A Kindred Spirit Wrote An Expectedly Complex Book.......2006-04-16
This was a book I simply had to have, as the author and I have rather similar backgrounds, both of us being MIT electrical engineers, and both of us wanting to greatly improve our chess play beyond age 50. It is obvious that he and I have had similar professional training, for he has written a book that is complex and highly analytical, in true MIT fashion, and something I would likely have done myself.
The author provides a very detailed, well-thought out, and documented model of chess proficiency, and in the same analytical manner, presents methods for improvement. Even if you too are an MIT engineer, this makes the book hard to follow and masks the essential *methods* of the improvement program --- methods which in fact are quite appealing, if a bit dated in their manual rather than computerized approach (the book isn't all that new any longer and dates back to a somewhat earlier age of computer use). A reader interested only in the "how to" might perhaps successfully skip the whole first half of the book!
The book rates four stars because the methods are good and will surely result in progress, and because the program is thorough and holistic. I take off one star because it's a difficult read and there is a temptation to chuck it after about 100 pages or so. The book has also become a bit of a collector's item and therefore not inexpensive.
A Silly Book...At Any Price.......2003-12-08
Whenever an author tells me to tear up dollar bills to punish myself for my bad chess habits, I know it's time to consider tearing up his ridiculous book. The best I can say for this book is that there are plenty of worse chess books out there. I know; I've read too many of them already.
I only wish that, instead of buying books like this one, I'd done something better with my money--like feeding a homeless guy, or even buying him some beer or cigarettes.
A Study Tool.......2001-11-13
This book consists of effective tools in studying the game of chess and not so much on instructions. The tools the author shares (flashcards, APROP) is no joke in the effectiveness of its results. I was surprised to see how often certain positions show up in my games and how effective the use of flashcards, suggested by the author, have been. My only complaints is that the author tends to be a bit too opinionated in his approach to chess improvement and therefore I do not use all his techniques but the ones I do use has improved my game from level B to expert/candidate master (USCF) in a 13 mo. period. At a stuck rating, the question to ask yourself is "Which effective techniques have I done to get to where I am right now (considering you are a strong player)? and "Which techniques are not producing the results I want?" To consistently use what works and change the approach that doesn't. You know you are getting better when you make different mistakes. To study and to train like a "beginner", because beginners learn the quickest. This know-it-all mentally which strong players develop (and I am speaking for myself) actually makes it more difficult to absorb information. Believe me YOU WILL NOT LOSE WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW!
Good Self-Help Book for players stuck at a rating plateau.......2000-07-25
This book is very interesting to read. The first portion of the book could be skipped if you are willing to take his ideas on faith alone - I skimmed the first section and concluded that the ideas were reasonably sound.
The second part of the book consists of the actual improvement methods. The main lessons from the book are that
1) most people get stuck at a certain level after a number of years of playing chess, 2) unless you study smarter (not harder) or do something drastically different in your routine, nothing will change, 3) you need to allocate some of your study time to re-inforce what you already know, 4) you MUST study your own games - especially losses very critically and honestly.
In my opinion, some of the earlier reviews were unduly harsh regarding the use of computer technology or flashcards and gave the book an artificially low review. It is the method and the ideas that are important. It really doesen't matter so much whether you use hard-copy, computers, flash cards, etc. Just do what works best for you, BUT DO IT!
Good ideas, but not perfect.......2000-06-29
In this book Rolf Wetzell basically tells the reader all the factors that he thinks make up chess "strength" (how strong of a player one is), then tells you ways that you can improve on these aspects. I thought that most of his ideas were very logical, and correct. I especially like Wetzell's thoughts on light/quality/durable images, and how they can help your chessplay.
I found the book helpful, but I was a little disappointed with it in some ways. One thing I noticed is that Wetzell often repeats himself. This got annoying, and also decreased my confidence in his book and ideas. Another thing I didn't like was that I felt like Wetzell wanted me to do things exactly like he did. I would have liked it better if he had just thrown out the ideas, and let you do with them what you want.
This is also a very short book, and I don't think the quality of the text is worth the [price]. I would recommend spending the money on books that are more well known that you know will be good investments.

As someone new to video photography and video editing I am finding Premiere Elements 3.0 easy to use with the help of the lessons in Classroom in a Book. The instructions are clear, complete and easy to follow. I highly recommend it, particularly for someone new to editing.

The book provided with this has some good info and I can see that it would be useful with the files sent on DVD. The only problem I've had has been with the DVD. It doesn't want to load the lessons. I'm trying to resolve it but so far have not been too successful.
Best Classroom in a Book Evert!.......2007-03-09
I have used Adobe's Classroom in a Book for many different programs over the years and this dual program collection is perhaps the best I have ever seen. It ties together Photoshop Elements which I have been using since the Elements 2 edition with Premiere, which is for me an introduction to editing videos and CDs. I especially like the online videos that purchasers of Photoshop and Premiere Elements can access. Please keep these training sessions coming.

I always wanted to learn the basics of Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements and their use. I purchased this item with that purpose in mind and I got everything I wanted and then some. Great for beginners and serves as a good reference tool in my library for photo and video editing. Tip: follow instructions to the "T" and you will get great results. I finished all the lessons in book and in the end I wanted MORE. Adobe Creative Team did well and I thank you. Price is very good as well.

Photoshop Elements lets you enhance static images, while Premiere Elements lets you compose movies. As you might expect, there is close correlation between the ideas in both packages. So Adobe offers this book that gives a unified view.
Though it should be quickly said that it is written in such a way as to allow random access. That is, if you have a specific problem or task, involving one of those packages, you can look for any relevant section. Assuming it exists, you do not have to read earlier sections to understand that one.
The other advantage of the book is that it is authoritative.

Excellent tutorial.......2007-02-18
It's simple. Copy the lessons from the cd to your hard drive then follow along in the book with each lesson.The lesson's are short movie clips that you work on to add effects,trim, or delete to make a short movie. The cd provides you with a final "movie" for each lesson so you will know what you are trying to achieve. This book is for the beginner. I would say there are few advanced tips in this book. If you are new to Premier elements or just can't grasp how it works this is an excellent book for you.
The book I purchased was written for an earlier edition of Premier Elements, but I could relate all of it to PE 3.0. There were few differences.

If you have used an "Adobe Classroom in a Book" before, you know what this one is like. If you are a beginner in video or Premiere Elements, this might be a good "second book purchase". After you finish the lessons you can skim through the users manual and get what few details are left out here. The only criticism that I have about this book is that a proofreader did obviously not check it.
Great Introduction to a complex subject.......2005-11-16
Not sure why someone would think this is the manual. It is not the manual, it is a separate book with a DVD full of projects to work on and step by step exercises on things like Editing and Transistions, special effects and titles and how to make a DVD.
I found this book to be a great introduction to working with video on my computer- I chose Premiere Elements because it let me burn a DVD from the program. The chapter in the book is much better than anything in the manual as it tells you how to set up chapters and make a menu.
For someone who didin't know anything about video this book introduced me to the subject in a way that was easy to follow.

I have no basis for comparison as I got this software to make a wedding slideshow. I've done my research and read reviews that this is more difficult to learn than other programs.
I've only used a very old version of ULead before, but I must say, this program was able to do whatever I wanted it to do, Ken Burns effects, rotations, pans, zooms, etc. Granted I was forced to learn quickly, after I discovered the concept of keyframes, it was just a matter of manually doing everything the way I wanted it done.
I highly recommend this program for beginners because it provides many of the special effects, transitions, etc. for video production. Once done, you can either author a DVD or export movies into many formats including MPEG-2, AVI, WMP, and autoplay DVDs.
Although it's an Elements version, it packs many powerful features. I haven't had time to read the manuals. But I guess if I did, I would find out more functionality and shortcuts. Good luck deciding!
making DVD slide shows with photoshop elements 4 & premiere 2.......2006-03-18
After numerous hours attemting to make DVD slide shows with Photoshop elemnts 4.0 and Premiere 2.0, I have given up for now.It appears that my Windows Xp media center has a problem preventing this particular use of the application to work.
Adobe support was unable to solve the problem without a complete reinstall of Windows.
Otherwise I like Photoshop elements 4.0
A Big Help to Get Started.......2006-02-20
I have had some experience with Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, but none in Premiere. Photoshop has several new features I had not used previously. The book was great at getting me started on a new project to put together a DVD of our church's high schools grads and their family pictures, along with audio. The book includes a disk containing all the lesson materials, showing how the final product should look prior to walking you through on how to get to that final product. It does not cover all of the features of each program, but is great at getting you started and familiarizing yourself with the program interfaces.

A very easy read and a step by step tutorial. I ordered the book before buying the software assuming the degree of difficulty was high... if I had to do it over again I probably would have waited because the manual is pretty thorough.
I use the classroom book as a reference whenever I get stuck...

Adobe offers this combination of their Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements, as a unitary text. The aim is to show how you can learn both in a synergistic manner. That there can be a seamless transition from dealing with your static images to pasting together video and images. All of which is offered with powerful tools in each package.
Perhaps the main reader for this book is one who wants to use Premiere, and is considering Photoshop. For the majority of Photoshop users, who will not be creating videos, the book is superfluous, however well written it might be.
