Beautiful, sophisticated lace designs.......2007-09-26
This book includes lace designs in such a range of difficulties and styles that everyone is sure to find something that catches their fancy. While I have not yet knit any of the patterns, they appear to be well-written and easy to follow. Can't wait to cast on from this book.
Lace Style.......2007-09-21
There are some absoutely beautiful patterns in this book, there is one in particular that I am looking forward to making.
Sizing variations noticeably change pattern.......2007-09-04
Very nice book, most of the designs are lovely. However, I'm the type of knitter who wants a chart for every lace pattern, no matter how simple. Not every pattern has a chart.
I'm currently working on the Tailored Scallops jacket on the cover, and the pattern implementation of the size I chose makes the jacket look much different than what is photographed. Because the feather & fan stitch is a fairly big pattern, this is somewhat reasonable, but I'm going to frog what I have and rework the pattern myself. This is disappointing to me, since my size is the medium one (I'm a 10/12), and you'd think the pattern likely to be used most would be written to show off the stitches. As it is, the dense part of the pattern dominates the lacy part. Fixing it will require more complicated instructions, not of the type where you can change the number of stitches and repeats with parentheses (e.g., repeat 2(2,3,3,4) times). Really putting the extra effort into patterning for each size would make this a 5-star book.
Lace Style...my favorite.......2007-08-12
I love this book....want to knit everything in it! The patterns are clear, and include something for everyone.
Fun patterns!.......2007-07-09
I own this book and think it was worth every penny I spent on it! The patterns, with the exception of the knitted dress, were very nice and I could see myself knitting them.

encuadernación, calidad de papel y fotos excelente. A pesar de tener 100 diseños, no es el mejor, en todo caso.
Not worth the money.......2005-08-17
A New Twist on Tatting was mostly disappointing. None of the designs is particularly difficult from the perspective of technique, but for those of us with very little free time on our hands, the amount of time and patience that would be required to produce some of them is just plain too much, especially for the uses that the author suggests.
I've often thought that many of the needle arts, particularly the lace making types, have gone out of fashion simply because we have so little use for them any more. Furthermore, not many people appreciate the sophistication of technique and time that is required to produce them. If anything Ms Austin's book only confirms that suspicion. Most of the uses to which she put her designs seem forced, almost desperate. Why would anyone spend hours tatting something for a teddy bear? Most of the illustrations have a tired look about them, but perhaps this is the outcome of the nostalgia motif of the book itself. The antique décor and the keepsakes from bygone days are pretty much where most of the patterns belong. Certainly the cotton bed spread type threads used to create some of them didn't help.
If you're looking to learn tatting, I'd try another book on the subject. Or better still find someone to actually show you how. It's a little difficult to catch on to at first, because the natural tendency is to pull the wrong thread tight and end up making knots rather than slip stitches. If you've already tried unsuccessfully to tat with a shuttle, look at a book or two on needle tatting. You may find this easier to do. After learning it this way, you may find that shuttle tatting is easier to do.
If you're looking for an imaginative way to use what you've already learned, I'd check out Tatting Collage, by Lindsay Rogers. She shares splendid ideas that even the most beginning of tatters can do, and she also shows where the needle arts are really headed these days. When you read a book like hers, you see that it isn't the art itself that's "tired" or "useles" but the way we use them. Tatting Patterns by Lyn Morton also provides some novel uses for tatted motifs and shows what a little color does for your designs as well. Also a nice book of motifs and projects, and one of my favorites, is Blomqvist and Persson's Tatting Patterns and Designs. For those of you who want to do snowflakes for the holidays check out Tatting with Anne Orr. These are definitely not "tired" works of the tatting art.
This one just isn't worth it.
Pretty Pictures, Recycled Patterns.......2004-11-02
There are indeed very lovely pictures of tatting in this book, but almost ALL the patterns are in the Julia Sanders book that is only $3.95. For patterns, save your money and get Tatting Patterns by Julia E. Sanders.
Great Book.......2004-02-13
This is a wonderful book for inspiration! I've tried several of the patterns (there's 50) and thoroughly enjoyed each project.
Looks nice, but not worth the price.......2001-06-03
If you want a book filled with colorful pictures of tatting, you'll find them here. But, if you want patterns to tat all those pretty projects be ready for a surprise, because you won't find most of them. The first half of the book is filled with pictures of tatted projects, but no patterns to accompany them. The "New Twist" must be the use of obscure threads for most of the patterns given. Not only are these threads *not* readily available to tatters, there is no reference for conversion to the cotton or silk threads tatters usually use. Most of the patterns included are not especially unique, not enough to justify the relatively high cost of the book. Save your money, don't buy this one.
Book Description
Detailed instructions for making 15 tatting projects, including jewelry and items for the home, and full descriptions of special techniques are given in full.

Contemporary Tatting.......2007-10-02
I have only had a chance to look through the book, but it looks like it has a lot of the newer tatting that I am looking for.

A must have!.......2006-08-24
What a great tatting book! The beginning has very good instructions for several techniques and then there are 15 lovely patterns demonstrating them. Lots of nice, large, color photos and diagrams with clear written and charted directions.
Excellent book.......2006-08-01
This book is a great one for a tatter in any level. What I like the most about the book is that you can find some techniques that are not very commonly use in Tatting and at least a pattern to practice that technique. Also some patterns "play" with beads, something that makes tatting more beautiful!
Great Tatting Book.......2006-07-13
This is a wonderful book. It is very inspiring. You find it hard to decide what to tat first. This is one of the best tatting books I have seen in awhile. Well worth purchasing.
Book Description
Detailed illustrations, photographs, of over 300 exquisite lace samples and designs created over past 500 years. Delicate masterpieces depict human and mythical figures, filigree designs of hearts and flowers, beautiful floral and foliate motifs, more. Royalty-free designs from elegant borders, edgings, collars, doilies, much else.

Falls short of expectations.......2006-05-25
While this book shows incredible detail in the images of lacework, it does not provide a single word on the sources or dates of the lace pieces. This book will provide inspiration for lacemakers or designers (not patterns!) Historical costumers or reproduction lacemakers who require documentation for their work will wish to pass by this resource.
At last a book for skilled lacemakers.......2000-06-10
I know and appreciate very much Ms. Grafton's books. Being a lacemaker, a crocheter and an embroiderer, I really love the variety of laces presented in this book. Antique prints, drawings and photographs bring us many examples of historical laces. Needlelace plus Bruges, Venetian, Milanese, Teneriffe, Battenberg laces and Square-net embroidery are all presented in this book. Although very appealing to the eye, it could disappoint the novice lacemaker, because there are no instructions, prickings or diagrams; only a wealth of exquisitely detailed laces from many ages and countries. Anyway, it's a good source for advanced lacemakers (embroiderers, crocheters...): they can draw inspiration from those patterns to develop their own designs and prickings.

Customer Reviews:
I loved this one.......2007-01-17
This has several interesting doilies, and a fair collection of nice medallions. There are also several crowns and some edgings. I found many of the doilies more interesting than many patterns but they still show off the work nicely. I really enjoyed this book.
I love this book!.......2005-10-24
I find this tattingbook very interesting. The book is originally from 1967 and it has many nice patterns, specially I like the doilies. It has patterns for beginners and for more advanced tatters. The pictures is to great help for me since I havn't tatted for very long time, to be excact only for 2 months, and I learned to tat from a website. Still I found the patterns easy to follow except for one and thats "Water Lily". But I will not give up and I'm sure that one sunny day I will manage to do that lovely doily. It's the centre that gives me problems, the rest seem to be very easy. I even went to library to have a look at the book in its origin language, swedish, but it's still too difficult for me,yet..
This book is really a "must" for serious tatters!!
A lovely book but not for the beginner.......2005-05-15
This beautiful book was first published in the 60s, went out of print before I could get my own copy in the mid 70s, and then to my delight Dover reprinted it. The original was in Swedish but the translation to English is excellent and there are no difficulties in understanding the requirements of each pattern.
It contains a good introduction to the history of tatting which culminates in pictures of some of the most exquisite tatted lace handkerchiefs I have ever seen.
I do not consider this to be a book for the complete beginner. Many of the patterns are more complex than someone who has never tatted before would be able to manage. The instructions provided on how to tat are extremely brief and you're really better off with a good techniques book such as Rebecca Jones's Complete Book of Tatting if you've never tatted before.
I would still say buy this and keep it for later on though because it's a super book. Over the years I have made most of the patterns in it, apart from the Ace of Hearts doily the instructions are accurate and the patterns look as illustrated in the photographs when made up.
The collection of patterns is quite delightful. We start off with a collection of edgings including some two shuttle work which at the time this book was published was not usually found in any tatting publication. Next the collection of motifs includes some lovely stars and flowers with which to create a mobile. However the patterns could be used for almost any purpose and you don't have to use them for mobiles. There is a collection of simpler designs which include my all time favourite pattern, the large cross pattern, which I have made on many occasions as gifts. Finally there is a wonderful collection of intermediate to advanced doily designs and three tatted bridal crowns finish the book off.
The patterns are written in notational format with absolutely no diagrams at all but the photographs are clear enough that you won't need diagrams. Most patterns are accurate apart from the Ace of Hearts Doily and even it can be made following careful study of the photograph. I recommend this book unreservedly.
Not much to go on.......2003-06-20
The instructions include the basic knot, how to join rings, how to join threads. That's it. Nothing on making chains, hints on when to reverse work, how to use two shuttles, what is "one shuttle, second thread" etc. You do need these techniques to make most of the patterns though. So I would say the book is incomplete. To top it off, the patterns are not all that inspiring.
Some not-so-useful, but unique, patterns.......2001-12-20
This book has several pages of "stars" or medallions to make hanging mobiles, crowns and candlestick frills-- something I've never seen anywhere else. But where would I use these patterns? The doily and edging patterns are limited, although very well illustrated in black and white photographs. If you're an experienced tatter looking for some different doily or edging patterns, this probably won't fulfill your needs. But this book would work well for a beginner. And if you suddenly need a tatted crown, here you go!

senior crochet .......2007-06-22
i have owned this book for many years and have wanted to do the peacock on the cover. to my surprise there are no directions for it inside except the chart but with skill and patience it can be done. reason i say this is i am 3/4 the way done. counted carefully and follow the chart strictly. i am using #10 thread in white with a steel #7 hook. any thicker thread would be too heavy to hang. get 4 large[not regular size] balls.i'm on my third ball and 3/4th the way done. here is a clue. to start the pattern, chain 438 [ this includes the chain 5 for ending turn], turn, dc in 7th chain from hook, skip 2 chain, dc in next chain. you are forming little squares. you have to end up with 144 squares across. chain 5 at all endings then turn for next row. for more then one solid square it will be- for 2 squares = 7 dc, 3 squares it will be 10 dc, 4 squares= 13 dc. so it would be smart to make a chart as follows 1 = 4dc, 2 = 7dc, 3 = 10dc, 4 = 13dc, 5 = 16dc, etc. you add 3dc for each square.
i would say this is not for beginners unless they have a good imagination and counting is so very important. there is a finished picture of peacock right before chart.
the rest of the book has old patterns and charts for a curtain w/ birds, a filet doily with "put the kettle on and we'll all have tea". filet collars, pillow case edgings, letters chart, 2 pages in front of directions for all stitches, hankie edgings and a beautiful round filet centerpiece and doily of fruit and vines. i gave it a 4 only because of no directions for the peacock. enjoy and good luck on any project.

- Communication
- Coaching
- Business analysis
- Computer
- Project management
- Resource management
Customer Reviews:
Very Informative and Easy to Follow!.......2001-04-11
The things that I found to be the most helpful in this package was the fact that it was very thorough and there were multiple examples for each section along with a wide range of topics dealing with everyday situations in the business world. This package helped me in understanding some of the key aspects in training and development such as self-assessments and proper ways to construct agendas. It also outlined a development plan for improving supervisory ability. The thing that I appreciated was that it is possible to use this program with managers, supervisors, or can be done with employees and supervisors. This book is very complete and could be very beneficial to any supervisor, manager, consultant, or employee if the program is used properly and taken seriously.
A Good Read!.......2001-02-23
Definitely designed more like a textbook than a manifesto, this volume bills itself as the only supervisory training book you'll ever need to deal with today's issues and skills. Consultants Brad Humphrey and Jeff Stokes' punctuate their book with illustrative graphs, chapter wrap-up questions and lots of notes in highlighted bold type. Their tone of voice would fit well into many classrooms as well as corporate offices. This wide-ranging book covers the basics and offers very complicated productivity analysis, worker evaluation protocols and even an initial primer on how computer applications can help your productivity. For the manager or supervisor who's just testing the deep waters of management theory, we... recommend this fairly easy first step into the deep end. The authors suggest that an organization's supervisors should all read a chapter and then deal with the questions and exercises in a discussion group. That's the supervisory skill equivalent of "Okay, everybody in the pool!"
Expecting Much More!.......2000-08-29
The book is not very stimulating to read, and you will find yourself putting it down because of lack of interest. The author hits on many key points throughout the book, but rarely excites or intrigues the reader with the subject matter of supervision. Many bullets, charts and information; but not very engaging!
Excellent Book.......2000-07-06
The 21st Century Supervisor was inspirational. I know that sounds a bit over-the-top but I really liked what it had to say. It was more about developing supervisory skills which will help establish a synergistic work environment. It described the art and science of supervision as a worthwhile end in itself rather than a step up the corporate ladder.
Challenging, original, comprehenive and articulate........2000-02-04
The 21st Century Supervisor: Nine Essential Skills For Frontline Leaders is designed to show anyone charged with a managerial or supervisor responsibility how best to carry out their obligations regardless of the size or nature of their company, corporation, agency, or organization.
