Food for Thought.......2007-01-17
This book is a collection of essays by notables in the gaming field, and their thoughts about the purpose of the Gamemaster, and ideas on how to make the roleplaying experience better for all. While it does have some "try this" tips, it really isn't a "how to do gamemastering" book, in the sense of checklists and steps.
A book full of ideas.......2007-01-05
This book is a good resource for Dungeon Masters to gain a different voice in ideas in creating stories for your players. It is a good addition to a DM's library

Customer Reviews:
Talk about "Not getting the joke", Sheesh!.......2007-08-20
Iy's not a game. It's a (Foul mouthed) jab in th eye of role playing geeks.
It's aimed at I can't get laid D&D nerd, those depressing wanna be goth-vampire dorks, and every other RPG geek and their hobby.
I am amazed that some actually play it....
Human Occupied Landfill - the anti-RPG.......2006-05-24
Let's review what most RPGs have that HoL doesn't bother with:
Typed word: HoL is entirely hand written. Badly. There are places where the writing smashes into a tiny scribble, and others where it's gigantic and takes up 1/8th the page. There are places where the author scribbles out his mistakes, and others where he actively makes fun of his spelling errors.
Writing style: HoL completely dismisses the more passive writing style most RPGs have, talking straight to the reader. Oh, and it uses profanity frequently. And by frequently, I mean every 3rd word or so.
Page Numbers: Seriously, I still have no idea how many pages HoL is. I never bothered to count.
Table of Contents/Index: Without page numbers, these two items are meaningless. I'm actually glad they didn't bother putting either in.
Art: the art is done by a talented artist, who is obviously pretending to be bad at art. That's right, the style of the good artist is "bad art".
Layout: Or should I say Layout? The book has no real layout, often writing over artwork, inverting, or simply going for a 90 degree turn at certain points for no particular reason.
"What is Roleplaying?" section: almost every game has one of these. HoL recommends going and playing one of those games first, which is a good idea, as much of it's humor/parody is inspired by other RPGs.
Character Generation: Yes, without a supplement, you can't generate a character in HoL. There are several templates (12ish), but no word on character generation. And the point totals don't add up, so character generation isn't obvious.
This all being said, it utilizes a few of the genre elements found typically in D&D and other "traditional" RPGs (here's the ones I remember):
No PC Sex: HoL has no women, so all sex undertook on the planet is of the male-homosexual variety. It is taken as a given that most roleplayers are male and heterosexual, so there will be little in the way of PC sex.
Homicidal Maniacs: Almost everything on the planet is insane and has the necessary arsenal available to level a small country. Therefore, the PCs are required to be homicidal maniacs as well just to survive.
But anyway, with this critique, I'm sure you're expecting me to dismiss HoL as a horrible, horrible game. Well, that's not what it's trying to be. Heck, reading the "introduction" you know that. It's a parody of roleplaying games, and a parody of the angst you see in many homebrew RPGs who want to "buck the system".
It strives to get a 1 star review by someone who roleplays and compares it to other roleplaying games. It does it's job admirably, so I'm happy to oblige.
And I couldn't recommend another game to buy in it's stead. It should be required reading for all roleplayers (well, all roleplayers age 13 and up, who've played their share of D&D and etc).
My kids love it!.......2003-03-04
With all of the complex, rules heavy games on the market, it was a pure joy to be able to teach my two kids, ages 9 and 11, to play HoL! The rules are insanely simple, make for fast, exciting play, and allow you to totally immerse yourself in playing. I recommend this game for any parent wishing to teach their kids to roleplay, and as an educational tool as well! No better fun to be found anywhere! Both books are fantastic, with great writing.. you will be laughing for hours!
HoL, so good the entire family can play!
Innovative, wild and satirical........2002-10-22
The thing about HoL is, you either love it or you hate it. It's an RPG conceived as a rebellion against other RPGs. Everything in the book is hand drawn/hand written in black and white, and the result is astoundingly cool (and incredibly quirky). The authors love to go off on hilariously manic rants about all sorts of odd subjects. Of course, they also satirize anything they can--the futuristic civilization is controlled by a church, which is a thinly veiled parody of Christian churches hybridized with fast-food corporations. There's also references to graphic violence, bestiality and (since there are no women on HoL) homosexuality. So, as said above, definitely NOT for everyone, but still very well done.
Therapy for the jaded gamer.......2001-10-02
Hol, the game you need after years of TSR and Games workshop abuse. You really do need Hol, you just don't know it yet. Find a copy and just read it. If it does make you smile, then you are probably dead.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book but curiously doesn't mention Drew Barrymore.......2007-05-16
A really excellent book with anecdotes and many photographs of the three Barrymore siblings: John, Lionel and Ethel and the next generation of Barrymores, notably Diana and John Barrymore, Jr. Features interviews with Dolores Costello, her daughter Dolores Ethel (Dede) and some of the grandchildren. A memorable anecdote is from Dede who recalls the day her parents split up. I agree with other reviewer that not enough space is given to Michael Strange (Blanche Oelrichs) who had a tremendous influence on John during the twenties.
Curiously though, only John Jr's eldest children John Blyth and Blythe are mentioned. There were two others including Drew (born in 1975). Only John Jr's first two marriages and offspring from them are mentioned.
For fans of the Barrymore clan, this is a highly recommended book.
Delightful biography with 250 photos.......2006-04-05
If you want the most insightful and detailed account of the lives of Lionel, Ethel and John Barrymore read Margot Peters'HOUSE OF BARRYMORE. But if you look for the Barrymore biography that has the most photos without being a coffee-table book than Kotsilibas-Davis splendid volume will overfulfill your expectations. This sequel to THE ODYSSY OF MAURICE BARRYMORE tells the story of America's foremost family of actors between 1912 and 1978. The narration is facile, the gossip delightful and the photos so cleverly chosen that they bring to light the most carefully hidden secrets.
Many stills document Lionel's work as film pioneer with Griffith, Pickford, Garbo. How shocked he was when he saw himself on screen! ("Am I that fat?"). In THE CLAW his first wife played his daughter and his second wife (his brother's paramour who treated Lionel with sadistic cruelty and threw his money down the drain) played the woman who undoes him. Did you know that Gloria Swanson hired some muscle men who forced Lionel - to take a bath! Ethel was of course the first lady of the stage. The stills that show her in her silent films are all the more interesting. Both Lionel (WE BARRYMORES) and Ethel (MEMORIES) had the opportunity to write their own autobiographies.
Since Diana, John Barrymore's daughter from his second marriage (with society poetess Michael Strange) died young, his biographers usually contact the descendants from his third marriage (with Dolores Costello) for information and Photos. Kotsilibas-Davie visited Dolores Costello shortly before her death and this interview is the core of his book. Her photo-album captures one of Hollywood's tragic love-stories: Their famous kiss in THE SEA BEAST 1926 - he remained glued to her lips until she fainted (This version of MOBY DICK was a hit with audiences who liked his agony when sailors cauterize the bloody stump of his torn leg). The making of DON JUAN that was such an ordeal for John's cast-off sweetheart Mary Astor (his love interest in BEAU BRUMMEL) that she enlightened Dolores with full particulars after spotting John's engagement-ring on her finger. His attempts to overcome the booze. His jealousy when Dolores even looked at another man. The residence at the top of Tower Road that swallowed up his earnings (it is rumored that Charlie Chaplin aimed his high-powered telescope at the Barrymore's bedroom window). Their honeymoon cruise to the Galapagos Archipelago. The trophy room. The aviary with a black buzzard trained to kiss his master (John was caught rifling garbage cans on Sunset Srip). Triumphs. Wrong Decisions. Bad press.
He became harder to dress and photography, his box-office appeal diminished and his heavy drinking slowed down production. His memory lapse during the shooting of COUNSELLOR AT LAW 1933 sealed his reputation as liability. In her interview Dolores remembered how he attacked the nurses who refused to bring him alcohol and their last cruise where he downed her perfume, mouthwash and spirits of camphor. Two photos that show him with his children during the cruise are especially moving: as if he sensed that he would lose them. (There is also a poignant study of John and Diana taken during his last days). When he returned from India in 1935 reporters shot a series of revealing photographs and a "blown in the bottle" interview made the American public realize that John Barrymore was an alcoholic. Dolores divorced him because she could no longer take the gossip.
Kotsilibas-Davis' account of John Barrymore's life has two serious flaws: He accepts Dolores' version without verification: "She took just some furniture" (She was surrounded by her booty during the interview!) and he gives her too much space. There are just one or two photos of Barrymore's wives nr. two and four, which is absurd, since the years with Michael Strange were the most important of his career. Even his best films capture just a pale reflexion of the idol he was for the audience who saw him as RICHARD III and HAMLET. He was the greatest actor of his time and Strange, who left her husband, Rolls Royce and Park Avenue apartment for him was conducive to his career. And back-breaking...(She overtaxed him so much during the run of RICHARD III that he broke down and spent two months in a sanitarium). But he considered her as genius and had even the cheek to appear in her musical-verse-drama CLAIR DE LUNE 1921 which she wrote during her pregnancy. (The critical response made him boil with indignation). They traded threats of suicide (he was adept at feigning death) and when she broke his bottles he drank her cologne. Her autobiography (WHO TELLS ME TRUE) is frank, but she does not publicize her lesbian affairs...John's fourth marriage provided much fodder for the yellow press. Elaine craved for recognition - to the debit of his health. (Her memoir ALL MY SINS REMEMBERED is self-serving but oddly touching).

Book Description
This textbook-like tutorial is a self-contained introduction to interactive proof, specification, and verification in higher-order logic, using the proof assistant Isabelle 2002. In contrast to existing Isabelle documentation, this book provides a direct route into higher-order logic by bypassing first-order logic and minimizing discussion of meta-theory.
Isabelle is a generic system for implementing logical formalisms, and Isabelle/HOL is the specialization of Isabelle for higher-order logic; this theorem prover is well suited as a specification and verification system.
Customer Reviews:
Isabelle is wonderful.......2007-09-24
Isabelle is fantastic, and this is an excellent tutorial.
With Isabelle, all the mystery of math and proof goes away
and everything becomes concrete... just like programming.
The only improvement that I'd like to see is that the
tutorial be rewritten using the Isar proof language.

Book Description
Once upon a time it was dark at night and the animals couldn't see a thing. They ask the sun for help and he presents them with a wonderful surprise, a beautiful crescent moon that grows larger and rounder night by night. At first the animals are grateful, but soon they start taking the sun's gift for granted. Hurt and angry, the sun takes the moon away, then reconsiders, and comes up with a way to light the night for the animals that will always remind them to appreciate his generosity.?Coby Hol has created a sweet, simple picture book that introduces very young children to the waxing and waning of the moon and offers a gentle reminder to all to value Nature's gifts.
Book Description
Cutting-edge financial advisers go far beyond giving comprehensive client service. They are the profession's theorists and practical pioneers, developing new practice models that attract the kind of clients they want most and that help their business to grow. "In Search of the Perfect Modelprofiles some of the most creative minds in the planning field and explains how they turned their practices into distinctive businesses--offering instructive lessons to their peers. Beginning with an overview of how the profession has evolved in recent years, Mary Rowland analyzes how planners define and structure their enterprises--from big firms to sole proprietors, from national to regional operations, from generalists to niche players, and from those collecting annual retainers or hourly fees to those who charge by assets under management. Rowland concludes with a special focus on important issues related to managing a practice. Financial advisers are perpetually in search of the perfect business model. This fascinating overview will awaken planners to the many unique practice structures available and will help them find one that matches their strengths, personalities, planning philosophies, and lifestyles.
Customer Reviews:
Mary Rowland Turns Out Another Winner.......2007-08-10
I have to admit that when I first saw this book, I almost dismissed it, wondering if it was simply a rehash of her previous book on best practices for financial planners. I am very glad I gave it a second look, because this book, like her previous one, is a treasure trove of insights for financial planners who are searching for a business strategy that works for them. While the previous book was organized around a series of key topics such as full disclosure, professional qualifications and the like, this one is broken down into easily digestible descriptions of some of the leading financial planning firms, woven together with numerous quotes from the key principals at those firms. Rowland profiles a wide range of practices, everything from successful solo practitioner Judy Shine to what many consider the premier financial planning firm in the country: Evensky, Brown, Katz and [I think there's another name in there, too]. I found the book incredibly helpful, not only for its subject matter but also because of Rowland's insightful commentary. The description of each firm runs only a few pages, so it's easy to pick up the book and read a chapter when you don't have much time. I loved it.
Over-rated .........2007-07-14
The author is a journalist and is just writing bits and pieces about financial advisors she has encountered in her career. Half way through the book I decided to stop reading as I was just started to skim to see if I have missed anything... If you are a top Advisor (read .. hundreds of millions in assets or more..) and wondering what the market niche of other top Advisors is, this may be good. If you are starting out look elsewhere .. The text lacks flow to make the book an enjoyable read. Add to this the superficial content and there you go ..
Perfect Planning Landscape Description.......2006-05-19
As someone who has begun my education to become a financial planner but has not yet transitioned careers, this book has been essential in painting a picture of the financial planning landscape. Reading about the most successful firms using such a wide variety of models helps to place your ideas on the map and give a vision for the future.
Rowland's tie in to the ongoing debate about the future of the industry gives depth to a book that primarily gives snapshots of different businesses. Winners from across the spectrum weigh in, and not always with the same answer. For sure, you will come away from this book with an appreciation for the substantive changes that have taken place with every five year period over the last generation and an understanding that change will continue.
The chapter on niche businesses was excellent. She profiles six of them to give you an appreciation for the different dimensions by which a niche can be defined. At the other end, she highlights only one sole practioner which was disappointing since that is perhaps the most numerous type of planner. Most chapters profile 2-3 businesses which is enough. To stay objectively supportive of all the models, Rowland publishes very few figures on the absolute or marginal profitability of the firms. This is probably best as it keeps vision and corporate identity at the forefront. In a profession where the winners are invariably pursuing a passion as much as a paycheck, this tactic was a wise choice.
Inspirational and Enlightening.......2005-10-14
This is a "must read" for any planner who wants to start or improve their practice. You will walk away from this book feeling like you have wide-open lattitude to set up and run your business in perfect harmony with your own personality and belief system. You will be amazed at how successful the sample practices are by doing things in unique and surprising ways. The most practical and motivating work I've ever read on this subject!
Excellent Profiles of Various Business Models for Planners.......2004-05-18
Ms. Rowland has covered the financial planning beat for quite a while, and has benefited from watching carefully how the leading firms have developed. Anyone who thinks they need a different business model for their firm, or is about to start a new financial planning firm will benefit from reading and thinking about this book.
What kind of financial planning practice do you want? What kind of life style do you want? What kind of clients do you want to serve? What aspects of service do you want to do yourself, which parts have a staff to do and which parts do you want to outsource? How do you want to be compensated for your work? These are all pertinent subjects that are thoroughly explored in this book through detailed profiles of more than three dozen planners who span the gamut from single practitioners charging by the hour to occasional clients to larger firms that do everything for a single family throughout its many generations.
The book also looks closely at fees, expenses, and income attached to these different structures. No two planners do it the same way, and it looks like you have more choices than you think.
I found it refreshing to find that there's field where top performers can survive and prosper without working in large organizations. I was also impressed by the lifestyle advantages of offering limited, by-the-hour services.
I agree with Ms. Rowland's conclusion that life planning is not so new, and that large firms will not swoop up the whole industry. It wasn't clear where the efficiencies are that would make that possible . . . unless it would be to offer bare-bones planning for those with few assets by using software. But that's not the type of planning that most people in the industry want to do.
The book would have been improved if it had offered more analysis and a process for someone trying to pick a business model. Otherwise, the profiles were quite revealing and interesting. Although I operate as a management consultant, I find myself drawn into financial planning related issues (and yes, even life planning) when I work with entrepreneurs. So I felt it was valuable for me to learn from this book as well.
