Book Description
Masks of Mexico is a state-by-state guide for collectors and general folk art enthusiasts to learn about the types of masked dances still carried out in Mexico's Indian and mestizo communities today. Close to one-hundred color photos of authenticated masks from the collection of the Museum of International Folk\ Art are presented, including finely carved pieces from the 19th century to simple face coverings made in the past ten years. The masked ceremonies are brought to life with documentary photos showing masqueraders acting out their roles.
Customer Reviews:
An attractive and valuable new reference on Mexican masks........1999-04-27
The author assigned herself the task of publishing a representative sample of masks from the many Mexican states with strong traditions of mask use, drawing from the previously underdisplayed collections of the Museum of International Folk Art, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The book brings together a number of interesting photographs of masked dancers, to augment the excellent mask photos. Some of these have appeared in other books on Mexican masking, accessible or inaccessible, others are fresh and new, to the reviewer at least.
In terms of the actual masks, a number of these are rather old, attractive or uncommon, rarely seen or described in books or exhibits; some others are not so old or rare, but nevertheless very interesting. A minority of others are familiar from other standard reference works, and add little to this volume. Their inclusion follows from the goal to present the broad spectrum of Mexican masking.
On the other hand, there appear to be virtually no decorative masks among all those illustrated, which is a credit to the excellent scholarship of the author. Indeed, she has taken great care to identify the carvers, the towns, the estimated age, and the indigenous traditions of each mask, to the extent that this could be documented. The estimated ages are refreshing in their modesty, in contrast to the florid attribution of great age to any demonstrable wear, that one so commonly encounters in books about masks.
In the end, a book about Mexican dance masks must rise or fall on the strength of the material and the quality of the photographs; from this perspective the book is a must buy for any Mexican mask collector or aficionado.

Book Description
It is the last day of the harvest, and everyone at Appling Farm is preparing for the ring shout-a celebration filled with dance, song, and praise shouted out to God for the year's blessings. Everyone in Toby's family will play an instrument that speaks from their hearts directly to God's ears. Toby is finally old enough to join them in the event, but what will he bring? Sticks? A cowbell? Horse brushes? It's hard to decide, for it must feel right. And Toby's got to hurry-the ring shout starts tonight! Dancing the Ring Shout! is the first picture book honoring the longstanding ring shout tradition from west Africa and the American South. Heartfelt and beautifully told in a rainbow of colors that swirl like magic, this story is one to cherish all the year round.

Beautiful Book -- Great Message.......2007-08-20
This is a great book. The illustration and typesetting are gorgeous. There's just enough repetition to engage young minds, but not enough to bore an adult! And the message of expressing gratitude for our blessings is great. Highly recommend this one...
The kids in my class loved this book!.......2004-01-18
Siegelson's warm, lyrical, and effectively repetitious story about an African American autumnal celebration smoothly transitions from excited anticipation to consternation to elation. The ending is gratifying in a manner that celebrates the sharing of familial and communal relationships that span generations. Backed by Cohen's bright and moving visuals, this tale is great to read to small audiences. Another winner from a seasoned southern author.

Customer Reviews:
A stunning triumph.......2007-02-14
Michael is a world authority on Mathematica. His deep insight, fresh perspectives and Herculean writing have produced a singular volume. It is impossible to turn the pages without a sense of amazement. If you want to appreciate the power and beauty of Mathematica, there is no better choice.
Here we see Mathematica as used by a master. The instruction is top notch, the examples are superlative, the topics are fascinating.
I think the customer rating system shows a blemish in allowing someone to rate this book as a poor introduction. It is a guidebook, a survey of capabilities, and as such is superlative example.
Bad Book.......2006-06-17
Absolutely terrible book. The author fails to explain simple things simply and logically. The author should read "mathematica for Scientist and Engineers" by Thomas Bahder or "Mathematica Navigator" by Ruskeepaa to see how one should write a book.
A Treasure of Mathematica Information.......2005-12-30
Michael Trott's skill, knowledge and enthusiasm regarding the use of
Mathematica in scientific research is extraordinarily impressive, as I
have found to my considerable
benefit from some extended professional contact.
His infectious passion is manifested very strongly in this Guidebook
(devoted to programming, with the subsequent three volumes --- already
available --- being
concerned with the topics of graphics, symbolics and numerics).
Chapter 1 ("Introduction to Mathematica")
alone contains close to twelve hundred
references to the scientific literature (mostly physics, mathematics
and engineering
in nature), pertaining to one application or another --- many of an
engaging/intriguing nature.
Each chapter includes a set of exercises and a detailed solution
proposal for each exercise.
It certainly behooves each reader to peruse the Table of Contents and the
Index to find the topics of most interest to him or her. Much valuable time
for the computer practitioner
can certainly be spent with simple browsing of this impressive work of
devotion and erudition.
Desirably, some of the virtuosity in the use of Mathematica, abundantly
exhibited here by Trott, can be acquired by the reader.
Pedagogical masterpiece .......2005-11-06
I purchased the Programming Guidebook with considerable hesitation; to all appearances the Guidebooks are intended for the discerning cognoscenti, whereas I am very much a Mathematica novice.
The Programming Guidebook turned out to be a pleasant surprise: while there is a vast amount of material that would benefit the expert, it is also a careful and patient instruction book for the beginner.
Mathematica is a complex system; at first acquaintance it appears to be a bewildering collection of expressions and ad hoc programming styles. This book is a pedagogical masterpiece: it brings order to this seeming chaos by revealing the underlying framework. Topics are organized into comprehensible groups and the author focuses on each in detail.
Some parts that particularly appealed to this reader:
The section in Chapter 1 on Solutions to "What you always wanted to compute". This is a wonderfully whimsical list of problems that the author has gathered over many years and each is backed up by several references. This section is an unexpected delight and following up on the references provides an education in itself. The very first paragraph in Chapter 2, where the author provides one of the keys to unraveling Mathematica. The section in Chapter 3 on lambda calculus, which clarifies the use of pure functions. The entire collection of topics in Chapter 4 on meta-Mathematica.
Chapter 5 deals with the topic that is probably most foreign to those like myself used to traditional languages, (Fortran, C, C++); the treatment in this chapter is outstanding. Chapter 6 shows how Mathematica uses lists as a unified approach for vectors, matrices and tensors. Be aware however, that the book does require a fair background in mathematics or physics, (bachelor's or above).
It is clear that this is a labor of love; the author is deeply excited by the capabilities of Mathematica, and does his best to share his enthusiasm with the reader. The result is an inspiring book that is richly deserving of high praise. To fellow novices aspiring to use Mathematica gainfully, I can recommend the Programming Guidebook without hesitation. With study and patience, this Guidebook will dramatically enhance your ability to use Mathematica successfully.
I still believe my path to skillful use of Mathematica is going to be a long one, but it does not matter - with a guide like this, I expect to enjoy the journey immensely.
Easily the best Mathematica reference I've seen.......2005-07-21
(...)
Now then - one of the advantages of Mathematica is that it is supported by extensive documentation - both online and in print. Trott's Guidebooks (set of four books - Programming, Graphics, Symbolics and Numerics) is an impressive addition to this literature. These books stand out among the rest of the literature in several respects:
1. The whole set put together must be the biggest Mathematica book around.
2. The books teach Mahtematica through examples. But unlike most other books, the examples are not toy-examples; they are applications of Mathematica to non-trivial mathematical problems. Not only do they teach you Mathematica, they also teach you mathematics!!
3. The above mentioned non-trivial mathematical problems and results are very well referenced. Each chapter ends with an extensive bibliography - usually several hundred references. This further enhances the value of the Guidebooks as books on mathematics, not just Mathematica.
4. Each book comes with a DVD containing the WHOLE SET (yup - you heard it - all four books) as Mathematica notebooks. You can open these notebooks in Mathematica, edit them and experiment with them.
5. There is a piece of Mathematica code on the web-page that incorporates the whole set on DVD into the Mathematica help browser. This feature is just brilliant!!

Non-trivial examples and accompanying DVD creates a fantastic resource.......2007-02-24
After first flipping through the book I, like another reviewer, was a little overwhelmed. It takes you into complex operations in the very first Fundamentals section. But after popping in the DVD (do this right away) and sitting down to actually work through some of the examples, I saw the light.
This isn't a "M- for Dummies" type of approach where the author consumes 100 pages of narrative on selecting pull-down menus and working gradually through trivial problems to build your confidence--the Guidebook is definitely learn by immersion and active exploration. Think "work the Guidebook" not "read the Guidebook".
The value of Trott's approach is that you're working through the kind of sophisticated problems that prompted you to buy Mathematica in the first place, not over-simplified examples that can be done on a calculator. So there's no leap to make from trivial tutorial to doing your work.
Stopping here, I'd give the book 4 stars because the index is a little scant and the headings/sections structure is hard to discern (both drawbacks when in reference mode).
However, the entire book (plus the other 3 guidebooks) are on the accompanying DVD as nb's. So you don't have to re-key anything, and you can modify and re-eval any of the expressions to better understand what's going on. Another key benefit is that the book structure is much clearer in the nb's so it's easier to reference. Open the table of contents nb which hyperlinks to all the contents and you've got a 5-star resource for doing serious graphics in Mathematica.
Turn to this book.......2007-01-10
I use Mathematica for both professional engineering applications and for personal interests which presently focus on complex analysis. This book describes through examples how to use the 2D and 3D plot commands together with all of the graphics options. Many of the examples make use of Mathematica programming capabilities to add another dimension of instuction to the text. Mathematica's Help files cover the basics, but if you need professional level results, then turn to this book.
Bad Book.......2006-06-17
Very bad book! This book, like all the books in the Trotter-Mathematica series is a excellent example of how not to write a good technical book. Presentation of material and ideas do not flow and he makes simple things more complex than they really are by virtue of his inability to communicate ideas in the most direct way. Many good authors have written books on Mathematica such as Bahder or Ruskeepaa. It would have been better if they had written this book as well.
A labor of love: Guidebook is a must have for Mathematica-using physicists .......2006-03-29
Imagine thumbing through a technical 1340 page book full of Mathematica graphics codes. If you are a Mathematica user, you would love going over this book. Michael Trott's The Mathematica Guidebook to Graphics is a treasure. He generously shared his labor of love with the ever growing Mathematica user community. Each chapter of the book is flooded with a wealth of references; he has clearly done his homework. The number of reference chapters runs well into the hundreds, some chapters have more than 800. Reviewing the references helps to compliment the unfamiliar concepts. The book also has an accompanying DVD. I personally have not used the DVD; I'd rather rehash the codes manually and try to understand them by trail and error. Essential comments explaining the reasoning behind using the commands for the majority of the codes are embedded in the codes. This book is properly called Guidebook; it is not a text book. Its target audience is a semi-advanced Mathematica user. However, interested beginners may well learn a lot going over the codes. Chapters also end with suggestive practice problems, some challenging, but nonetheless rewarding. Michael is a physicist with profound mathematical knowledge and skills. He has developed his own Mathematica coding style. As we all may agree, Mathematica is the natural glue joining physics and mathematics together; the playground is Mathematica and the players are physics and math. In my view, this book needs to be in every Mathematica-using physicist's personal library. I highly recommend the book, and applaud Michael for his enormous efforts in bringing the extended graphics features of Mathematica to the fore.

It is unfortunate that two recent Amazon reviewers have found it difficult to understand the programming style in this book. I am a retired mathematician, now an antiquarian bookseller. Over the last 14 months, I have been reading all four books in the GuideBooks set and am preparing detailed written reviews on their content for publication elsewhere. The Graphics volume, like volumes 3 and 4, assumes that the reader has read the first volume, Programming, the full text of which is available with this volume. Indeed, this is explicitly stated in Section 0.1.2 of the Introduction:
"The four volumes of the GuideBooks are basically independent, in the sense that readers familiar with Mathematica programming can read any of the other three volumes. But a solid working knowledge of the main topics discussed in The Mathematica GuideBook to Programming -- symbolic expressions, pure functions, rules and replacements, list manipulations -- is required for the Graphics, Numerics, and Symbolics volumes. ... The whole suite of graphical capabilities and all of the mathematical knowledge in Mathematica are accessed and applied through lists, patterns, rules, and pure functions, the material discussed in the Programming volume."
Mathematica's pure functional notation and nonprocedural programming and symbolic pattern-matching can appear quite cryptic, being difficult to understand without the detailed background provided in the Programming volume. This is not to slight the ability of people who have been programming in Mathematica for many years, for one can write procedural, pure function [nonprocedural], or object-oriented programs in this robust system. Fortunately, the Graphics volume comes with a DVD that includes the complete text of all four volumes in the 5029-page GuideBooks series, including an index and hyperlinks to references and material found in the other volumes. Once one has read the needed chapters of the Programming volume, reading and understanding the programs in this outstanding Graphics volume is quite straightforward.
