This is an account of the hegemony of the most powerful state-supported chess juggernaut ever created, written at the apex of Soviet success. The book outlines the triumphs achieved by the Stalin-inspired drive to establish the USSR as the planet's leading chess dynamo. This is a hymn to the socialist utopia in which the goal of sporting success in general and chess victory in particular replace religion as the opium of the masses. The Soviet School of Chess is the Bible which recounts this movement, written by two experts who were positioned at the very heart of this grandiose initiative. Alexander Kotov represented the USSR in two World Championship Candidates Tournaments and went on to become a senior official of the Soviet Chess Federation. Mikhail Yudovich was a chess journalist and Correspondence Chess Grandmaster.
Very useful for many reasons.......2002-09-30
I would reccomend this book to anyone who is interested in studying and improving their chess. It gives a wonderfully interesting history of the soviet masters, with plenty of illustrative games. Then it also opens your eyes to the way that the top soviets increased their strength. I personally got more from this book than I did from the Think Like a Grandmaster series. afterwards i took a new look at the board in familiar opennings and thought of new ideas, and when I later did alittle research on them, I found that they were used by many of the top grandmasters of the 60's but have since gone out of fashion. the only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars, is cause comrad Kotov's voice gets on my nerves a little too much. I little bit too pro communism for my taste.
how the russians came to dominate world chess.......2002-07-23
the authors were at the very centre of the soviet chess programme and here they give thumbnail sketches of all the top russian champions and grandmasters as well as useful insights into the broader chess movement supported by the state which backed them up. the book is also valuable as an insight into soviet society and the type of conformism it demanded-for example petrosian is criticised for lack of fighting spirit-actually he had his own way of fighting and later became world chess champion.this edition is published by hardinge simpole press.
An excellent book.......2000-06-26
This book is an interesting combination of both quality games and history. It traces the development of the soviet chess shool right from the times of petrov down to the big k`s. Has very interesting games from all the big soviet players like petrov,chigorin,botvinnik,tal,kasparov,karpov to mention a few. Makes an interesting commentary on their styles of play, tries to analyze their weakpoints and gives some excellent games with detailed analysis. Back in the 80`S when i first learnt chess, i found it one of the most intersting books which made me delve deeper into chess. Believe me, buy this book and i assure you that you wouldnt want to part with it for a fortune. One of the gems of the Mir publishers

Excellent games - who cares about the propaganda?.......2000-01-15
I've had this book for several years (bought it in a used book store), and I keep coming back to it as a handy reference. Each chapter is essentially a profile of a different great Soviet chess player, with an interesting collection of photos. (I particularly like the photo of Bronstein, who looks like he's about to crack a joke - or he must be listening to one from Beliavsky.) Also, the games are instructive and well-annotated, and each player's style is discussed in depth. It's a very good introduction to the styles of the different (former) Soviet players, and an introduction to differences in chess styles in general. However, a chapter of Korchnoi is curiously missing - perhaps this book was published after he defected?
OK - so the title should instead be, "The Soviet Chess Culture," or "Chess in Soviet Culture," as it attempts to portray the Soviet players (Tal, Bronstein, Botvinnik, etc.) as representative of the Soviet chess "machine" which is apparently what made the USSR "great." Of course, all of this is propaganda and therefore total hogwash (perhaps chess was instead used by the Soviet population as a good way to escape the realities of life for a while, rather than uphold its culture?). Well, DUH, it's a Soviet-era book! What? Were you expecting something else? Of course, all the propaganda BS should be ignored - don't read it like a history book. There are plenty of history books for that. This is a chess book. Read it for the games.
However, the propaganda does affect the book to some extent, so I couldn't give it five stars - like omitting Korchnoi, for example. What would be interesting is for someone to publish a "second edition" of the book, with propagandist commentary replaced by accurate historical accounts which are still largely mysterious to the general public. For example, Tal vaguely mentions that he was denied access to several high-level non-Soviet events at certain times in his life in his "Games and Life of..." - but what actually happened? And we know - only recently for sure - that a Soviet hypnotist was recruited to stare at Korchnoi during his title match with Karpov. The truth is out there, but I wouldn't hold out for the "second edition" of this book if I were you...
Excellent games but laughable Soviet propaganda.......1999-12-13
A collection of games of the leading players of the leading chess nation in the world is bound to be instructive. This is why I've given it two stars. Names like Botvinnik, Smyslov, Keres, should give you an idea of the ultra-high class.
But I certainly couldn't have given it any more stars, because of the shameless Soviet propagandizing. It's difficult to believe that Kotov could have believed it himself. After all, in tournaments (e.g. Groningen 1946 and the Zürich 1953 Candidates), he defeated the leading Soviet players when they were in danger of being caught by foreigners. Clearly he was too honorable to throw the games.
It's really a joke claiming Alekhine as a true Soviet when he couldn't leave the new USSR quickly enough. It's more subtle but equally farcical to praise Chigorin and denigrate Tarrasch, when their hard-fought tied match in 1893 demonstrated that they were about even.
Finally, the whole title is absurd, as Larsen pointed out long ago - how could Tal and Petrosyan be part of the same `school'?
Actually, during the Gorbachev era, I was privileged to attend a Chess Seminar in Sukhumi, Georgia/Gruzia (then Georgian/Gruzinskaya SSR). The introductory lecturer (and a good one) GM Yuri Averbakh, former president of the USSR Chess Federation, outlined the history of chess theory. He attempted to explain away Larsen's remark by claiming that the Soviet School referred to a method of preparation. But in so doing, he committed the fallacy of equivocation - he had clearly previously been using the term `school' to refer to a definite chess style, e.g. `Italian School', `Classical School', `Hypermodern School'.
Unfortunately, even during glaznost it seemed that people were afraid to speak the truth. This didn't stop me from enjoying my time in the USSR immensely and learning from these undisputed experts.

Great textbook.......2006-10-04
I'm usually very critical of textbooks, but this one reads extremely well. It is clearly organized and progresses in a logical manner. The subject material is inherently difficult, but the authors do an excellent job explaining both the common-sense and mathematical basis for each topic. I have no formal background in finance or accounting but I'm doing well in a 300-level course with just this book to thank. Anyone who wants to educate themselves about stock/bond values, interpreting balance sheets, etc, would benefit greatly from this book.

The class is hard no matter what school you attend. The book is easy reading and has many great exercise for you to practice to help you understand the text. The exercises had help me tremendously.

This is a very good and updated book. It brings excelent cases and is well designed and easy to read.

I purchased this textbook for a class. The class is kind of advanced and I am having to teach myself from the book. Unfortunately, the book does not give very many examples and only shows the simplest equations then expects to be able to solve the harder ones. Overall, the book is not very helpful/ user friendly.

The book did not come with the CD (even though it was supposed to). It was noted on the packing slip that no CD was found. They should have contacted me instead of shipping the product. I had to pay shipping charges back to Owls Books. I WOULD NOT recommend using them.
