    Book Description

This is the only quiz book of its kind on Shakespeare, based on 100 of Shakespeare's greatest quotations as chosen by the authors! The quotations, at least one from each play, are introduced through short quizzes, grouped into sections with titles like 'Love and Lust,' 'Epiphanies,' and 'The Bestiary.' The simple quizzes are fun and interactive, designed for both novices and experts. The 100 quotations that form the basis of the book have an enormous range and deal with all the great subjects of poetry - love, loss, loveliness, despair, resignation, hope, hate, wit, humor, the beauty of the natural world, and so on. As the tie that binds the quizzes to the commentaries, the 100 quotations were selected to highlight just what Shakespeare was up to in each play - a unique and fun approach that anyone interested in Shakespeare will enjoy!

The Quiz section is followed by light commentaries, short essays on each play designed for all levels of Shakespearean lore. The emphasis is on giving a context to the quotations and showing how the language works in terms of drama and poetry. Each commentary offers a window into the play. The structure of the book makes it versatile: it can be randomly dipped-into for pleasure, or read right through as a very short yet complete introduction to Shakespeare's plays.

      3 out of 5 stars For Die-Hard Fans Only!.......2003-01-07

This very slender book is not a bad afternoon read, but ultimately it fails in what it attempts to do.
The author himself comes off as pompous and disengaging, as his "trivia" book is little more than a brief collection of personal opinions of his favorite Christmas Carol versions. These thinly veiled reviews lack the calibre of even your local TV Guide synopses. The only real trivia examples here are in classroom style question-exercises included at the end of each chapter! While I have no problem with this, the author postures himself as the true expert on A Christmas Carol with no real exposition as to why said versions are his favorite! I am giving it three stars, though, as the subject matter remains enjoyable no matter how clumsily presented.
Also worth noting- The recent Patrick Stewart version is omitted from this collection. Sacrilege!

      5 out of 5 stars Highly Enjoyable.......2002-10-30

What a fun book to read. I love 'A Christmas Carol,' and this book puts everything 'Carol' right at your fingertips. For the most part, I agree with much of what the author says, but I feel that 'An American Christmas Carol' and 'Scrooged' deserve higher ratings. I also prefer the George C. Scott version above all others.
This book is broken down so the reader will not only be able to read about the many different film versions of a 'Carol' that have been released, but the cartoon, television, and even the original book version is reviewed as well. An example of what I learned is that I had no idea that there was a version starring Sir Seymour Hicks filmed back in 1935 until I read about it in this book. I then searched out and found a (rather poor, unfortunately) copy of THAT version. There is also a small biography of Mr. Dickens, so the reader will understand where many of his ideas for his novels came from.
The writing style is quick, informative (LOTS of trivia and pictures throughout!), and upbeat.
I don't know if this has been updated to include the Patrick Stewart version or not, as I purchased this book back in '97. I will definitely pick up a revised copy should one become available.
      A great bathroom book!

4 out of 5 stars God bless us, Every one !.......2000-06-10

If you're a Fan of Dickens Christmas Carol, like I am, you might enjoy this book.

It has Chapters on Dickens, the story and it's creation and the many Film, T.V, and Cartoon versions. I don't agree with the author that the movie Scrooged is so avfull, I'm not saying it's a Great movie But I found it quite Funny actually.

But apart from that this is a Fun Book to read around Christmas time when you have reeread Christmas Carol, watched all your Christmas Carol Videos, stuffed yourself full of Marsipan, Chocolate and Sherry and been visited by the Ghost of Christmas past.

      5 out of 5 stars SARAH E GEORGE.......1999-03-19

i enjoyed reading this book as it shows a change in a mans heart. The book has a lot of humor in it and is understood by people of all ages you can read it time and time again and never get board. I like the way he sees things in a differend view after he had a visit from the three spirits.

                Book Description

In this quirky and intriguing book, John Sutherland has conveniently gathered together thirty-four nagging little questions, puzzles, errors, and enigmas from some of the best-loved examples of Victorian fiction. Readers often have stumbled upon seeming mysteries in their favorite novels. Why,
for example, is the plot of The Woman in White irrevocably flawed? (The timing of the crime is off.) Is the hero of George Eliot's Middlemarch illegitimate? (Probably, although he was later legitimized.) Why does the otherwise sensible Jane Eyre give in to a sudden and unexplained outburst of
superstition? (Charlotte Bronte, in reality, had a similar experience.) What is the real reason we find The Picture of Dorian Gray so disturbing? (There is an overwhelming emphasis on the sense of smell.) These answers and more can all be found in John Sutherland's entertaining and maddening book.
When it comes to literary criticism there's really nothing quite like the joys of close reading and good-natured inquiry. This is the spirit in which Is Heathcliff A Murderer was conceived and executed. Rather than trying to catch great authors in mistakes, Sutherland usually turns up perfectly
plausible reasons for the seeming anomalies.
Everyone who reads nineteenth-century novels will thoroughly enjoy John Sutherland's exploration of the seemingly unanswered, and each chapter is a direct link to one of Oxford's World's Classics.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More fun with literary mysteries.......2006-04-26

Sutherland's books are great fun for fans of 19th century novels and literary nitpickers. He examines mysteries, plot holes, and unresolved questions in many classic novels. Sometimes Sutherland discovers an answer in the text or in history, other times the puzzles simply cannot be solved. Yet even in these cases, Sutherland can use the mystery to shed light on the writing and editing process. "Is Heathcliff a Murderer?", like the other books in this series, is a thoroughly enjoyable companion to the classic works of English literature.

5 out of 5 stars A riveting (and educational!) read.......2001-08-28

Blame it on New Jersey public schools, if you like. I find they're always a handy scapegoat. Because - though I blush to confess it - I first came across Emily Bronte's classic tale of undying love and people with confusingly similar names, Wuthering Heights, when I saw the glamorous, romantic 1939 film of that story, and not when I read the actual grim and gritty 1847 novel. This may explain why, for a long time, when I thought of that novel's hero, Heathcliff, I thought of a heroic-looking, sad-eyed Laurence Oliver, and consequently held this famous brooder in rather high esteem. I do so no longer, and the reason why can be summed up in two words - John Sutherland. This professor and scholar has, in Is Heathcliff a Murderer?, put some of the greatest novels of Western literature under a microscope, and found out all of their inconsistencies and flaws. He looks at classic literature from a new perspective, asking intriguing questions about its novels, and offering solutions to the problems they raise - putting new spins onto books which most people probably feel that they already know inside out. I, for example, thought I knew something about the character of Heathcliff, until I read Sutherland's essay about him, and his various deeds and doings. After reading this book (which discusses works by Bronte, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, and George Eliot, amongst many others) I can guarantee that you will look at some of your favorite books in an entirely new way - see depths, puzzles, and inconsistencies in them that you never saw before. I, for one, now greet Laurence Olivier's entrance on the screen in Wuthering Heights with a boo and a rather rude hand gesture, rather than a pinkening of cheek and a fluttering of lash. Such is the power of Is Heathcliff a Murderer?

5 out of 5 stars Well, is he?.......2000-01-09

Of course not, but don't let the fact that I find that one essay of Sutherland's unconvincing deter you from buying this book. There are *so many* marvelous puzzles in this book besides that one inside. Is Helen Graham illegitimate? Was he Popenjoy? What is Jo sweeping? Read to find out.

Anyone mystified by stock options or who simply dismisses them as too speculative will find Getting Started in Options an excellent first read on the subject. Beginning with the premise that it's not the complexity of the investment but that of its language that makes options difficult for new investors to understand, author Michael C. Thomsett has created a guided tour through the lexicon. The result is a nontechnical introduction to these specialized markets.

The book carefully and completely defines the terminology, explains options investing step by step, and presents strategies so that it is easy to understand at each level of risk involved. Choosing the right stock, buying and selling options, and combining techniques are all covered in increasing complexity, but this is a book for beginners, and those with basic knowledge of the subject will want to seek out more advanced reading.

The biggest drawback of this book is that, for some reason, the text is printed in green ink, making it somewhat more difficult to read and probably impossible for those who are green-colorblind. Publisher, take note! --Scott Harrison

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for anyone interested in getting into the options world.......2007-08-29

I bought this book with no knowledge of how options worked. I had read "When Genius Failed" about LTCM, the worlds biggest hedge fund which failed in the 90's. The book had discussed options a lot and had sparked an interest in me.
I had wanted to get into trading options for a while and had tried reading about them on investopedia and various other sites. Finally I decided to settle for this book. Options is an awesome book for beginners like myself. Thomsett smoothes out Options and really makes you understand everything from the basics to more advanced options strategies. The book is filled with scenarios to support each new topic and is not dry or heavy reading.

I actually was reading it the other night on the train on the way home from a concert. The man across from me commented that it wasn't exactly light reading for a late train ride. I hadn't even thought about it that way. Options can be intimidating and textbook style books can be boring, however this iis not true for this book. I strongly reccomened it for the prospective options trader with little knowledge on the subject.

Buy this book if want to know more or anything about options. Great beginners book taught me the basics quick. Plenty of examples and graphs. When you read this book you will be surprised by the amount of risk that can be removed or added on. Options are less risky than you think.

Regardless whether you're daytrading or not, it's full of layman's terminology in order to understand the complex nuts and bolts of trading in general. Yes, there can be information overload as one reviewer stated ... which is why I found this book invaluable. It's technical, without being stodgy and complicated. The sidebar definitions are fabulous for quick access to terms. I found it to be logically and succinctly organized ... and allows the reader to learn as little or as much as they need. Ms. Bentley states up front that daytrading may not be for the lighthearted, but even daytraders needed to start somewhere. With many individuals trading from their desktop computers, it's important to learn as quickly as possible with as much correct information as possible. Take one trade at a time, utilize the directions ... do the "faux" tutorials on other sites where you don't have to lose money. Then if you find daytrading IS for you, "Online Day Trading" can be your bible. Thanks greatly, Ms. Bentley ... it helped me considerably!

4 out of 5 stars Read it, but You will need more specific strategies.......2005-08-04

This book is ok for a trader that needs to start from scratch. But you will be needing more specific trading strategies.

Keep in mind that the stock market doesn't really care if you are beginner. The rules and the trading opportunities are the same for every one. When you trade you compete against more seasoned traders, therefore you MUST go beyond the basics and employ a clear strategy to make your buy and sell decisions.

There are many "fantastic" strategies outhere, but you need to test them in order to discover which ones help you the most. That's part of your homework as a stocktrader. Test, test and test again.

Complicated systems that rely on a "boat load" of technical indicators can make you slow, and being slow in this game can be as dangerous as not knowing what to do in the first place.

I think the worst thing that can happen to a beginner trader is to get information overload. It's better to go step by step, and test a simple strategy that can show you how to focus on concrete ways to make money.

Fortunatly there are some good sites on the web today that can show you how to trade in a practical and effective way. One of those sites is Stress Free Traders ( StressFreeTraders com)

In the end, day trading is all about buying and selling according to your knowledge FILTER. Once you master and follow your proven filter parameters like a clock, you can expect to start making serious amounts of cash on a consistent basis.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2004-11-26

This book was a waste of money. It's meant for beginners that aren't familiar with the terms and concepts of stock trading in general. If you don't already know these terms or the basic concepts you shouldn't attempt to day trade. If you do know these terms and concepts, then this book is a waste. The day traders survival guide is a much better intro book and I highly recommend it over this one. Other recommended trading books to start you off are High Probability Trading by Marcel Link and Trading for a Living by Alexander Elder.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for explaning the nuts and bolts of day trading.......2003-11-29

I wanted a book that would take me step by step through all the technical day trader jargon and explain what all of it meant. Getting Started in Online Day Trading by Kassandra Bentley was just what the doctor, or in this case, the beginning day trader ordered. She takes a very solid approach to explaining what the stock market is all about, what day trading is all about, the procedures of doing day trading and the pitfalls of day trading. She is not shy in pointing out other books in order to gather good day trading information. This shows that she is very open to learning herself. Her book does a good job of not assuming that the reader already knows all about day traderese. There are plenty of sidebar notes that refer to terms and phrases within each chapter. This is a very good way of reinforcing what your have just read. One specific area that was very clear in explaination are the terms bid and ask. While other books use these terms almost interchangably and do not explain correctly who is the buyer and who is the seller, she does an excellent job of clarification on this subject. This point is probably obvious to old pros, but her insight that a beginner is not savy to these nuiances is good thinking on her part. She also goes into some detail on charting and day trading methodology, but not too much in depth. If anything, this was the only negative about this book. However, after reading other books on day trading, I believe that this book is the most straight forward and understandable of all of them. The book is well thought out and very concise.

                    Book Description

In this article, Timothy A. Luehrman presents a framework that can bridge the gap between the practicalities of real-world capital projects and the higher mathematics associated with formal option-pricing theory. His step-by-step approach maps out the exact relationship between a project's characteristics and the five variables that determine the value of a simple call option on a share of stock. By going through these steps, executives not regularly steeped in finance can discover value hidden in their projects that their standard discounted cash flow analysis would overlook. The analogy between financial options and corporate investments that create future opportunities is both intuitively appealing and increasingly well accepted. Executives readily see that today's investment in R&D, or in a new marketing program, or even in a multiphased capital expenditure can generate the possibility of new products or markets tomorrow. But for many, the leap from the puts and calls of financial options to actual investment decisions has been difficult and deeply frustrating. The calculations required to value real options have been dauntingly complex, and practical how-to advice on the subject has been scarce and mostly aimed at specialists, preferably with Ph.D.s in finance. Luehrman's methodology is designed to be used by general managers, not technical specialists. It deliberately sacrifices absolute precision in order to generate a number "good enough" to provide executives with valuable insight into their most important and complex investment decisions.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Skype add-ons and tweaks to get to to work the way you want.......2006-04-20

Skype is a simple to implement Voice Over IP (VOIP) solution for the average computer user. If you are tired of long-distance charges, want to be able to tell when someone is online and you can call them, chat in a secure, encrypted environment, engage in video chatting with others, or call someone who has a regular phone system at substantially reduced rates then Skype may be the product you need. This book covers installation, configuration, and basic usage as well as configuring advanced features and personalizing your Skype. While this is useful, I found the software to be so user friendly that it was easy to figure out most of this by just exploring the basic options of the system. That being said Chapters seven and eight were well worth the price of the book by themselves. These chapters cover software and hardware add-ons that can greatly enhance your Skype system and make it work the way you would like it to. The final two sections of the book cover setting up Skype in a business environment and writing custom interfaces to it by accessing the Skype API. This section includes important information on how to set up Skype behind a firewall. Skype Me is a highly recommended purchase and a great way to access the VOIP world for anyone with a computer and good Internet access speed.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Skype book.......2006-03-13

Skype Me! is the perfect introduction to Skype for users of all skill levels. It could serve as an example of how to write a product-centric book that delivers real value. The text is well written, clear, and focused. The material becomes progressively complex as the reader moves from learning about Skype, to installing it, to using it, to extending it into areas I hadn't previously considered. Anyone who wants to get the most out of Skype should read Skype Me!

I believe Skype is an incredibly intuitive and simple piece of software. I didn't spend much time with the first four chapters of the book, since I think the ease of installing and using Skype is one of its main attractions. Beginning with Ch 5, however, author Michael Gough started expanding my sense of what could be done by Skype. With advanced features in Ch 6, software add-ons in Ch 7, and hardware accessories in Ch 8, I was entering new territory. The material was well-covered.

I have no real concerns with Skype Me! I have a minor issue with the author's suggestion on p 270 that using a 900 MHz cordless phone is a sign they need to be "upgraded". A 900 MHz cordless phone is a great way to avoid interference in the 2.4 GHz range used by modern wireless networks and newer cordless phones. I would have also liked some expert commentary by a security professional regarding controlling Skype in the enterprise.

Overall I highly recommend Skype Me! I would feel comfortable sharing this book with my parents as a way to encourage them to try Skype. I would also share it with friends who want to tinker at the edges of traditional Skype usage.

5 out of 5 stars The Skype Book Everyone Needs to Read.......2006-03-10

Skype Me! is a book that everyone needs to have. It's less technical than Skype Hacks, which makes it more accessible to non-techies. Gough starts off with basic lessons about VoIP, Peer-to-peer technology (as it's used in VoIP), even Skype security. These basics will help anyone who is looking at setting up Skype in their home.

Installation is covered in Chapter 2. Gough gives detailed instructions on testing individual computers setups to make sure that Skype will work properly, and shows how to install Skype on Windows, Pocket PC, Mac OS X, and Linux. Then, in chapter 3, he covers the basics of using Skype.

Gough spends a lot of time on using Skype from Pocket PCs, even Pocket PC cell phones and smart phones. This is something I'd never thought about, honestly - my cell phone bill is pretty small, and we've got a good family plan. I can see where people who use a lot of cell phone minutes each month could save some money.

Skype Me! also goes into detail when it comes to implementing Skype in a business setting. This is one area where I think that Skype is being under-utilized. There's a perception that Skype is for home users, but isn't powerful enough for enterprise use, but it's clear that Skype is a lot more powerful than people think. There's a lot of potential for business use - especially when you look at the call center hack that I mentioned in the review of Skype Hacks.

One disappointment I had with Skype Hacks was that it didn't really talk much about the Skype API. Skype Me! does this in chapter 14, and goes into enough detail that people with a computer background will be able to take advantage of the API in customizing their own installation of Skype. Skype Me! also goes into more detail in discussing the various Skype-enabled devices that are available, or will soon become available. Gough includes mini-reviews of a lot of popular Skype hardware add-ons that will make your Skype experience much more pleasant - and productive.

For new users, Skype Me! is a valuable addition to their library. The fact that Michael Gough is the guy who runs SkypeTips.com and is constantly adding material at that site is just another reason to get this book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Bye-Bye Phone Company!.......2006-02-10

"Skype Me" is an excellent book for both beginners and advanced users of this free Voice over IP (VoIP) application. With easy instructions for downloading, installing, and using on any system, Skype is remarkably effective, but simple. It allows you to talk by voice in computer-to-computer conversations, conferencing, and even video capabilities with the necessary security features to protect your conversations.
This "family and friends" phone plan could put the phone companies out of business - except to bring us the DSL line. I've seen my wife use Skype to conference with her local partner and their Australian customer.
While basics are great, there's plenty here for the more advanced users including using Skype with other hardware and software (eg, wireless devices like cell phones). The authors also walk you through the security aspects of Skype - absolutely necessary these days.
Overall, a great book to own and keep handy as a reference for expanding your cyber knowledge.

This is an excellent walkthrough of Skype all the way from getting started to using special phones and other VoIP appliances. I'm impressed by the depth of the coverage, and the quality of the writing. This is easily the best book I've seen on Skype.
