    THE BRIEFCASE BOOKS SERIES

Now translated into nine languages! This reader-friendly, icon-rich series is must reading for all managers at every level.

All managers, whether brand new to their positions or well established in the corporate hierarchy, can use a little "brushing up" now and then. The skills-based Briefcase Books series is filled with ideas and strategies to help managers become more capable, efficient, effective, and valuable to their corporations.

Today's workplace is often complex and unpredictable, yet most project management books address only the topic of managing individual projects and solving specific problems. Managing Multiple Projects presents a realistic method for developing the individual and group skills needed to cope with competing demands. It shows readers how to develop a reliable system for taking on multiple projects, work with others to allocate conflicting workloads, cope with the stress that comes from managing multiple projects, and more.

2 out of 5 stars Some good points.......2007-04-23

For a project manager using large scale software tools this will fall very short despite the title. An opt title might have been, Time and Project management for small teams. The book starts with brief time management concepts, as it relates to individuals, then proceeds to some pretty good general team buiding points and interviews to answer questions related to time and projects, but finally leaves the reader (like a seasoned PM) pretty much wondering where its all going with 80-pages left to read.

If you operate in small teams or workgroups and just starting out in a PM role, when the role did not exist before, then this may cut it. If you are expected to apply PM principles, as outlined in the PMBOK or even moving to job where the previous person did a similar role without the PMI designation, then forget this one.

I gave it two stars because it does have some management pointers that was good to re-read after many years.

This book goes for a $1-$3 in the used section, so its not like your gonna get ripped off or anything like that, its just a question of what your time is worth and maybe being caught with this on your desk at work. I mean if your a seasoned PM and your boss flipped through its pages, you would have to quickly come up with a think-fast answer, or he would seriously question your abilities.

4 out of 5 stars The Briefcase Series is a hit overall and this one is certainly excellent.......2006-06-22

This is an excellent book with lots of practical knowledge having to deal with juggling multiple projects. As a former Director of both IT and Education in Silicon Valley, I found it to be concise and practical.

I am a fan of all the books I have read in the Briefcase Series. They have a very direct, no nonsense approach that is very appealing to busy people. I have picked up many useful ideas from many of the books form this series.

One of the difficulties of a middle level mangement position is juggling multiple projects. This book gives very useful and practical advice along these lines.

2 out of 5 stars Good title, but very little useful content.......2005-08-12

This book is a rehash of a number of other general management and time management principles found elsewhere, which may still be of use for a lay-person but is certainly not for project managers or anyone else who manages multiple projects for their profession. There are a number of other books on program management which are much better suited for that purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with Knowledge !.......2005-02-23

Irene and Michael Tobis have written an essential book for managers who run numerous small projects or complex combinations of large and small projects with multiple employees who have varying skill levels. If the process you manage hasn't been automated to the point of being an assembly line, you need this book, especially if you are responsible for team production and output. We recommend it as a fundamental part of any business management curriculum and as a training tool for new managers. Others who would benefit from it include teachers, project leaders, volunteer organization presidents and committee heads who orchestrate complex tasks. The authors provide principles, definitions and techniques that you can apply to your specific situation. Anyone who feels overwhelmed or overloaded will benefit, in particular, from chapters five and six, which focus on identifying everything you have committed to and developing a plan both to get out from under the overload and to manage future commitments more gracefully. Go get your copy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Best Book on Workload Management/Balancing Ever!.......2004-05-20

I'm a software developer, and although I don't manage other people's time and effort across multiple projects, I have to manage mine. I've been through many of the more popular Time Management books around for solutions, but this book hit the nail on the head. A simple yet profound exercise described in the book is doing an analysis of your current workload to determine when, if at all, you'll hit some "crunch time", where your commitments simply outstretch your available time to work them. While simple (and after you read it, obvious) it's never been taught in any class I've ever taken. And once you see it, you'll wonder why it wasn't. It's critical. And it's the basis for the rest of the outstanding techniques in the book to manage your workload (and that of your subordinates) across multiple projects, crunch time or not. I highly recommend this to management and worker bees alike. Simply indispensible.

    Book Description

They say that project management is like juggling with three balls - time, cost and quality; Programme Management is like a troupe of circus performers standing in a circle, all juggling three balls simultaneously and swapping balls from time to time. Each project has its own restraints of time, cost and resources and must also be seen in terms of its effect on other projects and resources. If programme management takes place in the normal three-dimensional world, then project management takes place in a flat two-dimensional world.

2 out of 5 stars It's project mgmt, not programme mgmt.......2004-05-01

I think the book really is about project management, not programme management. As a project manager professional I have read numerous project management books and to be honest, I have not learned anything new in this book. I was looking for a book that would provide a programme manager (former project manager that masters project management techniques) tools & techniques to help with managing a project portfolio. Furthermore, I found the book to be somehow expensive vs content.

4 out of 5 stars A must for anyone involved in programme management.......2001-02-15

If you are about to take on the role of programme manager, or even if you've had it printed on your business card for a while, you need to read this book.

It does exactly what it says on the cover, and as a bonus is very readable. No mean feat given the subject matter. If you've read Project Management Demystified then you'll be familiar with the author's style.

The term "Programme Management" has so many meanings, and indeed different spellings either side of the Atlantic, it's refreshing to find a book that cuts through the confusion to the heart of the subject.

The fuzziness of the subject is demonstrated by the need to devote 6 pages merely to definitions of the term "Programme Management" (of which there are at least 4) but cleverly focuses on Programme Planning as the common denominator on which we can all agree.

As well as appropriate coverage of the theory and best practice, there are case studies too. However these are perhaps too basic although they do illustrate the issues likely to confront anyone establishing a new programme management infrastructure in a typical organisation.

One criticism; although I appreciate the author's style of humour, many of the jokes are simply terrible (even though they made me smile). I'm sure it's an old gag but it took me a while to realise where the fictitious case study company Norfolk and Goode got their name from! (Oh dear I hope they are fictitious).

However, to his credit the author does provide a warning when one of his "jokes" is approaching and they are labelled as footnotes, with a corny (pun intended) illustration. So you can skip over them if you find them irritating. Bizarrely, the threat of an approaching pun does make you want to read on, so I will assume that is their intention.

All in all a useful book which can be read from cover to cover, or dipped in to as required.

      Book Description

In the past, most project management books have focused on managing one project, but in today's increasingly busy and stressful world, it has become necessary to calmly and efficiently manage more than one project—often several projects—successfully at the same time. This learned skill is valuable not only for project managers, but also for anyone responsible for the successful outcome of multiple projects, whether it is at the office or in the home! Dobson says that you must first have a strong foundation in time management and priority setting, then introduces the concept of Portfolio Management to timeline multiple projects, determine their resource requirements, and handle emergencies, putting you in charge for possibly the first time in your life!

The Juggler's Guide to Managing Multiple Projects does not forget the paperwork. Dobson supplies examples of business-tested forms, charts, logs, tables, and worksheets—everything project managers need to crash, level, analyze, plan, and control tasks. Forms were never better explained or illustrated. To ensure creative success, Dobson adds tips, shortcuts, and tricks of the project management trade with each example.

5 out of 5 stars Best short intro to handling one or more projects........2005-09-19

The tools you need for one or more projects are there. This is one of the handful of PM books that I have read more than once and one of the very few that get loaned out on a regular basis.

It is not a comprehensive book, but if you are inexperienced and need to ramp up quick, this book gives you the basics.

Even experts will find the templates useful.

It's a short book so it is long on practice and short on theory. Don't underestimate it's value though, it may be brief, but it is concise and most of all of immediate practical use to project managers, or managers with multiple tasks. Like, who doesn't have multiple tasks...

1 out of 5 stars Not worthy of your time and money.......2004-03-19

This work sheds very little light on the real work of managing project portfolios. Way too much of the text describes basic PM tools such as gantt charts, network diagrams, and work breakdown structures that any decent project manager already knows. Further, use of such tools by themselves does not make a portfolio manager...managing of with organizational strategies/goals and proper management of sponsor and major stakeholder expectations are equally, if not more, important at this level - and this book completely misses this.

4 out of 5 stars Great job of identifying types of multiple projects........2003-04-07

We have all at one point or another in our Project Management careers, dealt with the issue of managing multiple projects. There is limited knowledge out there on how to manage multiple projects. Dobson starts out by identifying three different types of situations in which you may be managing multiple projects.

The first situation which he labels as 'Task Oriented Project Portfolio' deals with multiple projects that are very short in duration (a few hours of 1-2 days at most). The basic problem in this situation could be that there are a lot of these small projects and the PM has a full-time responsibilities on top of these projects.

The second situation is labeled 'Independent Project Portfolio' where there are a lot of similar type projects that are not related (no dependencies between the projects). The problem here is resource availability that is fixed but there ends the dependencies between the projects.

The third situation is called 'Interdependent Project Portfolio' where there are large projects with many small projects identified as tasks in the large projects. Here, the main problem is the different kinds of expertise that is demanded of the resources under the overall time constraints. An example of a move is utilized where it is a large project with many sub-projects that have time dependencies but are not related in content (computer setup, ordering utilities etc.).

Entrepreneurs in start up companies especially run into the first situation where there are so many of these small projects that the business owner is just plain overwhelmed. I have recently found myself in this situation and I was very thankful to read Dobson's book and apply the simple techniques and worksheets provided in the book.

Dobson briefly develops the circumstances surrounding each type of multiple project scenario and provides techniques and worksheets that a PM can use to manage in each situation. He also creates new definitions that apply in these individual scenarios.

This is not an in-depth treatment of the complexities involved in handling multiple projects. The book is only about 134 pages long. It is an expensive book but I would highly recommend any serious project manager to at least borrow the book from some PM library that you may have access to. Dobson also spends almost half the short book on explaining simple project management concepts like WBS, Gantt Charts, etc. that most project managers are already familiar with. Hence it makes for a very quick but valuable read. Don't miss out on these neat techniques. The ROI is very high.

4 out of 5 stars Light at the End of the Tunnel!.......2000-11-30

Michael Dobson has placed one of the first stakes in the ground by defining this grey area between Project and Programmes. We (ProgM - the Professional Body for Programme Management) are looking to form a BoK (Body of Knowledge) to define the delineation between these areas and we will draw on this book as a point of reference.

Michael uses clear reasoning and definitions backed up by proven methods eg. PERT and CPM. He defines projects into portfolios and gives sound analysis for scoping and reasoning. The book distinguishes the juggling between Task-Orientated Project Portfolios, Independent Project Portfolios and Inter-Dependent Project Portfolios.

This book even covers the distinction between urgency and priority which is a issue for all Project Managers.

Excellent reading and comparatively light reading for a book rich in information.

4 out of 5 stars A practical approach to workplace situations.......2004-03-13

Managing Multiple Bosses: How to Juggle Priorities, Personalities & Projects, and Make It Look Easy is a book with an atypical approach to solving common workplace issues. Written by author and speaker Pat Nickerson, the book is in fact a compilation of issues, discussions and solutions offered at different seminars by disparate participants. In this way, the book takes advantage of a rare common wisdom and set of experiences. Moreover, The overall subject-matter is more true to the book's sub-title as opposed to its main title. Managing Multiple Bosses... has a broader focus than just managing multiple superiors. It indeed discusses and offers practical solutions for other aspects of the corporate circus. In this context, the book has a lot to offer and is even fun to read at times - the serious nature of the issues discussed aside.
The sole fault with the book though is its organization. Titles, sections and problems/solutions do not enjoy an elegant and logical pattern or organization. Rather, the book is somehow organized as one discussion after the other and the bold headings are of little consequence.
All in all, Pat Nickerson's compilation is an above average read for corporate citizens.

      5 out of 5 stars Don't Go Crazy - Read This Book.......1999-02-08

Nickerson's Managing Multiple Bosses is chock-full of practical advice - a great instructional and reference tool. It's not a text book, but it could be. If you follow its case-by-case format Nickerson offers brief, yet thorough, and readable situation analyses. The process is: 1) a problem description; 2) initial reactions/responses are given (first pass); 3) the readers are given a few lines to write their thoughts; 4) second thoughts from a group discussion are itemized (second pass); and then 5) finally consensus recommendations are given. This is a complete, fully-examined instructive process. Nickerson uses real-life contemporary workplace issues: "my boss challenges me by throwing me to the wolves" and "one of my bosses is uncommunicative, I can't read him" and "my boss has unreasonable demands that causes chaos and goes unnoticed by top management." Nickerson challenges readers to prevent getting dumped on by implementing proactive techniques: get smart, negotiate workloads, show you workloads visibly using charts and graphics. Show how much work is in the hopper and what is at "at risk". Risk management warns those owners to participate in accomplishing the work to every one's satisfaction. In effect, "I won't hang your work out to dry if you agree not to set me up to fail" - a mutually agreeable working circumstance. Managing Multiple Bosses clearly shows how to manage priorities according to risks to the organization as a whole. This smart approach benefits everyone - and it sure beats crisis management!

As projects begin to take on an enterprise-wide scope, disparate and independent teams are brought together to work on single projects. The projects are generally critical mission projects on which the future success of the business depends. They must be successfully completed. The challenge for the project manager is how to organize a number of independent teams into a cohesive unit. Each team comes with its own set of tools, templates, and processes which they claim are the best. Should the project manager let each team do its own things? Or is some integration of tools, templates, and processes needed? This monograph suggests three different organizational structures for handling such projects.
