don't get this one-- get the green one it's your move--tough puzzles.......2007-02-05
the green one is brilliant-- i couldn't put it down. the positions in the blue version make no sense to me and ward doesn't explain much.
Innovative approach to chess problems............2007-01-27
I am a fan of Chris Ward and own a number of his books. He has a gift for simplifying complex ideas and distilling them down to their essence. In this book, he present 50 chess problems and commentary by 5 different fictional players with different playing styles. Each example illustrates an important aspect of play and different ways of thinking about it. That is what I think makes the book valuable and allows you to retain the information.
What I like best about this book is that it is fun to work with. Sometimes, I don't enjoy the highly technical chess books and feel they could have found a better way to present their concepts in a way that they can be integrated into memory. On the other hand, this book is NOT dense with material and it is rather expensive for what you get.
Could be better (blue revision - It's your move).......2006-09-08
I believe the best way to learn and to improve in chess, is to solve chess puzzles. You don't have to buy six chess book that describe what is a "bad" bishop. But you need to se numbers and numbers of examples and puzzles you can solve, involving a "bad" bishop. Chess puzzle in the categories:
1. Tactical - pattern (Learn to se a pin quickly) A book example is "Combination Challenge!"
2. Tactical - common (More difficult tactical puzzle). A book example is "The Ultimate Chess Puzzle Book"
3. Positional. A book example is this book, "It's your move", and "Can You Be a Positional Chess Genius?"
4. Endgame. A book example is "Endgame Challenge"
Chris Ward "It's your move" is a positional chess puzzle book. What is nice with this book is that the writer includes several possible solutions to a puzzle. The puzzles are also carefully chosen. What is a letdown in this book is that the writer seldom explains deeply why the other alternatives are wrong/less attractive. What differs between a tactical exercise and a positional exercise is that a tactical exercise very often has very few alternative solutions (often only one), but a positional exercise seldom has just one clear solution. Positional puzzle book as this book should explain why other alternatives are wrong/less attractive. The strange thing is that Chris Ward tells us in the Introduction that he will not give explanations why the other alternatives are wrong. And I think that is very strange, because Chris Ward has done a great job to find alternative solutions to a puzzle in this book.
That makes this book uncompleted, unfortunately.
This is also a very hard chess puzzle book (not for players below 1800). For instance the very famous bishop-endgame between Topalov - Shirov is a puzzle in this book. Not many players in the world would have found this move at the board. For a player (1300-1700), it is stupid to have this position as a puzzle, it's simply to hard. So this is a puzzle book for players 2000+.
Note that my review is based on the blue revision.
Very helpful chess book.......2005-09-24
This book is great for intermediate chess players. The problems range from openings, mid-game strategy, and end games. I found the problems challenging, and the fact you can choose from several different options with the wrong AND the right answer explained helped a lot (unlike the Silman books, which present one right answer without you knowing what was wrong with your own assessment). Be careful; this only refers to the red cover book (Improvers). The other editions are much different.
Excellent service.......2005-09-08
The book matched the description exactly, so I knew what I was getting.

Sound advice for managerial success anywhere, but especially in the hospitality industry.......2006-12-15
Leadership is one of those things that everyone recognizes when they see it but is difficult to define. Part of the problem is that it has so many forms. There is leadership on the battlefield, in the boardroom, in the factory, at academic institutions, in sports teams, in other words there is a leader in just about every activity involving more than one person. It is also a hard activity to carry out, because in nearly all cases the authority that the leader exercises is not based on any authoritarian right. Successful leadership is a partnership between the leader and the led, which means that the leader derives a great deal of their authority from the consent of the governed.
In this book, Rehkopf discusses the strategies good leaders employ from the perspective of the hospitality industry. He has managed hotels and resorts and opened golf and country clubs. His knowledge of the subject matter is thorough, yet his main themes are simple. If you are a manager, interact with your people, take an interest in their welfare and listen to their concerns. Leadership by controlling force is a managerial dead end, it works for a short time, as eventually people will leave. The first to leave will of course be your good people, as they are the ones with the most pride in their work and can more easily find another job.
The advice offered up in this book is sound, the American business world would be much more efficient if more managers were to follow it. Unfortunately, that is not the case. For a variety of reasons, so many managers choose to insulate themselves from their workers. While some professional distance is necessary in the work place, there are times when the human element must take precedence. By applying the basic courtesies of human interaction, good managers can motivate to an extent that no threat can ever achieve.
This book contains a simple blueprint for successfully managing a business in the hospitality industry. As such, all that aspire to or are currently managing in the business would be aided by reading and applying the advice.
When "SERVICE" is important to your operations.......2004-06-08
Here's the book I wish someone had shared with me years ago.
This is a practical, back to the basics, presentation of every day service opportunities. Ed shared a copy of this book with me and I in turn shared it with one of our General Managers. She was so excited about its content that she requested I send more copies for her managers. We now utilize the book in management training programs, and all of our Department Managers receive a copy.
This book develops a level of understanding among our teams' managers that service is important to everyone, and when customers receive great service consistently, great results will occur.
Thanks Ed for sharing your valuable experiences with us!
What All Service Industry Leaders Should Know.......2004-06-02
For an industry that often lacks leadership guidance and supervisory training, this book delivers the key ingredients needed on the journey to becoming a sound leader. Well-written and easy to read, this book is beneficial for both experienced and new leaders. Rehkopf uses composite examples from his own diverse career in the hospitality industry as the basis for the book. A must read for every management trainee and aspiring leader.
Direct and to the Point.......2004-05-26
Rehkopf hits a home run with this book. It is logically written, easily read, and full of pertinent examples. Although directed to the hospitality industry, the lessons are applicable to anyone in a leadership role. I've used it in my business and bought copies for all my mid-management people. This book is for owners, managers and all people who aspire to be an owner or manager one day.
A Practical Guide to Leadership............2004-05-26
A well written and concise book which presents a practical guide on leadership. This book was easy to read and offers many good examples of how to be an effective service based leader. An excellent training tool for all levels of management.

From the supplier: Companies which adopt an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) program save on huge legal expenses and boost employee morale. ADR may include mediation, arbitration, mini-trials, summary trials and peer review. Whichever ADR format is chosen, both sides of a dispute have better chances of being heard through the ADR program. Since mediators and arbitrators tend to be more objective in their judgment than jury members, companies can settle disputes at less cost and in a more rational manner.
