One for Snowy Days.......2000-10-06
I enjoy Minnesota Trivia and am glad I bought it. It's not one of those parody books that poke fun at Minnesotans, but rather a bushel basket full of facts about Minnesota life. The six chapters are Geography, Entertainment, History, Arts and Literature, Sports and Leisure, and Science and Nature. My kids and their kids take it off the shelf to see if I can answer the questions (1,296 of them) about Kettle Falls, Prince, Red River ox carts, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Bronko Nagurski, or Sister Elizabeth Kenny. I'm glad it's on my shelf for snowy days. As a matter of fact, I have two, one for my own notes and one for the kids to use to ask the questions.
Book Description
Bordering its trading partner, Canada, on the north, Minnesota is the 12th-largest state in the USA. It’s no wonder that Minnesota, nicknamed Land of 10,000 Lakes, leads the nation in per capita sales of fishing licenses, with 15,000 streams and over 5,400 fishable lakes. Uncle John is rightly enamored of a state with the world’s only two-story outhouse, and while all states have official flowers and birds, Minnesota has a state beverage (milk) and muffin (blueberry). What other state has spawned such disparate personalities as J. Paul Getty, Bob Dylan, and Jesse Ventura? Its people are just one interesting facet of a state where travelers can find such fascinating curiosities as the SPAM Museum or the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices. Over 300 pages of interesting facts and amusing trivia provide armchair travelers with a glimpse into Minnesota’s people, places, and stunning natural wonders.

It was a given as a gift.......2007-01-04
I gave it to a friend for Christmas because she is from Minnesota. She really enjoyed all the trivia about her home state.
Take the plunge!.......2006-07-28
Awesome!!! Don't visit the loo without it! Bathroom jokes aside, it's overflowing with great facts and humor and the writing is superb (lots of great, undiscovered talent here). If you haven't visited Minnesota yet, you will want to after reading these excellent essays. And if you are a Minnesotan, you will chuckle and nod your head and maybe even say "wow, I didn't know that" about a tidbit or two.
Terrific.......2006-07-28
Uff Da! You betcha this book is fun, interesting and educational!
Worthy of reading beyond the bathroom, Plunges into Minnesota provides an eclectic and entertaining tour of the North Star State. Great for native Minnesotans, transplanted Minnesotans and those who just want to know more about life in the Frozen (and not so frozen)land of 10,000 lakes.
Minnesota Trivia and interesting facts and history.......2006-07-26
Worth every penny!
I really enjoyed reading about important events and people in Minnesota history.
Very well written and not boring facts one after another.
Lots of variety with even a crossword puzzle.
I especially enjoyed the history of the large department store Daytons.

Most informative and factual book ever done on the Vikings........1998-11-20
Wonderfully written book by a writer who really knows how to use his words. Full of fun and lots of facts. Pictures. I thought I knew the Vikings, but now I really know the Vikings. Enjoyable from start to finish. Can't wait to read what John Holler writes next. This is the most factual and informative book ever done on the Vikings. I'm over 50, and I enjoyed it. But I think it could be just as enjoyable for fans as young as 10 or 11.

Twins Trivia.......2001-05-15
I was looking for some history about the Minnesota Twins and this book more then met my needs. The book is unique in that it is in a question/answer format that allows you to guess the answer before you verify it on another page. The book also has some very nice black and white pictures of players as well as pictures of both the Dome and Metropolitan stadium. Real cool shot! This book can also be used as a reference manual because it also includes hitting and pitching statistics for all Twins players. It makes a great gift idea! I would recommend it strongly.

Mary Walton's Deep Understanding.......2006-11-25
Mary Walton has a deep understanding of W. Edwards Deming. This book is a good place to begin. The great men of the Toyoda Family got an understanding of him because they knew how important it was to consistently make incremental improvements in their processes. You can do that also from the shop floor where Deming and the Toyoda men were most comfortable and respected. If you do not want to be there then forget this book. I also recommend you purchase "The Toyota Way" by Jeffrey K. Liker as a companion to "The Deming Management Method".
Outstanding Book.......2006-05-26
"Deming Management Method" is an outstanding book on the quality management methods advocated by one of the best known quality gurus of the last century. Deming became famous for his teaching on quality that transformed Japan from being a country known for producing shoddy products to one that achieved outstanding success in the 1980s and 1990s.
The author, a close associate of Deming over many years, methodically traces the life and teachings of Deming, explaining his famous 14 points and how they can be used to transform a company into an excellent organisation that produces high quality goods and services to meet customer needs, using motivated people.
The book is an important addition to the library of any manager that wishes to see his/her company achieve success. The readers would also benefit greatly by also reading works by quality gurus that include Crosby, Juran, Ishikawa and Deming himself "Out of Crisis".
Great Intro to Deming.......2004-04-14
Mary Walton presents a detailed biography of the Guru of Quality, Edward Deming, based on her lengthy involvement with Deming and his quality training programs. Also, this book features an introduction by Deming.
The majority of this book is dedicated to Walton's interpretation of Deming's 14 points, which encourages organizations to: have a constancy of purpose, adopt a new philosophy, not rely on mass inspections, not to accept contracts based on price alone, constantly improve processes, train and retrain, institute solid leadership, drive out fear in the workplace, breakdown departmental barriers, eliminate slogans, eliminate quotas, remove barriers to pride in workmanship, and take action to transform the organization.
Walton's book does a good job of presenting Deming's theories, which I highly recommend to newcomers to the quality movement. Those experienced in this area and familiar with Deming's 14 points may not benefit as much from this book, but may enjoy a different take on Deming's ideas and somewhat dated examples.
Deming Quality Primer.......2004-02-05
Anyone with an interest in QA, Quality improvement and TQM would have an interest in this book.
It is a great introduction and overview of Demings methods of improvement of organizational quality. It chronicles a history of Deming and his work with the Japanese, basically, he gave them what we finally agreed we needed 40 years later.
Deming left a legacy of quality. Walton, who worked closely with him all of those years reveals that legacy.
A great addition to any business library. This book will make you think differently about everyday management and how you approach business.
It is also a good primer for Demings works, Out of the Crisis and The New Economy.
A Great Book about W E. Deming and his work.......2002-12-24
Mary Waton does the impossible. She tells you about the life of the great Business Guru the late W.Edward Deming. The first part of the book is a short biography of the great man. Then she goes into his 14 points in detail. Another chapter is on Deming's ways to get improvement in any business.
And the following chapter shows the many companies that the Deming method and philosopy help in TQM.
I would recommed these method for any business, small or large.
You can tell the companies that use these methods ....there services and products shine with quality and more
Customer Reviews:
important information in here, anoying way to deliver it.......2006-11-13
Used the book in Organizational Theory. It is an easy ready, lots of pictures and charts, very interesting information contained within, however delivery can be anoying. The executive's voice is always talking to himself and appears to never have done anything right. its audience is for people who know what MBO and TQM stand for, however even if you dont its got great information contained within. 200 or so pages, very easy read .
Very Practical and Revealing on Quality Management.......2001-09-05
A definite read for the person who needs to know the practical issues about Quality Management.
Ideal introduction to Deming's approach to management.......1999-04-11
One of few books about Deming actually endorsed by Deming himself - "It is a pleasure to commend this book to anyone for easy reading of the principles of management..." (Foreword). A step-by-step, practical introduction to the basics of Deming's management philosophy, far easier to read than Deming's own books, but not attempting to reach the depth of the system of profound knowledge outlined in "The New Economics." Of particular use to managers and students in understanding Deming, and to educators in preparing several famous demonstrations, including the Red Bead Experiment and the Funnel Experiment, with ample illustrations. This is not a lecture, but a self-paced "fun" substitute for "the real thing" (Deming's four-day seminars). Highly recommended.
A must read for Deming Devotees.......1997-11-08
This book is unique. It has a format that shows f three levels of the Deming philosophy. It deliniates the viewpoint of the man who led those amazing seminars, It brings the subject to earth with a narrative, and it supplies the wonder of a first-time participant. This is the book I give my students when they ask what Dr Deming was like.
Quick breezy book reviewing the basics of a four day seminar.......1996-10-15
Authors take the reader through a typical four
day Deming seminar. They lead a reader thru a
seminar through the eyes of an executive and the
authors add their comments. Portions of Deming's
seminar are legendary and the authors make you
believe you're there for the marble test. Deming
had approved this book and one of the authors had been
a facilitator for a number of Deming led seminars.
If you want an easy introduction to statistical control,
this is the book for you!

Introduction to Statistical Quality Control
-
SPC Simplified: Practical Steps to Quality
ASIN: 1584882425 |
Book Description
While the common practice of Quality Assurance aims to prevent bad units from being shipped beyond some allowable proportion, statistical process control (SPC) ensures that bad units are not created in the first place. Its philosophy of continuous quality improvement, to a great extent responsible for the success of Japanese manufacturing, is rooted in a paradigm as process-oriented as physics, yet produces a friendly and fulfilling work environment. The first edition of this groundbreaking text showed that the SPC paradigm of W. Edwards Deming was not at all the same as the Quality Control paradigm that has dominated American manufacturing since World War II. Statistical Process Control: The Deming Paradigm and Beyond, Second Edition reveals even more of Deming's philosophy and provides more techniques for use at the managerial level. Explaining that CEOs and service industries need SPC at least as much as production managers, it offers precise methods and guidelines for their use. Using the practical experience of the authors working both in America and Europe, this book shows how SPC can be implemented in a variety of settings, from health care to manufacturing. It also provides you with the necessary technical background through mathematical and statistical appendices. According to the authors, companies with managers who have adopted the philosophy of statistical process control tend to survive. Those with managers who do not are likely to fail. In which group will your company be?
Customer Reviews:
The only complete course of SPC that I know.......2002-06-01
Variation is inherent in many processes common in companies and societies. Edwards Deming, one of the architects of Japan's industrial success, regarded the understanding of variation as one of the most important managerial skills. Unfortunately only few books on management treat that subject at all, and these that do, most frequently give it only a very superficial coverage.
The reviewed book is the only one I know that gives a full explanation of both the practice and the theory of statistical process control (SPC) - the way to understand variation. As a manager and TQM coach I fully recommend the book to managers and management students, as a mathematician I recommend it to students and researchers in statistics.
Readers without mathematical background should not be scared by many mathematical formulas in the book that explain why SPC works. They may very well skip the reading of equations without any loss in understanding of how SPC works and how to use it in practice.
In my opinion the book of James R. Thompson and Jacek Koronacki should be regarded as a must for any business school library and the bookshelf of any manager.

Product Description
Much of what is measured in business, especially in safety, is governed by conventional wisdom. In many cases, there are absolutely no data to support the conventional wisdom, and often the evidence that does exist indicates that the conventional wisdom is wrong. This book improves on the conventional wisdom and help readers avoid misdirected decisions driven by flawed measures. The purpose of our book is to help others make better decisions because they have good measures based on sound theory of effective measurement. Rather than trying to lay out a set of procedures or practices that can used to improve safety, the authors hope to provide the theoretical knowledge that will enable the reader to understand and address the underlying causes of management-system problems.
