I would enjoy more of these large print Simon & Schuster puzzle books. The book props up, the print is clear and the puzzles are challenging. I would enjoy the rest of the series whenever available.

I bought this as a present for my parents because they like to do crossword puzzles together. The large print crossword puzzles make it easier for two people to work on a crossword puzzle at the same time. And, of course, the NY times puzzles are excellent.

I bought this for my 91 year old Grandmother for Christmas. She has always enjoyed reading, and loves word games to keep her mind active. Even though she needs to write down that I visited so she can remember to tell others who came to the house, she can still do a mean crossword puzzle! She said she'd be doing them all year until next Christmas!

I purchased this book as a gift that fills a certain need. My mother-in-law LOVES crossword puzzles. Recently, however, she has had a serious loss of vision. This book gives her the challenge of newspaper crosswords while providing her with the fun of maintaining a passion. Bravo!

Most large-print crossword books are reprints of puzzles which first appeared elsewhere and have been resized for the large-print market. But now there is a book of original puzzles specifically developed for the large-print community. Not Your Typical Large-Print Crosswords #3: Quotes, Quips, and Proverbs contains fifty original puzzles guaranteed to please solvers at all skill levels. Each puzzle has a theme which spells out a quote or proverb which may either amuse or inspire. Sometimes you'll identify the quote and use it to complete the crossing words. Other times the quote won't reveal itself until you have finished the rest of the puzzle. Either way, you will be challenged and entertained.
Another feature of the book is that it does not require the solver to know obscure authors or random Academy Award winners to fill the grids successfully. That's not to say that the puzzles are easy, though. There are plenty of misleading clues, double meanings, and trivia questions to keep you on your toes. But overall, a good general knowledge and an appreciation for wordplay are all that is required to enjoy the book.
Not Your Typical Large-Print Crosswords #3 has earned the seal of approval from the National Assocation for Visually Handicapped (N.A.V.H). The book is in 8-½" x 11" format printed on off-white, reduced-glare paper. Grid squares are approximately ½" in size. Theme squares which make up the quote or proverbs are identified by a gray background. This makes it particularly easy to pick out the puzzle theme from the overall grid. N.A.V.H. reviewed and approved the page layout, text fonts and sizes to insure their appropriateness for the large-print community. The answer key also has oversized grids for readability.

This book provides a wonderful range of challenging and creative crosswords in an easy-to-use presentation. We recently did a few puzzles with our children and were very impressed that the answers and topics were both appropriate and interesting for everyone - initiating lots of side conversation. We found that not only is it easier to read the larger text, but it's much easier to write the answers in the larger squares. Best of all, when you lay the book out on the table, everyone can see the answers making it a perfect group activity.

Having attended a book review with Dr.'s Sleezer and Russ-Eft in Indianapolis recently, I was intrigued with the book and thought I would give it a go.
This work is very well-organized! My favorite part is that the authors make it easy to use the book as a reference to the Needs Assessment process by providing an index of what you're looking for and where to find it. Additionally, a CD is provided with a host of needs assessment tools that, so far, appear very useful!

I rely on this resource a lot to get started on organizational needs assessment. No information about cost/benefit analysis, etc. but lots of other great information!

I am a technical trainer of 10 years, and manage a group of four.
This is a great book for anyone looking for best practice approaches to a variety of needs assessment situations. Gupta's chapters are organized by the common type(s) of needs assessments, and each chapter breaks down the component steps that need to be taken to complete the assessment.
I think one of the real gems of the book is that she provides lots of examples of needs assessment interview questions, surveys, training plans, etc. on a floppy disk attached to the back of the book, which you can save to computer and work from to build your own stuff. It saved me some design time, and gave my assessment a "kick start" in the right direction.

Kavita Gupta wrote a book that is a must-have for anyone desiring an overview of the multiple ways needs assessment can occur. Gupta begins by setting the context of needs assessment, attending first to what needs assessment is and where it fits into the training or performance improvement scheme. By overviewing the works of Gilbert, Kaufman, Rossett, and others, the author creates a very usable comparison. Persons trying to decide what type of needs assessments are best for their situation can quickly narrow their focuses. (Not all needs analyses are built alike, after all, and they start from somewhat different places.) A review of data gathering fundamentals is concise (just over 20 pages) but helpful.
In "Part II, Getting Down to Brass Tacks" Gupta examines and provides very helpful models for conducting four types of needs analyses: Strategic Needs Assessment, Competency-Based Assessment, Job and Task Analysis, and Training Needs Assessment.
The Toolkit in Part III is invaluable--samples of 21 different forms. By itself, this section makes the book worth every penny. The diskette provided, though, provides each of these forms in MSWord--ready to be opened, customized, and used in real applications.
There is great value in this book--enough description of the models that one can begin using them, references to dig deeper into the models if desired, and charts, tables, and job aids that allow anyone to get started quickly on effective needs analysis.

It gets a 3 because it is full of information but no more because it is a dense and dreary text. Reading the postscript a few times helps put it in perspective but that is no substitute for good editing. The "practical guide" subtitle is not appropriate.
