Fascinating font of factoids.......2002-10-30
Seven years ago, my wife and I thought we were going to be clever and original if we named our daughter "Hannah". We didn't know any Hannahs in our generation. But now it seems every other family had a "Hannah" in the 1990s. After reading Lieberson's book, I understand that we got swept up in one of the many waves of name-fashions that he so ably chronicles.
This is an entertaining book, remarkably so considering the author's intention which was to write a serious work of academic deep-think. So there's a great deal of sociologist talk, which is decidedly not entertaining. But, just as the cartoons redeem even the worst issues of the _New Yorker_ , this book is worth getting just for the many statistical charts. You can follow the spectacular career of "Jennifer", the ups and downs of Biblical names, learn about names and social class, and so on.
Finally, I recommend this book to economists who are interested in fads and herd behavior.
What's in a name? Lieberson knows!.......2001-09-04
Lieberson has written a scholarly, witty, and extremely informative book about the factors influencing parents' choices of first names for their children. Using data from 7 countries plus the states of Illinois and California, he shows that "fashion" affects children's names just as much as it does choices in clothing or music. Names became objects of fashion several centuries ago in the West, when, among other influences, state regulations and religious customs loosened their hold over what names parents could choose. With the changes concomitant upon nations entering the modern era, name choices subsequently became more matters of individual preference rather than custom and tradition. However, parents made their choices within the context of changing tastes driven by forces "internal" to the naming process itself, rather than being "determined" by external technological or mass media forces.
The sounds of names themselves display explicable trends, such as the preference for names ending in "a" or "n." Groups of names with similar endings rise and fall together, in fairly orderly, long-term movements.
Lieberson does a brilliant job in presenting evidence, using simple graphs and tables, rather than elaborate quantitative statistical analysis. His chapter on trends in name choices among ethnic and racial groups is particularly compelling, as he shows the joint affects of internal mechanisms (e.g. how names "sound") and external influences (e.g. a group's desire to assimilate quickly).
Want to know why your parents named you "Judy" rather than "Judith"? This book has the answer!
A Taste of names.......2000-09-15
A MATTER OF TASTE is a powerful contribution to our understanding of the factors underlying the popularity of first names. Lieberson has brought together a wealth of ideas, concepts, and principles to the analysis of social change. He has used empirical data from the research on names to do this. The data come from several locales including various parts of the United States, England and Wales, Scotland, Denmark and France. Extensive attention paid to the media influence (or lack of) on the popularity of names. For anyone interested in first names this is a valuable background source to understanding their importance.

WHY MARRIAGE MATTERS.......2007-04-11
READER SHOULD BE AWARE THIS IS A "FOCUS ON THE FAMILY" BOOK AND THE MORALISTIC DRUM BEAT IS CONSTANT.
"Very Good Book".......2007-02-15
In this time of so many divorces this was a great book detailing the many benefits of marriage.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who falsely believes that marriage has no value and that single life is the best.
Live long and prosper..........2000-11-22
The results of over 100 years of scientific research are gathered together in one place, spanning studies from the 1890s to the present day. The data cover multiple cultures and deal with all stages and ages of life. Literally hundreds of individual studies are represented, many of which were done by researchers at some of the most "liberated" universities in Europe and America. Yet the results of all these studies uniformly support a consistent set of notions: that human beings fare best when they are reared in intact nuclear families; that they prosper best in adult life when joined, male and female, in lifelong monogamous relationships sanctioned and supported by the community; that both adults and children suffer enormously when divorce breaks up a family.
The implications are clear. The post modern mantras that "children are resilient," and that "we're better off apart if we don't agree" are just plain wrong.
The lessons to be learned are not just for those facing marital difficulties. I think the message is especially important for re-establishing in our children the expectation that marriage is forever, so choose well and work hard. This book may be a little dry for your teenager and addresses a difficult subject for many parents to discuss with their own children, so you might wnat to extract some nuggets for small group discussion at key places like church youth gatherings. In the process, you will probably discover some reasons of your own for "keeping at it."
A "marriage saver". Critical information for every marriage.......1999-09-28
My husband and I read this book at a critical point in our marriage, and found it a life-saver. Many of the author's points are based on research and statistics, but when he writes from the heart, it touches your heart. It truly was an eye-opener and beneficial to us.
Good Research Book.......1998-11-27
This was a good reference for my daughter writing a school paper on marriage.

So-So.......2004-09-06
I purchased this book to help reinforce good manners with my 8 and 10 year old children. While the book's pictures do generate lively conversations about good and bad manners, I feel it falls short in several areas. First of all, the entire book is in black and white with very basic drawings and sometimes it is difficult to tell what the subjects are actually doing. [For instance, laughing...(mannerly) or burping...unmannerly]. The book often does not present what is mannerly and what is not in the context before asking the children to group mannerly and unmannerly behavior. It is left to the adult/teacher to come up with the information to present to the children. If the adult/teacher is not up to speed on manners, it makes it very difficult to teach. If the adult/teacher is up to speed on manners there would be no need for this book to teach them, so I feel the assumption by the author that all adults/teachers have good manners is a little odd. Finally, there are some major errors in the way the book is put together. For example, on page 73 the children are supposed to cut out pictures of plates and eating utensils to paste onto page 72 (correctly setting the table) and then check on page 74 where the pictures of a correct table setting are to make sure it has been done properly. Well, page 74 is on the backside of page 73, so the correct table settings are cut up. All in all, I feel this book is helpful, but make sure you know YOUR manners well or have an etiquette guide on hand to reference.
Handy to Have.......2002-11-18
I am buying this book because I can't keep renewing it from the public library forever! I have been using it with my second grader on an ongoing basis to help him have good manners and to help him see why good manners are important and helpful to him. The other day, I let him buy the milk in a local convenience store. He remembered to say, "Thank you." The clerk told him that he was a good boy. He was so pleased. I think discussing this book helped him learn how to behave well in the store and earn that praise.

Book you've been waiting for!.......2007-01-19
Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (1/07)
Have manners gone out of style for teens? "Manners are timeless. Manners are valuable." For us to become the person God means for us to be we must have manners. This book is written specifically for teens who want to "live confidently and respectfully toward others and be shown respect in return." Those that exhibit manners will be much more successful in this world. "Manners Matter for Students," covers many areas where a student might not know how to properly react such as: introductions, making meaningful conversation, telephone manners, personal manners (hygiene), and personal values.
The authors offer great advice on introductions. They include instructions on what to do when you are being introduced or someone is being introduced to you, how to speak to adults, and opening conversation lines. Even as adults we've faced the insecurity of what to say to someone you've just met. "After you ask a question, listen to the response." Soon you will "discover points of common interest."
Your conversations will have an impact of how people perceive you. "An important part of the art of conversation is learning to listen and asking appropriate questions." Meaningful questions show a person that you are interested and you are listening. This book has some very good guidelines such as not standing too close to someone, your body language, and hand gestures. It is always to be remembered that certain things are off limits, such as gossip, flattery, ethnic jokes, inappropriate jokes and confidential information, which are not things that can leave people feeling good about themselves.
"Manners Matter for Students" has impressed me. As an educator I have seen a failure of the parents and the school system to stress this important area. The authors have done an excellent job covering many aspects of what should be common sense. The cover is hilarious and will catch the eye of many teens. I intend to take this book into my classroom and share it with my students. This book should be required reading in all schools. It is with great honor that I highly recommend this book to educators, parents, grandparents, teens, and preteens
Manners Matte.......2007-01-05
All the little things you wanted to know put together in a book that is easily read .This book gives you short to the point lessons for grandchildren or children .As an adult it was good to get explanations on foods on the menu and proper settings for silverware.

Customer Reviews:
Not worth the price.......2007-06-29
Very hard to follow, poorly organized and written. Unless you're well versed in Access already, skip this book. Definitely NOT for beginners.
Good book but not all the answers.......2007-05-12
This book is a good start toward understanding how to build Access applications. Some of the details are missing. An example would include the proper syntax for referencing fields in a form.
Not for the newbie!.......2006-03-14
Definitely not for the newbie. This is for the seasoned access programmers. I you are new to programming (at least in access) and are looking for a book on how to program with access, this is not for you. This is a great book for those seasoned programmers who are looking to make their applications better.
Very Solid, useful book for development of Access Applications........2005-06-29
Easy to read first few chapters with basic design info, remainder of the book focuses on complete applications that can serve as a template/best practice for almost any other MS Access application.
Viescas clearly understands/communicates an in depth knowledge of Access Applications that I have not seen anywhere else.
I've learned much in the first 3 chapters.......2005-03-27
As a self-taught Access developer for the past eight years, I have an extensive library of books dealing with beginneing to advanced areas of Access. I bought this book to add to my library, figuring it to be another reference item. However, in a casual browsing of the content, I discovered this book has much more to offer. I was pleasantly surprised to see information on levels of magnitude for linked tables, never having known that the number of sub folders for linked tables can affect the speed of reading from them.
Each of the sample databases has more than enough explanation and code to fully understand the how and why of the application.
After reading only the first three chapters, I have learned much that I was never aware of. I thought I understood Single and Double number types, but was re-educated by the information on page 18. Pages 32 and 33 taught me some new things about the difference between format and input mask.
I am now much better at my development, and I haven't yet finished the book. Excellent work, Mr. Viescas!

reading was a waste of time.......1999-11-03
This books talks much about substantial things on building web-sites. It gives an overview of html, cgi and ms access, tells basic rules how to make web-sites with database, how to organize that and so on BUT it really doesn't tell the most important thing: How exactly to create a perl program that can query an access database! I simply wanted to build a small database and query it with perl, I couldn't reach that target with this book. So it was a waste of time.
Not what I expected..........1999-04-15
I was very disappointed in this book. It gives a brief summary of the workings of Access, which I already knew. However, it is very skimpy on the technical details involved in publishing a database to the web. There has to be better books out there, somewhere.
What A Pleasant Surprise - Great Book!!!.......1998-09-30
This is one of the best technical books I have ever read. The numerous examples provided are right on the money, and the descriptions are more than enough to illuminate the topics presented.
Although I knew quite a bit about MS Access programming before I read this book, I still learned more. I didn't read it though to learn about MS Access, I read it to learn about how to integrate a MS Access database into a Web application.
My only wish for this book is that MS Press would have published it --- they need more high quality books like this to be published under their press!
I'm Hiding This Book!!! Don't Want It To Grow Feet And Walk!.......1998-08-08
This is a GREAT book! I was asked by my boss to figure out what it would take to place our inventory database on the Web for our suppliers to access. This book not only showed me a number of ways to do that, but gave me some great tips. This is NOT a book to buy if you want to learn how to do MS Access programming. It clearly states it though in the front matter. But, if you already know how to access an MS Access database and want to learn how to couple an MS Access database with a Web application, then this is a "must buy" book.
Buy This Book For What It Is.......1998-07-28
This is an excellent book to give one a broad based understanding of how to build a Web application accessing a MS Access database. It assumes a basic level of understanding of MS Access, so don't look to buy this book if you want to learn to write a SELECT * FROM CUSTOMERS; table. Do buy this book, however, if you want to understand the many ways that a database can be accessed from a WEb application.
