5 out of 5 stars More than seventy 'kid friendly' math games.......2007-05-10

Featuring more than seventy 'kid friendly' math games, puzzles, and projects from all over the world, "Math Games & Activities From Around The World" by Claudia Zaslavsky is 160 pages of fun, math skill developing exercises that will have enormous appeal for children ages 9 and older. Children will engage in the use of geometry to design game boards, probability to analyze games of chance, logical thinking to devise gaming strategies, and more. From Tic-tac-toe (first played in ancient Egypt), to Nine Men's Morris (once played in England with living pieces), and Mankala - the oldest and most popular game in the world. From building a model pyramid to working maze-like African network puzzles, "Math Games & Activities From Around The World" is a unique and welcome supplemental addition to school math and logic skill development curriculums. Also very highly recommended for classroom and homeschool curriculums is Claudia Zaslavsky's companion book, "More Math Games & Activities From Around The World" featuring seventy more games, puzzlers and projects ranging from Mongolian 'Jirig', to Sudan's 'Little Goat Game', to the game of 'Achi' from Ghana.

5 out of 5 stars A little math treasure to keep..........2003-02-24

This is a very detailed book for ages 9 and up. It consists of games that correlate with some of today's districts standards. We have Native American patterning, Symmetry from Japan, Geometry from Kenya, Probability games from Mexico and Hawaii, and board games anywhere from China, Korea, and New Zealand.

This is a recomended book for those teacher or parents that want to make math a little more exicitng for children. Mathematics is not only about learning it from a textbook, but also from hands on experiences through games and visual aids. This books touched upon the idea that it's okay to make math fun for you and a child.

One or two games in this collection dates back about 3,300 years ago in Egyptian times. Symmetry is learned from making masks and faces from the U.S. and Native Americans. Islamic "POLYGONS" are also found in this book. You can learn to make "Hopi Flat Baskets" that dates back about 1,500 years ago when baskets were found in the ruins of Anasazi homes. These baskets show children about symmetry and design. Repeated patterns from Alaska show children that we don't only have patterns in designs but, we also have patterns in every day items all around us.

This is an excellent book that lets children view math from the fun and creative perspective. Teachers can have fun while teaching district standards and make sure that our youth isn't bored with the "textbook" syndrome as Harry Wong puts it. We need to show children that mathematics deals with every day life and that it doesn't only appear on the pages of a text every five days. Mathematics is the necessary means for survival in our complex and equative society. This books let's us step outside of the "textbook syndrome" and let children explore the "real-world" experiences.

Product Description

by Anne Akers Johnson National Parenting Publications Award After the unprecedented success of Cat's Cradle , Klutz was snowed under with requests for more string figures. In response, they are proud to present String Games from Around the World , a collection of seven brand-new (yet ages old) string games, introduced by seven real-live kids from seven incredibly diverse cultures. Illustrated with gorgeous full-color photographs, watercolor paintings and instructional art, String Games comes complete with the tie-dyed string loop, natch.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fun String Figures.......2007-06-10

This book in right in line with the Klutz tradition. Makes things simple and fun. It is clear and gives you good directions and a little background on each figure. They are pretty simple figures. I think it is relatively expensive if you compute the price per figure. The binding is particularly durable and the pages are heavy duty. The type of binding lets the pages lie flat which is very nice when your fingers are entwined in a figure. Other books in my collection have the regular glue binding and keeping them open can be a challenge.

5 out of 5 stars Great little book.......2004-10-28

My daughter loves this along with the first one that was published. Hours of fun!

4 out of 5 stars Great pictures, fun string figures--a good sequel.......2000-09-19

This book is a sequel to Johnson's "Cat's Cradle", which contained five string figures. This book has seven more, from around the world--Paraguay, Australia, Ghana, the U.S. (a Navajo string figure), New Guinea, Alaska, and Ireland. Each is accompanied by photographs of the children who taught Johnson the figures, and good detailed diagrams of how to make the figures.

The presentation is more spectacular than in "Cat's Cradle", but when you get down to it the figures are what counts, and these are no more fun than the first book. In fact, they're a little more difficult to learn. We bought this for our five year old daughter, who'd enjoyed the first book (despite one of the patterns being too difficult for her); she found this one much less interesting. I think an older child would like the extra details about the children in the different countries, however.

I'd recommend that you buy "Cat's Cradle" first. If you or the child you buy it for enjoys it, this is a good follow up gift, but it doesn't have anything as easy to learn and fun as Cup and Saucer or Witch's Broom, from the first book.

4 out of 5 stars Cat's Cradle.......2000-09-03

I think the book had good instructions and it helped me understand how to make 4 or 5 new string figures. It was easy to read, and the pictures were very good. I would recommend this book for beginners who are learning to make string figures.

5 out of 5 stars A very good book.......2000-01-03

This book is an excellent string game book. It has easy to read instructions and wonderful pictures. The flying bird, one of the games, the bird flies from hand to hand! With the mosquito, you can smack it between you hands and it disapears! An excellent book, I would recommend it to everyon who it interesting in string games.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good puzzles .......2007-02-12

My 8 year old daughter loves this book. On her first read through she said she only solved 1 or 2 of them herself, but she has since enjoyed reading them aloud to my husband and I to see if she can stump us. I've missed at least one, and we haven't read them all yet.
Based on my daughter's experience, I'd recommend this for ages 7 - 12. (or older, as I said, I got stumped too!)

5 out of 5 stars Helps in Thinking Skills.......2004-09-02

Really a neat book, not only for kids, but for adults, too. Helps to sharpen thinking skills, while learning a little about the folklore of other countries and cultures.

5 out of 5 stars something for everyone.......2003-02-17

I just ordered several of these books to give as birthday gifts for my 9 year old daughter's friends, but I had to read through it before we gave them away. Now I may need to purchase one for our house! The stories were fun, interesting and challenging, but not so difficult that my daughter couldn't figure some out for herself. I agree with the previous review that it makes one "think outside the box" - and is a fun and valuable asset to any library!

5 out of 5 stars Logic outside the box - made fun.......2000-09-08

This book consists of folktales, very concisely told, that in some sense are a riddle, a puzzle, a play on words ... These stories are presented as problems to solve.

A major strength of the book is the variety of sources of the tales - Tibetan, Aesop, Armenia, India, Grimm brothers, Ethiopian, Japan; in fact many of the stories could have come from any of a number of cultures. The illustrations add to the interest of the book for its intended audience.

The only weakness is that in only one case does it offer alternative answers. For example, in filling a room perfume works as well as light; if children are reading the book independently, they may not have the confidence to recognize that their answer is a clever as the one given in the text.

The stories are fun - parents and children should enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous folktales that present a challenge and a smile........1999-09-13

This is a wonderful book that combines mathematical reasoning and logic with fascinating folktales from around the world. A book that delights kids as well as adults.

        Book Description

This book stresses three contemporary topics which are important to any person working with young children: multiculturalism, creativity, and cooperative learning. Glenn Kirchner, one of today's leading experts in elementary physical education, has collected games from all over the world and compiled them in a beautifully illustrated book that will serve as a resource for teacher educators and in-service teachers alike. This edition is the result of a thirteen year collaborative project conducted with hundreds of teachers in fifty participating countries. The first part of the book features traditional games played by children on six continents. Although many of these games are unique to a given culture, some are modified versions of the same game, demonstrating the universality of children's games while introducing students and teachers to cultural variations. The second and third parts of the book depart from the traditional games and focus on new games invented by children from the fifty participating countries. Almost half of these are cooperative games. Two chapters explaining how to guide children to invent their own games will enable teachers to use Kirchner's methods with their own students. For elementary school physical education teachers or sports and recreation enthusiasts.

          Book Description

This is the first comprehensive introduction to Support Vector Machines (SVMs), a new generation learning system based on recent advances in statistical learning theory. Students will find the book both stimulating and accessible, while practitioners will be guided smoothly through the material required for a good grasp of the theory and its applications. The concepts are introduced gradually in accessible and self-contained stages, while the presentation is rigorous and thorough. Pointers to relevant literature and web sites containing software make it an ideal starting point for further study.

4 out of 5 stars More for mathematicians than computer scientist.......2006-09-20

This book introduces the concepts of kernel-based methods and focuses specifically on Support Vector Machines (SVM). It is hard to read and a good background in mathematic is clearly needed. The book has a strong emphasis on SVM starting from the very first line of text. Concepts are well explained, although equations are not clear. The notation doesn't facilitate the reading at all. The book covers linear as well as kernel learning. The kernel trick is well described. It is easy to understand ideas behind SVM while reading the corresponding chapter. Finally a small chapter on SVM applications is proposed. Unfortunately, it only contains typical SVM applications (i.e. standard problems).

I think this book is good if you:

          * Have a strong mathematical background
          * Work in the specific domain of SVM (or kernel-based methods in general)
          * Want to write a research paper about SVM and need the correct notations

However, this book is NOT intended for people who:

          * Don't like to read theorems, corollaries and remarks
          * Are not interested in reading hundreds of proofs

This is my personal opinion as a computer scientist: this book is definitely written for mathematicians.

          4 out of 5 stars A little dry........2006-01-09

The book is a little dry at times. Also, I didn't get a very clear idea of how to select kernel functions, which seems pretty important.

1 out of 5 stars Not even close to an intro..........2004-03-21

Oh Puhleeeezzzzz... How is your vector math??? Remember your linear algebra well? Do you have a background in SVM's? Intuitively able to suck out of thin air the meaning of the Gamma co-efficient as applied to svm's?? You've read all the background papers and remember your formal logic???? No?? too bad..your out of luck..

This book is more aptly titled an Introduction to the Formalisms of SVM's. If your a software engineer trying to implement one of these, forget it.. Be nice if they put that quadratic algorthim psuedocode into something more readable than greek symbology..

If you are trying to build one of these engines, then this book is of absolutely no help, unless you have a background in machine learning and have read all the papers on SVM's. If you can decompose the math into code in your head, then you might find it entertaining... What I don't get is how all the rest of these reviewers can give such "glowing praise" for this book and have it be so completely worthless as an introduction... makes me think some of these are shills..

Bottom line is, if your trying to code a svm, this book will not help. If your trying to understand how to implement a svm, this book will not help. If you are trying to understand how an svm works, this book will not help. If you want to know the mathematical basis for SVM's and like that presentation.. this is the book for you..

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2003-11-19

I just happened to read the reviews on the book on Support vector machines by Nello Cristianini and John Shawe-Taylor. Could not resist adding my own comments about the book. Excellent book. I plan to use the book for the course on "Fundamentals of computer aided engineering" that I teach at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL).

5 out of 5 stars This is it !.......2001-08-31

The book is just great. The appendix on algorithms could have more explanations. Also the application section is a short. It would have been more usuful to take one of these applicaitons and describe it in details. But all in all, the book is excellent.
