Secrets revealed.......2001-02-06
This book offers an in depth look at the life of an SFI character. It offers enough information for an entire intelligence campaign to be played. The book breaks SFI into two branches: Administration and Operations. Both branches are explained well. The structure of the Mission Team is given, and a section describing what a SFI officers does is included. The technology section offers many "James Bond" type toys. Intelligence Dossiers are given for many spies throughout the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, these descriptions are in depth and offer the narrator a wealth of ready to go NPC's. More traits and skills are offered, but few templates and no species templates. I was dissapointed that there were no complete adventures offered, but there are enough adventure seeds for the narrator to develop into full blown adventures and enough intelligence "hot spots" are offered in the "Locations" chapter to inspire the narrator's imagination. I was hoping for more information on Section 31, and I found the sections on the Obsidian Order and Tal Shiar to be somewhat lacking. This book receives a common complaint about the LUG products: black and white art work. It isn't bad artwork, but compared to the stills found in the core rulebooks and The Price of Freedom, it is lacking. Overall, a good solid book.
Top Secret !!.......1999-06-15
This book contains all the information you ever wanted to know about Starfleet Intelligence, and even discusses the infamous Section 31 briefly. Included in the back of the book are several ideas of Campaigns that might be run using Starfleet Intelligence characters, though there are no complete campaigns within the book. The primary drawbacks to this supplement are the same failings that Last Unicorn's "A Fragile Peace: The Neutral Zone Campaign" possessed, this book too is printed in black and white, and contains little by way of new character overlays or species templates. Although there are examples of characters who are members of the Cardassian Obsidian Order, and the Romulan Tal Shiar, it might have been helpful to have actual Species Templates for these kinds of characters included in the sourcebook.

Book Description
A revolutionary new resource that brings documentation product management ideas up to date
The 1994 bestselling classic Managing Your Documentation Projects set the industry standard for technical documentation. However, since then, much has changed in the world of information development. With this new title, JoAnn Hackos looks beyond the structured project of the 1980s and 1990s. Instead, she focuses on the rapidly changing projects of the 21st century and addresses how to introduce agile information development without neglecting the central focus of planning information design and development around the needs of information users.
As an information-development manager, you are expected to reduce costs and project time, do more work with fewer resources and less money, and increase the value of the information you deliver. Recognizing this, Hackos has carefully designed this book to help you do precisely that. She helps you make strategic decisions about information development and directs the discussion of project management toward smarter decision-making.
An update of the original 1994 Information Process Maturity Model (IPMM) presents you with a method by which you can compare the state of your organization to others, evaluate your current status, and then consider what is necessary in order to move to the next level.
Information Development offers a completely new look at best practices for all phases of the document development lifecycle, including:
- Managing a corporate information portfolio
- Evaluating process maturity
- Partnering with customers and developing user scenarios
- Developing team effectiveness and collaboration
- Planning and monitoring information projects
- Managing translation and production
- Evaluating project performance
- Managing for quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness

Admit that you are a wasteaholic.......2007-08-01
Any organization, large or small, that wants to get serious about growth should read this book, breathe it and master it. The first step is to admit you have a problem. "Hello, my name is Bob. I'm a wasteaholic."; "Hi Bob".
I used to HATE process. HATE HATE HATE. I didn't want to be constrained; I rationalized saying "well it is a waste of time to invest time in process, it is just needless bureacracy". I was a creative person, still am. Then 10 years later I realized I was wasting a lot of time because things weren't organized, there wasn't accountability, the projects were driving me, instead of me being on top of things.
Are you a wasteaholic? Answer this question: Do you feel on top of things?
If answer = yes, close browser window. If answer = no, order book.
Book is dead on.
Several years ago I interviewed for a staff position at Cornell University, in a dept. run by a guy who had spent a number of years in industry; I wanted to impress him, so I asked, "are there any books you'd recommend, out of all you've come across, about project management and content?" And he said "Managing Documentation Projects" -- which is the precursor to this book.
It rocks.
A truly recommendable read.......2007-06-15
In this book, JoAnn T. Hackos has compiled a great amount of useful information, "decorated" with many illustrating sample cases.
Well-structured, intelligible and applicable, "Information Development" is a welcome asset, although with 600 pages, it is nothing you read - least of all SHOULD read - overnight. :)
New book -- not 2nd edition.......2007-06-04
Please note that none of the reviews below are written about the 2006 new book on Information Development. The book is not a 2nd edition; it's an entirely new book with new content. The focus is on strategically managing a publications organization and effectively managing projects. The project management part of the book focuses on agile methods and managing topic-based writing activities.
Author has nothing to say and takes too long to say it.......2007-01-06
I bought this book because I liked the table of contents. I assumed this book would present concrete, actionable specifics on the subjects presented in the table of contents. I was disappointed.
Under information planning, this book only tells you that you should do it. Gee, thanks. Under estimating and scheduling - you should estimate future project resources and you should request new resources and fund innovation. Oh, boy. Yippee.
This book is an exercise in stating the blatantly obvious. I expected to see information on the nuts and bolts of producing technical documentation...I expected to see examples of budgets, examples of ways to create efficient systems for document production using single-sourcing, and to see examples of specific, important techniques for planning a document production process that allows for easy translation, revision, re-usability and transfer to different mediums. I expected to get a reference that would become well-worn on my desk. This book is as far from such a tome as it could possibly get while still being written in the English language.
I want to improve the efficiency of my documentation projects. I'd like to know about technologies (XML?, VBA?) that might help me with separating content from layout and improving reusability. Is that here? Nope. But you do get way too much talk about how you should acquire good tools that support your business goals. There is nothing about what those tools should be or what specifically would make them good.
One page tells you the difference between a "traditional" project and an "agile" project...things like: An agile project "responds to change" and has "minimal process documentation" as well as "reduced development schedules". That's nice. Who cares?
Implementing a Topic Architecture is the only section that even makes a move in the direction of specific, concrete, useful material. But even it leaves you thinking, "Well, duh...yathink?"
To sum up, this book tells you all the obvious things you ought to do...but that's it. It doesn't have anything to say about HOW you would actually do those things. I doubt the author has the foggiest idea how because I doubt she has a single hard skill to speak of. She definitely didn't write about any.

Too much like a pre-education college class.......2007-06-11
This book talks about interpersonal skills and personality styles in a textbook-like format. The content is the same as pre-education college classes. The book goes on and on about learning styles. The information is valuable if you are a complete donkey of a person (which some managers really are) and don't have a clue about how to relate to people. Yes, this book will be valuable to those who REALLY need it, but I say that if you are of average or above-average intelligence, have taken college psychology or pre-education/early childhood classes, and/or have had sales experience in your career, this book will be a big waste of time for you because you've already learned how to handle people.
Easy To Follow Concepts.......2007-06-10
The book features a few easy to follow classifications and concepts, and I especially like the positive messages for management. It is a quick read, perhaps sometimes a bit simplistic, but several valuable messages. For a little more in-depth approach tempered with some tougher management approaches, I would follow this up with Warriors, Workers, Whiners, & Weasels: Understanding and Using The Four Personality Types To Your Advantage
How to Be a More Effective Person and to Live a Better Life.......2006-05-23
For years I used to treat people in more or less a consistent way in my interpersonal interactions or in managing projects. After first reading this book about four years ago, this approach changed and I have now a much greater awareness of different personalities and how people are most comfortable. As a result I know I have become a better and more effective person in the work environment and also with with my family.
What is fairly unique about this book and what I like most is that it is simple, yet powerful. For example, just by looking at two measures, responsiveness (in the emotional sense) and assertiveness, one can figure out a lot about how to deal with and get the most out of people. Other interesting areas cover how different people learn and make decisions and how diverse personality types can work together to solve problems. Overall, there is a lot of very useful and effective advice in here.
To the authors - thank you for your great work! This has definitely made a very positive difference in my life.
a juvenile piece of tripe.......2003-10-16
This book is appropriate for grade-schoolers learning to work in groups/teams. The text offers little in terms of strategies, methods or techniques for managing people and instead focuses on identifying personality traits and working with personal space. A disappointment in all regards (It's also a very boring read).
Shelf Help.......2002-03-31
I purchased this book because in my job I encounter various personalities every day. Some of these personalities are something else and make work difficult for everyone. I wanted some ideas on what to do and how to help everyone involved with these difficult people. This book has offered some good ideas that I am willing to put into practice...who know where it could lead.

Helps Treat the Difficult U.S Tossed Salad Workforce........2004-12-09
Davis states in 'Fast Track to Waste Free Manufacturing': "The real purpose of Lean Manufacturing is to enlist the workforce in driving waste out of an operation."
From this statement we infer the critical nature the topic of 'The People Dimension' plays in the lean transformation. The people problems faced in implementing lean are rarely treated in any depth in Lean literature. In my opinion, these people problems are the "soft underbelly of implementing lean manufacturing in the U.S." A case in point. G.M. determined early in the 1980's that it's products were not competitive in price and quality with Toyota's products. G.M. then entered into a joint venture with Toyota (New United Motors Manufacturing Inc. - NUMMI) in order to learn the Toyota Production System (TPS) in exchange for providing a U.S. distribution channel to Toyota. Now, twenty years later, G.M. still has not involved it's workforce in continuous improvement activities to the extent Japanese auto makers routinely are able to do.
BUT YOU SAY - Toyota's American workers are just as productive as their native Japanese workers - NOT SO. The cycle time for the average Toyota product in America is still twice as long as that in a Toyota Japanese plant.
THE POINT IS, the homogeniety and dedication of the Japanese worker is such that the U.S. domestic car maker may never be able to match the price/quality of the Japanese made automobile.
Lean manufacturing processes require empowering the worker. Unless the worker is prepared and committed to taking on additional required responsibilites, the lean transformation will ultimately fail.
Recardo and Peluso's book 'The People Dimension' treats the difficulty that the U.S. 'Tossed Salad' workforce presents to the lean transformation effort.
No where else have I found topics such as: The communication strategy, Targeted education programs, Self directed work teams, Skill based pay systems (SBP). and especially, Organizational change management, treated as adroitly and fully in a lean model as they are treated in 'The People Dimension'.
This book is definitely one of a kind and works for me.
Relevance to the lean practitioner 7/10
Relevance to the lean manager 9/10
Clarity and organization 9/10
Original content 10/10

Eyeopener.......2006-11-06
I absolutly liked this book!
The author did a great job explaining what to do and HOW to do it.
It improved my own skills to train and guide employees on an individual basis. And that was beneficial to the whole company.
I highly recommend this book for anyone in a position of leadership, management and even employees with a vision.
Questions.......2006-08-24
This engaging book illustrates the value of questions in developing others, gathering information, and thinking through our daily activities. An easy read filled with good information.
Build Teams.......2006-05-31
(Full disclosure: this book contains a copy of the FunStandard.org which I maintain.) This book should be required reading for anyone thinking of managing or leading people, covering all the things you need to do to succeed, or, in other words, all of the things managers so often don't think about resulting in unnecessary failure. I particularly liked the chapter on building teams, providing a framework for doing so to avoid a mistake that often dooms projects before the first meeting is even held -- haphazard assembly of individuals, mistaking "organization chart" for "team". This book's distilled wisdom will make you a better manager in a very short time.
Easy read.......2006-03-16
It is amazing how very simple Stop Telling Start Leading is to understand. The material is in no way inferior, but is presented in such a simple manner, you can read it in one sitting.
New management book unlike any other.......2006-03-08

Most people appreciate the difference grandparents made in their lives. While their parents are much more concerned with how a child should be, their grandparents have the patience to create the space for the child to become who they really are. Basically it is the felt difference between emotional stress and emotional support.
The same is true for management books. Most management book authors are like parents, telling the child how it needs to be. And managers are like children, wanting to live up to expectations. Do you have friends or relatives who are a manager? Do you feel they could use some emotional support? After all, being a manager is quite often a challenge, and sometimes it is more than one can bear. These are the times when they need some kind of support.
Here's the good news. My friend and mentor, Frank Kanu, has published a management book that will bring your manager friend the emotional support (s)he sometimes needs. Here's an example:
"When there's no plan, deadlines are missed, budgets are overextended, customers are unhappy, employees are angry and exhausted, and managers have to clean up the mess." (p128)
I remember the time when i was an employee, and i read "the Dilbert Principle" by Scott Adams. And for the first time in my life i felt the emotional support, coming right out of this book.
This book by Frank Kanu, "Stop Telling... Start Leading !" is such a book. If you would like to give your friend the emotional support that you think (s)he deserves, then by all means, buy the book and give it to her or to him. The book is available from Amazon.com.
As a gift for you, i will throw in a free PDF version of my own book "Bilocality and the inner world of attention". I feel that this way, we've all done just this little extra, to help those who need us most.
Let's continue improving our life and those we care about.
Warmest regards, Ron
