Book Description
A single text that incorporates all of the theoretical principles and practical aspects of planar transmission line devices - since the early development of striplines, it has been sought by countless microwave engineers, researchers, and students. With the publication of Networks and Devices Using Planar Transmission Lines, the search for that one authoritative resource is over. This is more than just a handbook, much more than a theoretical treatment. It's the ideal integration of the theory and applications of planar transmission lines and devices. Striplines, microstrips, slot lines, coplanar waveguides and strips, phase shifters, hybrids, and more - the author examines them all. For each type of structure, his treatment is complete and self-contained, including: · Geometric characteristics · Electric and magnetic field lines · Solution techniques for the electromagnetic problem · Quasi-static, coupled modes, and full wave analysis methods · Design equations · Attenuation · Practical considerations Of particular interest is the author's comprehensive treatment of planar ferrimagnetic devices, such as phase shifters, isolators, and circulators, and three appendices dedicated to the theoretical aspects of ferrimagetism. Five other appendices provide thorough reviews of various theoretical concepts implicit in the body of the work, such as wave theory, the external properties of networks, and resonant circuits.

THE BLOOD WAR AWAITS!!!.......2004-08-08
Definitely a great fantasy epic and one of my personal favorites, The Blood Wars Trilogy-Blood Hostages, Abyssal Warriors, and Planar Powers, brings to life the story of Aereas and Nina, two cousins, and their adventures in the "multiverse" that is the World of Planescape. The books are so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another universe and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense.
The author has done a FANTASTIC job of both acquiring vast knowledge relevant to the Planes as well as presenting this material efficiently and successfully! His solid grasp of factual detail makes him very capable of providing the necessary background needed to carry out the very difficult task of writing Planescape novels, which is something often missing from the work of many Fantasy authors.
JR King has truly outdone himself and has presented us with a masterpiece of literature the likes of which we have seen only in JRR Tolkien's work and in authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends trilogies as well as RA Salvatore's Icewind Dale and Dark Elf Trilogies. Love, fiends, bravery, magic, swordfights and battles of epic proportion are all about. A great trilogy indeed and a "must read" along with Pages of Pain, sadly, the only other novel written in the Planescape setting.
Incredible Fantasy.......2002-08-17
Those familiar with Planescape will note that the book is not consistent with the setting--to which I say, so what?
This book should be judged on its ability to tell a story. And this story, spanning whole dimensions, heavens and hells, is beautifully detailed and well crafted.
The ability of any author to weave together not worlds but REALITIES is a testament to good writing. Anyone who likes books that force you to think about things like the nature of divinity, evil/good, reality, and other aspects of philosophy will enjoy this book, as well as those that like a beautifully and well told romance.
As a final note, let me say that the way the romance was handled was really well done. The female characters aren't sex objects even when sexually portrayed, and instead the sexual and romantic elements take you back to when you were an adolescent struggling with the issues the characters are.
The Planes shake with the raging of the Blood War.......2000-03-31
In this plane-shaking finale' to the Blood Wars trilogy, J. Robert King writes an excellent story. What started off as a planar romp by two prime-worlders turns into an all out crisis which involves mortals and deities alike. As the pendulum of power swings from the lawful baatezu to the chaotic tanar'ri and back, Aereas tries to find meaning for himself and his family amidst the backdrop of the everpresent Blood War. J. Robert King proves that he is an incredibly capable writer in the Planescape genre by writing a thouroughly comprehensible conclusion to a story whose setting is in a place that is thouroughly incomprehensible. Though not as suspenseful as "The Abyssal Warriors"(volume two of the Blood Wars trilogy), it definitely is a worthwhile read if you have begun the series. At the end of this book you will read an ending that will surely rock the foundations of the planes!

As much as 10% of the American economy, and perhaps more, is comprised of illegal "underground" enterprises, according to author and Atlantic Monthly correspondent Eric Schlosser. And while this segment is never discussed in the newspaper business pages, Schlosser tackles it with the same in-depth analysis and compulsive readability that made his Fast Food Nation a best seller. Reefer Madness spotlights marijuana, migrant labor, and pornography, three of the most thriving black market industries, and analyzes the often-tenuous place each holds in society as a whole. While each of the three could be the subject of its own book, Schlosser keeps his scope narrow by concentrating on the lives of the participants in the underground economy, especially Mark Young, an Indiana man given a life sentence for participating in a marijuana sale, and Ohio porn magnate Reuben Sturman. At just 21 pages, the treatment of migrant laborers in the California strawberry fields is dealt with more briefly but is just as compelling thanks to the first-person narrative of Schlosser's investigation. In telling these stories, which are both personal and universal, Schlosser deftly explores the manner in which his subjects are treated (and punished) compared to others in more above-ground ventures. Along the way, he asks hard questions as to what that treatment says about America. Schlosser writing is passionately opinionated, but this is no mere opinion piece: his perspective is amply supported by extensive research and clearly reasoned interpretation of data. His direct and forceful writing style makes the impact greater still. After reading Reefer Madness, readers are likely to be shocked, appalled, and flat-out bewildered by what's happening in the cracks and crevices of American business. --John Moe
Book Description
America's black market is much larger than we realize, and it affects us all deeply, whether or not we smoke pot, rent a risqu video, or pay our kids" nannies in cash. In Reefer Madness the best-selling author of Fast Food Nation turns his exacting eye on the underbelly of the American marketplace and its far-reaching influence on our society. Exposing three American mainstays pot, porn, and illegal immigrants Eric Schlosser shows how the black market has burgeoned over the past several decades. He also draws compelling parallels between underground and overground: how tycoons and gangsters rise and fall, how new techonology shapes a market, how government intervention can reinvigorate black markets as well as mainstream ones, and how big business learns and profits from the underground. Reefer Madness is a powerful investigation that illuminates the shadow economy and the culture that casts that shadow.

Reefer Madness - A Must Read.......2007-04-23
Reefer Madness is divided into three chapters. The first is about marijuana, the second is about cheap labor with illegal immigrants and the third is on [....]. The author writes this book based on the United States "black market". He gives somewhat of a biography on these 3 topics, which I feel is helpful for those, like myself, who are not aware of their history.
The first chapter is focused on marijuana. Schlosser provides interviews with many people who have had encounters with marijuana. Living in California, I have found it amazing to hear the penalties for marijuana use in other states. In chapter one for example, a man was arrested for possesion of 1.6 grams of marijuana, enough for a large joint. Living in Michigan, he received 14 months in jail. The second section is focused on cheap labor, or illegal immigrants in Guadalupe, California. Schlosser focuses on harvesting strawberries:the difficulty of it and hard labor that is being underpaid. The third and final section was the longest of the three. It focused on an underground [...] king Reuben Sturman.
I very muched enjoyed reading this book. If you liked Fast Food Nation, than Reefer Madness is a must read.
Don't Judge the Book By The Title!.......2007-04-16
"Reefer Madness", by Eric Schlosser is written in three main sections. There is a section on the underground marijuana trade, the migrant labor trade and the porn industry.
Unlike many reviewers, I think the author made a wonderful point. All three activities are illegal, yet they thrive and produce copious amounts of profits for the people involved. Often that profit is taken at the expense of the workers, and they do not share in this bounty. His theme is that if these activities were legalized, or regulated, they would produce income for the country at little harm to society.
I do think the author made a mistake in incorporating the three subjects together in the same book. While well written, the thread that holds the three together in tenuous, at best, and he would have made a better choice by examining each of the subjects, in more detail, in separate books. That is the reason I gave the book only three stars.
The writing is clear, and the research is unmistakably that of Eric Schlosser. I would recommend the book if you want to learn more abut each of these underground activates or if you are a fan of the author. It is also a good boo to be used to stir up discussion on any of the three subjects, or all three at once.
What an eye opener.......2007-01-10
This book makes some really great points about the underground economy and how much it affects this country.
Fascinating.......2006-11-30
Don't be fooled by the title. This is not some hippie counter culture drug book. It is a beautifully written scholarly examination of the underbelly of the American Society.
The main theme of the book is centered around the underground economy. The author argues, by examining the underground economy of any society, one can see a more accurate and telling picture of the society as a whole. Just as individuals have public and private personas that are often in conflict, so can a society. The book focuses on the American culture and legal system.
It is broken up into three essays: first an examination of the history of marijuana use and the war on drugs; second, an examination of the treatment of migrant workers; finally, an examination of pornography and obscenity laws.
The threads tying these seemingly disparate subjects are sometimes blatant, sometimes subtle, but always telling. By examining how the American society deals with these issues, one can draw clear corollaries to better understand how we deal with other controversial issues facing our nation including abortion, abuse of government powers, privacy, the war, etc.. It is the examination of the rationality (or lack there of) of our policies regarding these three topics, and the ethics with which those policies are implemented, that we are left with a scathing commentary on the seemingly schizophrenic nature of the American culture and value system.
Putting a magnifying glass up to American society........2006-06-11
What are three of the perpetual hot button issues of 21st century American politics? Commercialized sex, illegal drugs and cheap labor would probably common choices of many citizens. Eric Schlosser examines the magnitude, origins, visibility, commonality and manifestations of these three mainstays of the American scene.
The book is divided into three chapters, each dedicated to one of these hot-button topics. The chapter on commercialized sex examines the history of prostitution, pornography, and the recent spread of nudie bars and topless bars in the USA over the last 100 years plus. Schlosser examines the origins of peep shows, the first girlie magazines pre-Cold War, goes over the founding of Playboy and Penthouse, and the current spread of pornography over the Internet. The chapter on drugs examines the history of marijuana primarily, with some side notes on the meth plague, cocaine, and other drugs to have swept thru the American street scene. The chapter on cheap labor examines migrant and illegal labor including child labor and sweathouse labor. Both industrial and agricultural labor are included. This chapter is a natural extension of Schlosser's first book: Fast Food Nation, in that it covers the practices of slaughterhouses and farms, and extends into factories not related to food.
Overall, a good book and worthy reading. Anyone in high school or above should find this book accessible, and enjoyable.

Customer Reviews:
serviceable.......2006-10-21
This is a very solid, serviceable, non-technical introduction to some of the more popular principles of macro- and microeconomics, designed for the general reader. There are no graphs, and no math required.
The subject matter is frequently surprising and Coyle's writing style is engaging.
Each chapter tackles a different subject: infrasructure, inflation, defense spending, etc., and throughout each chapter, critical terms such as "liquidity trap," "rational expecatations," "human capital," etc. are boldfaced and defined in the back of the book.
Meaning that, despite is salacious title, the book would serve nicely as ancillary reading for a basic survey class on economics -- something to breathe a little life into those charts and graphs.
I should warn you about two things:
1. The title is misleading, at best. Presumably this was a directive on the part of the publisher, in a bid to sell more copies? The title seems to promise all sorts of lurid delights inside, but such aren't really delivered on. The closest you come is chapter 1, which analyzes the economic motives behind the prostitution industry, and chapter 2, which does likewise for the illegal drug trade. The overwhelming remainder of the book is quite mainstream and non-controversial.
2. The woman writing this is British, so most of her examples (about monopolies, laws, failed companies, etc.) come from United Kingdom examples that North American readers might not be familiar with.
Good book for the rest of us.......2006-07-09
Coyle's book offers a realistic look of how econ works. It's a great read to see how many of the popular government programs are in fact pork barrelling and not, in fact, in the best interest of society. I find the info contained in the novel useful and valid and the utilization of common themes (i.e. farm subsidies, national defence, sports teams, etc) help the reader understand.
exactly what it claims to be.......2005-10-21
While it isn't the most fascinating book I've ever read, this lives up to its title. It is an unusual, but very effective, introduction to basic economic concepts for people who would rather die than crack open an economics textbook. The choice of real-world examples and the generally humorous tone make the learning painless. I skimmed the glossary before I started and was intimidated by the quantity and complexity of some of the terms that were used, but by the time I had finished reading the book and took another look at the glossary, I found I was comfortable with the terms and concepts. Highly recommended.
Entertaining introduction to Economics.......2005-10-09
I am enjoying this book as part of a class at college and it makes Economics fun and interesting through real world examples that grab one's attention.
The first step to make decisions.......2005-08-08
Why we make decisions? Because we have limited resources! If you want to understand everything that happened or will happen, read this book.

Book Description
The United States Supreme Court is on the verge of overturning Roe v. Wade. When it does, that decision may be as important as the Dred Scott decision a century and a half ago. During the confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas the focus was on the constitutional right to privacy and abortion. No legal concept has been more controversial and has had such a significant impact on the lives of millions of Americans. This book provides an understandable overview of the Supreme Court decisions concerned with privacy issues such as sex, drugs, abortion, and the right to die. The legal evolution of the constitutional right to privacy is explored with every significant Supreme Court decision explained along the way. This book begins with an overview of the legal history that has led to the development of a constitutional right to privacy. The relationship between morality and law are presented from the Hittites to the Puritans. The impact of the ideas of philosophers such as Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau, and Mill are presented along with an overview of the concepts of Natural Law and Natural Rights. The development of the right to privacy in American Common law is presented. The important Supreme Court decisions on privacy are discussed in detail from Griswold to Roe v. Wade.

Description:
The relationship between substance use and adolescent sexual activity is an important one, and extensive literature has shown that substance use is positively associated with adolescent sexual behaviors. While this is true, causality from substance use to risky sexual behaviors is difficult to establish, as it is likely that an adolescent's sexual behavior and substance use depend on a set of personal and social behaviors, many of which are unmeasured. Researchers must thus devise a credible empirical strategy in order to overcome this omitted variable bias. Using the first waves of the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health and the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, we call into question recent methods used to determine causality. Despite attempts to determine the causal relationship between substance use and sexual behavior, the nature of the relationship remains unknown.
