Book Description
For most people, the forensic sciences are something reported on the news when a crime is solved through DNA evidence, or used as a plot twist for television shows. But behind the crime-scene tape and the doors of the morgue is a world never seen by the public. Now famed pathologist and medical examiner Dr. Michael Baden and award-winning writer Marion Roach take readers into the laboratory, above the autopsy table, onto the witness stand and out in the field to show how advances in forensic science can solve crucial questions in a criminal case, often with startling accuracy.
Baden and Roach reveal how a key clue to the killer of Nicole Brown Simpson was lost when her body was moved to the morgue, and why the JonBenet Ramsey case can never be solved. They show how no clue is too small to be analyzed and no case too old to be reopened. Full of behind-the-scenes drama and surprising revelations, Dead Reckoning is a fascinating look at how forensic science is changing the way we convict the guilty and free the innocent.
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining and Enlightening!.......2007-01-09
The pair have a way with words! I could not put this book down, it only took 24 hours to read and I was up set when I was done! I wanted more! The way Dr. Baden tells his stories are wonderful, I look forward to reading more from this pair!
Inside Look.......2006-07-24
This book would be great for anyone who is even the slightest bit interested in going into forensics. Dr. Baden shows how lots of different professionals work together to solve crimes. He tells about things like blood school and bug school and what goes on at forensics conventions, that most of the population wouldn't even dream of hearing! He goes into detail on a few key players in forensics: the renowned Henry Lee, and even some of the "bad guys," including the medical examiner who faked hundreds of autopsies and had many wrong people convicted.
It's an inside look into a world that the general public rarely gets a glimpse of, and it was wonderfully done.
For the true crime junkies..........2006-06-19
If you enjoy forensic science and true crime literature this book will keep you entertained. However, I don't think it is Dr. Baden's best work. The organization of the book was a bit scattered and overall, it can't decide if it is a textbook, an autobiography or a work of non-fiction.
The strongest parts of the book were his descriptions of the "gods" of the forensics world: Henry Lee, the blood spatter expert and the entomology guru. He makes these men leap off the pages and you find yourself truly fascinated by their morbid daily activities that contribute so much to forensic science. It was a great primer on these little known, much appreciated scientists.
In some places, there was WAY too much detail, I was bored as I imagined I was reading a student's textbook. The true crime genre is a tricky one - you need enough details to keep the audience interested, but not too many they feel you're lecturing to them. This book doesn't quite get that balance right.
Overall the book was disjointed, and I was puzzled as to why Dr. Baden kept peppering chapters with his own dysfunctional childhood details or droning on about his skill in talking to juries while thwarting defense attorneys. I have read other books by Dr. Baden and have seen his HBO specials and I found him to be smart, engaging and completely competent. In this book, he would have done better to eliminate his own egocentric random details and just describe the pure process of the science and the men who do it.
Finally the pictures in the middle seem placed there gratuitously, referring to certain stories haphazardly. It would have been better organized had all of the pictures been placed in the corresponding chapters. Plus, some more relevant pictures might have been more appropriate.
I think if you are a newcomer to the forensic science genre, there are better books to keep your interest. If you're not, this book has some good parts, but disappoints overall.
Exceptionally Good. A Keeper........2006-01-04
The book meets all of my standards for 5 stars: Interesting subject, spell-binding story, and well-written. Plus Baden includes comments about the dummies who work as cops, attorneys, judges, medicos, and technicians. These people make life difficult for the real stars: competent cops, attorneys, judges, etc. I especially like how Baden walks you through what he does, commenting on the professional arcana of his craft. Any professional who fails to talk about his tools is suspect, in my book. This book will serve you well if youre writing about true crime.
Author of Practical Homicide Investigation.......2005-11-28
DEAD RECKONING: The New Science of Catching Killers provides the reader with an inside look into the exciting world of forensic science as the authors explain the scientific detection of cause, manner and mechanism of death. The authors' presentation, which includes exquisite case histories as well as down-to-earth clarification of scientific details with understandable illustration, formulates a captivating read.
As a homicide and forensic consultant I appreciate the importance of trace evidence and how significant such microscopic evidence can be in conducting a homicide investigation. DEAD RECKONING: The New Science of Catching Killers, emphasizes how crucial physical evidence can be. More importantly, physical evidence represents the "unimpeachable witness." It cannot be clouded by a faulty memory, prejudice, poor eyesight or one of many human frailties. As the authors state; "It is reproducible, preservable and ultimately the most reliable witness any cop or D.A. could ever dream of."
DEAD RECKONING: The New Science of Catching Killers is a must read for anyone who has a passionate enthusiasm for forensic science and its application to the investigative process. The authors provide the reader with real life case examples and information about the intricacies of the medicolegal autopsy, the use of blood stain pattern analysis, the analysis of maggots in estimating time of death, facial reconstruction, hair analysis, forensic odontology and the forensic exhumation.

This book predicts the current genocide of the Afrikaners.......2005-07-31
The authors of this chilling book, all ultra-radical Marxist-communists who had been in exile for many years from South Africa up to 1992, outline the reasons why the current ANC-government of South Africa is actively engaging in a witch-hunt against all 3-million Afrikaners -- due to what they view as 'the crime of apartheid".
In this radical Marxist-communist viewpoint expounded here by Kader Asmal, the former minister of education, and his co-authors, all Afrikaners must be punished as he views them all as inevitably "guilty" by association as a group -- just because they are Afrikaners. This fact is borne out by subsequent events, showing that of the 3-million Afrikaners, 440,000 now live in permanent poverty and in daily danger of being murdered - because the ANC-government has passed laws which deliberately bar access to any work for Afrikaners, in spite of their excellent work ethic and high level of education. Even the current younger Afriknaer generation born after 1994, (when apartheid was voluntarily ended by the last Afrikaner president F W de Klerk) is suffering this fate. Thousands of Afrikaner families are being murdered in the cities and the countryside, often by large armed gangs of black youths who frequently do not steal anything at all.
(...)
Kader Asmal also describes in great detail how and why the ANC-government will conduct an ethnic cleansing campaign against the Afrikaner nation once it has taken over power - all under the guise of 'fair resource redistrïbution" and "retribution for apartheid's criminal governance..."
This ethnic-cleansing campaign against Afrikaners -- which besides the ongoing murder and rape campaign, also includes a large number of other human rights violations ranging from long-term imprisonment of innocent Afrikaners, denial of voting rights to a million Afrikaners during the last election, laws to suppress the Afrikaner language in education and in public and denial of all survival means for Afrikaner families.
This entire pattern of race-based suppression of the Afrikaner is indeed outlawed under the UN genocide convention.
One of the co-authors of the genocide convention, the American jurist Dr Gregory Stanton, of "Genocide Watch", and who is the world's foremost expert on genocide, warned in 2002 that the ethnic cleansing campaign targetting Afrikaners was rapidly nearing the penultimate stage of genocide. His report can be found on the Genocide Watch website.
(...)
The ANC's violence-driven 'land reform' programme in South Africa, which targets mainly its small number of Afrikaner farmers who occupy only 6% of South Africa's total land surface, (yet produce all of the country's excess food,) has already resulted in the deaths of almost 1,800 farmers.
Yet the western news media, which has highlighted the murders of 12 Zimbabwean commercial farmers in great detail, somehow has seen fit to practically ignore the ongoing slaughter of Afrikaners on their farms and in the towns of South Africa.
This book is a chilling must-read for people who are concerned about the survival of the Afrikaner minority in South Africa.

Criminalistics: An Introduction to Forensic Science (College Edition) (9th Edition)
ASIN: 0849381223 |
Book Description
Her Brentwood home became a hotbed for homicide. But in the wake of intense public and media attention, one saliant and hard truth was often overlooked: the murder of Nicole Brown-Simpson, while brutal and heinous in its form, was just one of thousands of homicides committed during that same year. Most escaped the scrutiny of public interest. Many never made it to trial, and still others were dismissed as natural deaths-perfect crimes that remain forever unsolved. How, then, do investigators solve a murder when the trail goes cold? Like mariners navigating without landmarks under a starless night sky-lacking a reliable witness or smoking gun-they plot their course through the clues by applying their own style of Dead Reckoning, reconstructing the crime by disciplined observation, careful reasoning, and experience. Dead Reckoning: The Art of Forensic Detection examines the applications of logic and science to decipher chaotic death scenes and difficult cases, and to derive orderly explanations from their jumbled clues. The 10 case studies in this book illustrate the powers of observation exercised in reading the signs, identifying them as clues, and reasoning from them to the best explanation. For investigators, as well as forensic pathologists, coroners, prosecutors, and defense attorneys, Dead Reckoning: The Art of Forensic Detection stresses the importance of trusting your own observations even in the wake of contradictory evidence.

Dead Reckoning: The Art of Forensic Detection.......2000-04-22
Dead Reckoning is a collection of modern-day true crime cases that are equivalent to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes crime stories of the Victorian era. Nordby effectively employs the science of deductive reasoning and critical thinking to descriptively capture and recreate the details surrounding a diverse collection of crimes. Crime scene techniques are so well described, the scenes come alive in the mind's eye in each chapter. Cleverly woven into each case are vivid intricacies of specialized disciplines such as medicine, pathology, anthropology, histology, or entomology. This book is versatile enough to appeal to scholars of logic, crime scene investigation, creative writers, and even the novice reader of nonfiction as well as fictional crime stories. It could easily be used as a supplemental text in many academic disciplines. As a skilled forensic investigator, the author creatively shares an inside view in his book into a macabre world many people cannot even begin to imagine.

Book Description
The 'reparational turn' in the field of law has resulted in the increased use of so-called 'informal' approaches to conflict resolution, including primarily the three mechanisms considered in this book: mediation, restorative justice and reparations. While proponents of these mechanisms have acclaimed their communicative and democratic promise, critics have charged that mediation, restorative justice and reparations all potentially serve as means for encouraging citizens to internalize and mimic the rationalities of governance. Indeed, the critics suggest that informal justice's supposed oppositional relationship to formal justice is, at base, a mutually reinforcing one, in which each system relies on the other for its effective operation, rather than the two being locked in a struggle for dominance.
This book contributes to the discussion of the confluence of informal and formal justice by providing a clearer picture of the justice 'field' through the notion of the 'informal/formal justice complex.' This term, adapted from Garland and Sparks (2000), describes a cultural formation in which adversarial/punitive and conciliatory/restorative justice forms coexist in relative harmony despite their apparent contradictions. Situating this complex within the context of neoliberalism, this book identifies the points of rupture in the informal/formal justice complex to pinpoint how and where a truly alternative and 'transformative' justice (i.e. a justice that challenges and counters the hegemony of formal legal practices, opening the field of law to a broader array of actors and ideas) might be established through the tools of mediation, restorative justice and reparations.

From the supplier: An online survey of firms reveals that 17% of the 59 respondents have not conducted any Y2K testing while those who have been conducting tests have not included security operations in their studies. The potential for serious disruptions in security operations has also been reported by 29% of respondents. Other ancillary problems will also arise as well as problems posed by miscreants taking advantage of the situation. Thus, security managers should also consider Y2K compliance as a business protection problem and not just a technical problem.

Customer Reviews:
Holy book of EJB 2.1.......2006-08-10
This book is truly the complete book on EJB Specification 2.1 and more. By more I mean to say that not only does it focus on EJB and their real life implementations but also on the underlying technologies of distributed programming like RMI-IIOP and JNDI. It talks about the best practices and performance optimization techniques that can be used while working on EJBs. For me this book the holy book on EJBs.
This for people who do not know about EJB much and for those who are already grandmasters on them. For beginners, this book might look very heavy initially but slowly and slowly as you try to sink into the chapters you will get excellent conceptual knowledge about what EJBs are and how they are used. For masters, this offers the best reference manual available in the market.
Ok in its sense.......2006-08-02
The title says mastering EJB...which is ok for a title but this book lacks in content that is needed for a beginner. This book claims that it's audience will be a beginner or an advanced guy and I feel that it is oriented more towards the experienced reader. The first 3 chapters explains the basics of Enterprise computing using J2EE environment and a simple example of the Hello Bean EJB, which is good for a beginner. But once you start delving into chapters 4, 5 and furthur in, you will happen to see things for which you might ask yourself the question "Why have I got to do this?".
I'd recommed this book for a guy who already has a fair understanding of EJB and wants to get a through understanding of the concepts. For the rest of us, I'd recommend Head First as the starting point.
No longer a master.......2005-12-28
I have the two earlier editions of this book, but this book hardly added any value or did anything better than those earlier editions. The new chapters does not meet the expectations - I suspect the new authors messed up quality of the book. The new examples on EJB Web services is nothing but a hello world and I even doubt the new authors had any expertise to test those examples. Now I find this book does'nt make any help to me and it is no longer fit to call it as a Mastering EJB book. Now this book would collect dust in my shelf, because I find better examples in the Java web site and also at theserverside.com itself.
Excellent - great examples, covers everything.......2005-04-03
This is an excellent and complete book on EJB. I read 1st and 2nd edition of the O'Reilly EJB book based on recommendations; I have to say the Ed Roman book is far superior - he covers every detail, including peripheral considerations, and has complete and numerous examples. 1 downside - many typos - but thankfully they are so obvious, it doesn't detract from comprehension.
Good for a newbie but not the best.......2005-03-02
This is a good book for a newbie with loads of theories though this book stays far behind the enterprise level computing and on implementation of EJB driven applications. There's a huge gap between what this book describes and the real development environment of EJBs.
Never rely on the sample codes and the methodologies have been used in this book for those are not the best development approaches. This book consists of several pitfalls and not suitable to be used as an EJB development guideline (e:g: this doesn't solve the importance of PK classes and creating composite primary keys). Also never assume that this book describes the best EJB development methodologies just by fantasized by the way that the theories on EJB are presented.
If you seek more adventure on EJB this is probably not the best of books for this lacks some depth to the topics included. Apart from that, this book is quite ok for a newbie to get dirt with EJB and to understand the basics with the theories and fundamentals. If you like some fine grained info and you're a newbie, I'd suggest Applied Enterprise JavaBeans by Kevin Boone to brush up with what's missing here
