Geek Pool Book.......2007-09-09
We bought a house with an inground pool 5 years ago. A bit of a surprise really. We had ZERO experience with pools, and knew only by rumor that we were buying something that required a LOT of care and maintenance. I hunted through bookstores for a guide I could learn from. I am a technical writer by profession, so I know a thing or two about how to present complex ideas to the innocent. Browsing through this volume I was impressed with the author's skill at getting ideas across (well structure informattion - here's the idea, heres' the basics, here's the gory details). I bought it on the strength of his organization and writing, not on the content (about which I knew zilch).
It is still in regular use 5 years later. YES, it is technical. YES, it sometimes provides way too much information for the novice. But if you have a brain and you can handle some complexity, this book is BRILLIANT. I knew nothing, and in very short order I learned what I needed for basic care. This book is a bible for pool maintenance. Over the years I've learned (from experience guided by this book) how to strip a DE filter, how to repair my Polaris pool robot, and more about water chemistry than I ever thought possible. This past summer ('07) it guided us through a plaster refinishing (pool is ~30 years old) and taught me how to restart the pool.
It IS written by a pool professional, FOR pool professionals, and even has advice on how to run a pool maintenance business (which is of zero interest to me). But if you can learn from a pro talking to other pros, this book is it.
The "Haynes" manual for pools.......2006-11-10
This book is to swimming pools what the "Haynes" car maintenance manuals are to your car. It contains all the information required to maintain your pool, even though probably someone else is going to do it for you. If you own a pool, it is worth reading the book to understand what the service technician should and shouldn't be doing, and when the pool is in need of help. It can also help you save some money by doing the work yourself. The book is entirely about maintaining a pool, not owning one. It is written in a friendly, readable style, and you can simply keep it as a reference manual to know what to do when things go wrong. If you are considering installing a pool or spa, this book will show you what you are letting yourself in for. If there is one omission in the text it is that the author ignores electric pool cleaning robots, though they are probably the most effective way of keeping the pool clean.
Save your Money.......2006-04-24
This book was a wasste of time and money. The book focuses more on being a pool professional then the actual "how-to" a pool owner needs to work on their pool. It has more information on changing a light fixtures and on bilking wealthy Malibu folks out of cash then actual useful information.
After reading this (useless!) book I went to my local library and reearched several books on the subject, there is a title called "What color is your pool?" That has lots of information for the first time pool owner. There may be other more technical guides our there, but this book has few drawings and illustrations, poor writing, and ultimately is lacking in adequate information.
Trust me...SAVE YOUR MONEY!
Helpful Tool.......2005-08-26
This book is a helpful tool for any pool owner or someone interested in having a pool.
NOT the best book to buy........2005-05-15
This is my first Amazon review, but I feel compelled to share this experience with others.
This book as said to be for the professional and the novice. It was said to contain all the information one could possibly need. It was suggested that you could take what you want from the weighty tome, and leave the rest. In reality the book is clearly NOT written for a new pool owner. In fact, its not written for an experience pool owner. The book was written for a pool repairman. Moreover, it does not contain the practicle information a pool professoinal would require to steer clients toward pool products.
Which cleaner should you get- Vacume or pressure driven? No answer here. What about a heating- Solar, oil, gas? No advice, no direction....
In fact, the book reads more like the diary of a pool man. About how one manufacurer was driven out of business by refusing to compromise quality, or how he cared for the pool of come Malibu celebrity.
Having recently purchased a home with an in-ground pool, I have read three books so far, and gotten quite and education. This book however failed in almost every regard. Finnally, the book deliniates ways of making money of customers as a pool professional. Information I simply have no use for.
Lastly, it bears mentioning that there is a quote on the book jacket from another Amazon reviewer "If you want to buy one book on swimming pools this is it!" Why not a quote from a noted pool authority or publication? Why quote some anonymous amzazon.com user like you or me? Most likely because there were no favorable reviews from newspapers or magazines.
This book was more then a waste of 30 dollars. It was also a waste of time. Unless you need to know how to change things like light fixtures in to pool. The book is not awful, so I gave it 2 stars, but I urge you to look elsewhere.

If you wanna be a real player read byrne's books and gamble that's it
Should be Advanced 3-Cushion Billiards.......2002-08-12
This book contains very little information that will be of use to an 8 or 9-ball player and close to half of the book is spent discussing specific 3-Cushion shots. I bought this book for the defense section hoping to learn some more about that but again it related to 3-Cushion rather than anything for 8 or 9-ball. Since I don't know the first thing about 3-Cushion billiards, I can't say whether or not the information about that is good or not.
Good companion to his Standard.......2002-04-26
...I don't claim any good talent in pool, but i do enjoy reading up on all the strategies and thought processes, and attempting to apply them when I play. Byrne's Advanced Technique isn't so much for advanced players only, but covers some specific topics that aer very interesting as well, such as the half-ball hit, the masse shot, the physics of the heavy tavern cueball, and so on. The section on Three-Cushion billiards is somewhat redundant, though, if you have his Standard. but it has some other topics, including more shots from master play, to keep one engrossed. He also writes some stories on several of the games greats, including three-cushion legends like Ceulemans and Blohmdal. Overall, a very good buy if you want to know as much about the game as you can.
advanced techniques?.......2001-02-25
If you've already read Byrne's standard book, don't waste your money on this book, unless you're really in to 3cushion billiards. There is very little new info in this book. Borrow it from a friend, or check it out in the library if you can. Some stuff is useful, but you'll be disappointed if you've already read Byrne's.
A must read for all cuesports enthusiasts........1999-10-17
This book by Robert Byrne is an unusual compilation of player profiles, peculiar shots and various other interesting articles covering the gamut of cuesports.
It's greatest feature is the discusion of various aspects of physics like collisions, transfer of side, the masse', diamond systems and much more.
It succesfully debunks many myths found in pool halls and in the myriad of physics illiterate instructional books written by(or ghost written for) star players.
The author is an experienced writer and nationally competitive 3 cusion billiards player.

Product Description
Mathematical billiards describe the motion of a mass point in a domain with elastic reflections off the boundary or, equivalently, the behavior of rays of light in a domain with ideally reflecting boundary. From the point of view of differential geometry, the billiard flow is the geodesic flow on a manifold with boundary. This book is devoted to billiards in their relation with differential geometry, classical mechanics, and geometrical optics. Topics covered include variational principles of billiard motion, symplectic geometry of rays of light and integral geometry, existence and nonexistence of caustics, optical properties of conics and quadrics and completely integrable billiards, periodic billiard trajectories, polygonal billiards, mechanisms of chaos in billiard dynamics, and the lesser-known subject of dual (or outer) billiards. The book is based on an advanced undergraduate topics course. Minimum prerequisites are the standard material covered in the first two years of college mathematics (the entire calculus sequence, linear algebra). However, readers should show some mathematical maturity and rely on their mathematical common sense. A unique feature of the book is the coverage of many diverse topics related to billiards, for example, evolutes and involutes of plane curves, the four-vertex theorem, a mathematical theory of rainbows, distribution of first digits in various sequences, Morse theory, the Poincaré recurrence theorem, Hilbert's fourth problem, Poncelet porism, and many others. There are approximately 100 illustrations. The book is suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers interested in ergodic theory and geometry. This volume has been copublished with the Mathematics Advanced Study Semesters program at Penn State.

A great book to read again and again and..........2006-01-02
In my opinion a great book about playing pool.
George explains in a funny, pedagogic and easy to understand way how to master the game of pool. Gives concrete hints on what to think about in your game, specially the nine "whenever possibles" and the way of thinking about the balls in a straight pool game: A,B,C and D balls where the A-balls are potable balls, B-balls gets potable when the A-balls are potted, C-balls are the balls you have to break up and for that you use the D-balls. Understand? read the book!
I have learned a lot from this book and still do. It's the only book that i have read over and over again. George has a way of writing that never gets boring or uninteresting.
Most of the book concentrates on straight pool but there's also chapters on nine-ball and 8-ball that is very learnful.
If compared to "the straight pool bible"(don't remember the author) this book beats it with horse lenghts.
I'll soon buy some more books by George, hope they are as good as this one.

Expert Straight pool insights.......2004-04-27
This book offers SUPERB insights into crossing 1 or 2 rack limits to breaks in straight pool. From ambitious novice to excellent player, you can learn a LOT by scanning a few pages. Straight pool, more than 8 or 9 ball, is a mental game and Fels does a marvellous and thorough job of explaining it.
Disappointing.......2001-09-05
Mostly straight pool strategy. Not what I was looking for.
Mr. Fels is subtle but profound........2000-11-08
I'm your regular pool player aficionado. I've been playing the game for a few years now and I'm still mesmerized by the tremendous simplicity of its complexity. How difficult can be using a stick to hit a ball that in turn will hit a second ball and drive it to a pocket? Yet, when you see a good pool player doing just that, time after time, game after game, you might be inspired to wonder how far you can progress in this fascinating game.
After reading just a few pages of Mr. Fels' book, Advance Pool: Techniques and Strategies for Mastering the Game, I went to my favorite pool hall and applied a few of his suggestions and advice. To my astonishment, I saw myself pocketing balls more often and with much more cue-ball control.
Of course, when you read: "The softest possible hit that will accomplish the various objectives of any given pool shot is the best possible hit", you know you have to pay attention. Mr. Fels' guidance is subtle but profound, just like the game of pool. No matter how skilful you are at billiards, I believe in this book you will find something that'll make your game better and, perhaps more important, much more enjoyable.
um...do not buy.......2000-09-07
As a student of the game of pool, I've had the opportunity to read several books on advanced pool. However, this one stunk so bad, I had to do my first review to save the rest of you from my mistake. Trust me folks, this one is for the trash can. It lacks substance, insight, and might be a bargain at $.99. If you're interested in learning valueable information, getting your moneys worth, and not waisting your time...pick up a copy of Byrne's "Advanced Technique in Pool and Billiards."

You get what you pay for.......2003-08-03
This small sequel to the Billiards for Beginners volume is really more for intermediate players. While a book like Byrned's Advanced or Play Your Best Pool will teach you a lot more, there are a handful of gems in here. My rule of thumb: Get every pool book you can find, because you'll learn at least one thing from each of them that the other authors forgot to write about. (This is especially true if you re-read them, more than once - you won't absorb every detail in every book the first time through. Absorb what you can, play for 6 months, and start re-reading; repeat). Anyway, yes, this book doesn't get very in-depth about anything (what do you expect for such a small publication?) But it's cheap. And at roughly the price of one (good) beer, how can you lose?
Don't waste your money!!!.......1997-06-18
This was certainly one of the worst pool books I
have ever read. I bought this book because it was
supposed to be for advanced players. There was absolutely nothing in this book that I didn't already know. And I am certainly not advanced enough to know everything about pool. It is more a book of fundamentals than anything else. The book by George Fels was 100 times better. I would definately not recommend this book
