Customer Reviews:
Great book for preschool and up.......2007-01-23
I really enjoy this book and have given it as a gift many times. Good for slightly older kids (not toddlers) as the fingerplays are a little on the hard side for very young children. We enjoy this book a great deal.
Finger Plays.......2006-07-27
This book brings back memories of many years ago. My mom would do these finger plays when I was a young child. I did them with my kids and now I am forwarding this book on to my son to do with his first child.
too wordy.......2006-02-23
I am a preschool teacher and the finger plays in this book are too long and wordy. The illustrations were not very easy to follow either.
Brings you and your child together.......2001-04-22
I bought this book when my daughter was an infant. She's over 4 now, and we still return to Emilie's fingerplays to have a fun rhyme and finger game. The book inculdes beautiful pen drawings of all of the finger positions (like how to make an umbrella or a caterpillar with your fingers), plus music for each rhyme--you can either speak them or sing them. The rhymes are very simple and easy to learn. A great tool for parents and children that will have you both laughing!

Book Description
How do babies learn to talk? They listen to people speak and copy the sounds they hear. Rhymes are excellent learning tools for babies and toddlers because they emphasize the sounds, rhythms, and magic of words.
All the rhymes in Hippety-Hop Hippety-Hay are specially selected and carefully targeted to encourage language development in children from birth to age three. There are gentle rocking, soothing, and bouncing rhymes for infants; finger and action rhymes that encourage enjoyment of language and its comic potential for ages one to two; and more sophisticated action rhymes for ages two to three. The author gives practical advice on how to say the rhymes, includes activities to accompany them and games to play, and even sets some of the rhymes to music. Illustrated in full color throughout, Hippety-Hop Hippety-Hay should be on the shelves of every new parent's library.

Simply Wonderful.......2000-05-16
Music for Very Little People is what every parent wants for their young children. Activities that are fun, easy, and teach without pain. Today's music for infants/toddlers is too cluttered which makes it hard for them to learn. Mr. Feierabend resists the trend towards glitz and gives you simple, enjoyable songs for you and your children. The cassette tape will help anyone learn the songs. My son loved these right from the start and still does. Really well done.

Great combination of story and music.......2000-07-25
My 18 month old daughter loves to read this book. It is nice because the music plays and you can sing along with the music. Plus there are pictures to follow with the story. I enjoy singing to her and she loves to listen. I want to buy others in this series.

My First Songs (Growing tree).......2005-09-19
The book is excellent. My 2 year son loves to pick a page and have me sing to him. He even joins in. It's great to have all the words and verses to his favorite songs.
Their choice.......2000-06-24
Let's face it--sometimes we don't know why a particular book is a kid's favorite. That's the case with this book. I would never have guessed it was to become the all-time-favorite book of both my children (1 and 3). They just love it!
You Know the Tunes - - Now Here's the Words!.......2000-06-07
This is quite a mom & dad's helper... you know the tunes but can't remember the verses to "Wheels On The Bus". This is a word book, it doesn't contain the music notes, but they really aren't needed. They are presented with one beautiful color illustration per song with easy-to-read text. Some words are a bit different than I recall (Is it eensy weensy spider or itsy bitsy spider?) but that may just be a regional thing. It is a good parent/child interactive book.
My Daughter's FAVORITE book!!!.......1998-08-06
"My First Songs" by Jane Manning is Haley's favorite book at the moment. It has to be read (sung) to her by Daddy every night. And she refuses to go to bed until she's heard it. This book is excellent for those parents (like me) who have forgotten all the songs they grew up with. The illustrations are bright and colorful and hold a 16 month old's attention night after night. We've recommended "My First Songs" to all of our friends with small children, and we recommend it to YOU too.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-05-09
I had this book for a PhD class in finance and have very few good words to say. The derivations should have been omitted: rarely is anything followed from the beginning to the end; the excerpts that are provided do not give much additional insight. Abundant typos in the formulas. In addition, the context of the models is often poorly presented and I was often left wondering what the situation or some assumptions are. Overall, relatively poorly written.
The book does give an overview of a lot of papers and as long as it is viewed as a starting point to read the papers it is acceptable. Still, the presentation is very fragmented and frustrating, creating a strong desire to read the original papers.
A Good Update to a Classic Text.......2007-04-09
It took a while before this 4th edition came out. The 2nd and 3rd editions were pretty good, and the 4th ed still contains a lot of the old material. Clearly, this says something about finance theory - but it updates a lot of the empirical results and includes some new/relevant topics. I would have to agree that this book is probably a little shallow for the Ph.D. level, but most Ph.D. corporate finance courses probably would use papers rather than texts. Hence, that's where your actual derivations and the actual author's thought comes from. On the other hand, this book takes a very good approach and the authors are very respected in the field. In terms of a more advanced MBA text, I think that this is the best book available.
It is definitely not a book for PhD level.......2006-08-01
The book suggests it serves as a first course in finance for PhD students, and a second course in finance for master students. But as I see it, it is too shallow for PhD level reading, as it never explain some complicated derivation clear enough. You don't know how some statements or conclusions come from. There is just not enough explanation. I mean, the author could have said that "after some derivations" or "it can be shown that...", but they just give some results without mentioning whether it can be derived with some convoluted math but because it is out of the depth of the book, only the result is given, or it just comes easily from the assumptions or conditons. I have to figure their logic since usually I just like to thought about how to derive a result as I am supposed to read it as a first book in finance for a PhD student. Many times I have to give up figuring, as the steps the authors take from the conditions to the results are usually too big to guess. So I ended up with treat this book as an ElEMENTARY level book, giving up any derivation and analyzing, just taking the results as granted.
According to my roommate who is a master in finance student and who happened to look at my book for curiosity, this book looks too deep for a master level in some topics, e.g., real options. They try to talk about some complicated financial theories, not deep and clean enough for a PhD student and also not that intuitive to understand for a master student.
In sum, I would say, don't waste money and time on this book. If you are a PhD student, read some books or papers treating certain topics with clear derivations and depth. If you are a master student, though my opinion is sort of partial, the book does not provide good intution for some advanced topics.
It's a masterpiece!.......2005-03-31
"Financial theory and corporate policy" is THE theory-of-finance book. It is so well-written, concise, and most importantly, it gives you the framework of conceptual knowledge and intuition to understand what the literature on financial theory is trying to do and how it all fits together. It is appropriate for a second course in finance or a first PhD level course. The building blocks needed to get the most out of this text is matrix algebra, elementary calculus (integrals and differentials), intermediate microeconomics, basic statistics (regression analysis), some optimization (min and max of functions), and basic financial skills such as discounting, the use of cash flows, pro forma income statements and balance sheets. The book has excellent appendices if you lack or need to brush up on these topics. Also, after each chapter state-of-the-art references are listed, very useful if you want to delve a little deeper. To summarize, I just love this book, and I think you will too.

The best book on the subject.......2007-10-01
I was a student of Dr. Mulford during my MBA, and I can say that the book is as great as his class. He definitvely was one of the best professors I ever had.
We are used to see in many valuation books to take Free Cash Flow as a given; therefore not understanding the real implication of FCF manipulation in enterprise value.
This book explains how the FCF can be calculated and what are the usual "tricks" that companies do in order to show better (or worse?) results. And that is what is all about: building financial criteria for managers in order to make the best decisions.
The best: meaty, well-written and thorough.......2007-08-23
This is not your typical accounting/finance book (i.e., unclear, unfocused and boring). Creative Cash Flow Reporting is the best and most important accounting/finance book I've read in many years. The authors are certainly focused on the right area (determining sustainable cash flow from operations). The interesting nuances of cash flow reporting are laid out in simple terms (e.g., debt funding and repayments are reported with Financing cash flows, but the related interest expense is reported with Operating cash flows). The authors also go beyond the numbers to provide good background re: a number of strategic alternatives (e.g., why one might enter into a sale/leaseback transaction). There are many other reasons to recommend the book.
In summary, this book is a "must have" for accountants and financial analysts, and I would strongly recommend for CEOs, COOs, corporate and securities attorneys, and corporate middle managers.
Nothing new in here.......2006-12-13
this book serves more as a dictionary of cash flow related items rather than offering any prescription for active monitoring of cash flow related mischief.
save your time and money.
Groundbreaking book.......2006-03-18
Mulford and Comiskey have delivered a tour de force for the financial and accounting community in this book. Whether you are a financial analyst, corporate accountant, auditor or an executive with a small or large firm, you absolutely will benefit from this book. It is one of the most important books of the last 20 years, and in my opinion, it is the finest book ever written on the concepts and methods of deciphering Operating Cash Flow, it's relationship to earnings, calibrating and measuring free cash flow, as well as the mechanics and drivers (and sometimes deliberate manipulation by unscrupulous management) within the business system that can lead to distortions in the Cash Flow statement.
What about earnings supported by artificial means? What are the core drivers of cash flows? What should our view be, vis a vis the Operating Cash flows, regarding non recurring charges and depreciation? Are capital expenditures really as cut and dry as we like to think they are, under GAAP? How does it impact our cash flows, in the real world? How is it sometimes manipulated, to distort the underlying cash flow realities?
If you are a financial or accounting professional, read this book. Read it twice. Read it three times. An absolutely extraordinary book. Well written, insightfull, never boring, always intriguing with unique content. The authors have such an extraordinary grasp of accounting and financial flows, and bring such groundbreaking concepts and ideas to the field, that you won't put this book down, and there are not many accounting or finance books we can say that about !! "Creative Cash Flow" by Mulford and Comiskey is absolutely a virtuoso performance. Amongst, and compared to, the entire literature that exists in the field of accounting and financial analysis, this book is an extraordinary achievement.
Simply the best book on the subject........2005-09-04
Messers Mulford and Comiskey have released a primer on what has lately become a messy subject. Unlike other books with a focus on cash--Hackel's book, for example--this one delves a little bit deeper into the subject of financial misreporting. The reader is given a synopsis of how companies say that their cash is operating, whereas it ought to be put under financing or investing cash flow. There is a multitude of similarly constructed arguments. The examples are lucid, apropos, and contemporary. The book also has a deterministic model for calculating CFFO. Read it.

Customer Reviews:
beautiful!.......2001-06-21
Since I have a MA in Econ, I was looking for a book that builds the bridge from economics to finance. copeland and weston have done an excellent job,and I am lucky to have struck gold after months of frustrations with "popular" texts like brealey myers. Copeland and Weston is meant for advanced undergrad and grad students. It presents the material in a serious, mathematical fashion, unlike Stephen Leroy's Financial Economics (another excellent text, but aimed for Phd students),so that there is a feeling of actually learning something at the end of the chapter. Most importantly it doesent trivialize issues like B/M do. I would definitely recommend the book to those interested in learning finance seriously.especially to those with a masters background.
Finance.......2000-08-03
Copeland and Weston did an extraordinary work writing Financial Theory and Corporate Policy. This book is an excellent academic material for either MBA or Ph.D students with a concentration in finance. However, we need an update edition because the last one (1988) does not incorporate the last empirical developments. I hope Copeland and Weston can produce a new update edition. Everybody that loves finance will be very grateful.
Detailed but flawed.......2000-06-27
I have read the book in detail, since this was the primary textbook we had for our class. It is quite astounding how so many things have been compiled into a single book -- not only in scope but also in terms of the number of researches put together. But it can be noted that the authors are clearly biased towards "modern finance" and defend clearly their own views. Another flaw is that there are ambiguities in some parts. You would not really know what they want to say. With respect to mathematics, the level demanded is alright. In fact, it could probably be made better with more math. Ideas could become clearer that way.
More intelligent & quantitative than Brealy/Meyrs.......2000-05-11
Treats the same subjects as the classis B/M MBA text, but for anyone who wants a little more than the "lowest common denominator" approach of B/M, far more satisfying and thoughtful. Don't need to be a math whiz but grounding in college calc and stats needed to make this book live up to this review.

Book Description
David Sciulli's work provides invaluable aid in understanding corporate governance in its largest frame. What the world now calls corporate governance involves more than issues of utilitarian effectiveness. At its most basic level, it presents issues of public policy and power grounded in philosophical conceptions of man and society. The deep issues that corporate structure and power raise come visibly to the surface only periodically in our history. Currently the world can witness the tensions that are inherent in corporate governance in the European Unions' struggle to redefine the role of capital markets and of other political institutions in the design of its emerging structure. In the U.S. these tensions were last exposed by the hostile takeover wave of the 1980s.
David Sciulli's sociology brings to an analysis of the larger issues that corporate governance presents the perspective of both the historian and the philosopher. His richly detailed account of the evolution of corporate law and governance is most useful in resetting--broadening--the frame within these issues are debated. This book makes a valuable contribution.
Hostile takeovers and leveraged buyouts in the 1980s and 1990s yielded CEOs considerable wealth. They also brought unprecedented hardship to middle managers and ordinary workers. Social theorist David Sciulli sees the period in broader perspective and shows how the private governance of corporations today carries an even more profound consequence--the weakening of basic institutions of democratic civil societies. He focuses in particular on when and how the courts mediate the institutional consequences of corporate governance in the United States. He connects for the first time the technically specialized literature of corporate law with the more theoretically informed literature of civil society. Along the way Sciulli presents a sharply drawn alternative to legal conservatives' rhetoric of corporate contract as well as to liberals' rhetoric of corporate social responsibility. By creating a model to predict and explain the behavior of U.S. courts and their counterparts in Europe and Japan, Sciulli's "societal constitutional" approach opens the door to empirical, cross-national studies of c! orporate power.

In the Face of Law and Economics.......2001-05-30
Finally, a positive accounting of corporate law "tradition" as aggressive as the criticisms by Easterbrook and Fischel, Romano and Roe. This is probably the best book on corporate law for interested outsiders, and it certainly puts corporate law in broader social context than "progressive" or stakeholder-centered approaches. By showing specifically when, where and how corporate law bears on society, the author pinpoints why law and economics is partial at best. More than even Eisenberg or Brudney, he demonstrates in clear, positive terms why certain court-enforced fiduciary duties remain important whereas others can safely be replaced with contracts or laissez-faire. And the book proceeds sans legalese. One heads up, however: though ideal for non-lawyers (and essential for academics), this book is hardly a casual, shore-side read. (The same goes for the author's earlier book on corporations. His chapter there on equity law is one of the best brief discussions I have seen of this important legal tradition).
An Accessible Approach.......2001-05-17
Sciulli uncovers basic legal principles in the ongoing effort to monitor corporate governance. In its sophistication, this book reminded me of Habermas' Between Fact and Norms and Bourdieu's Pascallian Meditations, but Sciulli's book is more accessible. It revolves around concrete cases that nonspecialists can follow. In fact, I wonder whether his approach to law and corporations begins to establish his social theory as a rival to Habermas and Bourdieu more generally. Plus, it's about time some social theorist engaged the law and economics crowd on their own turf.
