Book Description
Go first class! All these top-of-the-line crosswords appeared in Attaché, the official magazine of US Airways, and come from the minds of the greatest puzzlemakers around. The hosts of The New York Times Crossword Web Forum did the compiling and editing, and included such high-flying crossword luminaries as Mike Shenk, The Wall Street Journal's Crossword Editor Maura Jacobson, crossword writer for New York; and Merl Reagle, whose puzzles are syndicated throughout the U.S. Each crossword features a theme to pique your interest: "Go Places" tests your knowledge of global geography...and more. You might say "Coloring" displays many shades of meaning. "Sew What?" will have you on pins and needles (and maybe in stitches, too). And the answers to those special thematic questions are often in the form of puns or other wordplay, just to make the puzzles a little harder...and a lot more fun!
Customer Reviews:
GREAT INTERMEDIATE CHALLENGES!.......2002-10-29
I recently purchased this book, and can highly recommend it. I particularly enjoy it for traveling entertainment, because I can usually complete the puzzles without aid from a crossword puzzle dictionary, or help from the internet. That makes this ideal for keeping my load light! There are two sized puzzles in this book: 15 squares to the side (the size of a daily crossword in the newspaper) and 17 squares to the side (a little more challenging). The puzzles aren't too easy, but they aren't so difficult that they're frustrating--just hard enough to keep one interested!

Microsoft Word has been around for a long time, but if you are new to computing, Word 2000 can be intimidating. In Word 2000 for Windows for Dummies, veteran Dummies series author Dan Gookin goes a long way toward banishing Word's intimidation factor.
If you are an experienced Word user, Word 2000's new features, which are few for the average user, will not require relearning the software. Gookin has made learning the basics of Word 2000 easy and fun for those who do not know the product well or are new to Word. As with all Dummies books, the irreverent style wears well and the humor makes learning enjoyable.
Word 2000 first teaches you the basics of creating a document. Subsequent learning areas include formatting, creating tables, inserting figures, making a table of contents, and even mail merging using Word. While the coverage of the essentials is very good, the tips scattered throughout the book are often priceless. For instance, Gookin tells you how to alter the Office Assistant's icon or hide it completely. He also includes such useful tips as how to use an ALT-key combination to copy character formats. If you want to learn Word 2000 and have some fun doing it, Word 2000 for Windows for Dummies is the right book for you. --Rob Franklin
Customer Reviews:
Useless.......2003-02-03
I purchased this book just for the information on "section breaks." What little there is, in a word, [bad]. It is therefore totally useless to me .... Here is a quote from that section:
"I have no idea what a text wrapping break is."
Now that's helpful! At least I now know who the real "Dummie" is!
Still struggling.......2002-05-09
I found this a little easier to understand and use than "The Complete Idiot's Guide." I don't know what that makes me. It is pitched at a more elementary level and the jokes and cartoons are better. It is more frank about the limitations of Word 2000 Neither book deals with the problems of crashes and glitches, and when (and how) you have to telephone the [$$$]-please have-your-credit-card-number-ready line for help. I'm still struggling (having come from Wordperfect for DOS).
On one occasion no commands were working, and I eventually found I was typing within a footnote. Right now I can't delete or rename any document. Neither book helps with that.
"Average" sums it up best.......2001-05-21
This is right on target: bought this not expecting much (I'm not a big fan of the dummy books). My wife wanted to start 'learning the computer' which translated into Word processing. This book really did serve as a good introduction to Word.
Also recommended: For my own use, it wasn't much help. I'm a long time Word power-user. I'd say the best advanced book is 'Learn Word 2000 VBA Document Automation' (driza) and the best average user book is 'Using Word 2000' (camarada). Good luck!
A lot of good stuff, but..........2000-11-15
I have a number of the Dummies books, and they are all pretty useful, as is this one. But I would recommend "Just the tips, man for Microsoft Word 2000" if you really want something that gets to the point. That book has just the stuff you need to learn and get better on the software. It's not like your typical manual.
Very Helpful!.......2000-05-22
This book is very helpful for anyone who knows little or nothing about the Microsoft Word 2000 program. The index is easy to use and directions for each process are clear and easy to understand. The "cheat sheet" in the front of the book is very nice and helpful for answering those small questions. A very helpful book for anyone with the Word 2000 program.

Very Informative.......2007-05-17
I ordered this book to learn more about MS Office. I received this book within 5 days and it is very helpful and very easy to understand.
Microsoft Office 2000 for Windows for Dummies.......2005-07-01
The book (Microsoft Office 2000 for Windows for Dummies)is like new. I could hardly believe when I open the package and saw the book. The speed at when it reaches me was also excellent. I would encourage anyone to conduct business it them.
Really for "Dummies".......2004-12-03
As others have said, this book is very very basic--perhaps because it attempts to cover all the components of the Office 2000 suite in less than 500 pages. If you have even basic familiarity with the program you're using, it won't be much help. For example, I turned to this book to see if I could discover some of the more sophisticated features of Outlook email, and was disappointed. It's pitched to the "how to send a message" crowd. But, I also am trying Excel for the first time, and it helped a lot just to be able to easily find how to enter a basic formula. Bottom line is, once you start using a program regularly you'll graduate from this manual pretty quickly.
Turned out to be less than useful.......2003-11-27
I got this book when I entered the working world out of university- aside from providing a few very basic tips on how to format printing and what not, there is not much to this book that is practically useful.
I wanted something that would pick up where I left off in college and help me make usable spreadsheets with guides to the various equations and what not- alas, there is very little here.
This book is only for total beginners- you will soon outgrow this book and wish you had something that went a bit farther in depth and was of more use as a reference guide.
Microsoft Office 2000.......2003-09-08
Great source of easy to read information!

"A yellow cover slapped on a lukewarm regurgitation of common Office tasks."
The Dummies Quick Reference series is the only good Dummies series knockoff, and with good reason: The books fill a necessary void. They look and smell like Dummies books, but they contain concentrated bits of how-to information. At least that's what the covers promise.
The most revealing thing about this book is that it's "revised" by Bjoern-Erik Hartsfvang, which is the most interesting name I've typed this year. (Well, next to Sanky Winkervan.) The book doesn't exactly explain what was revised, so I was eager to determine whether any of Doug Lowe's familiar and clever writing snuck through Hartsfvang's revision. Apparently, and to my regret, none of it did.
Honestly, there's nothing obscenely wrong with this book. It documents most of the major things you can do with the popular Office 2000 components: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, and Publisher. There's a general introduction chapter that explains many of the common Office activities. Then the book breaks out into chapters covering each Office application. Still there's nothing special. It's just average information bobbing in a sea of mediocrity.
The topics aren't covered in real depth, which makes sense given the book's teensy size. There are step-by-step lists, but no inside hints, tips, or tricks. Often a table is presented as a solution without a real explanation of what the problem is. So, this book is more of a regurgitated manual than the kind of information I would expect to find. Despite the promise of Doug Lowe's name, this book is a disappointment. --Dan Gookin

A very good book -- it helped me a lot.......1999-10-27
Quicken is hard to use until you get the hang of it, and this book helped me "get it." Everything is explained clearly. When I had a problem or a question, I was able to look up the answer. Plus the writer is a CPA. He had some good advice about saving, investing, and lowering the tax bill.
I recommend this one.
