5 out of 5 stars Great Gift for Poker Lover.......2007-09-20

I got this for my husband and he hasn't stopped reading it. He will only pause to tell me something he thinks I might want to hear. 8-) I'm not a poker person, but with all the Poker on TV that I've seen (because of my husband) and listening to him endlessly talk about it, I think if these books have kept his attention the way they have, they must be good.

I don't know if that helps you but knowing my hubby, anything that pulls him away from playing poker must be good.

5 out of 5 stars they look great, fun and easy to read.......2007-09-18

As I said, this set looks great on my "poker books shelf" :) But aside that, it's a great read. Even the black book with many interesting details about poker. Green book is well written but my favorite is the blue book. It was so valuable to me to have a free ride threw profesional's poker mind. Highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Good Easy Reading.......2007-09-06

Have read 1st two books, and took a 3rd & 5th in tournments, can't wait to finish last book!!

5 out of 5 stars Great poker books!.......2007-07-24

I have read 15-20 poker booksa and these are among the best I have read in a long time. Phil's dedication to the game and his committment to keep learning is well communicated in an easy to read style. It keeps you entertained and makes you feel ready to be more aggressive with a better understanding of what winning poker is about.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2007-05-07

EXCELLENT trio of books for novice to expert. Phil does a great job of explaining as well as challanging you to think. your game will definately improve after this book. Put it together with Dan Harringtons 3 books and you can't find a better poker combo period. 2 contrasting style of players but overall the same message. Just a great trio of books.

Book Description

Phil Gordon plays poker with the best players in the world. He has won -- and lost -- in tournaments and cash games around the globe, all the while studying the game and learning from every hand dealt. As the resident expert and cohost of Celebrity Poker Showdown, Phil has quickly become one of the most sought-after teachers of No Limit Texas Hold'em. It's a tough game. But anyone can become a winning player with the right amount of courage, patience, aggression, observation, and, perhaps most important, dedication to becoming a better player.

After fifteen years of keeping notes on the things he's learned, the greats he's played with, and the celebrities he's taught, Phil Gordon has poured every single thing he knows about No Limit Texas Hold'em into this little green book. Taking a page from Harvey Penick's bestselling book of golf wisdom, Phil plays the role of both teacher and student, offering up insightful tips on how to think about poker and how to develop a singular style of play. Through philosophy, psychology, strategy, math, and the knowledge gleaned from playing poker with everyone from T. J. Cloutier and Phil Ivey to Hank Azaria and Ben Affleck, Phil breaks down the game into enlightening instructional tidbits and illustrative anecdotes that inspire the kind of persistence and motivation necessary to improve your game.

A book to rank with Doyle Brunson's Super System and David Sklansky's The Theory of Poker, Phil Gordon's Little Green Book deserves a spot on the shelf of every serious student of the game.

5 out of 5 stars Great Little Green.......2007-09-22

I have read quite a few books by the pros. However, this one is clearly the best so far. He speaks in terms that are understandable and he explains things well. I recommend this book for anyone in their early years of competing.

5 out of 5 stars Gives you good advice.......2007-09-01

When you start playing Texas Hold'em, this is a good book to read now and then.

5 out of 5 stars If you never read a poker book, this is a great first read........2007-08-29

If you've never read a poker book, this is one of the first books you should read. It will tell the novice how to start thinking about the game. If you ar fairly new to the game, then you will find this book a wealth of information. An intermediate player will find alot in this book as well, although it may never be 'cool' to quote Phil Gordon. Unfortunately, I think Mr. Gordon explains Pot Odds poorly. SUMMARY: For the player who wants to improve but doesn't want to get too deep into poker theory, there is no beating Phil Gordon. The Audiobook version is great for long car rides or subway commutes.

5 out of 5 stars Thumbs up for Gordon's green book.......2007-07-04

Found this to be very educational and easy to follow. Actually listened to it typically driving out to a poker tournament and was able to apply some of the topics immediately.

4 out of 5 stars good mix of theory and play.......2007-05-23

If you like the scenario type reading this book will help you. I get bored with just calculations so knowing the though process was helpful.

Book Description

In Poker: The Real Deal and Phil Gordon's Little Green Book, Phil Gordon -- a world-class player and teacher -- shared the strategies, tips, and expertise he's gleaned during his phenomenally successful career. Now he shows players how to apply those theories to actual hands in order to make smart, confident decisions with every move.

Gordon walks readers through hands that he's encountered in cash games; early, middle, and late tournament play; Sit & Gos; satellites and supersatellites; and the final table of the World Series of Poker, revealing not only what plays he made but also why he made them. He relates what goes through a pro's mind in every situation, whether it's a timely bluff or a questionable call, and helps players calculate their own best moves in the most pressure-fueled of situations. In analyzing specific hands, Gordon also imparts important lessons in key poker skills such as calculating odds, shorthanded play, and discovering tells. And he discusses memorable plays -- the good and the oh-so-bad -- explaining why certain moves were made and, in many cases, how the hands should have been played differently.

Insightful, witty, and filled with real-life pro secrets, Phil Gordon's Little Blue Book is required reading for every player looking to make a profit and raise his game to the next level.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Basic, but good. Short and Informative.......2007-08-29

If you have basic poker knowledge (read the Phil Gordon's Green book) then this is a great follow-up. Even if you didn't read the Green book, you'll learn something reading this book. It's an easy read, entertaining, and has some good info. For a casual player who wants to get better but doesn't want to get too involved in poker theory, there's no beating Phil Gordon's Green and Blue book. For a serious player, it's still a good read if not a bit fluffy, like Phil Gordon himself. READ IT!

2 out of 5 stars Occasional gems but few and far between.......2007-05-15

Phil Gordon claims that "The Little Blue Book" will teach you how to think about poker. I do not think his work lives up to that claim. The book is dedicated primarily to tournament analysis, with the first quarter of the book dedicated to cash game play.

If a book claims to teach you how to think about poker, then it firstly must provide a generic framework for thinking about poker problems and then it should use specific hand examples to show you how to apply that framework to make profitable decisions.

Gordon's book is a haphazardly assembled collection of hands along with his analysis, some of which is insightful and some of which is not. Some of his advice includes:

"Be careful when playing hands that are easily dominated - even drunks can play top two pair effectively"

"Do not underestimate the power of implied tilt odds. You can at times take the worst of it if a monster suckout will open a fire hose of angry tilting money"

"It's usually correct to slowplay when you flop an absolute monster"

"When a player who never bluffs makes a bet or a raise, you have to put him on a big hand"

To be fair to the book there are some good points inside but nothing that a solid intermediate poker player would not understand already. For a more comprehensive treatment of tournament poker, I would definitely recommend Harrington's three part poker series. I can't really recommend Gordon's book to any type of poker audience.

5 out of 5 stars Phil Gordon.......2007-05-13

I have all of MR. Gordons books (3)....I enjoyed all of them...anyone who plays poker....should add them to their poker library...shari

4 out of 5 stars Real Poker Stories.......2007-05-07

This is a great book for someone who knows the basics of Texas Hold 'Em, who has read some books on poker but found it hard to put their general rules of advice into effective play. Phil has found a form for combining real situations with the advice -- his stories around particular hands. Thoroughly enjoyed reading these stories and suspect you will as well.

4 out of 5 stars Good Pleasure Reading.......2007-04-11

I am a little over half way through this book. I think it is similar to Harrington's (Harrington on Hold'em) style of writing about holdem in that it presents situations and takes you through the thought process of Gordon as he negotiates the hand. Campared to Harrington, Gordon's work is a little more to the point, a little less technical, and good pleasure reading. Each story has a little tip ("Key Analysis") at the end. I recommend it for anyone who loves the game and already has a lot of experience in playing and understands the fundamentals.

4 out of 5 stars Handy reference.......2006-12-01

This is a handy reference on different poker games for Dealer's Choice night. It's not exhaustive (several of our favorites aren't in it, though similar ones are).

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the home game player!.......2005-06-29

I bought a copy to take to my weekly (for over seven years) poker game. We loved it! Most of our favorite dealer's choice games were in there, although the rules were often a little different. We enjoyed leafing through and picking out new games. We loved playing the old games "by the book." There are loads of ideas with 90 games described inside. I was forced to leave my copy there, to use regularly, so I'm shopping for an extra copy. I've bought several other books that described dealer's choice games, but none as thorough as this one. Tips, strategies, quotes, and loads of games. I'd have given it 6 stars out of 5, if that were possible!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Dealer's Choice!.......2005-01-03

A friend brought this book to my New Year's Eve poker party.
It clearly explains Dealer's Choice games even for the
novice players and the more experienced players used it to choose
games they'd never tried before. Spiral binding a plus. We had a blast!

Little Blue Books were a popular series of abridged literature and instructional material published by Emanuel Haldeman in the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s (with some in the 1940s and 1950s, but the heyday had passed). The intent was to provide knowledge to the "common man" in a compact format for the purpose of self-education.

4 out of 5 stars Persuaded me to keep reading and wanting to learn more!.......2006-02-15

This book scores a triple play! Its three authors unite to create a book that will help anyone turn their writing and Web site into a winner. It is packed full of valuable information that is presented in an easy to read fashion. The authors have a unique writing style that is witty and humorous and keeps you entertained even when explaining about something as boring as online conversions. This book would be great for students in a Web site writing class or for someone who wants to make a Web site that is more user and reader friendly. I personally did know anything about Web writing before reading the book, but it has really inspired me to learn more and improve my skills. I have definitely been persuaded!

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly practical - To the authors: great job!.......2006-02-12

I found this book by browsing on Amazon, and it has been an incredible find. I am currently developing a website from scratch. I have bought all kinds of books to help me with this and this one is probably THE most useful. It contains many, many key ideas regarding what most matters in the content of a website. This is a book I keep reading and re-reading - A big thanks to the authors!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Increaseing Online Conversions.......2005-10-18

Persuasive Copywriting is a great companion to Call to Action, also by Bryan and Jeffrey Eisenberg. Portions of the information in this book were repeated in Action, but that does not make Persuasive any less valuable to web site owners and online marketers alike.

Much like my reading of Call, I have exhausted a highlighter underscoring important sections of information throughout the book. With sections covering writing considerations, techniques and writing for the web medium, Persuasive provides substantial tips and recommendations to make your copy stand out above the rest, and more importantly, be an effective sales tool.

As a bonus, there is an entire 50 page "afterword" all about understanding online conversion, which will help you better understand the conversion process, while providing useful tips on how to improve your site's conversion rates.

Anyone responsible for the content of their website should read this book and keep it close by. As the author's state, writing for your website is not a one-time process, but is all about tweaking and testing different formulas. Persuasive makes a great reference manual for the process of getting the most out of your web page content and squeezing out higher conversion rates from your visitors.

5 out of 5 stars An eye opener to those who think they know how to write good copy for the web.......2005-09-21

Before reading this book I considered myself a decent copyrighter, not excellent by any means, but decent. After reading this book (and their other book: Call to Action) I realized that I have no idea what I'm doing. Now I refer to each book on a weekly basis to be sure that I'm getting it right as I build websites for my clients. Reading these books has opened my eyes; referencing them keeps them open. Using just a few examples in these books I have been able to increase my registrations on several websites in just a few weeks.

4 out of 5 stars HOW TO WRITE WEB COPY THAT MOVES READERS TO ACTION.......2005-09-01

This book has already gotten rave reviews, but I'll add in my two-cents worth. It's been years since I've had a formal course in marketing, and even then, I wouldn't have learned about persuasive writing for the web. So this book was great for me, and I highly recommend it for anyone who is developing a personal or business website.

The whole book is a series of two- to three-page articles that can be read systematically. The authors are witty and passionate about teaching you how to write copy that converts visitors toward an action.

What's the single most important factor in getting your prospects to convert? Be relevant. "Relevance is a measure of how closely search results match the search request." If you follow the techniques the authors describe, your words won't waste the readers' time and will have impact.

The chapter, "Writing in Review" is a super-condensed Strunk and White's for the corporate writer. It covers all the basics. The authors conclude, "Stellar writing begs to be read. There is an urgency to the writing that keeps the reader going, even when that reader might be pressed for time."

Who isn't pressed for time? People on the internet are in a hurry. They need to find out a piece of information quickly. If your site is too flashy, slow to download, or your words don't make any sense, you'll lose their interest. They can go someplace else. This is what you DON'T want to happen.

The authors include great examples of site makeovers, showing you what works and what doesn't. For me, it was a great introduction to Nick Usborne, and I've gone on to read his book, NET WORDS. They also pointed me toward Ogilvy, another master of advertising.

I especially enjoyed the chapter on using poetic techniques to improve copy. "You won't snag or woo your customers with drabness; you'll woo them with skillful wordsmithing that penetrates their souls..." What follows includes techniques such as frosting, franking, seussing, and frameline magnetism; also, how to develop pace, rhythm, and poetic meter.

It's a short read, but full of insight. For anyone who ever wondered how business communication could be seen as a satisfying creative outlet, look no further than this book. (As you sing and dance your way merrily to the bank.)
