Book Description

Purdy fills you in on the details, explains the whys, and makes it easier for you to improve—to be a very good player without large amounts of memorization. Even the elementary principles which begin this book have points not seen in other works of this type. His language is a bit unusual, making it easier to remember such things as "biffing the Bishop." He covers all three phases of a game: the opening, the middlegame, and the endgame. Lastly, a complete game is dissected for the purpose of showing how Purdy's Rules are used effectively. The best beginner's book on chess you will ever read.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good book for the beginner who knows the rules........2003-12-06

I like this book. It's great for beginners wondering why they can't get through the opening without getting crushed. Purdy's Guide provides dozens of rules of thumb. Follow these, and you'll usually get at least beyond the opening.

He also has some middlegame and endgame tips, in addition to lots of small examples. Purdy's prose is fluid and disarming, neither condescending nor placating,

The downside to these rules of thumb? Purdy does not explain in much depth why violating these rules can hurt your game. But for a beginner, does the reason matter? You'll enjoy the game more if you follow the principles.

I suggest reading this book before going on to Seirawan's wonderful and personally genuine Winning Chess series. Seirawan concentrates on piece mobility and tactics more than on general principles.

There are more reviews under an older edition, sub-titled "First Steps to Fine Points".

2 out of 5 stars decent beginner's book - cookbook style.......2003-10-04

this books delivers many rules and rules of thumb. These are helpful mostly for beginners - contrary to the authors preface statement. The book covers opening , middlegame and endgame so we have a one-book-solution for a player who wants to do somthing for his play.

However, the 12th edition might have been reworked as to eliminate some errata, mainly in the discussion of openings (p.53: D12 gets a ?, undeserved ! asf.)

there was a good review in the magazine: "Europa Rochade #10 2003 p.91"

5 out of 5 stars Good chess technique by principles........2004-04-27

I learned to play chess from this book decades ago and have kept up a comfortable skill level just by following Purdy's precepts. Purdy was an Australian, and was a World Correspondence Chess Champion.

5 out of 5 stars Great beginnng to intermediate book.......2002-07-11

This book is really good for someone wishing to take their chess to the next level after they've learned some basic strategies and tactics. It can be read fairly quickly and will give you some general strategies that you can apply in many chess games. If you need a good introductory chess book, then this is the one to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Should be every player's first chess book.......2001-12-09

There are many "all in one books" that are designed to be a person's first chess book, or only chess book. The Complete Idiot's Guide does a good job, but Purdy's "Guide to Good Chess" is by far the best out there. He is an excellent writer, that can take complex chess concepts, and make them understandable.

All essentials skills are covered, and he does a great job in pointing you in the right direction to further your skills if you are looking to get serious about chess.

For a casual player who is looking to improve their game, or for someone who thinks they might want to study chess, this is clearly the book you should pick up.

PS I am very stingy with the 5 stars, but this book truely deserves them.

5 out of 5 stars Can I give it more than 5 stars?.......2000-07-17

Purdy is unmatched as a chess writer and teacher...

get anything with his name on it! This is a foundational book that every player should own!

5 out of 5 stars Know how to play, but not really ready for Nimzovich?.......1999-04-27

Purdy does an excellent job of laying the foundation for more advanced concepts. If you know how to play, but are perplexed by concepts that you're always reading, you'll find a lot of it answered here. If you read through this and the Seirawan Microsoft Press books, your chess will take a nice leap forward.

          5 out of 5 stars Starting a Nonprofit.......2007-04-10

I am in the process of forming a nonprofit organization to benefit people with brain injury. An attorney friend suggested that I purchase this book which gives guidelines for setting up a nonprofit organization in California. Being a novice in the field of start up companies I have found this book to be without exception easy to understand and follow and gives you samples of forms and detailed explanations on how to file them with your local, state, and federal government. I would recommend this book to anyone who is in the process of beginning a nonprofit even if you have previous experience. It gave me the assurance that forms would be filed properly and the advise on writing the bylaws to the company.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-02-20

This book has saved my theatre troupe hundreds of dollars. Easy to use and extremely helpful, it explains all of the legalease and other intricacies that go into filing for a 501c(3). A good for instance -

A friend recently filed for a 501c(3) for the same purpose as me (educational). Her filing fees and legal costs have totaled over $800.00. Mine, including the purchase of this book, are estimated at $300.00! That's a huge savings, especially for a small group like mine...

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource for starting a non-profit in CA.......2006-07-22

This was an excellent book, very well written for the layperson. The online links to further instruction and the CDROM were fabulous tools. I highly recommend this to an start-up non-profit.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Step by Step Guide to Forming Your Non-Profit.......2006-04-03

This book is an excellent step by step guide for starting your non-profit corporation in California. The author does a lot of hand holding, which is especially helpful when it comes to filing your 1023 with the IRS which establishes your tax exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization.

So here is what you will get out of the book:

          1)Should you form a non-profit or a regular business?
He discusses the advantages and disadvanges of a non-profit.

2)501(c)(3)- What is it, do you qualify?
He goes in to detail on if your organization's purpose and activities qualifies you as a 501(c)(3) non-profit with all of its tax advantages. This is a key and important consideration. He also goes into the detail about the structure of your organization- the directors, officers, and how officer's/director's salaries and family affliations might affect non-profit status. He gives plenty of examples, which I found very helpful.

(3)Step by Step filing of articles of incorporation with the State of California.
He gives sample articles of incorporation for "public benefit corporations", which a general category as well as religious corporations. He give plenty of information on how to modify these articles to your individual needs.

(4)Step by Step creation of Bylaws. Again, discussion of each point in the bylaws with suggestions for modification to suit your needs.

(5)Filing for tax exempt status with the State of California and the IRS. This is potentially the most daunting part of the process, but I found that he takes you through it slowly, step by step, to make it as painless as possible although I am sure it is still a somewhat painful process.

(6)Finally he takes you through how to keep corporate records, and conducting your first board of directors meetings.

All of the forms, sample bylaws, articles of incorporation, IRS instructions, etc. are found on the CD rom that comes with the book.

          What the book doesn't provide:

--Some practical and common questions did remain unanswered. For example, Lets say you pour seed money into a non-profit corporation, from your own pocket, to pay for travel, meetings, conferences and other promotional activity. Is this tax deductable to you?

--Doesn't offer very much guidance of where there are free university and other resources for new non-profits. This would have been very helpful.

Perhaps both of these like that are beyond the scope of the book.

If you are looking for a book that will give you an very good understanding the structure of a non-profit corporation and a practical step by step guide of how to form one and fill out the proper paperwork, I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars So far so good.......2005-10-09

This book has gotten us through filing papers with the Secretary of State. I haven't gotten into writing bylaws and filing tax forms yet--which should be much more challenging--but from skimming over those sections, I think I should be able to manage. I expect this book will have saved us hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in lawyer and accountant fees by the time our nonprofit is up and running.

I've long been a fan of the Nolo Press legal guides, but when I came across this in a local library, I took it home for a read and was very impressed. In a very readable manner, it explains the various choices; it also has forms and state-by-state information. I'm involved with two groups considering nonprofit status and it brought out many good points we hadn't thought of.

5 out of 5 stars A Practicle and Simple Resource.......2000-04-07

As a fan of self-help legal survival guides, I found this book very helpful. It's simple to read, only about 70 pages defining various types of nonprofit organizations, procedures for getting started and applying for tax-exempt status, and a bit on raising money and running a corporation. The appendices are actually the most helpful, listing websites, books, information on each state's requirements, and a section of forms including templates for annual meeting minutes. Overall, a good book on the basics of starting a nonprofit organization.

5 out of 5 stars Best nonprofit guide for Oregon nonprofits.......2006-06-16

I used this book extensively in forming and operating a small nonprofit corporation. It provides great information and does so in a clear manner. The book also provides all forms needed and contact information for both federal and state agencies involved in nonprofit oversight.
