A Variety of European colonial costumes.......2006-06-16
This actually proved to be more than I expected: I had supposed that the costumes would be almost entirely English-style, but to my delight, Tierney has also given us Spanish/Portuguese, French, Swiss, Dutch, Norwegian and German costumes spanning the 17th and 18th century. The costumes are focused on fashionable inhabitants of the settlements in the future USA and Canada.
There are two female paper dolls with costume; their male counterparts are represented by paper dolls in 9 different costumes, usually with separate hats, approximately one for every three female costumes. There are two costumes/paperdolls per plate.
The French and English are most heavily represented There are three different sets of French costumes for three different periods. The English style costumes are broken into social categories, e.g., tradesman, Quaker, etc., spread over different periods. The Spanish/Portuguese costumes are all from around 1600; it would have been nice to have some later costumes also. The others are generally represented by one female costume and sometimes a male figure: Plate 10 shows costumes for German and Norwegian women and Plate 11 has a Swiss couple. The reader may want to check Tierney's American Family of the Pilgrim Period, which concentrates on English and Dutch costumes of New England and New York (some of them quite humble), or his coloring book Colonial & Early American Fashions.
As usual, Tierney has included very detailed descriptions of the costumes. One slight fault - the nationality is not always specified both on the plate and in the description, so one has to flip back and forth. No nationality is given at all for Plate 15; I assume from their position that the costumes are French.
A very interesting and informative little book. I sometimes wonder - how many people who buy these actually cut out the dolls, and how many, like me, just want a very nice little costume reference?

Four Colonial Girls Sticker Paper Dolls.......2000-07-29
This paper doll book is easy to use. All the outfits are stickers that can be re-used. All the dolls are on the inside back cover. They range in size from 4 and ½ in. to 5 and ½ in. Each doll has four outfits with accessories. The stickers and dolls are glossy with beautiful colors. The inside front cover briefly describes the character and age of each girl. The back cover tells us that the costumes are 18th-century. I would have liked to have the actual years of the costumes. The costumes are described as "simple frocks with dainty floral prints for everyday wear, crisp aprons with scalloped edges and trimmed borders, lovely dresses with bows and attractively draped skirts for special occasions, as well as cloaks with matching hoods, capes, purses, headgear, and other personal items." I would like to have seen a note next to each outfit saying when it would be worn. It's hard to tell, in some cases, whether a dress is an everyday one or a special occasion dress. While there are cutting lines so you can cut a rectangle for each doll, I don't recommend it. Because of the wide skirts, some outfits extend over the cutting line. Since the backs of the outfits are sticky, you can easily ruin the stickers if they come in contact with other surfaces. Sometimes the underclothes each doll wears will show through the outfit you place on the doll. This happens with light or white clothing. The peeling cuts for the costumes are excellently done. When you take them off the page, you get the whole outfit. Many sticker books leave up to a quarter-inch of the design behind when you use them; this one doesn't. Overall, I liked this set of paper dolls.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent and simple to follow book.......2007-07-27
Excellent book for understanding basic PC hardware. The book is well written and has many useful "hints". I highly recommand this book to anyone who wants a comprehensive book about PC hardware, upgrading and basic repairs.
Great book.......2007-05-01
Great book. Most repair books are just focused on the A+ exam. This one is wonderful for learning or improving your repair skills. It's not an exam cram its a how to book.
Excellent guide.......2007-04-24
I bought this book about a year ago when I was contemplating stretching the life of my 4+ year old PC. The book proved very useful for me to zero in on the biggest bang-for-the-buck upgrades, and which ones were best to avoid because they yield low performance for the dollar.
About a month ago, I decided to build my own PC. This book again proved useful in helping guide me in making decisions on what equipment to choose.
It's rare that I spend over twenty bucks for a book. This book has paid for itself a few times over in helping me save money by not spending unnecessarily, or spending unwisely.
The instructions are written clearly. There are many photographs illustrating the steps being described, sometimes a few different photos of variations of different types of components. There is plenty of "theory of operation" on how various components work and how different standards compare (IDE vs SATA, for example). There are specific brand recommendations. There are specific techology type of recommendations. And there is just the right amount of humor throughout the book.
You may think this sort of book is only for guy geeks. Well, I'm a woman who's just about to pass the mid-century mark, and I found it to be a valuable reference for building, repairing, and upgrading PCs. You can pay the Geek squad lots of money to fix your stuff, or you can pay a bit over $20 and learn how to fix it yourself. That's a great feeling.
Repairing and Upgrading Your PC .......2007-04-01
very good reference guide. Each chapter has some bit of information even for an expert.
"One of the Best".......2006-11-22
Repairing, upgrading and troubleshooting PCs has been my business for almost 20 years. I buy all such newly published books each year from mainstream authors Minasi, Mueller, Bigelow, etc. While my collection of those books (20) do have their own merits in technical specifications and documentation value, my purchase of this book by Robert & Barbara Thompson was by far the most pleasing. Why?
In just the first 2-hours of scanning subjects, I highlighted dozens of gems of advice or insights from the Thompson's long experience that I have NOT seen in any of the other books. I couldn't stop reading. The Thompson's book will not replace the other books mentioned, but it is the first one I consult for superb hardware insights and advice -- a GREAT supplement to the other books. Don't miss this one!

Customer Reviews:
Outdated, bad advice, nice pictures however.......2003-11-14
I bought this book thinking it might make a good companion text for an Adult-ed course I am developing. The technical advice it contains is out-of-date and I'm not sure it ever made sense in the first place. It has beautiful illustrations for things like "how to upgrade your monitor" (answer: "buy a new one"). I give the book two stars because the pictures are so pretty, but if you have a Pentium II with 32 Meg of RAM running Windows ME you don't want to upgrade, you want to replace it with a new computer. A nicely illustrated book with sensible advice like "donate your old computer to charity" or "take it the dump" wouldn't be worth the price of this book, but at least it would correct.
A Great Instructional Guide On Upgrading And Reparing PCs !.......2002-04-08
All i can say about this book is it is a wonderful guide. It is filled with large pictures and easy step by step instructions. Great for a beginner or a experienced person. I recommend this book to everyone. A good first book for people interested in upgrading or building their own PC.

If you are a newbie, this book will help you!.......2000-03-10
I just read the book and it's a excellent material for those who never builded a home network.
It guides you from the begining to end in a complete fun, "familiar language". The CD inside is a great help if you want to learn "how to" things, using MS Windows 95-98
It is usefull also for building a little company network using hubs.
Want to learn the basis? Read this book! :)

Customer Reviews:
Good book, but not among the best. Beware inaccuracies........1999-01-22
Although this is basically an good book, it is not in the same class as Stephen J. Bigelow's "Troubleshooting, Maintaining & Repairing Pcs, 2nd Ed." or "Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing Pcs, 10th Ed." As an example of Johnson and Stauffer's inaccuracies, note the discussion about types of mice in Chapter 5 where they write: "A bus mouse typically uses an IBM PS/2 style connector ..." and "A bus mouse, when connected to a PS/2 port...". Compare these statements with Bigelow's care (page 834) in distinguishing the bus mouse with a 9-pin DIN (circular) connector from a PS/2 mouse with a 6-pin DIN (circular) connector. Therefore, one could NEVER connect a bus mouse to a PS/2 connector. Note also that Johnson and Stauffer state "Many PS/2 mice come with adapters that plug into the PS/2 connector and turn into serial connectors." The authors fail to warn the reader that a PS/2 mouse can NEVER be attached to the serial port using such an adapter if the design of the mouse does not include the special detection circuits that permit the mouse to determine if it is connected to a PS/2 port or a serial port. Most PS/2 mice DO NOT contain such detection circuits. The book by Johnson and Stauffer is certainly easier to read, but the average reader would be better off to spend additional money to purchase the Bigelow book. The result would be that that of owning a book that is harder to read, but the knowledge found therein is more accurate and more complete and therefore worth the additional effort required to read the book.
Easy read and understand.......1998-12-06
Have read through this book, and it is one of the best I have seen that is written is plain english. It is very easy to understand and the information is very up to date.

cool.......1999-08-27
this book has heped me a lot i now know a lot of more stuff than i did,now i realy want to upgrade my computer,it is very easy to understand,i like it thanks
The title is misleading.......1998-09-28
As a general " How computers work " resource this book is interesting however to claim it is helpful for repairs or upgrades is misleading. The information is too general & provides no real help with specific problems.Removing the cover of your computer with only this as your guide would be unwise.
OK for beginners, not for technical folks.......1998-08-29
Title should be "General Introduction to Home Computing." If you have never used or owned a PC, don't have a technical background, and need to get up to speed in a hurry, this book is fine. Otherwise, save a bundle by reading PC magazines at your library.
Not very useful-too repetitious.......1998-02-23
This book is excellent for fun reading, but absolutely useless for computer repair.
