Book Description
A True Story of the Berlin Airlift and the Candy that Dropped from the Sky.
Life was grim in 1948 West Berlin, Germany. Josef Stalin blockaded all ground routes coming in and out of Berlin to cut off West Berliners from all food and essential supplies. Without outside help, over 2.2 million people would die.
Thus began the Berlin Airlift, a humanitarian rescue mission that utilized British and American airplanes and pilots to fly in needed supplies. As one of the American pilots participating in the Airlift mission, Lt. Gail S. Halvorsen helped to provide not only nourishment to the children but also gave them a reason to hope for a better world. From one thoughtful, generous act came a lifelong relationship between Lt. Gail and the children of Berlin.
This is the true story of a seven-year-old girl named Mercedes who lived in West Berlin during the Airlift and of the American who came to be known as the Chocolate Pilot.
Artist Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen's evocative paintings illuminate Margot Theis Raven's powerful story of hope, friendship and remembrance.

Great Addition to your Library.......2007-09-09
We loved this book. We read it last year while studying about Germany. We loved it so much we bought it ourselves. Beautiful true story about how even in the hardships of war, blessing happen. The kids and I even cried a little as we read this one. Just a great read with great illustrations as well.
A Gem of a Book!.......2007-06-08
Some years ago, I "dragged" my wife and son to meet the Candy Bomber when he came through town. He gave a really nice speech in which he told the story of Mercedes. Amazingly, I had finally found a pilot who hit a sweet note with them. A year or two later, they even went to meet him again, and my son caught candy he dropped at the airport. Well, when the book came out, my wife latched onto it in an instant. She was so taken with the book and the retelling of the story of Mercedes, that she has incorporated it into her class room. Super nice man and touching story. The author did a splendid job that does both justice. You'll enjoy this one!
Beautiful and moving.......2007-05-27
A lovely story of a little-known episode in post-World War II Europe, the Berlin Airlift, and the American pilot who knew that for children, chocolates and sweets were almost more important than the basic supplies the Airlift was providing the citizens of West Berlin, so he sent those along with the rest of his cargo, and in doing so, gave them hope.
Margot Theis Raven movingly depicts an important time in history and the gallantry and heart of the man who `rained down sweets' on a city that needed it. A wonderful read with fascinating historical information that kids and adults will enjoy.
Bravo, Ms. Raven!
Kind, heroic American soldier grants German child's wish.......2003-04-08
This true story of hope, kindness and heroism is a reminder that there are American soldiers who have provided a variety of rescues for people in other countries, a reminder that every child is important, a reminder that one caring person can change the world. There's even a subtle message of the power of prayer. The illustrations are as beautiful, sweet, and historically accurate as the story itself. The heart-warming text gives children a true living American hero to emulate in the Chocolate Pilot and a child to relate to in Mercedes. Grown-ups love this book as much as children do.
The Impact of Adults in the Life of a Child........2003-01-15
"Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot: A True Story of the Berlin "Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot": This is a true Story of the Berlin Airlift and the Candy That Dropped from the Sky by Margot Theis Raven, Gijsbert Van Frankenhuyzen" demonstrates the true meaning of the human sprit and the impact of that sprit upon generation after generation. While I was reading this story I was reminded of a saying which emphasizes how truly important our roles, as adults, are in the lives of children, ...but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child." This true story is truly remarkable and a must to share with adults and children.

Griggsby Wright, MD says:
This book has fantastic illustrations relating to anatomical structures, creating a 3-dementional appreciation for technical approaches and interventions. However, the genre of this book is limitless by actually getting down to the molecular aspects of theory and practice.
This book boasts an extensive compilation frameworked within a superior format.

An unusual, important analysis.......2004-05-03
The collaborative effort of Mark Thornton and Robert Ekelund Jr., Tariffs, Blockades, and Inflation blends contemporary economic analysis and modern market theory with a history of the Civil War era to provide a comprehensive approach to Civil War history. From analysis of why and how the war began as it did to chapters contrasting the different underlying economic concerns of North and South before, during and after conflict, this provides an unusual, important analysis.
The actually not dismal science.......2004-02-17
I bought this book with the intention that it should complement and supplement previously read works on the "Civil War", eg.: Tom DiLorenzo's Lincoln, Jeffrey Hummel's Emancipation and Enslavement, and Charles Adams' When in the Course. It didn't disappoint. Although it is strictly an economic look at the war, it is a Human Action type (self-interest) economics. Stats and graphs add to the text, they don't overwhelm it.
The highlights---Slavery a factor, yes, but as an economic issue, much more than a moral issue. Tariffs a factor, yes, but the uncertainty about future rates, with the election of Republican Lincoln, more than the immediate antebellum rates. The Anaconda Plan worked, yes, but with a great assist from the South with its impressments, embargo, and "luxury" taxes, the Rhett Butler effect. The relationship between the financing of the war (a lot of inflation, yes) and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. When one ponders today's current account deficit, the Civil War's economics do not represent the distant past.
All in all, a book of around 160 pages including introduction, index and bibliography full of interesting interpretations of things which I thought I knew so well, yet didn't.

Geoffrey Ellis offers an up-to-date synthesis of recent research into the aims and effects of Napoleonic rule in France and in conquered Europe. Thoroughly revised, this second edition provides much more extensive coverage of Napoleon's treatment of the annexed lands and subject states of the "Grand Empire", as well as of military conscription and desertion, and the role of the Gendarmerie in the war against brigands and military defaulters. The legacy of Napoleonic rule is discussed in greater depth, and the book also features a more comprehensive bibliography.

Book Description
This new collection of up-to-date essays by well-known scholars covers the most significant naval blockades of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Napoleon's Continental Blockade of England and the American Civil War, as well as blockades in more recent conflicts such as World War II, the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Persian Gulf interdiction program, and the Chinese "missile" blockade of Taiwan in 1996.
Each chapter addresses the causes of the blockade in question, its long and short-term repercussions, and the course of the blockade itself and takes advantage of new research and methodologies to provide the most complete information to both the specialist and non-specialist reader. This volume presents fresh insights into issues such as what a naval blockade is, why countries might chose them, which navies can and cannot make use of them, what responses lead to satisfactory or unsatisfactory conclusions, and how far-reaching their consequences tend to be.
This book will be of great interest to all students and scholars of strategic studies, military history and maritime studies.

Book Description
During World War I Britain and Germany tried to starve each other into submission by the use of naval blockades that caused terrible deprivation to civilian populations. This graphic new volume describes the strategy and tactics of the blockades and their importance in deciding the outcome of the war. The many elements covered include the torpedoing of the Lusitania, German plots detected by British intelligence, Q-ships, armed freighters, and air ships. The author contends that the entry of the United States into the war and the introduction of convoys were the ultimate weapons in holding the U-boat threat at bay. Based on years of research, this book will appeal to everyone with an interest in World War I and the strategic use of blockades. 224 pages. 142 photos.14 line drawings. Notes. Index. Splintering the Wooden Wall: The British Blockade of the United States, 1812-1815
Wade G. Dudley
Manufacturer: US Naval Institute Press
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: 155750167X |
Book Description
Most naval historians take their cue from the work of Alfred Thayer Mahan published a century ago and view the blockade of the United States during the War of 1812 as a highly effective wooden wall. But Wade Dudley challenges that prevailing interpretation and in the pages of this new study provides a bold new assessment. Rather than an impermeable wooden wall, he says the Royal Navy's blockade resembled a light picket fence that was easily splintered by aggressive American public and private navies preying on British merchantmen. The first book-length treatment of the 1812 blockade since Mahan's, his well-reasoned analysis is certain to influence future thinking about the most used tool in a sailing Navy's arsenal.
The work presents a useful overview of the history, theory, and practice of blockades during the age of fighting sail along with an evaluation of the naval capabilities of the belligerents, a comparison of the blockade of the United States to British blockades of Revolutionary and Napoleonic France, and a discussion of the importance of geography in the theater of conflict. Readers will be fascinated by the story that emerges of the modern world's first super power at war with a developing nation and of a conflict between civilized states that threatened to devolve into little more than a campaign of terror.
Customer Reviews:
A highly important study of the naval War of 1812.......2003-03-23
Wade G. Dudleyýs ýSplintering the Wooden Wallý may be the most perceptive book about the naval War of 1812 I have yet read, and it offers substantial insights about the Royal Navyýs role in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars as well. This is not a vivid history of dramatic single-ship actions, nor does it study of great fleet actions. Its subtitle ý ýThe British Blockade of the United States, 1812-1815ý ý defines its central focus, but as background to this subject Dudley provides a study of the evolution of blockades as practiced by the Royal Navy, from the early, tentative efforts in the English Civil War and the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the 17th Century through the Seven Years War in the mid-18th Century (during which Admiral Sir Edward Hawke carried out the first genuinely extended blockade, off Brest, for six months in 1759) to the vast complex operations off the French coast from 1793 to 1815. Dudley demonstrates that the Royal Navyýs ability to conduct long-term blockades was end product of numerous technical and logistical developments, including the coppering of shipsý hulls (allowing vessels to remain at sea for protracted periods), the discovery of how to prevent scurvy (likewise permitting lengthy deployments), and procedures for supply replenishment while remaining on station.
The traditional view, championed by Alfred Hart Mahan, has been that the British blockade of the American coast during the War of 1812, drawing from the Royal Navyýs experience against France, proved to be highly effective in shutting down American naval and mercantile activities. Not so, Dudley contends. His detailed research into records on both sides of the Atlantic results in a persuasive case that the blockade of the American coast was badly flawed. From the very beginning, the Admiralty allocated entirely inadequate resources for the task, too few ships and too few men. And, as Dudley convincingly argues, even those inadequate resources were frequently poorly employed to further the aims of an effective blockade. American commercial shipping continued for much of the war at considerable strength, privateers readily slipped out of American ports to range the oceans to prey upon enemy merchantmen, and even US Navy warships were frequently able to evade the blockade to add their own threat against British interests. The wooden wall supposed to hem in American vessels, as Dudley states, did not collapse, but it was severely splintered.
Dudleyýs approach to his subject is decidedly scholarly, and he relies upon numerous tables of statistical data rather than colorful anecdotes to make his case, but in the end there seems little room to question his conclusions. At times his prose is perhaps a bit overly geared towards an academic audience rather than the general reader: ý[American] naval officers knew the local sea-land interface intimately and avoided unfamiliar interfaces when at sea.ý Sea-land interface? Oh, the impervious horrors of a leeward sea-land interface! And, unfortunately for such a book, the index and table of contents prove to be inadequate for easy reference. Still, such quibbles do not substantially diminish the genuine value of Dudleyýs book, not only for understanding the Royal Navyýs operations during the War of 1812 but also for comprehending the theory and limitation of blockade strategy as practiced in the Age of Fighting Sail.
