French Designers.......2005-04-16
This book provides a glance at the work of some famous as well some largely forgotten French designers. It's wonderful of Tom Tierney to honor more obscure couturiers like Mad Carpentier, Cheruit, Drecoll, etc.
The costumes chosen trace the changes in fashion from 1900 to 1950. Some are absolutely divine, like the dresses by Doucet, Lelong, Dior and the pants and jacket by Rochas.
Aesthetically, the plate with the dolls is too cramped and I've always preferred Tom Tierney's work when the figures are slightly smaller in scale ( eg "Great Fashion Designs of the Fifties Paper Dolls").
I look forward to the next installment (ie 1950 to 2000).

Mixed bag.......2005-03-16
This is a charming salute to the many Spanish and Italian fashion designers of the past century. As always Mr Tierney's drawings are of the highest standard, and I especially liked the striking Latin features of the dolls. Unfortunately the lack of accuracy lets this collection down. A Balenciaga creation is credited to Pertegaz, some costumes are incorrectly dated, and Gianni Versace's work is represented by a costume design for an opera, when this is supposed to be a collection of fashion designs. A number of outfits aren't typical of the particular designer's work (eg Gigli, Ferre, Fontana, etc). Most puzzling of all is the inclusion of people whose ethnic descent is either Spanish or Italian, but their careers and businesses were established in other countries (eg Emanuel Ungaro, John Galliano, Elsa Schiaparelli, Nina Ricci, to name a few. Even Oscar de la Renta, an American designer born in the Dominican Republic is included!). Mr Tierney is still a great graphic artist, but his research has let him down in this instance.

Variety is here, if you like that in historical fashion. I like this collection by Tom, but it didn't "pop" for me like some of his other recent stuff, like Hoop Skirts & Crinolines or the Art Deco books did. Great if you like American fashions, and its worth flipping thru.

The only problem I have with this book is the toad on the front cover. This is what other shell books should be, this is what other shells should be. Highly recommended for the Windows administrator.
equivalent to a unix shell.......2006-03-12
Monad is not so different from the various unix shells. Microsoft seems to have taken the ideas from those and put together a credible new shell. Functionally, it will appeal to those sysadmin types who prefer to quickly put together an interpreter based solution to a problem.
The most complex part of Monad seems to be its regular expression parsing. As above, this seems fully equivalent to what you can find in unix.
Good Book.......2006-02-07
Considering that MONAD is a new shell and not many books are available in the market this book is a great introduction to MONAD. The author introduces the functionality with examples and he gives us details on how to learn more about the new features.
The author assumes that you know the windows command line scripting and compares that with MONAD in some instances.
Over all the book is great. I recommand this to anyone who wants to jump stat MONAD scripting.
