This is an easy to read summary of basic declarer techniques which we can all mess up on a regular basis. Recommended to every beginner who wishes to improve.

How can you survive a bad trump break? What sort of false card is most likely to mislead a defender? You'll find all the answers here, from David Bird, one of the world's leading bridge writers. In his usual clear and entertaining style, he explains how to tackle dozens of situations often mishandled by the average player.

Another winner from David Bird.......2007-01-28
This book of 52 bridge tips is for intermediate and better bridge players. The tips all relate to declarer play. Each tip is presented with an expanded explanation and several examples. Many are unique, and all are very useful. I highly recommended this book from a superb writer of bridge books.

The best intoduction.......2003-02-04
This is the best introduction to declarer's play. Not in depth, but you MUST know what's here before you can progress to the next level. After you are done you can read the introduction to defence by the same author. However, to get to expert level in declarer play and defence, you have to read "Card Play Technique" by Victor Mollo.

Solid book.......2006-03-09
Nothing earth shattering, but its a good book, as are many of Danny Roths books. It covers a number of common errors, but is not simplistic. Intermediate.
Customer Reviews:
Great beginner/low intermediate book.......2006-03-03
The book is fun to read, and has some quiz problems, rather than just showing examples.
I felt there was good overall coverage of a variety of topics, the basics, a little deductive reasoning, and even simple squeezes.
This is a good book for someone who is relatively new to bridge. If you have never read books on declarer play, then this would be a nice start.
After you read this try:
Card Play Made Easy - Klinger
Countdown to Winning Bridge - Bourke
Card Play Technique - Mollo
The Watson book may have been a classic in its time, but I think there are much better books available now.
Pretty good book.......2003-10-25
Watson's The Play of the Hand is far and away the number 1 bridge book to read if you are only going to read one bridge book. This book covers a lot of the same ground as Watson, so in a sense it isn't necessary (from my perspective). It doesn't cover with more breadth or depth than Watson. However, it still goes over much of the same material, and does a good job. And it is very readable (Watson may be a little to dry for some).
Excellent tips for handling the cards.......2003-05-02
Often humorous, well-written tips for handling the cards when you are the declarer. Sections on elementary and advanced plays and on special hands.
A classic.......2001-08-23
This is surely one of the best books on declarer play. Taught me alot and is a classic. I highly recommend it!
Simple elegant and entertaining book on play of the hand.......1999-06-04
Takes the reader from the basics of play up to the most complicated squeezes and endplays, and makes it all seem effortless. If you only buy one book on playing a bridge hand, this should be the one.
Book Description
This book provides all the guidelines to play as a declarer, the reasoning behind them, and explains when you should not follow the rules. By assuming only a minimum of knowledge, the authors have brought the subject within the reach of many players, and introduce the beginner gradually by placing the slightly trickier topics towards the end of the book.
Book Description
Every page of Masterpieces of Declarer Play offers a piece of wisdom on how to play as a declarer. It captures the essence of the author's extensive knowledge about and instinct for the game. It additionally features a refreshing and exciting collection of hands which will be appreciated by any bridge player. The advice is certain to improve your game while the classic hands will keep you turning the pages.

For Advanced players only.......2007-06-13
72 problems, broken into 3 groups. NT (simplest but not simple), Suit contracts, and Bonus. These problems are not easy, and go beyond the usual card reading, duck a trump to retin control, or Trump Coup. They involve something extra, such as testing the suit layouts and switching plans mid course from a ruff to a partial elimination - end play.
A couple of the hands required teh reader to make inferences about teh palcement of high cards based on the bidding that I think are not backed up by the facts. Not everyone would open a had containing Ace, King, King (10 HCP) with 4432 shape in 1st or 2nd seat. Thus teh inference that that player couldn't have a certain card really not valid. Same for a preempt (weak 2) nun-vulnerable against vulnerable. MANY players will bid a weak 2 with AJxxxx. They don't need anotehr outside king, white on red.
Some complex squeezes (I smelled them but couldn't figure out what to do), some hands where you try and scruch up an extra chance or two it increase the odds from 50% to 52% (I didnt think those hands were really taht important), but also some clever hands where you needed to figure out the shape and visualize certain possibilities.
Overall the book is a B-. Could be better, but still had some good hands.
If you are not Advanced you might not get so much out of it, though its still worth reading.

Great Photoshop book for photographers.......2007-10-04
I've been working with Photoshop for several years and have recently purchased this book. I think that the reader should have a working knowledge of Photoshop before using this book because it assumes you understand the basics. Ms. Eismann provides excellent instructions and downloadable photos on which to work. I highly recommend this book for photographers interested in retouching old photos or for those who want to extend their Photoshop techniques.
Very good book.......2007-09-11
I can only be enthusiastic when it comes to this book. The instructions and examples are very down to earth and clear. Just what I was looking for. As a result I then purchased Katrin's other book "Masking & Compositing" or as she says it should have been "Selecting, Masking & Compositing". I have purchased several books on Photoshop CS3 now and have read them all from cover to cover. Katrin's M&C book was written for CS - but I found it very instructive even when used with CS3.
Unbelievable Teacher.......2007-08-29
Katrin Eismann is nothing short of a genius. I have her DVD, and what she can do for someone serious about learning restoration and repair is second to none.
Always Learning.......2007-08-16
I took a one day Adobe Photoshop CS2 class. The instructor recommended this book for extra training. Photoshop is a program you can study for years and still have tons more to learn . This book gives you a great headstart. It's easy to follow and contains a great deal of usefull information. It's the kind of book you read cover to cover but it's also a good reference book. It's nice to be able to go at your own pace.
The most important Photoshop book I own.......2007-08-13
I have been in graphic design for 8 years, since Photoshop 5. I have purchased/read/borrowed every major book made for Photoshop from Peachpit and New Riders. From cheesy technique books, to instruction manuals, quick start guides, classroom in a books, and this is hands down, The most important Photoshop book I own.

Customer Reviews:
Good resource!.......2007-08-23
I have been using Photoshop Elements for quite some time and have many of the books printed on the subject. This is not as comprehensive as Barbara Brundage's, Scott Kelby's or Philip Andrews but it is excellent. A really great resource and good for a beginner to intermediate user. There are many ways of doing any job, certainly so with Photoshop, and Matt often uses a different approach; I've gotten a few 'tricks' different than shown by other authors. The instructions are easy to follow and an advantage (at least for me) is he does not rely on an enclosed DVD of his photo. I like to learn on mine! Definitely recommended!
Photoshop Elements 5 Restoration.......2007-07-20
Love this book, it's very detailed with step by step instructions for any lever user to understand and complete the intended task. I Highly Recommend this book for continued learing of this software.
Throw out your other digital retouching books!.......2007-06-18
I've taken online classes, read plenty of books, spent many hours tring to interpret instuctions on portrait retouching. I read Matt's book and was like "oh that's how you do it". The light came on and stayed lit through all his tutorials. Best thing... you don't have to read the whole book to learn Elements. Want to retouch eyes - just go to that portion of the book. No need to have read previous chapters/pages. People who have never used Elements can understand his instructions easily. Matt writes with wit and gets right to the point. I love this book and keep it right next to my key board for reference.
Matt's Best Work Yet..........2007-05-20
I'm a Photoshop User, I don't use Elements, so I was a bit put off given the focus was on Elements and frankly didn't know if anyone could come close to matching the worthiness of Katrin Eismann's seminal works on the same subject. But on the strength of Scott Kelby's (ostensibly Matt's boss at NAPP) recommendation on his blog, I went ahead and ordered a copy.
Suffice to say, I'm glad I did. From beginning to end, this book is SUBSTANTIVE. Matt has wisely decided to adopt Scott's bottom up approach... that is, Matt presents the issue at the beginning of a section and then shows you how to address the problem (so be forewarned, this is NOT an Elements primer) quickly and effectively. And of course, given that Elements is by and large a subset of its big brother, all the techniques described are easily applied in Photoshop.
In the end, Matt has done well enough that he too can sit on the same stage as Ms. Katrin Eismann (if you haven't read any of her stuff, you should, she is just flat brilliant). My copy is soon to be dogeared as I will be attempting to script as many of the techniques as I can... for those that I can't, I'm practicing the technique and then creating a spreadsheet with 2 columns; Problems & Solutions as there are just a TON of solutions in this work.
So, even if you are a Photoshop bigot like me, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. It is Matt's best work yet.
BY FAR THE BEST FOR A BEGINNER.......2007-03-22
Having used various photo editing programs with little effort, I decided to purchase PhotoShop Elements 5.0. Much to my distress, it has proven to be much more complicated than I had anticipated. Viewing the tutorials, and the help topics supplied with Elements did me little good. I am still unfamiliar with most of the Elements tools, but since I mainly use it for editing my photos, this book has been great! The book takes you step by step through the process of a specific project so that you do not have to learn what all the tools do until you need to use them. I would recommend it for anyone who uses Elements to edit their photographs - even the more advanced users. I wish all the manuals I have bought were written like this!
Book Description
* Covers the features users want most in restoration and retouching: scanning existing prints, correcting color and lighting problems, hiding dust and scratches, repairing holes in the image, improving focus, and printing and posting the retouched images
* VISUAL format uses step-by-step, full-color screen shot accompanied by minimal text to make learning quick and easy
* Simple-to-use features, top-quality photo editing tools, cross-platform capabilities, and an affordable price make Photoshop Elements 2 extremely popular with the booming market of digital camera users
* New elements of Windows XP are expected to produce even faster growth in the imaging market, with digital camera sales expected to triple over the next five years

Retouching and Restoration with Photoshop Elements 2.0.......2005-09-18
The book came as scheduled. Unfortunately it was left behind upon my evacuation from Katrina. I may not see it again
But I was very satisfied of your service.
Useful Introduction for beginners.......2004-07-24
I wish I had got this book immediately after purchasing Photoshop Elements 2. I know I would not have needed to buy a bunch of other books on PE2.
This books makes it easy to get familiar with the basic interface and features of PE2 and gets you up and going, gets you productive very quickly and painlessly. Photo editing is what I do most and this book is the simplest and easiest to follow.
Later on perhaps you might have to get a more advanced book, but I feel that as you practice what you learn in this book, your skills will evolve in accordance to your needs.
Lest you think this book deals only with simple basics, here I found the simplest and clearest explanations about Layers and how and when you should use them. Every page has full color graphics and hence the painless learning.
I recommend this book to anyone who is just starting with PE2. Adobe should ship this book in the box if they want users to have an easier experience with their software.
