Book Description
The Gods blessed Lieutenant Bak, head of the Medjay police, with a rare brilliance -- which is why he is the one to whom his commander turns in a time of need. The explorer Minnakht has vanished into the vast and merciless Egyptian desert -- or perhaps has strayed perilously close to Queen Maatkare Hatshepsut's well-guarded turquoise mines -- and before Bak sails north on a new assignment he is to seek out the missing man. But evil is traveling with him and his Medjays in the caravan they accompany eastward. Someone -- or something -- is responsible for the strange rash of deaths that is rapidly thinning the numbers of their fellow travelers. A straightforward search for a missing adventurer becomes a twisted knot of treachery and blood -- one that threatens to strangle the life from Bak and his men and leave them buried for all eternity beneath the blistering sands.

Another not very exciting Lt. Bak story..........2005-08-15
I keep trying but cannot get interested in the stories by this author. They seem to drag out with her style of "he said/she said" writing with nothing exciting, except perhaps one part in this book. The story begins as the famous Lt. Bak is asked by his commander Thuty to investigate the disappearance of an explorer named Minnakht. His guide, Senna tells Bak of the disappearance and attraction to turquoise mines near the sea. The land is hostile and murder and death come as Lt. Bak questions each man over and over. The ending was not exciting or unexpected. Lt. Bak's constant referrals to the donkeys (we know how he is sympathetic to animals, this big strong medjay!! I had to make myself sit and finish it.
Not up to par with prior entries in the series.......2004-02-29
I've admired Haney's Lieutenant Bak stories, but have to admit that this one just doesn't live up to her best. Bak strikes out on an interminable trek in the desert to find the son of big-wig. By the time the mystery is solved, you feel like you've spent WAY too much time in the desert yourself. The solution is not particularly satisfying.
I'm hoping that when Bak moves north for his new assignment, the series will regain its spirit.
A Path of Shadows.......2003-11-14
I have read all of Laren Haney's Lieutenant Bak novels. I can honestly say I have enjoyed every one of them, including this one. For anyone interested in Ancient Egypt they are a must have. If you also like a good 'detective' story then they are a double bonus. The settings and stories are very believable as are the characters who are aslo very likeable - our hero, Lieutenant Bak and his Medjays anyway! One of the best things I like about them is that the stories are about mostly ordinary people - unlike many other writers who feel it essential that the their novels have to be about some exalted nobel or king or queen to be interesting to the public. That's one of the reasons these novels are so good - and it certainly helps that they are also good stories in addition. As for this particular novel it keeps up to the standard of the previous ones. Bak finds himself sent into the Eastern desert searching for the son of one of his superiors freinds. Naturally he is accompanied by an odd and interesting bunch of fellow travellers - not to mention the nomads that live in the desert -any of whom could know of the sons fate.

I'm glad a previous reviewer enjoyed this book and the previous one, but I did not. I too am a great fan of this series, but the last two books seemed flat to me--not very engaging. I certainly will continue to read Haney's books about Lieutenant Bak because when they are good(which they usually are) they are very very good.

Good "Starter" Book..........2007-01-25
The book is comprehensive, well-researched, and well-presented. I did learn a lot from the book, and I would recommend this book to other people beginning recovery from SA. The book talks about the ten types/stages of courtship and how sexual addiction can affect an addict, so you can diagnose yourself and where you're having difficulties from the charts. It also talks about how slips are like boulders falling off a hill, and there's a great illustration to explain that and how bottomlines can help you.
What was missing for me, and hence the 4 stars, was the lack of content regarding "Relationship Recovery" part. There isn't much indication on how to go about dating the right way for S&L addicts - for example, if you saw the chart and realized you have problems with "seduction" phase of the courtship, you know you have this, but the book doesn't help you to revert this, or suggest what you're supposed to do with the diagnosis, other than "abstinence".
I would say this is a great resource for Sex Addicts in Recovery, but if you are a Sex AND Love Addict in recovery - this book won't fulfill all your needs. I don't know; perhaps Carnes has written a separate book for Love Addiction that I haven't checked out yet.
I would say I'm about 85% satisfied with the information provided by the book, and roughly 70% satisfied with the purchasing of this book.
Facing Reality.......2006-06-26
Dr. Carnes is a noted authority and perhaps the premier researcher in the area of sexual addiction. His work goes back easily some twenty years. I have studied with Dr. Carnes and I can say with some authority that this may be his finest work. It is the fruit of much thought and labor. It is reality. Carl Rogers said: "Until we can accept ourselves as we really are we can't change." This book, really a work book, helps the addicted person do just that. But it doesn't stop there. The addict is able to see through the work he does that he is able, through healthy activities, to regain control of his life. This is the second edition. Dr. Carnes demonstrates not only his high standards of authorship, but his humility and ability to accept constructive criticism both from within himself and I think perhaps others, in the changes he has put into this second edition. They are well worth the effort. Dr. Carnes comes at the sexual addiction issue with clarity, research, and above all empathy. His other work "The Recovery Zone," will I think prove to be as well received as this work.

"Beyond a Shadow: The Path of the Spirit," the second book in a series on human energy by parapsychologist and human energist, Bernard Willemsen, is one of the most comprehensive books of its kind in the field of spirit work, offering a rare glimpse into non-physical worlds that exist right alongside our physical one.
Bernard Willemsen's 20 years' experience of those realms is brought vividly to life, giving us a deeper understanding of our own psyches and a fascinating insight into the minds of those spirits who guide and protect us, and of others who mislead the unwary and uninformed.

Product Description
These are veterans with a point of view whose trajectories of belief had many different starting points, took many different paths, but in every case led to an abhorrence of war.; anti-war feeling among veterans has not been given the attention it deserves, and this volume is an attempt to correct that imbalance, writes Howard Zinn in the Foreword. Veterans speak of war and peace with a certain creditability that others lack. Having experienced war and peace more intimately than many others, their responses and thoughts reflect the life-defining or life-changing capacity of war. Long Shadows is a collection of 19 interviews with veterans who candidly discuss their paths from military involvement to peace activism. Beginning with a veteran of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade during the Spanish Civil War and ending with a veteran of the Iraq war, each tells a unique story with an individual perspective, and yet, each echos the message of the futility and destruction of war. The long shadows of war are evident in each of the interviews, with each participant hoping that his or her experience will inform others and contribute to the public discussion.

All the tools a rogue needs to fight back against the DM!
Customer Reviews:
Lots of choices for rogues.......2007-01-03
This little gem contains a number of cool ideas. My players aren't rule lawyers, so they trust me to pull together neat ideas for their characters. Path of Shadow has lots (I mean LOTS) of classes and abilities that you can either use as presented, or do what I do and merge them into existing classes. This is a 3.0 book, but I'm not having any trouble using it with 3.5.
A great source book.......2003-03-18
This is a great source, it has 19 prestige classes with their respective organization that not only can be applied to the rogue class but also to the ranger and bard classes, their all well balanced, but most importantly you would want to play them all.
It also has 13 legendary classes, this is a great concept, because it will give you more options for high level campaings, and because the tests you would have to take to achive them would give your DM more material for adventures (and this adventures will be very exiting).
The art of the book is also great, some people won't like it because it's black & white, but I think it's perfect for a Book called Path of Shadow.
If you are looking for a great source book with complete information (and that is better than the oficial one) this is it.

Book Description
For system administrators, ensuring that all Windows servers are performing optimally is a tall order. The larger the enterprise, the greater the chance for irritating, time-consuming configuration problems. Sometimes, you can determine the root cause of the problem yourself-but that's only if you're lucky.
With Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM), the diagnosis is done for you. MOM monitors server operations and automatically notifies you of problems by sending an immediate alert to your console, email address, or pager. To help you better understand how MOM works, O'Reilly presents Essential Microsoft Operations Manager.
The goal of this comprehensive tutorial is to give first-time MOM administrators a solid foundation for planning, implementing, and administering MOM 2005. Author Chris Fox, a renowned MOM expert, offers the type of practical, real-world advice that you need to improve the performance of your IT infrastructure.
After taking you through the entire process of setting up MOM on the network, the book moves on to more advanced administration issues. It carefully instructs you how to program and automate MOM and the agents that reside on the servers themselves. You'll also learn how to manage the scripts that determine which server agents are relevant to report.
By capturing system data, intelligently analyzing it, and then notifying you with a suggested course of action, MOM makes extinguishing fires a breeze. And now, thanks to Essential Microsoft Operations Manager, learning how to use MOM is a breeze, too.
Customer Reviews:
Every MOM 2005 admin needs to read this first.......2007-09-16
This is a great book to get up and running with MOM 2005. After reading this, I suggest reading Microsoft(R) Operations Manager 2005 Unleashed (MOM): With A Preview of Operations Manager 2007 (Unleashed) to really solidify these concepts and fill in the gaps.
Essential Microsoft Operations Manager.......2007-07-30
Well written, supply the technical information needed. Little long prolog but in the end well written and easy readable.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-10-28
Are you a first-time MOM administrator? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Chris Fox, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that gives you what you must know in order to have a solid foundation for planning, implementing, and administering MOM 2005.
Fox, begins by bringing you up to speed on the basic concepts of operations management and how to get MOM 2005 up and running in your environment. Then, the author takes you through the components and tasks that you'll be working with most often as an administrator. Finally, he discusses the specific issues you'll encounter when using MOM in a larger environment, with a variety of platforms.
This most excellent book will help you get your job done. More importantly, this book helps you deploy MOM 2005 in large enterprises with heterogeneous platforms.
Give the essentials book a break.......2006-07-10
I just don't understand how can anyone rate an "essentials" book not good enough for not having enough details or "beef" in it. I have to give it 5 stars to make it fair. This book is great if you are absolutely new to MOM, it will get you there to install it and customize it at a basic level. I believe that the author gives you enough detail to let you drive on your own after this test drive. It really made my implementation easier, I gave the book to a coworker and he had about my same views. Just remember, if you are not new to MOM look somewhere else.
Where's the beef?.......2006-06-25
I had now purchased both of the available MOM books, both seem to cover roughly the same material, but neither really has any meat to it! I would have given this 3 stars, but unfortunately, the author makes a boring topic even more boring.
Book Description
My e-mail takes forever. My application is stuck. Why can't I log on? System administrators have to address these types of complaints far too often. With MOM, system administrators will know when overloaded processors, depleted memory, or failed network connections are affecting their Windows servers long before these problems bother users. Readers of this book will learn why when it comes to monitoring Windows Server System infrastructure, MOM's the word.
Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2006-05-21
i am new to mom, and this book was very helpful to get to learn the product. i do agree with another reviewer who said that the material was probably not enough and the title is a little misleading (although a lot of the publishers books follow this title format), but it did get me started with the product when no other resources were really available.
Not Enough.......2006-05-10
This book contains the word 'Cheating' in the title, and the only cheating is how the authors are cheating administrators out of their money. The table of contents for the book looks promising, but there is not enough meat within to make the book worthwhile. After looking through page after page of screen shots on how to install MOM 2005, there is hardly any explanation on how to configure the product. The only mention of discovery rules is made at the end of the installation section, and then it is only in reference to the 'Install/Uninstall Wizard'. If you want to control the agent installation and fine-tune the management servers, there is absolutely no discussion on configuring Agent properties, Management Server properties or any of the global settings. Let alone how to override globals settings at the server or agent level. Advanced configuration options such as configuring a multihomed agent and cross-management group communication using the MCF and MMPC are non-existent. I had hoped that the chapters on managing services such as Exchange and SQL would contain quality information, but alas, they are only rehashed discussions of the information you can read within each management pack's configuration guide.
Nice but not well organized.......2006-03-29
As another reviewer noted it is nice to finally have some MOM 2005 books available. Since MOM itself has been around for a quite a while now its really amazing to think that there have been so few books published about it. For me this is the first MOM book I've had a chance to read so I cannot compare it against others unfortunately.
Let me start off by saying I like the topics covered in this book. It covers some very specific and practical topics such as how to use the Exchange, SQL, AD, and the HP/Dell server management packs (MPs). I think this is great because these are probably the MPs that most people using MOM are going to want to install first. It also covers troubleshooting and backup procedures fairly well.
One really nice feature of the book is the FAQs listed at the end of the chapters. The author usually has 10-15 questions at the end of very chapter that reflect common questions he has received in the real world. These are very common questions that someone new to MOM would probably ask and the author's answers seem reasonable to me.
Another nice feature are the Shortcuts and Independent Advice bubbles the author sprinkles throughout the book. These little blurbs cover alot of the author's real world experience and help the reader to do things more efficiently.
Where I think this book struggles is with organization and detail. The book is poorly laid out in my opinion because the author places some of the more advanced topics early on in the book. He also discusses topics and then doesn't finish the discussion until further on in the book. As an example, to me a topic like editing or authoring a MP would be a topic I would expect to find near the end of the book. The author begins discussing this in chapter 5 (less than half way through the book). For a book like this I think most readers are looking for the basics of how do I install MOM, configure it, and get some basic value out of it. While a MOM admin definately might want to know about tweaking or creating his own MPs this is something that comes later down the line after you're pretty comfortable with the product.
The author provides examples sometimes in the book but many of them could use more detail. He also mentions things that he is frequently asked to do in the real world but doesnt provide detailed examples of how these tasks would be accomplished. Given that the book title implies that the book is for people who dont have time to become MOM guru's I would think the author would be showing many many exact procedures for optimizing and tuning MOM.
Overall, this book is a reasonable starter guide for people looking to get up and running on MOM. It's not going to make you an expert but at least it gets you pointed the right direction and answers some of the questions that might be confusing to new MOM users. The book is worth the $25 price Amazon offers but I'm not sure I would pay the full cover price of $40 for it. I give this book 3 *'s because its a decent 1st MOM book but I see plenty of room for improvement.
Finally! .......2006-03-16
I have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for Microsoft Press to release a book on MOM. Apparently, someone else beat them to it. The book is a great starting point for getting MOM up and running as well as some of the more popular management packs. This book is going to turn into a great desk reference as I begin to roll out MOM in my organization.
