Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The very best crosswords!.......2006-12-26

These puzzles are brilliant - there is such satisfaction in solving each twisted clue - really great brainteasers! Keep up the good work Daily Telegraph! I've been doing these puzzles for about 30 years! I never tire of them - perfect for long car trips.

5 out of 5 stars Exercise your brain!.......2006-03-20

Research shows that the brain should be exercised just as the rest of the body is exercised for long-term health and function. English crosswords do more than test your trivia knowledge; they make you look into word origins, puns, anagrams, and regional language, as well. The Daily Telegraph puzzles are challenging and amusing, giving you 2 clues to each answer so you know when you have found the right word or phrase. One really gets better with practice, but they remain challenging for me after 40 years of doing them. Carry them around in your pocket for those times when you are waiting for an appointment, and see the time race by!

5 out of 5 stars Comments on Daily Telegraph Cryptics.......2002-03-04

Daily Telegraph puzzles are more challenging for me than American cryptics. There are of course plenty of unfamiliar words, phrases, and abbreviations, such as lorry, bleeper, tanner (sixpence), billy can, jack it in, and CID. There are also the differences in spelling, such as labour, realised, and defence. However the most challenging part of these cryptics is that the rules are not as strict.

A lot of clever non-cryptic definitions are used, such as "shocking swimmers" (eels), "the one that got away" (escapee), and "a child of four" (quadruplet). Also mixed in are Shakespeare quotations with missing words, such as "There is pansies, that's for _____" (Hamlet). Answer: thoughts.

Container clues are allowed to have extraneous words, as in "Having nothing to do, some get paranoid - let it get them", where "idle" is contained in "get paranoid - let it get them".

The definition and the wordplay sometimes overlap or are not clearly separated, as in the clue for "animation": "I'm in a state of liveliness". "State" is used twice: the wordplay is "im" in a state "a nation" and the definition is "state of liveliness".

In double definition clues, sometimes one definition covers only part of the answer, as in the clue for "pilgrim": "Devout learner with a sombre expression". In this clue, "devout learner" means "pilgrim", but "a sombre expression" means "grim". "With" is a hint that "grim" lies within "pilgrim".

&lit clues are sometimes diabolical, as in the clue for "storm troupers": "Did they mount Hitler's lightning offences? In this clue, "troupers" are mounted, and "storm" has lightning, and the rest of the words in the clue are extraneous.

Worse, the answers in the back give only the words that go in the diagram, with no explanation of the wordplay.

The binding of this book is inferior, being suitable only for books that are intended to be read at a few sittings. I am halfway through solving the puzzles, and many pages have already fallen out.

No other business rivalry has captured the public imagination quite like the one between Netscape and Microsoft. And for good reason. It pits the world's richest corporation against a relatively recent startup. The implications of this battle--for everything from electronic commerce to network communications--extend well into the next millennium. Competing on Internet Time, by Michael A. Cusumano and David B. Yoffie, is the definitive blow-by-blow analysis of Netscape's battle with Microsoft, starting with the founding of Netscape in 1994 through the summer of 1998, just as Microsoft was about to enter the courtroom with the Justice department over its alleged monopolistic practices.

Based on a series of interviews with Netscape employees and others, Competing on Internet Time is more than a breathless corporate biography. Rather, the authors draw lessons from the mistakes and victories that both Netscape and Microsoft have suffered and enjoyed in their war for 'Net turf--in terms of browsers, server software, and portal space. The authors come up with some surprising conclusions. For example, in examining the competitive strategies of both companies, Cusumano and Yoffie conclude that Microsoft, more than Netscape, exhibited what they call a "judo flexibility." Here they point to Microsoft's now famous December 7, 1995 Internet Day announcement of the company's embrace-and-extend strategy and its subsequent sacrifice of MSN in a deal with AOL--prime examples of how Microsoft redefined the battle in a way that avoided a direct confrontation with Netscape but nevertheless placed them center stage in the fight for Internet mindshare. The authors also go into fascinating detail about how each company operates--from the hiring of staffers to the conception, development, and marketing of products.

But this book is more than just about the conflict between Netscape and Microsoft. Anyone interested in how network-based businesses grow and change will find Competing on Internet Time a glimpse into the not-too-distant network economy. It belongs on the bookshelf of every Internet junkie and entrepreneur. --Harry C. Edwards

                  Book Description

Competing on Internet time means competitive advantage can be won and lost overnight. In this penetrating analysis of strategy-making and product innovation in the dynamic markets of commercial cyberspace, bestselling Microsoft Secrets co-author Michael Cusumano and top competitive strategy expert David Yoffie draw vital lessons from Netscape, the first pure Internet company, and show how it employs the techniques of "judo strategy" in its pitched battle with Microsoft, the world's largest software producer.

With a new afterword updating the events of the year following publication of the hardcover edition, Competing on Internet Time is essential and instructive reading for all managers, engineers, and entrepreneurs who want to succeed in ultra-fast-paced markets. Managers in every high-tech industry will discover a wealth of new ideas on how to create and scale up a new company quickly; how to compete in fast-paced, unpredictable industries; and how to design products for rapidly evolving markets.

                  Download Description

When Marc Andreessen and Jim Clark founded Netscape in 1994, they were the first to envision how the Internet could revolutionize conventional ways of using computers, distributing software, communicating with other people, and conducting business. Now managers in similar industries will discover how Netscape -- the first pure Internet and World Wide Web company, designs and creates basic web products and develops strategies to compete with its two giant rivals. Just as Michael Cusumano's highly praised Microsoft Secrets opened up the inner workings of that company, so Competing on Internet Time exposes the very heart of Netscape -- based on 40 extensive interviews with key officers and employees of the firm. Managers everywhere will want to absorb these valuable lessons from the fastest growing software company in history and put them to work in their organizations now -- before the competition does.

You've already heard about this book, even if you haven't seen it in the stores. The authors were threatened with a subpoena by Microsoft as the company was going into court to fight the Justice Department. Bill Gates's minions wanted access to tapes of the authors' interviews. The judge denied the request, and the publishers rushed the book into print while the headlines were fresh.

While that little battle has garnered a lot of press, not much has been said about the book's actual contents. Well, they're fascinating. The book is packed with the intimate details of how Netscape rose in spite of having to battle behemoth Microsoft. The gist of the authors' take is that being fast is not enough. If you want to compete and win on Internet time, you need smart tactics and a grasp of the more traditional principles of the pre-Internet world: vision, leadership, innovation, quality, barriers to entry, and so on. Microsoft and Netscape experienced setbacks, the authors conclude, because of "failures in execution." They add that both Microsoft and Netscape are guilty of having been too greedy (Netscape for cash, Microsoft for market share).

The stresses and problems of Internet giants may not relate directly to your company, but this saga will reaffirm the core values we all treasure. It shows that execution is everything--and that being fast is often just another way to ramp up the risks.

                  3 out of 5 stars Dull.......2002-03-06

Probably fine as a business tome, but as an entertaining read, I found this a failure. I hardly got through the first few pages; the books starts with a long, obvious and patronising exposition about how internet has transformed our lives and what a revolution it's been. It reminded me a lot of "The Road Ahead" by Bill Gates.
Microsoft has been commercially successful, but at the cost of integrity. It has none whatsoever. This may indeed be Microsoft's downfall in the end, because the hatred towards this company is reaching a fever pitch. More and more users will realise that they can get by using other operating systems and products, supported by companies who have a less selfish vision for the future of computing.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, objective look at the Browser Battle.......2001-12-19

One thing that I especially enjoyed about this book is that it almost completely avoided any gratuitous Gates/Microsoft bashing that appears to be vogue these days. Instead, Cusumano and Yoffie take the reader on a detailed yet interesting dissection of the organizations and decision making processes of the top brass at both Microsoft and Netscape. I also liked the way the authors would candidly point out where bad decisions/strategies were made, but fairly analyzed why they failed, and why they might have seemed like good decisions at the time. The allusions and comparisons to judo strategy in business were interesting as well.

4 out of 5 stars Focus and Execution (not!).......2001-11-08

These two business school professors (...) interviewed many people at Netscape and elsewhere. Though the conclusions do not come through as strongly in the book as they might, we learn that Netscape made three major mistakes: 1) it did not focus and execute on a long-term strategy, 2) it's software engineering practices were not as good as Microsoft's, and 3) it's software engineers were not as talented as Microsoft's. The biggest mistake was Netscape kept changing its mind about what business it was in. As a result, it was not able to execute hard enough and long enough to win.

Focus and Execution are key element of any business success!

                  5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-03-15

Michael A. Cusumano and David B. Yoffie have written a play-by-play of the competition between Netscape and Microsoft in an enormously detailed book that became an instant classic. Adding to the insider scoop, the authors take the opportunity to show readers how they can apply the "lessons" from this historic corporate battle to their own businesses in the context of today's fast-paced world, which runs on "Internet time." Critically acclaimed, the book is filled with facts, figures, insights and strategies, and manages to do it all without drowning in tedium. We at getAbstract highly recommend this book to people in all business. It's exceptionally well written and flows like a good adventure saga, which it is. (getAbstract note: Despite its commendable Judo tactics, Netscape in late 1998 was acquired by America Online Inc. in a deal that was roundly viewed as a final victory for Microsoft in the browser war.)
