The Healthy House Answer Book: Answers to the 133 Most Commonly Asked Questions
John Bower , and Lynn Marie Bower Manufacturer: Healthy House Inst ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 096371564X |
Product Description
Among the various healthy housing books, The Healthy House Answer Book by John and Lynn Bower is something a little different. While the rest of the offerings in this field are thick, very comprehensive volumes, this is a smaller book in both size and depth--sort of a "pocket healthy housing guidebook." While covering the major concerns anyone would have about all aspects of construction and maintenance, all the information is presented in a very concise Q and A format. With subject chapters and a complete index, this is a great introductory book for anyone interested in the subject.Customer Reviews:
Highly Informative Introduction. Extremely well done!.......2003-10-12
In the Healthy House Answer Book, the authors -- healthy home experts, John and Lynn Bower -- tackle 133 commonly asked questions. Don't be fooled by this book's brevity, though. If you're new to the subject, this book should be a fantastic resource. I know, I read it early in my research on healthy homes for my books on natural homes and passive solar heating and cooling and felt that it brought me up to speed on the topic quite rapidly.
I especially liked the question-answer format and found it to be a delightful respite from the typical book style. The authors get right to the point. No wasted words!
Unless you're looking for an encyclopedic treatment of the subject, you should find this book to be a goldmine of valuable information. If you want a more encyclopedic treatment, the Bowers offer that option, too, in some of their other books.

The Great Crash 1929

Rampant speculation. Record trading volumes. Assets bought not because of their value but because the buyer believes he can sell them for more in a day or two, or an hour or two. Welcome to the late 1920s. There are obvious and absolute parallels to the great bull market of the late 1990s, writes Galbraith in a new introduction dated 1997. Of course, Galbraith notes, every financial bubble since 1929 has been compared to the Great Crash, which is why this book has never been out of print since it became a bestseller in 1955.Galbraith writes with great wit and erudition about the perilous actions of investors, and the curious inaction of the government. He notes that the problem wasn't a scarcity of securities to buy and sell; "the ingenuity and zeal with which companies were devised in which securities might be sold was as remarkable as anything." Those words become strikingly relevant in light of revenue-negative start-up companies coming into the market each week in the 1990s, along with fragmented pieces of established companies, like real estate and bottling plants. Of course, the 1920s were different from the 1990s. There was no safety net below citizens, no unemployment insurance or Social Security. And today we don't have the creepy investment trusts--in which shares of companies that held some stocks and bonds were sold for several times the assets' market value. But, boy, are the similarities spooky, particularly the prevailing trend at the time toward corporate mergers and industry consolidations--not to mention all the partially informed people who imagined themselves to be financial geniuses because the shares of stock they bought kept going up. --Lou Schuler
Book Description
Of Galbraith's classic examination of the 1929 financial collapse, the Atlantic Monthly said:"Economic writings are seldom notable for their entertainment value, but this book is. Galbraith's prose has grace and wit, and he distills a good deal of sardonic fun from the whopping errors of the nation's oracles and the wondrous antics of the financial community." Now, with the stock market riding historic highs, the celebrated economist returns with new insights on the legacy of our past and the consequences of blind optimism and power plays within the financial community.Customer Reviews:

Gold Diggers of 1929: Canada and the Great Stock Market Crash
George Fetherling Manufacturer: John Wiley & Sons ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0470834137 |
Book Description
"His recreation of 1929 makes the stock market crash come all too alive. It’s a dramatic reminder of how vulnerable we were and might be again."Peter Newman
Even 75 years later, the Crash of 1929 throws a shadow over the financial world whenever stock markets take a tumble. Yet much of what we believe we know about it is mistaken. Brokers didn’t jump out of windows—and Bay Street wasn’t in lock-step with Wall Street. The truth is that Canada’s crash and subsequent Depression were worse than the American ones, striking at a vulnerable time, when society was in transition between agricultural and industrial economics and between the British and American styles of power.
But though the period was different here than across the border, it was no less thickly populated with outrageous scoundrels, speculators, suckers, soothsayers—and victims. Many people burned by the collapse of prices in Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg or Vancouver were still alive to tell their stories when Gold Diggers of 1929 was first published a quarter century ago. The book records their voices as it looks at politics and institutions blown apart by events set in motion in that long-ago October.
In this classic account rich in anecdote and alive with the heady flavour of the times, George Fetherling looks back at the brokers and bankers, the shrewd millionaires and blue-collar wildcatters—all of them caught up in the rush to cash in. Who were the heroes? Who were the villains? Who went to jail, who went broke, who carried on business as usual?
