4 out of 5 stars A Book full of evil powers.......2000-07-27

This book had some of the most evil powers i have every seen. I hope that the other two books have the same stuff in them but for different clans. I wish it would have given a little more background for the clans in the vooks though.

4 out of 5 stars Well written and useful..........2000-05-09

I thought that this book had many good aspects to it, mainly that it covered the differences between the clans in the modern nights and in the dark ages. At times it got a bit confusing, but on the whole it was pretty good.

4 out of 5 stars A Staple for any Dark Ages Campaign.......2000-05-06

Is it possible to have a vampire game set in White Wolf's World of Darkness without the Toreador, Tremere or Brujah? I haven't found a way to yet, nor do I want to. All three are staple clans and make enjoyable player characters as well as NPCs. Libelius Sanguinis II shows a more indepth look at these clans than the basic Vampire Dark Age book. And show us it does, the first section, devoted to the Toreador, proves that death does not impede ones love for another or the world of wonder about them. The Tremere shows us, once again, that they are still not well trusted amongst the other clans. For they fear that the Upserpers will not stop what they started with the diaborie of Saulot. The Brujah are, as they are in modern times and as they were from the beginning of time: Idealists. Dubbed 'Zealots' for their willingness to seek their goal of choice. This book does a fine job on each of these clans as well as adding very playable new Merits and Flaws, new Clan specific high level disciplines, combined disciplines, and even new Thaumaturgy paths to aid the Tremere in their current battle for survival.

3 out of 5 stars Poor introduction and a so-so reference.......2007-06-27

As many reviewers have noted, this book is a poor chose for those seeking an introduction to LaTeX. However, I find that I rarely use it as a reference either; it often takes me much longer to find information in this book than on the internet. The index is horribly designed, using the same index for concepts and commands. Finding something in this book feels like finding something in code.

5 out of 5 stars The best guide for everyday use.......2007-02-21

For anyone coming to LaTeX from a background in mathematics many sources of help are available, but it is more difficult for someone coming to it from a feeling of dissatisfaction with the results obtainable with typical WYSIWYG word processors. When you are surrounded by people who think that Word is wonderful and that its equation editor can handle any equations you need, getting to the point with LaTeX where you can use it to advantage may seem more trouble than it is worth. You will probably start with Leslie Lamport's "LaTeX: a document preparation system", but although that is a good and authoritative start it is not really enough, as there is a great deal more to know than can be found in a short book, and in particular you need to know about all that is now available in the form of packages.

Fortunately there are some excellent sources of more detailed information, and two of these stand out: Kopka and Daly's "Guide to LaTeX" and Mittelbach and Goossens's "LaTeX Companion". I acquired both of these about six months ago, but decided to defer posting reviews until I had discovered by experience which of them I actually used more, and the winner is clearly Kopka and Daly, mainly because it is much the easier to find one's way around. It is quite adequate as a complete guide to LaTeX (i.e. you don't really need to start with Lamport, though it's probably a good idea if you do), as the opening chapter on "basics" really is about basics, and the book progresses from there in a reasonably gentle way..

5 out of 5 stars A very very useful book.......2005-06-23

I have been using this book a lot, in the recent months, and I am finding it very useful. I am not *at all* an expert latex user, but I do have decent programming skills, and I usually use a computer for hours every day, so my IT skills are decent, overall. For writing technical documents I have been using for years a fairly dated version of ScientificWorkplace, but I am now slowly switching to do more and more in latex, which gives me greater flexibility. What I usually do now is writing my documents in ScientificWorkplace, and then taking care of formatting and other unusual features editing the documents in Latex, through a program called WinEdt. In almost all cases, when I am in trouble with some commands or options, I find a clear solution in this book. For this reason, if your profile sounds a bit like mine, I would highly recommend this book. The new (fourth) edition also includes extensive references to the "hyperref" package, which is very very useful to create great pdf output that includes links to footnotes/sections/equations etc., bookmarks, and active buttons.

5 out of 5 stars Not the best for absolute beginners, but great reference.......2005-02-07

For starting out in Latex, I recommend one of the many free online tutorials, such as the "not-so-short introduction to Latex". That will get you more than started. This book is a great add-on reference to that, and the level is just right: not too wordy, but easy to follow. It has much deeper coverage of how to do graphics and drawings, how to create a bibliography, how to create postscript and pdf files, etc, in addition to the basics, of course.

4 out of 5 stars Brief, effective introduction to Latex.......2005-01-10

This is an ideal introduction to the TeX line of text formatting tools. It starts with a high level overview of the toolset. Then dives into document construction, then into tables, lists, mathematical formatting, and into user constructions and extensions for bibliographies, as well as other topics. PDF and Postscript formatting is covered. As well as AMS-TeX which is more extensions or mathematical formatting.

On the downside the substance of the text is only two-thirds of the book. Appendices make up the rest. Which necessarily means that the coverage is a little more terse than you would expect for a book this size.

That being said, this is still an excellent introduction to the TeX set of tools for anyone who is just starting out.

5 out of 5 stars Informative Latex Book.......2005-06-01

If you have the time to view all the internet references this book has to offer, its well worth the 40 bucks. There are so many case studies, research projects, articles and much more all evolving around the latex allergy. Whether you need it for research or have a latex allergy like myself, its quite informative. Some of the articles and studies are just amazing! Please keep in mind you will need the internet to view all the articles and case studies, etc. This book mearly sums up all th sites that contain these articles, projects, etc. into links for you to type in your browser, which will then take you directly to the site.

3 out of 5 stars Good resource for a term paper.......2004-09-01

I have looked through this 3-in-1 medical reference and found that it contained very little actual information about latex allergy. Overall, this work seemed to have more of a "cookie-cutter" approach. It seemed that it would be a good starting point for a student who was writing a research paper and needed an overview of official resources. The methodology for searching scientific abstracts and other references was useful as a starting point. But there would still be alot of work left to be done in order to access the actual information. I found the Pacific Northwest Foundation's "Latex Allergy Resource Guide" to contain much more useful information with a lower price tag.

This is an updated tutorial and also a very good reference manual.
I have the full set of official LaTeX books
(the Lamport's manual, The LaTeX Companion, The LaTeX Graphics Companion,
    and The LaTeX Web Companion),
and also this Kopka-Daly book, and the Hoenig book.
The official LaTeX 'basic' books (the Lamport's manual and the LaTeX
Companion) are a bit outdated, so this is the book to buy now.
If you are a beginner, this is the book for you, because it covers
from the basics to advanced topics.
If you are not a beginner, you will benefit from it, because it's updated,
it's a good trade-off between a too simple basic manual and an advanced one,
and because it has very useful parts, like Error Messages, Programming,
and a very good and unique Command Summary chapter that is truly special.

3 out of 5 stars Not a good advertisement for LaTeX.......2003-06-27

Any book that claims to cater for beginners and advanced users alike has quite a task ahead of it and I don't believe this guide to LaTeX does justice to either category of user.

The true nature of this 616 page beast is spelt out in chapter 1, where the reader is advised that the book "is designed for LaTeX users who have little or no experience with computers" and that there exists "considerable repetition in the text". Unless you have a solid week to spare and the memory of a gold fish this book has the potential to be incredibly frustrating. Instead of being immersed in worthwhile examples demonstrating the true power of LaTeX, the reader is forced to trawl through paragraph after paragraph of verbose explanation. Worse still, with minimal imagination employed in presentation, the fact that this book was typeset using LaTeX doesn't inspire confidence - helpful hints supposedly written in a smaller typeface to make them distinct, simply disappear into the sea of sentences.

There are many LaTeX references out there to chose from, but inevitably all books in the market place must be compared with texts by Goossens et al (400 pages, published 1994) and LaTeX developer Lamport (272 pages, published 1994). Other reviewers have correctly pointed out that this book covers more than others combined. The plethora of appendices is dense but in some cases not as useful as would first appear. For instance, one table included contains a complete list of possible PostScript fonts, great you say, until you notice that they're all displayed in the same font! However, combining this unrivalled brevity with the fact that LaTeX is updated on an annual basis and it's not hard to see why you might opt for a book published in 1999, which is larger and relatively priced to both alternative books published in 1994.

With a LaTeX 3 version in the pipeline and with the internet offering a number of compact LaTeX HOWTO's and quick references (most notably "The Not-So-Short Guide to LaTeX"), a wise alternative might be to arm yourself with a downloaded guide and actually learn through trying (inevitably making your fair share of mistakes along the way) and to hold off to see what the next generation of published LaTeX references have to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Ask for Anything More.......2003-01-20

You can't expect anything more from a book on this subject. It is suitable for a beginner that doesn't know a thing about LaTeX, but also includes details on important advanced features like BibTeX and makeindex. Perhaps most importantly in the long run, the excellent index and detailed appendices make this a valuable reference. I use LaTeX all the time and this book is never far from my side!

5 out of 5 stars The best LaTeX book.......2003-01-03

A superb book: everything you really need to know about LaTeX, impeccably organized and clearly expressed. A pleasure to read and to use.

The next three books, whose authors have taken a lead role in the development and dissemination of LaTeX's most recent versions, are The LaTeX Companion, 2/e, The Latex Graphics Companion, 2/e, and The LaTeX Web Companion. They provide further information on tools and techniques available for more complex typesetting needs, for incorporating graphics into documents, and for publishing technical text on the Web. Whether you are new to LaTeX or want to be sure that your LaTeX library is current and complete, you will find a useful place for this set on your reference shelf.
