A short Review of GURPS Horror.......2002-09-23
More than anything, I thought I'd give an opinion since I am between the two extremes of the two existing reviews. This edition of GURPS Horror (there is a new edition I have not yet looked at) is a good reference on the genre, but does lack something. I agree that having three example campaign backgrounds is more than enough, if only because there simply isn't enough detail given in each to make them really informative of how to set up and run campaigns in each - you simply must find other material if you're going to seriously run a "Horror" campaign.
I found it most useful as an extra reference for my campaign. I was running a "realistic" campaign and wanted to throw in horror aspects, and for this it was helpful. It gave me ideas on how to add just enough to keep my player's guessing, and allowed me to keep the campaign from drifting into high fantasy as I've seen/heard other campaigns do when adding in occult overtones. As such, I would have been much happier if it skipped on monster descriptions and focused more on setting tone and atmosphere - I mean, how many different books do I need describing the stats of a vampire or werewolf?
Ultimately, it's biggest problem is the shotgun approach SJG is taking to the genre - there seems to be a plethora of books aimed at the occult and paranormal, such as this book, the recently published Spirits, Voodoo, Authentic Thaumaturgy, and others, with no attempt to unify them.
I can recomend it, as a extra but not primary reference.
The last resort for the Horror gamemaster.......1998-10-12
The very first sentence in the introduction to GURPS Horror sums up the problem with the book. "Horror roleplaying, or, more accurately, supernatural roleplaying..." The book spends little of its time on horror, and fails to live up to its name. Substituting for useful advice on generating an atmosphere of horror in a role-playing game, we find the "Random Monster Characteristics Table," and the equally-random "Things Man Was Not Meant to Know Description Table." Of the 128-page book, 36 pages are devoted to monsters, but unfortunately the descriptions generally do not evoke horror or excite the imagination. The low point is the inclusion of the Australian folk animal, the bunyip, described as a "very shy" creature, with apparently a bit of an environmentalist bent. Spooky! Try to ignore the reference to Orcs here.
Fully a third of the book is devoted to campaign settings, with chapters on Victorian England, the "Roaring 20's," and the modern day, plus capsule descriptions of other times and places. The book would have been better with a single sample setting, with more space actually devoted to horror and not backdrop.
On the whole, the gamemaster wishing to run a horror campaign in GURPS is far better served by GURPS Creatures of the Night, Blood Types, Cthulhupunk, Illuminati, or even Atomic Horror or Warehouse 23, than this lightweight treatment of the topic. Its one redeeming quality is an excellent annotated bibliography and filmography in the appendix, but that's hardly enough to save the book. GURPS deserves a first-rate general sourcebook for horror roleplaying, but this is sadly not it.
The best GURPS source book.......1997-11-04
This is the GURPS source book no GM should be without. This well researched companion is an unending source of inspiriration for any kind of campaign.

Like Bad 1950's Sci-Fi/Horror Movies?.......2007-03-27
This supplement is for a fantasy role playing game called GURPS which stands for "Generic Universal Role Playing" system. The concept is that GURPS can be used with ANY book, movie or play to create a fantasy role playing game. Some of the GURPS modules have been built around real, sacred places; time travel; noves like Scarlet Pimpernel, War of the Chtorr, Conan the Barbarian, Three Musketeers, etc.; space flight; supernatural horror; and more. GURPS allows extreme customization and modification to allow a balanced system of role playing game.
This supplement is all about the 1950's paranoia of atom bombs and the horrors that atomic energy can release. Movies such as "The Crawling Eye", "Tarantula", "Invaders From Mars", "Day of the Triffids", and others are right at home in this booklet - and every one of these films are recommended by the book as supplemental material suitable for gaming ideas.
If you're a fan of the popular PS2 games, "Destroy All Humans" and "Destroy All Humans 2", then you can create that sort of atmosphere with this supplement and the GURPS main sourcebook. Unlike Dungeons & Dragons, you don't need 3 or more core rulebooks to play - just the one GURPS sourcebook and a supplement like this, 3 six sided die, some paper, a pencil and you're off!
The book is well laid out and easy to follow. The artwork is excellent and the instructions are spot-on. This was a well done gaming supplement that any gaming master can make use of for a trip to the past.
If you're into Fantasy Role Playing Games as well as 1950's bad sci-fi movies, you'll enjoy the opportunity to make your own game or play a character from a particular movie.
Other GURPS supplements that go along well with this (at least on the ones I use anyway) are:
The Illuminati
Wharehouse 23
Those two can add a dimension of fun for your group as the Illuminati are the earth's puppet masters and Wharehouse 23 is the ultimate in hoarded, unusual and powerful items.
Other supplements that could go well with Atomic Horror include:
Secret Agent
High Tech
Space
Voodoo the Shadow War
Horror
Give GURPS a try!

A great little piece of work.......2005-09-01
Many people have complained that GURPS is too generic. That the GM and players have to work to breath life into a campaign. This wonderful little book addresses that issue quite nicely. The author has created 67 detailed nasty critters; their characteristics, their goals, their methods, and their environments. Then he provides 2-3 "adventure seeds" for each monster that the GM can flesh out quickly and easily to create adventures of varying degrees of complexity and challenge. These "adventure seeds" are extremely well done and GMs might want to buy the book just for all the adventuring ideas put forth there.
The creatures span all manner of time and space and could be used in a science fiction, fantasy, historical, or even a super-hero campaign with little effort.
My only complaint is that there's no way to index the creatures power against the strength of the party. It might well take some experience and possibly some GM intervention to avoid accidentally killing the party. There is an index in the back that provides a thumbnail sketch of all the critters but some sort of power rating would have made the book perfect instead of extremely good.
The descriptions are wonderfully macabre and the artwork does a great job of further setting the tone. There's no question that the author really enjoyed creating this book. There's still some lingering questions about the type of personality that would come up with some of these monsters, but that's not your problem. Just go out and buy the book and enjoy how it pumps up your campaign without any extra effort on your part.
The first time I wet my pants in years.......2000-11-11
I read this book at night and was so scared that I didn't want to get out of bed to pee. It brought back some wonderful memories of my childhood but cleaning it up was a pain. Also, my wife was pretty upset. I was almost successful blaming it on her but the center of the stain gave me away.
I have used a lot of these creatures in my space/fantasy/old west campaign. The creatures are very creative and the outstanding artwork alone is reason enough to buy this book.
I didn't really wet my bed. But I thought about it. Maybe tonight...

An excellent expression of the darkness hiding in all of us........1996-09-10
This book is an excellent suplement in the cyberpunk universe. It's descriptions of the Mythos are quite good although they do contradict Lovecraft in places, though none of these contradiction are very major.
The setting is a future earth where larg corporations have taken over and dark powers man can't hope to understand hide in the shadows. These powers will not be content to hide forever. They feed off the suffering of mankind in this dismal age. The major drawback of this world is that you really need GURPS CyberWorld (Which happens to be one of the best Worldbooks GURPS has ever done) to play it effectively. This is a departure from typical GURPS suplements in that it really isn't a stand alone worldbook. Overall though it is an excellent supplement and a must for anyone who loves Lovecraftian Horror and Cyberpunk.

Book Description
You know you're light years ahead of most computer nerds. For example, you can make conversation with a neighbor without mumbling about the latest "Flash ROM Upgrades." But when it comes to Windows and computers, the fascination just isn't there for you, is it? You just want to get your work done, go home, feed the dog, walk the cat, and relax for a while. You don't want to spend half the night wondering why Windows 2000 keeps giving you an error message that's keeping you from finishing you work.
That's where Windows 2000 Professional For Dummies can help. This book may look similar to all those earlier Dummies books on Windows, but it's been completely revamped to describe Windows 2000 Professional, the "business" version of Microsoft Windows – which is probably what you have on your desktop computer or laptop at work. You can get the skinny on all those new features of Windows 2000 Professional, if you've recently upgraded from Windows NT or Windows 98. And experienced Windows 2000 Professional users may be able to fine a tidbit or two that they didn't know.
You won't find any fancy computer jargon in this book. Instead, you'll find topics like these, discussed in plain old English:
- Understanding your computer hardware
- A review of basic Windows stuff, from double-clicking to opening and closing programs
- An introduction to those networking things your tech people think you should already know
- Examining all those Windows buttons, bars, and boxes
- Getting around on your company's intranet
- Actually getting something done (imagine that!), such as printing documents, faxing, and setting up e-mail
- Troubleshooting and deciphering those cryptic error messages
- Top Ten lists on Windows 2000 Professional's new features and on things that Windows 2000 doesn't do too well (and how to work around them)
You know you're no dummy; but you don't appreciate being made to feel like one when you sit down in front of a computer. Windows 2000 Professional For Dummies can ease you through your Windows frustration and help you do the work that you're supposed to do.

If you need the bare minimum..........2003-02-19
There is two sides to this book. In one respect it is not nearly as comprehensive as it should be, in the other, it is ideal for someone who knows nothing about computers. Windows Professional for Dummies takes you through the bare minimum of features on a step-by-step basis. The advantage of this is that you don't have to be a genius to use the book, but the disadvantage is that you don't get as much out of the book as you would have liked. When my father first started using a PC he knew nothing about it and this book was a great start for him. I am impressed by my father's progress since he received this book, but I realize that most of his progress was through trial and error, not through this book. If you have to learn how to click a mouse, this book is great, if you want to be able to do more, I would recommend you look for another book.
not as helpful as other dummies guides.......2001-08-04
Although I enjoyed the usual snide tone of this dummies book, my major complaint is that it never gets beyond the dummy level. I read the whole book in one sitting -- now I'm hardly a computer genius and have only had Windows 2000 for a week, but I only learned THREE new tricks from this entire book! I never thought of myself as a computer jock, but this book had such basics that I began to feel like a true nerd. There are other major things I wanted to learn about windows 2000: why does it make my passwords look 3 times their normal size? Is that some kind of encoding thing? I'm sure there are other aspects to learn besides 3 ways to copy a folder or file. Unless you haven't spent any time at all with Windows (any edition), you probably won't learn all that much from this very basic book.
Written for the stupid.......2000-03-14
As a programming professional for over 25 years, I routinely use the "For Dummies" books to get a quick introduction to a new topic. My problem with this book is that it is written with the attitude that the reader is stupid, not ignorant. Ignorant means you don't know, stupid means you cannot learn. From the beginning, the author treats his reader in a condescending fashion, which serves to turn off, not inform.
Hey, That's Why They Call it "For Dummies".......2000-03-11
Great book for beginners. If you want advanced stuff go look for "Windows for Geniuses", this isn't the book for you. But if you're new to Windows 2000, this book will be a lot of help and its funny too.

Knowledge of Windows 2000 will always be marketable, and a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) rating will help you prove you know your way around Microsoft-standard networks. MCSE Windows 2000 Core Four for Dummies contains four books, each dedicated to helping you untangle the requirements of one of the four required MCSE tests.
MCSE Windows 2000 Directory Services Infrastructure for Dummies decodes Active Directory and its related services. MCSE Windows 2000 Server for Dummies deals with services configuration. MCSE Windows 2000 Professional for Dummies has to do with the workstation end of the Windows 2000 system. MCSE Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure for Dummies teaches network topology, cabling, hardware, and data communications theory.
As a package, this boxed set costs about a third less than its component books purchased separately. Its bargain price alone isn't enough to justify purchase of this set, but that in combination with its high quality is more than adequate rationale. The Dummies format (which emphasizes short, quickly absorbable passages of text) works to maximum effect in communicating theory and technique to readers. Even confusing subjects--Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) is an example--are explained both completely and concisely. Sure, you'll need practice and probably a Windows 2000 reference--these are not encyclopedic reference books--to pass the exam, but the books in this set will help you fill the gaps in your knowledge. --David Wall
Topics covered: The published scope of the four required MCSE exams, which test the candidate's ability to design and configure local and wide area networks (LANs and WANs) under Microsoft Windows 2000, implement Active Directory schemes on those networks, and provide services to network users.
Book Description
Prepare for your core MCSE certification exams and save money at the same time. This boxed set of MCSE study guides also saves you time and trouble by offering the four most popular Microsoft Certification study guides in one convenient package:

- MCSE Windows® 2000 Directory Services For Dummies

Each book in this set also contains a CD-ROM featuring the Dummies Test Engine, an exclusive feature that allows you to select the number and type of questions you wish to practice.
Customer Reviews:
This is not your one stop shop to MCSE.......2002-08-02
After reading ... users' reviews, I purchased this set of books to help me prepare for MCSE 2000 tests. I have been a sys admin for three years and W2K admin for more than one. I figured I didn't need the full MS course material or some of the more comprehensive books out there. Now after finishing two books and passed two tests (70-210, 70-215), I can share with you my experience.
I'm somewhat disappointed with the books. The chapters in books were fairly easy to read and understand. One book 70-215 only took me less than ten hours to finish. Just don't think that will be enough for the test. The books didn't cover all the topics in the tests and many of which were covered were not deep enough. I scored between 90-95% in self-test at the end of book, in thirty minutes or less. During the actual tests I used almost all the time allowed (two hours) and barely scored around 800 out of 1000 points. Had I not the experience, I would most certainly fail the tests.
This set of books should not be your only set of MSCE test-prep material. Experience and/or actual lab systems are crucial. I would have given the book 2.5 stars, two star for contents and half star for price.
One tip for readers of these books: You don't need to know where every option is for the test, like the book led you to believe, just know they exist. For example, don't spend your time memorize whether Advanced or General tab that DHCP log option resides. MCSE test almost never ask these kind of interface question.
Don't Let Dummies fool you into thinking it has no depth!!!.......2002-02-27
I used Transcender and this book in conjuntion for about 1 month and I was able to easily pass the 70-210 test. I am an Administrator and an MCSE but 2000 is completely different(at least what they test the test covers mainly changes between NT and 2000). I work for a company that still uses NT 4.0 and I have never really used 2000 in a large network enviornment like the one I currently handle, however this book really helped meout. It is good to cross reference between Transcender and this book. The way it is written gives you very simple explanations to problems you may find in other texts. It is definately a must have especially for the core 4 price. There were many questions on the exam that were almost worded the same in the practice tests in this book.I will end up spending [less money]instead of $2000 dollars on a crash course to get my MCSA.
Mixed Feelings Also.......2002-01-04
This set didn't get 5 stars for a couple of reasons. First: the practice tests aren't nearly as nuanced as those on the actual exam. I was getting nearly perfect scores on the practice tests but on the actual exam the score was somewhat lower(though in all fairness I did pass the first try on each), which was a bit of a surprise b/c when I first certified on NT 4.0 I used Transcenders only and the scores more closely matched. Second: 3 different authors wrote the 4 books, resulting in a wide variety of style and content. Personally, I liked Weadock's books (Professional and Infrastructure), and could have done without Simmons'(came across like an instruction manual for a toy, i.e. "insert tab A into slot B," without necessarily including why A needs to go into B and what might happen if that isn't done).
The bottom line is having the actual software available and setup in either a networked or standalone environment is absolutely essential(which the authors merely "recommend" as opposed to stipulate), and the best advice I can give a candidate is to spend some time with the actual software above and beyond the exercises in the books to get a more solid grounding with the various features and scenarios you will be presented with on the actual exams.
Mixed Feelings.......2001-11-01
I have mixed feelings about this book set. I would describe it as a decent set to read before picking up something like Exam Cram or a Troytec guide. Reading it makes you feel fairly comfortable with the subject matter -- something I always look for in a *first* book. (I tend to over-study). The downside would be the lack of decent walk-throughs to accompany the text and lack of detail in a few areas. While I definitely benefited from the books, I'm not 100% sure that I would buy them again.
Of what I've personally read, I would recommend the Osborne books as a good all-around set and Exam Cram if you want/need something else. I've been a NT4 MCSE for four years so my take on these (or any) books is likely different from someone just starting out.
Not Bad.........2001-10-25
I found 2 books are simple to follow: Win2K-Pro & Network Infrastructure. But other 2 books make me confuse and the topics discussed inside is not explainned in depth. The software included is somehow useless!! However, I passed my core with this book anyway :)

MCSE_MCSA_MCP Windows 2000 Professional.......2003-08-30
Just passed the test today, and Glenn Weadock's book had a lot to do with it! It's the best I've seen with letting people in on what they need, and especially don't need, to know to pass the exam. And it works! As long as you use it with a 2nd book to compare the important points, that is. The humor in this book makes it an easy read. I also really liked the 2nd chapter, where he gives readers a concise overview of Windows technology in general, from Windows 3.x to today- It really helps tie everything together in a sensible way. With that as a foundation, the rest of the book covers what you need to know to pass the exam and nothing more: You won't be mastering all things 2000 with this book! In fact, having taken and passed the test today, I definitely want to emphasize the importance of using at least 2 books in preparation, if not more, because the exam is crazy-difficult! I used 3 of today's popular test-preps, and each one had a particular strength: Sybex (my favorite) for hands-on experience, ExamCram for straightforward essential info, and this "...For Dummies" book for readability and putting things into the proper perspective. Anyone new to IT would do well to get this book!
Good Prep.......2002-11-16
Don't make this your only prep, but do read it. IDG books are usually easy reads and are pretty entertaining too. I haven't taken my exam yet, so I can't say how well it prepared me, but I will know soon enough.
somewhat overrated (imho).......2002-01-04
For the uninitiated, the Windows 2000 Professional exam contains a lot of material. For the experienced "pro" (whatever that means!), who has never taken an MCSE exam, Microsoft does their best at tripping you up, especially with its "more than one correct answer" and "scenario" questions.
I think Glenn Weadock has done a credible job of introducing the product and test taking process. However, I would find it difficult to believe that anyone can pass this exam solely reading this book. Having said that, the amount of material covered in this text is phenomenal, and is done as efficiently as is possible, and with a sense of humor, something that is sorely lacking in this business. The author's honesty attests to the fact that more resources than this book are necessary to attain certification, and references are given at the end to products the author considers good supplements to the book.
While I truly understand that writing a Microsoft test taking guide is a daunting task, and think that this manual contains alot of material that others don't, I believe it falls way short of supplying the necessary information to pass exam #70-210. Buy it, under the following conditions:
1. You have used the product extensively and just need a review guide to get through the exam. In this case, I would still supplement the text with Self Test Software's product.
2. You plan on purchasing at least one other textbook and Self Test Software's product.
One last word of advice, and Glenn Weadock also states this: by all means buy and use Windows 2000 Professional BEFORE taking the exam, if only for a week or two. Windows 2000 Professional is a fairly complicated product. Using it will clear up some of the confusion on an otherwise confusing but very stable O/S!
Great prep for the exam.......2001-08-05
Worked with NT for four years, WinPro for two months. Passed with 840 (540 to pass) with this book as my primary source. No wasted words in this one... Concise, but sufficient depth for the test. Good coverage of test topics. Used Minasi's 2000 Server book for more background in a few areas. Followed along on a test system for most of the topics - reviewing screens, creating accounts, changing security, etc. Used this book with MS Readiness Review and Mcse test web-sites for lots of test questions. Questions at the end of the chapters were good, but not as tough as those on the exam. A little light on networking. Had several networking and lots of troubleshooting questions on my exam. Get some hands-on experience, do lots of test questions from various sources, supplement with a second source and use this book to cover the basics. High quality, great value. Highly recommended.
Passed the exam in 3 weeks!.......2001-06-04
I just took the exam yesterday got 820! Needed 620 to pass. I had NEVER used or read anything about 2000 till May 2001. Brought the book studied one new chapter a day. Then spent nearly 2 weeks review. I put 2000 on my computer and did at least 3 pratise exams a day. I spent usually 30 minutes on each exam answering 60 questions. I also used Transcender but that got boring after you have taken the same exams 5 times. The amount of questions really helped. On my test I had at LEAST 10 questions and exhibits on IP and RIS. Know the requirements for RIS. Another good thing--He puts in LOTS of diagrams. Pay close attention--Microsoft will ask you what options are on a particular screen. Now the bad points:
The author has a section on IP but he really should say more about HOSTS, LMHOSTS, and DNS and some of the problems that you may see. He says he will mention backup in chapter 8--could not find it. :-( His section on backup in chapter 13 does enough for the test but he does not even tell you about the differant types of backup--daily, copy, etc. On some exam questions the answers are like TRACERT but they are not mentioned in the book. He should give the common IP commands in the network section. All he says is using ping and IPCONFIG. He does not even mention some of the options such as RELEASE and RENEW. These are small things but I think he should beef up the network section a little.
I should state that I have used WIN '95/NT for 6 years. All in all...GET THE BOOK AND TRANSCENDER and you will pass then test.
