This is a poor effort that should be ignored by beginners and intermediate players alike. It covers some of the basic mating patterns--Legal's pseudo-sacrifice, back-rank mates, the smothered mate--but it's far from comprehensive. It also confuses its audience, mixing discussion of basic mates with more complex versions of them. And it's filled with excess verbiage.
What you really need if you're an absolute beginner, knowing little more than how the pieces move, is one clear, simple example after another. Gillam's Basic Checkmates (as well as his Basic Tactics) is the place to start. Once you can spot one- and two-move mates automatically, graduate to Renaud and Kahn's The Art of Checkmate, the definitive treatment of basic mating patterns, and a very lucid book that rewards frequent review. Then move on to Fred Reinfeld's 1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate, and start solving the problems. No need to work on checkmating patternses as diligently as other more general tactical exercises that have a wider practical application, but it's important to develop the habit of always looking for them in your games. The basic patterns are even reviewed in Vukovic's classic, The Art of Attack in Chess.
One final note: there are a finite number of basic mating patterns and they never change, so newer (Robertie) isn't necessarily better. Clear illustrations are what matters. The English translation of Renaud and Kahn's book was first published in 1953 and I'm sure people will still have high praise for it 50 years from now.

1 out of 5 stars Robertie should retitle the book, "Master Check Strategy".......2003-06-22

'Master Checkmate Strategy' is a good read for players 12 years or younger. It has some valuable strategy in it for the player that is just starting out in the game, however the average player will be dissapointed by it's lack of substance, and the experienced player will be frustrated and dismayed by the obvious errors in the book. Robertie has now formed a trend of placing erroneous problems in his books, as has been seen in more than one of his publications. I would not reccomend this book to any aspiring player above the junior scholastic level. I bought the book this morning and intend to return it on account of it's errors which gave me a day's worth of frustration.

Notably, his second checkmate problem example on page 18 of the book demonstrates his misconception of endgame strategy problems where he outlines what he believes is a sound and unavoidable checkmate, provided (as he does mention in his book), that the opposing player is foolish enough to take his bishop sacrifice. Well i easily found a line where after the sacrifice was taken checkmate was STILL avoided, and not only that, but i put the scenario to some of the top rated software on the market and Robertie's gamble wound up turning the mate-er into the mate-ee. To be fair and accurate I also ran an infinite timed analysis to determine the best line... the game plays out to a draw, as Robertie's mislead mate overextends his peices, and the two pawn advantage he gains is soon lost as Fritz tried it's best to defend his position.

I'm not out to smear the book but I believe that people should have a right to know what they are getting into.

2 out of 5 stars A book with flaws, but not worthless........2002-07-25

While I see where the previous reviewer is coming from, I don't think this book is all that bad. I consider myself an intermediate player (I'm not ranked, but if I had to guess, I'd say I'd be about 1300), but my end-game was my biggest weakness. I found myself frequently missing checkmating combinations, and was frequently unable to capitalize on early material advantages against players of roughly the same skill level. I bought this book for one reason: to improve my end-game. There is no question that that mission has been accomplished, due at least in part to this book. While the author does make some rather dubious remarks (presumably solely to hype the book), if you approach the book from the standpoint of using it to help recognize potential checkmates within the context of normal play, I found it to be somewhat useful. Many of the examples are not practical (I was disappointed that the scholar's mate was even mentioned, let alone covered as a valid opening), but the concepts behind them are generally sound (with a few notable exceptions). Also, the coverage of some of the basic mating patterns was useful and relatively concise.
While the book is no substitute for a solid understanding of chess fundamentals, there are useful lessons to be learned. Unfortunately, there are several lessons in this book that advocate plays and gambits that time has shown to be weak. If you have a good fundamental understanding of basic chess tactics and strategies, and are careful to weed out the bad advice from the good, this book CAN improve your game. Just be careful, focus on the concepts behind the lessons and examples, and don't take too much of what Mr. Robertie says to heart.

2 out of 5 stars Superficial look at mating strategies........1997-12-06

Before buying this book, think about your chess goals. If chess is a pleasant diversion, and not a serious pursuit, this book may be for you. But if you take the game seriously and aim to develop a fundamentally sound game that will take you to higher levels, this book is a step backward, not forward. Look at Robertie's first few paragraphs: "There are two ways to win a chess game. One way is solid, steady and unspectacular. You gradually outplay your opponent, piling small advantage on top of small advantage. You win a little material along the way, and finally score a win in the endgame. The spectators greet your achievement with polite but modest applause. The second way is harder but much more satisfying..." He then goes on to extoll the virtues of the quick knockout, the brilliant mating attack, greeted by "the spectators scream themselves hoarse as they carry you from the room on their shoulders." Hmmm, well, I don't know of any chess player who wouldn't want to score a quick knockout with a brilliant mating attack. I don't know any runners who wouldn't like to win an Olympic gold medal medal either. But guess what? If you want it, you have to work for it. Robertie's dismissal of the fundamentals of chess, of the the hard work and study that goes into the building up of a sound position, is an appalling disservice to the student of chess who might buy this book. In other words, Robertie has it backwards. It is precisely the foundation of solid fundamental chess which provides the proper platform from which to launch those brilliant finishes. Robertie's book is nothing but a quick and superficial rehash of some nifty tricks that win games against the novice and the fellow unsound player. For those looking for such tricks, this isn't even a good source. Pandolfini's opening traps and zaps books, and Hodgson's quick chess knockouts books present a much greater repertoire, more systematically presented, with a better grounding in the context of a real game. Silman, and about 50 other authors, have written better books about how to finish a game. This book will bring you many wins agains your non-chess playing friends, but if you attempt to play tournament chess, this book will keep you in the Class D ranks.

An excellent book that gives the reader a fantastic insight into what makes Lou tick and how to succeed in both sport and life. Filled with humour it is easy to reaad and very informative.

5 out of 5 stars Learn important people skills and leadership lessons while you have fun reading..........2006-06-01

I happened to notice this book one day when I took my daughter to the library. A friend of mine is a personal acquaintance of Lou's so I decided to see what 'Ol Lou is all about for myself.

This is a book of (mostly humorous) stories that makes it a fun, easy read. At the same time, each story has powerful success principles and truths embedded within.

If you want to see powerful leadership in action, this is a great book.

If you want to get more from your interactions and relationships with people in every area of your life, this is a great book.

If you find yourself doubting your abilities and potential, this is a great book.

If you want to be able to learn from someone who started out as a nobody with nothing and ended up as somebody who had something, this is a great book.

If you weren't fortunate enough to have a parent or adult-figure who taught you how to win at the game of life, then I heartily recommend this book to help fill in that void.

If you don't see yourself in the preceding statements, or, if you have read all the success books and you are looking for something brand-new that you have never heard of before, then this probably isn't the book for you.

    4 out of 5 stars Classic Lou.......2005-09-26

If you are looking for pure Lou Holtz motivation, you will not be disappointed. There are no "silver bullets" here, but the book will do a good job of reinforcing some great principles for creating a successful team or organization.

    3 out of 5 stars NOPE!.......2004-05-21

When you read the reviews here, you'd think this guy could walk on water, but this book is long on motivation and short on application. Now, if you want something that will blow the concepts and information in this book right out of the water and, at the same time, get rid of the "Big Daddy" syndrome which this book fosters too, read SUCCESS CYBERNETICS by Uell S. Andersen - a book that's never been out of print since it first appeared in 1966! SUCCESS CYBERNETICS is available from amazon.com too, go see the reviews and get it. Forget the "Raw Raw Raw, Sis Boom Bah" approach that this one contains.

5 out of 5 stars Life & Leadership Tips from a Master Motivator.......2003-07-01

Lou Holtz, currently the head football coach at the University of South Carolina, has written one of the best, and most enjoyable leadership books I have ever read. His game plan for success was largely told through his gridiron experiences, but this plan is about much more than just football-it is a proven, common-sense guide for succeeding in the game of life.

What makes Holtz's life and leadership insights so compelling and believable are his dynamic life experiences and his incredible list of accomplishments: parents were divorced; fiance' broke off their engagement, but they later married and remain so after 40 years; only coach to lead 4 different programs to top-20 finishes and 6 different programs to bowl games (William and Mary, N.C. State, Arkansas, Minnesota, Notre Dame, South Carolina); 23 of 32 college teams he coached have received bowl bids, with 18 top-25 finishes, 8 top-10 finishes, and one undefeated national championship; 3rd winningest active coach and 7th place all-time with 243 victories; wife's heroic battle with throat cancer; fired or let go as assistant coach more than once; polled as the best motivational speaker in the country two years in a row, and his motivational video "Do Right!" is the all-time best-seller; guest speaker at most Fortune 500 companies; and was invited to the Oval Office by four different presidents.

Holtz's game plan consists of ten steps. Each step is explored in detail in its own chapter. The colorful, real-world stories and humorous anecdotes Holtz used to present the steps' lessons perfectly complemented his conversational writing style. The final chapter is considered the "end-zone" of success-where you can be if you have the courage, desire, and character to apply the lessons described within the plan's steps.

The book is jammed full of common-sense, spiritual, philosophical, and motivational life and leadership perspectives. The most memorable passages for me as a father, leader, and follower were Holtz's thoughts about discipline:

"For me, a disciplinarian is someone who requires that people understand the consequences of their decisions. You use discipline to reinforce choices. Our athletes and my children knew that if they chose to misbehave, they were also choosing to pay the consequences...In each case, I never punished anyone; the offenders chose the punishment themselves by their actions."

He illustrated his commitment to being a disciplinarian by describing the circumstances that led to him suspending his top three Arkansas players before the 1977 Orange Bowl (against Oklahoma), and to suspending two of his best players before his top-ranked Notre Dame team played the second-ranked University of Southern California in 1988:

"[They] recklessly violated our Do Right rule, which governs personal conduct...These were not bad guys; they simply made a bad decision...I didn't want the keys to our offense to miss our biggest game of the year, but when they decided to break our rules, they also decided to miss the game. Now I had to support that choice."

Holtz is a master motivator and a proven true winner in football and life. My highest recommendation for this book is best captured by Holtz himself when he wrote, "As you know, the only things that will change you from where you are today to where you want to be five years from now are the books you read and the people you meet." I hope I someday get a chance to meet Lou Holtz and thank him for his outstanding book on life and leadership.

A master motivator who guided Notre Dame to the 1988 national college football championship, Lou Holtz knows how to win big on and off the gridiron. For business leaders, for recent college graduates struggling on their first job, or for just about anyone who wants to get ahead, Holtz devises a game plan for success: dream, believe, and achieve. "Write down everything you hope to achieve in life," Holtz writes. "Then make sure you do something every day to realize one of your dreams. You are going to encounter adversity but you will also ... take big, satisfying bites out of life."

Holtz believes that people are capable of achieving just about anything if they learn to tap into the unrelenting powers inside themselves. He illustrates his points by drawing from moments in his rags-to-riches career as one of America's best college football coaches. Holtz's formula is simple: He calls it "WIN" or "What's Important Now." Holtz writes that if he can do it, anyone can. Despite being raised poor in a beat Ohio river town, later devastated by his parents' divorce, Holtz ended up with the best college football job in the country. Clearly, Holtz can get into the end zone. Follow his advice, and maybe you will, too. --Dan Ring

5 out of 5 stars Top notch life and success manual.......2004-03-04

Wonderful, realistic lessons about life and winning. Several memorable and hilarious jokes, a lot of valuable advice. Two jokes come immediately to mind--the one about Holtz's non-request upon leaving Notre Dame, and the one about the fire truck with bad brakes. There are many others. This book really speaks to people where they are, and because it is modern, is probably more valuable than some of the classics like Think and Grow Rich, etc. Besides, coaches just have a special way of telling it like it is. A winner.

Lou Holtz has written a motivational book based on his coaching experiences. He has taken the lessons he has learned coaching athletes and applied them to everyday living. Coach Holtz will show you how to apply his ten rules for living to your life. He will show you how to become a winner and lead a successful life. I found Winning Every Day to be an interesting book. I believe I can apply his rules to my own life to be a better person. The examples he uses to make a point are interesting. Some examples are funny, some are sad. This is a good read.

    Book Description

Shannon Miller, the most decorated gymnast in American history, has won sixteen medals and is one of the sports world's most positive role models.  Yet none of it would have happened if a little girl from Oklahoma hadn't dared to dream .  .  .  and followed up on that dream with hard work, commitment, and a firm belief in herself.

"I've learned to be disciplined and organized in order to balance gymnastics, college, and a social life," says Shannon.  But how does she do it?  And is that kind of focus within your reach?  Yes!  With friendly, upbeat advice, Shannon shares how she succeeds in being a winner both inside and outside the gym.  Inspiring sections in Winning Every Day include:

    Getting motivated
    Setting goals
    Eating healthy (with recipes!)
    Handling stress
    Finding spiritual fulfillment
    Achieving your dreams

and much more, including personal gymnastics anecdotes, diary excerpts, and full-color photos from Shannon's private collection.  Winning Every Day - Shannon Miller's down-to-earth approach to getting the most out of life - will make you a winner too!

    5 out of 5 stars Very Intresting.......2004-05-12

I had heard about this book for a long time, but I hadn't bothered to read it because I didn't want to read some boring book about how to improve your life.

But recently I decided to give it a go and I borrowed it from our library. I was pleasantly surprised!

This book is full with stories about Shannon, and it gives you some insight into her life, career, and faith. It was nice to finally read some things written by Shannon, not about her.

If you want to read about Shannon's life in her own words, read this book. You won't be disappointed!

And no, Shannon does not tell you how to improve your life, she only gives suggestions and explains how different things worked for her, and could work for you.

NOTE: This book is not a biography. It's only a bunch of stories strung together, but any die-hard gymnastic fan should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars This book is so worth reading!!!!!!!.......2003-05-04

This book was so good!! it had atleast one picture on each page. Shannon began each chapter with a diary entry. She explained her gymnastics life and her non-gymnastics life. It if more like a fun biography!

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book!.......2003-02-12

"Winning Every Day" is a wonderful, well-written book. This book combines an autobiography of Shannon Miller with lessons and motivators that will help you do better in gymnastics and will make your life happier and healthier. From reading this book, you really feel like you know Shannon Miller. It's also filled with tons of amazing pictures of Shannon, family members, gymnasts, and much more. Some things this book covers include eating healthy-this chapter had wonderful recipies that Shannon enjoys herself, fear and pain, stress and what to do about it, acheiving dreams in and out of gymnastics, setting goals, competition, faith, and much more. Shannon also shares many secrets that explain how she got to the top in gymnastics and how she was able to stay successful in the sport for so long. A wonderful book for all gymnasts, this book will motivate you and help you become a better gymnast.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Inspirational.......2002-12-21

I enjoyed this book and it covered a lot of fabulous topics about gymnastics, school and social life, as well as the sacrifices and efforts she made to become an Olympian. My only criticism was that b/c Shannon comes across as a private person (I don't blame her) the parts about her personal life seemed brief. What I really admire about this young woman is her strength and attitude. I disagree with the rating that said Shannon portrayed herself as 'too perfect'. Shannon is a wonderful gymnast, a fabulous student, a spiritually-connected woman who is close with her family and friends, and demonstrates huge self-discipline to maintain being the best she can be. As far as I'm concerned, she is pretty darned close to perfect. Actually, I was impressed that Shannon acknowledged the intense effort and commitment to get her to where she is. She didn't make it all out to be peaches and cream, yet she has such a positive attitude. She is definitely the most decorated gymnast! I would especially recommend this to younger gymnasts - it's easy to read and it gets to the point!

    5 out of 5 stars Inspirational!.......2002-09-16

This is a wonderful book with inspirational words for anyone striving towards greatness in any sport. Her determination and dedication that brought her success shines through every page.

I am presently rewiting corporate policy for a Information Technology (IT) firm and find this guide an excellent tool in learning (designing) the "sales" process. It is very well written and I especially appreciate the fact that I don't have to wade through reams of narrative to get at the "meat". The tables are priceless. I'm sending copies to our VP of Sales and COO as part of our restructuring. You can't do any better than this for executive "brevity".
