mod_perl) server for static content. Other chapters in this section cover other strategies for improving performance by tuning Apache's configuration, changing your Apache and mod_perl build options and being cleverer about the HTTP headers that you return.

Most dynamic web sites have a database involved somewhere so part 3 covers using databases with mod_perl. Part 4 is all about debugging and troubleshooting your mod_perl server. Finally, part 5 looks at what has changed with the release of the forthcoming mod_perl 2.0.

And this isn't just theoretical stuff. The two authors have been involved in developing mod_perl for a long time but they are also mod_perl users. You can just tell from the way they write that the problems they discuss are problems they have dealt with. This is the voice (or, rather, voices) of experience.

A lot of the text in the book is based on the mode_perl guide which has been available on the web for some time, but all of the content has been revisited, updated and expanded. This book is not really in competition with books like The mod_perl Developers Cookbook or the older Writing Apache Modules with Perl and C as those books largely concentrate on how to write code for mod_perl whereas the emphasis in this book is on configuring and administering a mod_perl server.

And if you are the administrator of a mod_perl server then you should really consider adding this book to your library.

4 out of 5 stars Useful, informative volume on mod_perl.......2004-02-19

Practical mod_perl is a doorstop sized volume that provides more information on using mod_perl than you ever thought you needed.

The almost 900 pages are divided into five parts and a bunch of appendices. Part I, "mod_perl Administration" covers building, configuring and installing mod_perl, followed by some Apache details and an 80-page guide to coding with mod_perl in mind. Part II, `mod_perl Performance' deals with ways of getting the best out of Apache and mod_perl, with a little about security. Part III deals with databases, including persistent connections and data sharing. Part IV is a great guide to debugging and troubleshooting. Part V is a brief look at Apache 2 and mod_perl 2.

The appendices are useful. The first is a short section of around a dozen small `recipes' for performing various tasks using mod_perl. I found these a good base for more complex tasks, particularly when combined with examples from elsewhere in the book. The second is a list of Perl modules that extend Apache and mod_perl with a brief description of each. The third gives some strategies for providers wanting to host Apache with mod_perl. The fourth and fifth give good overviews of the Template Toolkit and AxKit, an XML application server built on mod_perl.

The book is readable, tending towards heavy writing and certainly dense, but I didn't feel this was a problem in a book meant for a fairly advanced audience. I think you'd want to be a fairly good Perl programmer and well versed in Apache before needing this volume and shouldn't expect to be spoon fed. I thought it well written.

In a book of this size you expect to find a lot of example code, and you won't be disappointed. The book is peppered with short Perl examples and example command lines and configurations, all well explained. The one shortcoming is that there aren't many examples of full-blown applications where you can see everything discussed and have it explained all in one place. I would have appreciated some more of this, the examples tend to be on the short side.

This book sits well in the marketplace. It provides more details on running, installing and configuring mod_perl and Apache than mod_perl Developer's Cookbook (and also delves more into the reasons for doing something one particular way and much more help on debugging), though the Developer's Cookbookbecomes a good companion to this volume as it provides a lot more in the way of examples. For those that want to get deep into the high end of mod_perl there is Writing Apache Modules in Perl and C, which is at core a good book on high end mod_perl programming.

O'Reilly have their usual website with Table of Contents, an example chapter, and errata. The authors have their own website with some of the same information and all the code examples from the book as both individual files and one 40k tarball.

I would recommend this book to anyone who administers and writes for mod_perl, it fills the missing pieces in mod_perl Developers Cookbook and is a good companion volume to it.
