Book Description

These pages capture a thousand years of medieval women's visionary writing, from late antiquity to the 15th century. Written by hermits, recluses, wives, mothers, wandering teachers, founders of religious communities, and reformers, the selections reveal how medieval women felt about their lives, the kind of education they received, how they perceived the religion of their time, and why ascetic life attracted them.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A classic for both content and commentary.......2001-09-21

This book is THE starting place for those seeking to understand the variety of women's religious writings and experiences in the medieval west. The chosen texts are very good themselves, and Petroff's commentary is very helpful to modern readers seeking to understand a sometimes alien discourse. I use this as a textbook in religious studies and women's history courses for university freshmen and sophomores and get consistently good comments from my students about the book.

4 out of 5 stars Typical repertoire book.......2007-03-19

It's the typical opening book. Not too much material, not too deep analysis, but a good job. Of course this book is from white point of view, as the title tell us.
Kotronias go on just analyzing games in a kind of repertoire tree, but the analysis are good.
I've just prepared myself for a game against a 2000 fide player. I have spent just 3 hours on the main line after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nf3 Nxe4 5.d4 d5 6.Bd3 Bd6 7.0-0 0-0 8.c4 c6 (i knew my opponent played this line, but i didn't know how he play against 9.cxd5). In the game at move 13 my opponent went out of theory playing a weak move, i entered a clear advantage position, knowing the basic ideas of the line better then black.
(Eventually i didn't won since it was a team game and the draw was ok for us.)

Book Description

The stories collected by Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm in the early 19th century reflected life as known to the German people of the time - fantastic, yet often unpredictable & pernicious. Patriotic folklorists, they began their collection of tales with the intent of preserving the endangered German oral tradition from a Napoleonic rule intent on suppressing local culture.

From their earliest release & translation, conservative parents & ecclesiastics disparaged the tales for their vestigial, raw, Gothic content & the brothers & a myriad of editors began to soften them to demure morality & sweetness to make appeal to the upper classes what began as earthy peasant fare. This is no such revision, sanitized of objectionable material; these are the grimmest.

The tales themselves are only part of the story of this volume, which is lushly illustrated with almost a hundred pieces from contemporary artists Terry Beal, Benchacco, Jon Ferril, Luc Hebert, Kelly Levy, Kathryn McLaughlin, Karen Petroff, Katy Rose & Cyrus Rua which perfectly complement the translations, lending movement and reality to the stories, transcending and transforming what most would think of as mere faerie tales.

1 out of 5 stars Almost a book.......2007-05-09

This is not so much a book as a puffed up leaflet. The text is huge, and the pages are filled with what appear to be doodles done by bored ninth graders. There is no discussion or context. It is a tiny collection stories and nothing more. Shrink its margins and text to more normal size, cut the art, Cut back on white space and you ind yourself looking at maybe twenty pages. I'm being giving when I say that.

A great collection that takes the stories in unexpected directions. Loved the artwork and the weird takes.

5 out of 5 stars "Fairy-stories are not necessrily for children".......2005-03-27

When I was a kid, I had that rather dog-eared, whitish book, with lots of fairy-tales and almost no illustrations. Yet I loved it, as I did the tales of The Grimm brothers.

Then I grew up, went to University and little by little, the name Grimm no longer reminded me of pretty maidens, kept in tall towers by ugly old witches or of handsome princes, coming to rescue them (or rather sneak into the maidens' room;)), but of language origins, Germanic sound shifts and linguistics.

And then I chanced to come across The Grimmest of Grimm and all of a sudden I was brought back all those years ago, to the days when I was reading about the boy playing at bowls with ghosts' skulls (only to finally learn what it is like to have the shivers, when he got himself a wife;)

The Grimmest of Grimm is a book created with lots of love; a book with a heart and a life of its own; a book which, with the simple way in which the tales are told and its plentiful illustrations, is suitable as much for kids, who hear them for the first time, as it is for adults, who have grown tired of reading books, written in a "language, which makes up in obscurity what it lacks in style".

The Grimmest of Grimm is a feast not only for the mind, but for the eyes, as well; a read which carries one over to a different time and place, a gateway to the dream-world of childhood, in which ghosts and spirits walk the earth and where everything is fresh and new; a world where good still wins over evil and virtue triumphs over vice.

Book Description

Raffaele La Capria creates a portrait of Capri that begins in the time of Ulysses and moves to our present complex and hectic reality, and composes an elegy for a Nature blasted by human negligence and error. Americans have now been visiting Capri for many years, and La Capria’s book will offer much to newcomers to the island that they would not otherwise have at their disposal, for his slim volume is a guidebook of a special kind, something like a novel and a local Italian guide. Capri has had a long history as a place of retreat, of sensual license, and of unparalleled natural beauty. Without running through the usual list of sights, La Capria gives his reader the sensation of having peered beneath each stone, and of giving an appreciation of what such a place has done to others, some of whom, once under Capri’s spell, gave their lives over to their dreams.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Book .......2007-07-06

Capri and No Longer Capri is not a guide book, nor is it a history of the island: it is the reflections of the author, novelist Raffaele La Capria, on his long relationship with Capri. Mr. La Capria has a summer home on Capri but has visited the island, on and off, since he was a teenager. The book consists of chapters that were, for the most part, published elsewhere first. The book begins with Capri's past with chapters on the imperial period, the Blue Grotto, Fersen and the creation of his famous villa, Krupp and his sad end and how Norman Douglas and other writers related their experiences. These are informative chapters that provide the author's perspective and relate his own experiences. The chapter on the Blue Grotto is marvelously descriptive and Mr. La Capria provides his own experiences on visiting the famous tourist site as he waits for all the boats to depart so he can have the place to himself.

The concluding chapters of the book relate the changes that have come to Capri over the years; the hoards of tourists that descend on the island in huge groups, the speedboats and huge yachts that anchor off the island and spread their garbage into the sea. More serious is the disappearance of the fish for pollution and over fishing. This is so serious that sea gulls can not longer feed themselves from the sea any longer. It is the consequences of these unwelcome changes that Mr. La Capria is most eloquent about: the beauty of Capri slowly being eroded by over development and environmental degradation. I have visited Capri twice with my wife, going by ferry to the island and preferring to see the natural beauty of the place instead of shopping. It had always seemed to us that Capri was a small paradise but from this book one understands that this is merely an appearance and that environmental disaster is also looming over such magnificent places.

This is a very well written book that has been translated from Italian and it offers a different perspective of Capri that a visitor is usually exposed to. The book will appear most to people who have visited the island since I doubt that it would make much sense to someone who has not been there and knows nothing about the places and people described. For those who have seen Capri this is an invaluable book that also serves as a warning: we are destroying the places we love and need to be aware that our actions, such as uncontrolled building, over fishing of the seas and polluting the land an sea all come with a terrible cost.

        Book Description

Opening a window onto a long-neglected world of women's experience, this text features eleven essays that examine the writings of medieval women mystics from England, France, Germany, Italy, and the Low Countries, providing close readings of a number of important texts from the viewpoint of different literary theories. Surveying various styles of hagiographical writing, the author offers ground-breaking scholarship on a broad range of topics such as how medieval holy women may have appeared to their contemporaries, medieval antifeminism, comparisons between earlier and later Christian mystical writing, the relationship between male confessors and female penitents in the Middle Ages, and the process by which these extraordinary women produced their work. For courses in religious, medieval, or women's studies, this unique text fills a conspicuous gap in an important and fascinating field of literature.

"The computer world is like an intellectual Wild West, in which you can shoot anyone you wish with your ideas, if you're willing to risk the consequences. " --from Hackers & Painters: Big Ideas from the Computer Age, by Paul Graham

We are living in the computer age, in a world increasingly designed and engineered by computer programmers and software designers, by people who call themselves hackers. Who are these people, what motivates them, and why should you care?

Consider these facts: Everything around us is turning into computers. Your typewriter is gone, replaced by a computer. Your phone has turned into a computer. So has your camera. Soon your TV will. Your car was not only designed on computers, but has more processing power in it than a room-sized mainframe did in 1970. Letters, encyclopedias, newspapers, and even your local store are being replaced by the Internet.

Hackers & Painters: Big Ideas from the Computer Age, by Paul Graham, explains this world and the motivations of the people who occupy it. In clear, thoughtful prose that draws on illuminating historical examples, Graham takes readers on an unflinching exploration into what he calls "an intellectual Wild West."

The ideas discussed in this book will have a powerful and lasting impact on how we think, how we work, how we develop technology, and how we live. Topics include the importance of beauty in software design, how to make wealth, heresy and free speech, the programming language renaissance, the open-source movement, digital design, internet startups, and more.

And here's a taste of what you'll find in Hackers & Painters:

"In most fields the great work is done early on. The paintings made between 1430 and 1500 are still unsurpassed. Shakespeare appeared just as professional theater was being born, and pushed the medium so far that every playwright since has had to live in his shadow. Albrecht Durer did the same thing with engraving, and Jane Austen with the novel.

Over and over we see the same pattern. A new medium appears, and people are so excited about it that they explore most of its possibilities in the first couple generations. Hacking seems to be in this phase now.

Painting was not, in Leonardo's time, as cool as his work helped make it. How cool hacking turns out to be will depend on what we can do with this new medium."

Andy Hertzfeld, co-creator of the Macintosh computer, says about Hackers & Painters: "Paul Graham is a hacker, painter and a terrific writer. His lucid, humorous prose is brimming with contrarian insight and practical wisdom on writing great code at the intersection of art, science and commerce."

Paul Graham, designer of the new Arc language, was the creator of Yahoo Store, the first web-based application. In addition to his PhD in Computer Science from Harvard, Graham also studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence.

            Customer Reviews:

            4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-09-07

Paul Graham is very clever (and rich - is that relevant?), however light also bends around his ego. Whether the sum of these qualities is positive is not absolutely clear to me.

If you want to read the best thing that he has written, you might be better served by his book on advanced Lisp programming, which is a monument anybody can be proud of - it comes close behind SICP on my personal list.

And, if you do read this book, I suggest you also look at 'The Science of Art' by Martin Kemp, which gives another perspective on the maybe slightly overweighted metaphor of the title, and the relation between theory and practice it implies.

2 out of 5 stars Airport mall book.......2007-08-11

In spite of the strong desire to punch the author in the face after finishing the book, there are many great truths inside. Basically why is it that most people think salaries on the same position should be the same if work results differ in orders of magnitude.

Also it's funny to see an ultra-capitalist criticize the western decadent corporate structure. It's The Market for Lemons all over the place.

Don't expect to find anything useful to make a dot com startup on this book. It's all anecdotes from his experience and his quasi-religious views. It's more rhetoric on Lisp than business.

As another reviewer said, read first his online essays before diving into this.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but don't believe too much.......2007-07-29

I was entertained and greatly appreciated the view of the author but the many times I completely disagreed (due to very substantiated reasons) made me skeptical of several ideas of the author. But, the reasons for him holding those views is, in and of itself, interesting. He does have several good and controversial ideas and his experiences are quite valuable to read. Most of the time, I found myself flying high with him as he stated things that really need to be said which ran against conventional thought. Other times, I found myself raising my eyebrows in bewilderment. After all, it really is a book about his thoughts so take it as such. His book, his soapbox.

The book reads well but really trails off towards the end. I found myself finishing the book just so I could say I was through with it. The opening chapters are quite entertaining. Read a few chapters that you find interesting and leave it at that.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but dont expect to learn much.......2007-07-20

This is a nice little, light book that you can read after a hard day's coding and yet keep smiling. The language and style of writing is really good and makes reading quiet effortless. The topics being probed are of course bound to make you think. I would say, read this collection of essays to help you ponder further, but dont take the opinions too seriously.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-06-27

As an insider in the development world I never seen such a blunt and clear view of this world. I of course do not agree on all perspectives of the author's claims but I think that it was put on paper in a very skillfull and interesting way.

            Highly recommended !!!
