Book Description

In paperback, the book that touched off the treasure hunt of the century-with a full explanation of the Masquerade Riddle.

For three years, treasure-seekers from both sides of the Atlantic sought a fabulous golden hare buried by artist Kit Williams. Williams had devised an unusual guide to the hare's whereabouts: a multilayered riddle that he told in a fairy tale of his own imagining, and presented in dazzling, cryptic, paintings.

When the hare was finally unearthed by a British engineer, many were left wanting to know exactly how the clues worked out. In this paperback reprint of Masquerade, the author supplies an illustrated preface that pulls the strings, finds the goal, and points to what's important: the village chemist's daughter, the atomic weight of the elements, the shadows of the equinox, Henry VIII's first wife. Williams explains how numbers and colors correspond to the intricate ballet, and how the eyes really do see the answer. And of course, here are the magical pages that tell the tale of Jack the hare, and his journey to the sun. They are still there to discover, ponder, rediscover. And understand at last.

Suitable for ages 7 and up. 73,000 copies in print.

5 out of 5 stars Masquerade.......2001-10-21

I first learned of this by reading a book with information on treasure hunts. It told the answers, and I thought, "How hard could this be?" As soon as I could, I checked Masquerade out from the library. I read it, tried to put the answers with the pages, and it was hard! I would definitely recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars kit williams and the golden hare................2001-10-17

masquerade caused a frenzy when first published in england. kit williams book was the first ever 'real' treasure hunt, with a 'real' prize buried somewhere in england. masquerade is no longer available, which is a shame, but, this little book not only covers the orignal story, but explains the answers to the puzzle of masquerade. this is a wonderful book for all ages to love and enjoy. buy it!!

5 out of 5 stars For the Treasure Hunter in us all........2001-02-16

I received the original hardback book as a gift when it first came out and spent hours and hours picking out all the clues that were hidden in the text, boarders and luscious illustrations. I wanted that beautiful, detailed hare pendant with it's terra cotta case so bad. I never figured that living in America I would actually be able to find it. I came a lot closer with just a guess about the clue that's on the second page than I ever thought I would.

One of my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Not just for kids!.......2000-12-21

Ever since first reading this book in my local library in 1980, I'd been itching to discover the location of the buried Masquerade jewel--not for the prize itself, which was found long ago, but for the sport of deciphering Kit Williams' paintings, which contained clues. Driven mad by the author's early assertion that it was "so simple, a ten year old could solve it," I worked at it periodically in the years that followed and finally caved in when I saw that amazon.com sold a version that contained the solution. I purchased the book merely to end my twenty years of suffering.

How close did I come to solving it? Not nearly as close as I would have liked--as an American, I have very little knowledge of England's geography (mandatory to solving the puzzle, despite the previous disclaimers). I did have part of the solution correct; I knew the letters that bordered each painting spelled out locations, but the method was not as simple as the author pretended. Needless to say, I feel much better now that I know this.

That having been said, let me conclude by stating that the story of Jack Hare's journey is enjoyable, the paintings are absolutely exquisite and the mystery is still intriguing, whether the jewel is still in the ground or not. I recommend it to anyone who loves puzzles--just be prepared to work hard at the solution; it's not easy!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2000-09-07

The illustrations are great, plus it is very fun to try to solve all of the riddles. I had no idea that the jewl was found until i got the book, and my family and I never figured out the answer, but I did find all of the rabbits. The origanal book is very good, and if you have one, you should hold on to it, so in 40 years you can go to the Antiques Road Show, and get lots of money!!!

A full-page photograph is used to ask children what they do with various items (a comb, a suitcase, a mailbox etc). The adjoining page gives children four possible answers, mostly silly. Turning the page again reveals the correct answer with another full-page photograph. The photographs are of clear quality and the children presented are obviously having fun. The children listening to this book will also have fun anticipating and giving the answers. A good choice for storytime, but expect some yelling and excitement as the children yell out the answers.

I found that this trivia book was enjoyable. It challenges you to try to remember the smaller details in the chronicles.( yes you must think). It is arranged by book, so if you haven't read them all yet, you can still stimulate your brain with it. The only downside is that it wasn't much of a challenge if you can remember mostly the little details from the chronicles. But then again, I've read them at least five times... IT's an excellent trivia book though, and a great one to add to your Narnian collection.

            Book Description

This is the world's bestselling and most comprehensive reference book on telecom, data communications, networking, computing and the Internet, with over 675,000 copies sold. Featuring 500 new terms plus hundreds more updated and expanded entries, the 21st edition of Newton's Telecom Dictionary weighs in at over four times larger than any other telecom and IT dictionary, and includes wireless, broadband, VoIP, RIFD, and fiber optics terms.

Packed with over 22,400 definitions, it explains technical concepts in non-technical language that anyone can understand. It's used by more leading technology companies for training and employee orientation than any other text.

Four bonus sections include: Harry Newton's favorite money-saving tips for telecom, computing, and more; what happens when telecom services are suddenly free?—a vision for this business in the 21st century; how you should orient your precious telecom budget in today's tight times; disaster recovery planning to protect your computing and telecom resources.

Most dictionaries are updated every ten to twenty years. Not this one. Newton updates this dictionary every day and issues a new, expanded, improved and updated edition every ear. This edition is current as of Spring 2005.

If you are in the telecom or IT industry or just want to familiarize yourself with terminology and practices relating to both, YOU MUST OWN THIS BOOK! A lot of the definitions are understandably technical but Harry Newton manages to be very informative AND amusing with his casual, down-to-earth writing style.

Used it for a class, but some of the definitions in this book were out of this world. Made for a good laugh. If you have it, look up flasher...

5 out of 5 stars Everything but the "Kitchen Sink".......2006-11-10

I needed a reference for Telecommunications that I could reference and fall back on while preparing for a Civil Service test to keep my job. Invaluable would be the word I would use. You may never need to use more then 2% of this book but what you need is almost garanteed to be in it if it has to do with Telecom.

5 out of 5 stars The BOOK for Telecommunications.......2006-10-07

This should be a mandatory book for anyone working in the telecommunications industry. Not only is it comprehensive, but the explanations are direct, easily understood and sometimes humorous. Anyone who uses "oxymoron" in an explanation gets my vote.

5 out of 5 stars What if Daniel Webster had an irrepressible sense of humor?.......2006-08-26

I have been buying regularly updated editions of Newton's Telecom Dictionary for fifteen years now and will continue to do so as long as Harry keeps 'em coming.

I'll admit that once in a while an obscure TLA or FLA (4 and 5 Letter Acronyms) will sneak beneath Harry's radar but it doesn't happen very often. Especially when he is so willing to research tips sent to him by his loyal readers!

I have found this dictionary to be indispensible in my job as a telco engineer. Harry does a great job of defining telco terms and acronyms in plain English and not by using other complex terms and acronyms. This is much more significant than it sounds at first. It is simply impossible for any professional to know every last obscure acronym and term used in this expansive and ever-growing industry over the past 100 years. Harry will help to make sure that you never have to ask anyone else what in the heck their TLA's mean. You will be the Alpha-geek. All others will bow in your presence. Life will be good.

Newton's Telecom Dictionary has one more unique trait. Harry's wry sense of humor has threaded itself into many of the definitions. This is one of those rare tomes that you can sit down with and randomly read for enjoyment. Whenever there is an interesting and/or humorous story behind a telco term, Harry inevitably includes it with the definition. This dictionary can be fun to read! This is especially nice if someone walks into your work space and catches you reading your dictionary. They will never suspect you of goofing off!
